Ripley (2024)
Outstanding performance by Andrew Scott
I was not convinced about the black and white choice as the viewer would have loved to see the amazing natural colours of the Amalfi coast, Venice etc. But actually I admired the decision as it made engaging the audience even more challenging. This series was well made, great casting and it does not feel like a remake of an existing great film. Andrew Scott was absolutely outstanding and his Italian was also all things considered. Pleasure to see Margherita Buy in the cast, I felt she added something to it. I felt all the details caught in the Italian towns/cities were extremely accurate and also the personalities of the minor Italian characters. The story may seem slow at times but all the details are needed to create suspense. Amazing work.
Baby Reindeer (2024)
Stalking is not the main theme of this. It's the director's biography
I think it was not right that people are led to believe this is a stalking story. Yes there is stalking but I felt it was not the main theme and there was no message that could be helpful for those who are going through this problem. It was more about Richard's life and I am not sure if all this was a cynical move from him to get fame - after all he would do anything for that as he said himself. I found this story quite weak and I didn't emphatise with his character at all. I felt some scenes were also too violent when there was no need for it.
The only likeable character was Teri and but again part of her storyline there was weak because surely she could have sued Martha for the aggression.
Overall, I liked the first two episodes and that's it.
The Bear (2022)
Very real, great acting and cast
This is a brilliant show, it's very real, acting is outstanding (especially in the Christmas episode). Carm and his family are complex characters, amazingly written. The whole Beef's staff is fantastic and every single character is admirable for all different reasons - I personally love Syd and in the end Richie. I really hope they release season 3 soon because I just can't wait to see how things will evolve.
Only bad note is the character Claire who does not serve any purpose in the show and I felt that her storyline was a complete waste of time. If she wasn't there, the show would have been the same and it would have evolved exactly how it did.
The Whale (2022)
Alright
I had very high expectations for this film but it was only alright to be honest. I was quite surprised when they gave Brendan Fraser the Oscar because he was never really outstanding - good but nothing shocking. In The Whale I thought he was good but again, not outstanding. The writing completely drove his performance because of how dramatic the role was but if I had to look at acting skills, I thought Colin Farrell deserved the oscar this year for how he played in the Banshees. Despite what I read on various social media, I thought Sadie Sink was very good instead and was an excellent casting choice. The plot was also only alright - in some parts not very relevant (like the whole storyline of the guy from the church) and some other parts seemed copied from films already seen. Pity.
The Banshees of Inisherin (2022)
Deserves a higher score
Outstanding performance from the three lads, and the director. I am not a big Colin Farrell's fan but he was absolutely amazing. Brendan Gleeson is always a guarantee and Barry Keoghan gave a strong and very nuanced performance. Really great acting. Flawless setting without any major effects, over production etc. "Just" the beautiful Irish landscape and the simple houses and pub. Loved it.
Great direction and story. It's not a light hearted story - can be heavy because of the themes but this was a very needed film, especially after rubbish like Avatar. This film will probably be a staged production in theatres, no doubt.
Di4ri (2022)
Bad acting
Really really bad acting, (the adults were even worse than the kids), shallow and unrealistic plots and dialogues. Cringe. The show is trying to be like "compagni di scuola" but it's nowhere near it!!
Stranger Things (2016)
Season 1 still the best, followed by Season 4
At the beginning of season 4 I thought it was a big drawn out and boring but it turned then into the second best season of stranger things in my opinion. It was incredible, really smart writing (re Vecna) and great music (as always). It doesn't quite reach the level of season 1 only because El doesn't feature as much and because of Hopper's storyline that didn't really need to be there. Felt sorry for Eddie and didn't think they gave him justice in the final battle but great character. Loved also Johnathan's friend with the pizza van. Max was outstanding. Overall, they did another great job with this season.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022)
All right
Dr Strange is absolutely my favourite avenger but this film was not what I was expecting. The story line is weak and quite disappointing. I am giving it still a 6 because of some good scenes but overall it was only all right.
Never Have I Ever (2020)
I keep re-watching it
I just keep watching it, it's really good. Love Devi, her story and her family. Season 2 is even better than season 1 (which was brilliant). Love Paxton and his sister. The only character I find really useless (or annoying at best) is Trent - please remove him from the show.
Is It Cake? (2022)
Change the host!
This show is quite original and enjoyable, with talented bakers. But the host is absolutely unbearable. Seriously, I have never seen a host as annoying as he is. I sense that even the bakers fee forced to laugh because they were told to...but why just not change host??
The Batman (2022)
Best DC film and best Batman
Pattinson was absolutely outstanding. His version of the Batman will always remain unique. Very good story and amazing writing. A lot happens. My favourite DC film. Unbeatable.
Young Sheldon (2017)
Very good overall but too much Dr Sturgis
I enjoyed this tv show immensely and it was nice to have a newer and well made TV show that references back to Big Bang Theory (especially after having watched Big Bang Theory way too many times because it was just too good compared to everything else). I think the actor who plays Young Sheldon is absolutely brilliant and loved Meemaw to bits. However, WAY too much space to Dr Sturgis, who at the end of the day is not even a featuring character in Big Bang - sure if he was that important, he would have featured at least in one episode! I understand that maybe they were glad to have him in the cast but the character is simply too much, not even remotely believable and incredibly annoying. Thought they had him written off at some point to try then having him back after only a few episodes of break. No.
Mary Poppins (1964)
A Classic
I really don't understand who could possibly give this film bad ratings. It's a classic and it's the best film Disney ever made. Fantastic cast, great writing, catchy songs, meaningful scenes.
