Pig (I) (2021)
5/10
Hermit Nic Cage and his Piggy Buddy
20 July 2021
Pig echoes the same themes as John Wick but with less of the vigor or emotional excitement. Nicholas Cage performs well as unorthodox characters, this time around as a slightly crazy but secretly cunning recluse, and it was fine concept to see his backstory unravel. Overall, it was pretty boring and unengaging but had a moment here or there which kept it from being a strictly poor experience.

A Cold Heart of Stone
18 July 2021
Be wary, viewer! You've heard this movie sucked, yes? You're expecting it to be so dopey and goofy but a little endearing. This film is not that. It resembles a slave auction, where the evil master WB puts all their slaves (IPs) up for a humiliating display? It is a brutal, demeaning, animal process, which is what this movie ends up being, too. If you've ever liked a fictional character, seeing them in this movie makes you like them less. Insulting on so many levels of the filmmaking process. Corporative slave auction. It freezes to the touch.

Disney Fails the Muppets Again
7 August 2020
Disney has done JACK with the Muppets in 20 years so I'm inclined to give them props for finally doing something with them. The formula of the show has the potential to properly present pure Muppet mayhem as it was in the 70s. That's my only compliment for this abysmal episode. It is without substance, painfully unfunny, and drags on to nauseam. That shouldn't be possible with the Muppets, yet this is the result Disney gives us once again. There is one part I laughed at. One part, so subtle it could've been missed if you turned your head for a second. The Muppets aren't subtle. They're BOMBASTIC. They're CHAOTIC. They're ANYTHING BUT THIS. I'm hardly motivated to watch the next episode, but I really hope the season improves, lest this be the last time we see the Muppets for another 20 years.

Saved from the disaster it could have been
21 February 2020
With modest expectations, Sonic ends up being a decent movie all around. It's a predictable story and there are a few cringeworthy scenes here and there, but it satisfies on other accounts like giving a little something to all ages in the audience. One of the movie's greatest creative choices is not taking itself too seriously (it's a fast blue hedgehog, we don't need Zack Snyder for this one) and Jim Carrey's goofy & great performance proves that. The movie by itself I'd give a 6/10, but it deserves an extra point for doing the unthinkable and listening to consumers. If the studio hadn't changed the design, it could've very well ruined the movie, as well as the future of video game adaptations in general. I hope at least the money they made off my ticket speaks to other studios that they may follow Paramount's lead.

The Mild West
16 August 2019
The Ballad of Buster Scruggs is certainly a unique movie for this time, but that does not make it astounding. Of the six stories, about half are actually decent but the rest are either bad, boring, or pointless, or all three of them. I also dislike how drastically different the tone is between the 'actual' ballad of Buster Scruggs from the other stories, like the directors were ready to make the west wild, but then pulled their punches going forward. However, I must also mention some great shots and cinematography. Even though Buster Scruggs can't keep its momentum throughout the movie, all these stories feel like the Wild West, like you're living a part of it.

Hateful Eight out of Ten
14 August 2019
Tarantino's non-sequential formula works yet again in this tense Western mystery. It achieves what great movies do and leaves you thinking even after the credits rolled, giving you thoughts like, "What if this guy was lying?" or such. One aspect of the movie I did not like was the immersion-breaking and wholly unnecessary narration, even if it was by the man himself. Unapologetically gruesome and vile, The Hateful Eight earns its place among Tarantino's greats.

A Bug's Life (1998)

Dangerously Underrated
14 August 2019
A Bug's Life is nothing less than a great film that has unfortunately been forgotten to the new generation but remains cherished by us. The animation shows its age, but the quality of the story certainly does not. I'm sad to see that this movie never got the attention needed to warrant a sequel, but I am also glad a sequel has not been made that would tarnish the first's conclusive ending. This Pixar masterpiece has since been swept under the rug, but it still fulfills its promise to this day to serve as good entertainment for kids and adults alike.

Not about Pineapples or Expresses
12 August 2019
The headline's a joke, by the way. Pineapple Express is not much more than a fun 'n dumb popcorn flick, but it still makes for good entertainment. I'm not usually a fan of Seth Rogen's typical slapstick-y style, but this one roped me in unsuspectingly. Had a good time watching it, but I have no reason to think about it more after the credits roll.

Simple yet effective
12 August 2019
In a cinematic culture obsessed with spectacle and wonder, No Country for Old Men lassos your leg and pulls you down to the ground that is real life. No tricks, no cards up its sleeve, this movie delivers the plot at face value, not caring about romanticism or extravaganza, but only what is, even if that hurts.

Finishing the movie, I wasn't quite sure what the message was, and I still don't. The only thing I can suppose is that this movie is whatever the viewer makes it out to be, and that's certainly not a bad thing.

Tugs on the Heartstrings
12 August 2019
This movie surprised me in many ways; how deeply every detail was thought out, how relatable the characters are, and how it made me feel both during the movie and after the credits rolled. Like the OS herself, this film lives and breathes with a beating heart that challenges your perspective on what love is all about.

