Javier Gutiérrez, Mario Casas, Bruna Cusí, and Iris Vallés Torres in The Occupant (2020)

The Occupant

7/10

This is why Javier Gutiérrez is one of the best Spanish actors in the last decade.

The film has a simple premise, but it is strengthened by another stupendous performance by Javier Gutiérrez, who along with Antonio de la Torres are, in my opinion, the two best Spanish actors in recent years. Javier Muñoz represents the decline of the perfect life of a man, who longing for his best days, decides to ruin the perfect life of that man who he understands has taken his place and has taken away what has belonged to him during all the past years. It is still a perfect portrait of thousands of men who, longing for a perfect life, decide to do whatever it takes to achieve their most pathological wishes. It is incredible what the most twisted mind of a human being is capable of when it seeks to achieve what its own mind has idealized, in this case, a perfect home with all it's components. It is not a perfect movie, it does not have a 'punchline', but it is sustained in another masterful performance by Gutiérrez.

Gave me anxiety

I see this as a Spanish parasite. Every time Javier intrude his old home it gave me anxiety on whether he's gonna be caught. It is a riveting psychological thriller on a man who do anything to gain power, with awesome performances.

It will keep you interested

Well to be honest i like these type of movies. The movie went well and keep you interested however there is nothing special coming. Lead actor Javier will get all back without a hiccup which is annoying for me other than that its a good watch. i enjoyed it.

occupant

Occupant is a film that some people call spanish parasite, and even if they are some similiarities this film also has some originality in it and it had a very strong performances and a very good and mind opened film, occupant is one of better foreign film this year and with platform, spain proved how they can make some great but some disturbing staff and put it in a film, but that is just a plus from me,twists and ending in a movie are also made with a lot of quality and precise and it paid of in end, occupant was a very good watch for me and i had in most of time blast watching it and i recommend it to people interesed in it

Evil

Spanish thrillers are quite something. The moral code might feel off for many and there is quite the wrongness to a lot of things happening. But the moviemakers do not judge, they just tell. And sometimes that means as a viewer you don't know which direction the movie is going.

Also it is quite evil to make us feel sorry for a character who is not "good" by a long shot. Having said, the story is quite entertaining and our main character is intriguing. We get his struggle, but do we also get his decisions and actions? That is up to you to decide ... but the movie itself is really having you on the edge of your seat. Someone wrote the movie him anxiety ... without even reading the whole context, I totally get it. This is not easy and mostly not pleasant (in a traditional sense)

Very different content with weird elements

Hogar means home in Spanish! Hogar or The occupant is a nicely crafted movie with a great acting and scenamatography. While there's a scarcity of content, this movie rise up with an extraordinary one! Starts so good and keeps you embezzled with whats gonna happen next. The apartment on which the movie is centered around is so beautiful that you fap in love with it and don't wonder why the protagonist or an antagonist in another perspective does all this to achieve it! Perfect and so entertaining!

Very nice

Very nice and entertaining suspense story that manages to combine a very simple plot of ambition with an atmosphere of continuous anxiety seen from the point of view of the villain.

One of the most improbable plot ever

Xavier Gutiérrez is a very good actor, and his acting is credible; unfortunately the plot it is not. Second half of the movie is a series of embarrassing and obvious situations which, on the other hand, have been badly done.

As dark as it gets

Good character building, great editing and commendable performance delivered by Javier Gutiérrez Álvarez who plays the protagonist... but it is not appeasing and the climax is quite distressing and then it is as dark as it gets... it is not a Hollywood cliche and not made for mass kind movie .. a dark psycho thriller that you would want to watch I love Lucy or friends before you go to bed :-)

Won't appeal to mainstream simple-minded folk

And I say this with no intent on being condescending. But this is the conclusion I have come to after reading several one star reviews.

This is a film that lacks Hollywood style elements meant to cater to the masses. There is no triumph here. No climax and no appeasing. Just evil. If you can appreciate a good psychological thriller with a dose of clever criminality, you will most certainly enjoy this.

Home sweet home, or not

Hogar is a very good Spanish drama-thriller with an excellent casting, good cinematography and a good script. First, Javier G here steals the show. His acting is brilliant and realistic. Second, the cinematography is great here too. Beautiful Barcelona is always a good choice. Last, the script is quite good. Even there aren't a lot of twists the ending makes you think about the whole thing. And that's important for me. So, overall an excellent option to enjoy during our days of lockdown.

Nothing in this plot made sense.

We don't know what the protagonist wants for the first half of the film and when it's clear (due to a deus ex machina) there's no one to empathize with. Full of narrative holes and with a bad ending.

Spanish Parasite.

The Occupant / Hogar has a stellar lead performance, who drives an exciting thriller with a strong story and interesting characters.

from normal to dark

This one isn't that simple to review because I would spoil it all. It doesn't have any suspense at all because you know exactly what is going to happen .

But it's the way he does it and how he does it that makes you being attached towards the screen. Perfect acting, perfect casting. What looks like a happy life slowly turns into a dark story.

Weird, you do know where this one is going and still you want to know how it ends, not bad at all.
