The Acolyte (2024)
Not as bad as ppl say
Star Wars is:
- For children - the atmosphere is relaxed, joyful, and arguably simplistic.
- An infantilized version of Dune.
- Heavily dependent on budget due to the extensive use of expensive CGI. A Star Wars movie is far more costly than a regular movie filmed in a standard studio.
You can't make serious Star Wars movies with a Blade Runner atmosphere (I know they've tried) because it's too far removed from what people are used to.
If you want a serious SciFi - ask for a Dune series.
So this is what you get: childish movies that are very expensive due to elaborate costumes and futuristic sets.
Please be aware of the constraints here.
Blue Eye Samurai (2023)
Heavily inspired by japanese movies
This looks to me like it is inspired by the movies of. Akira Kurosawa himself.
The politics, the slow development, the backgroud which is always moving, the rain and the snow... I dont think it is intended to be a copy but it tryies to be japanese and I think it succeedes. I get this japanese vibe - be it from Kurosawa movies or from the story.
Is star wars movie bad because it is inspired by japanese movies? No. The same with this - I dont even think many people iwll notice.
I have a slight issue with a thin character who had little time to train - who beats opponents twice as strong and who trained thier whole life. But is still entertainig. It is not very serious - it is a bit childish but for adults.
Overall - very entertaining if you are not obsessed over everything being correct in movies :)
Les trois mousquetaires: D'Artagnan (2023)
So and so
The good
The movie is not as bad as most fr movies.
The atmosphere and the story are quite interesting.
The fighting is surprisingly good.
The bad
The actors are literally dirty - all the time - the characters look like beggars and there is no need for this. This is not a historic movie, is for entertainment only. This made me really dislike the movie.
The pacing is steady but there is no culminant point, nothing thrilling, no burst of anything. I've seen documentaries more thrilling than this.
Conclusion.
It is a very mixed bag. It is not bad but this could have been something like "The Last of the Mohicans" easily with better directing. It is missing the drama and the passion.
The book deserves justice and this is not the one. But if you are in the right mood, yeah it could work.
The Card Counter (2021)
If you get it, the movie has too much action!
I keep a few movies which I like to rewatch from time to time and this one is one of them.
Most (negative) reviews say that the movie has too little action, well to me it looks like it has too much action.
The movie is about a guy who is not trying to achieve grandious things but just tries to have a simple life. I liked this part the most - the calm, the hotels.. he moves frequently. Every day, every hotel he is on the road - it is an adventure, but because he is not trying to overachieve, he is in full controll of the adventure.
For me, the action of the movie, was a disruption of this calm and beautiful slow adventure and rithm.
So, is not a movie for everyone, if you are after a casino royale type of a move, this is totally not for you.