Weird, trippy, strangely good?
26 July 2019
Like most stoner movies, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas has a very loose plot, but unlike most stoner movies, it still has enough substance to make it work. I really don't know why but I just kind of like this movie. No punches are pulled when it comes to the insanity and depravity of all the actions in this movie.

It delivers on its scary promise of being both a faithful adaptation and a quality horror movie. It proves that the horror genre can still have decent plots and that the world of book adaptations still have some hope to hold on to.

No doubt in my mind that I'm in love with this movie
21 July 2019
You would think a movie born out of a corporate conflict would be messy and awful, but this is quite the opposite. Shrek achieves all it promises, giving us a hilarious and heartfelt story, characters with more layers that an onion, and stunning and creative animation for the time. Aside all the memes and online jokes, Shrek is a near-flawless masterpiece that has held up incredibly in its 18 year lifespan (it's hard for me to say that) and gives its competition a run for their money. Two green, ogre-sized thumbs way up.

You're in for a ride
19 July 2019
Point Break delivers on the fronts of both adrenaline-filled action and compelling story. The twist is predictable but the ending is far from it. Keanu Reeves's acting in this one can be cheesy at times, but this does not affect the overall performance of the character nor does it tamper with the general quality of the movie.

Simply put, awful
12 July 2019
This has got to be one of the worst movies I've seen in theaters in a long while. I don't know how it did so well critically. It tries to be unsettlingly weird, but comes off as bizarre and stupid. A drawn out and pointless plot, unlikeable and unrelatable characters, and so many scenes that range from boring to ludicrous all make for a movie that makes a pube muffin sound more appetizing.

For a jungle, it's pretty tame

The title encapsulates the majority of my thoughts about this movie. Robin Williams is a standout exception as always among other performances ranging from average to below average, along with some unique practical effects.

Labyrinth (1986)

Enjoyable but flawed
8 July 2019
Labyrinth seems to have the same strengths and weaknesses as its predecessor, The Dark Crystal. It creates a magical, breathing world filled with life and wonder, complemented by incredible scenery, puppetry, and performances. But alas, its story fails to grip onto the viewers' attention. Jennifer Conelly's character came off more as bratty and annoying than the intended naive and curious. I feel like if they just hired a much younger actor, her character would be greatly improved. All in all, the story is pretty dull, but is luckily aided by incredible visuals and art to give this movie a fun factor to it.

Fun movie with rare message
8 July 2019
This movie tackles a topic rarely discussed in family films but should definitely be more often; divorce. Its handling of the subject is the best part in an otherwise fun movie. At points, it is a little too slapstick for my taste, and it never quite reaches the standard of a timeless classic, but it qualifies plenty as a good family film.

Mr. Worldwide
3 July 2019
Spider-Man: Far From Home proves for a second time that Spidey can be consistently fun and compelling if handled by the right people. Tom Holland nails it again and all other aspects of this movie are no short of amazing. It also includes some surprisingly trippy visual effects.

Pulp Fiction (1994)

Largely a good film
3 July 2019
Pulp Fiction is what it advertises; a handful of sinful stories featuring highly flawed but undeniably likable characters all coming together in an unsequential amalgamation that leaves you with the same feeling of completing a jigsaw puzzle. There are occasional parts with robotic dialogue and dragged on scenes that make you feel like the movie isn't doing anything at the moment, but these flaws are overshadowed by the other great stories and performances. Also, it goes without saying that Samuel L. Jackson is the best part of this movie.

Rarer than diamonds
28 June 2019
Once in a very, very long while, there's a game that shatters the mold, that defies the status quo, that goes the path least trodden. In Minecraft's case, instead of taking a step forward, they took one back, and it works phenomenally. A truly generation-defining game that deserves a spot among the greats like PAC-man and Super Mario.

Actually the best show
28 June 2019
To date, this is the only show that not only never falters in quality, but is consistently fantastic for all five seasons. It deserves all the praise it gets and more. It holds the title of my favorite show with an iron grip and won't let go any time soon.

This is what everyone went insane about?
28 June 2019
It's hard to believe that this stupid, very average movie gained so much buzz from everyone, even making foreign relations tighter. But under shiny feathers is just a lame duck. It serves little beyond the surface of political shock and is no more special than a cookie-cutter Netflix movie. Granted it is not an awful movie and has redeemable qualities, but it never reaches close to delivering on the level of hype surrounding it.

Toy Story 4 (2019)
The ending after the ending
24 June 2019
Toy Story 4 is a quality sequel that stands shorter among the other films in its series, but standing alone is a strong story. It is crafted to please old fans and new alike and delivers a nice "once and for all" ending. Also, I really like how the characters move like they would in real life. (I.e. some are stiff and jointed while others are flexible)

It's an alright movie to watch but doesn't offer much more substance than, "Look, planes shooting each other!"
