  • Americans bad; Asians good. How did it ever get made?

Just saw the creator and I loved it. I marveled at the cinematography in the trailer, too, but barely noticed it in the film. Not because it wasn't still deliciously beautiful and massive, and overwhelming (Nomad), but because i was so caught up in the story, I had no time to marvel at scenery.

I've seen many reviewers, and a lot of comments here, too, about all the sci-fi tropes used in the plot, but no one seems to understand homage. I didn't even notice these cliches because I've been reading sci-fi for 60 years and all sci-fi stories have a few elements of other sci-fi stories. I believe it's because most sci-fi writers all see the way it's very probably going to go down in the future (from our present), and some of those scenarios are very much respected in the field. Because I'm used to these tales being similar, I didn't even notice one.

What I did notice, and was very emotionally impacted by, was the so endearing little girl, the emotional journey of her caretaker, the sorrow of the Robot society for it all having come to this, and the usual termination greed of the American society. I have seen this kind of death and destruction from us in many war movies, but it hits a little differently when the victims are sympathetically drawn.

There's all this hew and cry right now about AI, for different reasons, sure, but we'd better get ready for the time when we have to accept intelligent, sentient robots as living creatures just like us. We have always had an enormous problem with "the stranger", "the other", "the different". The time is not far down the road when we will have to deal with this, and The Creator is an excellent, wonderfully entertaining, cautionary tale about how, once again, we'll be doing it wrong.

  • Exactly what would happen if a city in America was abandoned.

This is an excellent depiction of how a city would deteriorate if cut loose from everyone else. I had no idea it was adapted from a comic, or that Ava DuVernay was at the reins. She did an epic job! As did Rosario, Benjamin, Hoon, Freddy and that cute little kid, Jordan. Also, shout-out to Ernest Dickerson and Paul Garnes!

It started slowly, totally involved in the world-building, but the end of the second episode got me off the sofa in astonishment. It was an abrupt, and completely unanticipated, twist that made me hungry for more.

Rosario anchors the story and she does it well. I think she is one of the most intelligent actors working today. She never gives too much or too little, and all with a commanding presence. Benjamin is comically crazy, but still terrifying. Hoon is wonderful as, perhaps, the only sane man on the island. But he and the story make it clear that all is not as it seems with him. The little kid, Jordan, is the child that Rosario really needs and Freddy is totally the star of the show. This man has unimaginable range and brings it all to bear on this character.

This series has heart! Something we rarely see on TV, or at least not often enough. Thanks to all the creators for giving me such a pleasurable two nights of television. I sure hope HBO re-considers and brings us a second season. There's so much more story that could be told!

  • Surprisingly Delightful!!

I LOVED it! loved it, loved it, loved it! even more than the first movie. back then there were parameters black movies had to strictly attend to. we couldn't be too much like ourselves or it was offensive and the society was so much more rigid back then. screw all that! this movie had more down home, unaffected, just plain 'ol black humor than i think i've ever seen. it was more like Richard Pryor than Kevin Hart. i'm shocked to see it's PG-13 rather than R like the first one. but times have changed. it was just one long continuous laugh! at least for me. i was barely a few minutes in before i realized this was going to be one long comedy sketch rather than a plot-driven normal movie. i think that's why many didn't get it. they expected more normal, and that this is not! it was wonderfully ridiculous and ridiculously wonderful. it was not what i expected at all! i really got into Eddie Murphy, too. i can't say I'm a huge fan, but i loved him in this. he was contemplative, uncertain, regal and full of love. something i've not often seen him be. i loved the new actor who played his son, too. and can we talk about the extraordinary genius of costumer Ruth Carter? she and the production designer must have been one upping each other. they made it a colorful, extravagant joy to watch. (the mansion actually belongs to rapper Rick Ross) the actress playing the eldest daughter was a great find, too. she was so beautiful and so sympathetically stoic. just loved her! all the great cameos, and unexpected music, which made some parts so righteously sexy, as black musical art often is. all in all a most pleasant evening of movie watching. i'm not much into comedies but this set a high bar for me. it's a great comedic counterpoint to the Black Panther! there's one great whoa cameo during the end credits. don't miss it!
