    better than expected

Like reviewer "batoja" I agree that the 2020 German production "Lindenberg! Mach dein Ding" is surprisingly good! I did't know much about singer Udo Lindenberg and this biopic showed his interesting past that was totally new to me. This film is about him becoming the German Star everybody knows today. So it must have been even harder for actor Jan Bülow to play this role convincingly since everybody will compare his appearance with the actual person. I think he did a great job embodying this character.

Jan Bülow plays drums and sings himself. He must have trained for this role for a long time. Like other biopics of Superstars like Ray Charles ("Ray") or Miles Davis ("Miles Ahead"), this productions doesn't shy away from darker sides of the personality in question and here they also show you the struggle of a young and hungry for life musician.

The songs have been re-recorded and we see a lot of performances. If you are into music and music business this is for you. If you just want to enjoy another story of the rise of a musician, then you will get a glimpse of what it takes.

Additional great cast: Ruby O. Fee, Ella Rumpf and Detlev Buck.

    Who's bad(?)

Lindenberg bad - or any kind of bad for that matter. It seems like the people reviewing the movie have not had much insight into who Lindenberg is or was, before he became famous. There seems to be a mystery with him. Something that I reckon will be uncovered - so obviously if you like him to remain far away and untouchable ... maybe you shouldn't watch the movie.

For anyone else, I can highly recommend this. As I and others already stated, you don't have to know much about him. For a biopic (and a German one at that, if you have some reservations) this is more than fairly well done. You really get behind the thoughts and into the head of Lindenberg - yes he did his thing, as the title suggests. And he did it well. This being a European production, there is going to be nudity, I don't think that should be surprising. Yes he also does like to be a freak in the sheets - no matter what you think of his celebrity persona.

Very well played (no pun intended) by everyone involved and nicely edited and put together.

A story of overcoming your fears and beliefs

I hesitated to watch this movie, because I hardly knew Udo Lindenberg - let alone being a fan of him. However, you don't need to be in order to enjoy this movie. It's a universal story of overcoming inherited fears and beliefs, childhood trauma, and the expectations of others, in order to become who you really are. More beautifully and intensely made than I have seen in any other movie, and based on a true story with many twists and turns.

I'm still not a fan of Mr. Lindenberg's music but that's ok. I highly respect what he achieved in his life. Not the fame. The ability to emancipate himself from his own wounding and do his thing, which is probably the biggest challenge of all.

Congratulations to the team and the great cast. I enjoyed especially Saskia Rosendahl who gave proof that also in Germany you can be beautiful and a good actress at the same time. Well done. Best movie in a long time.

Nice biopic - big hit in Germany

Udo Lindenberg is one of Germanys greatest rockstars. He manages to be around since the early 70ies. Up to today he records and goes on tour, fillioing the biggest venues. This biopic about his childhood and first steps into his uniquecareer was made with a lot of dedication. The settings and stages are for real: Gronau in the 50ies, Hamburg St. Pauli in the early 70ies. Great music of course, we see Udo developing his own voice and style - indeed, he was the first german singer singing rock music in his own language, and being successfull. As a Lindenberg fan, you may appreciate the whole story. But to have a clever story, the script doesn't tell the whole story - a lot of career steps just were taken away, e.g. Udo had some really cool jobs as a jazz and rock drummer beside the jobs we see in the film. Big names in his career like Klaus Doldinger are not mentioned. The filmmakers are more into showing Udos private life - and later on towards the films end, they are just a bit too pretentious with showing Udo for 15 minutes as an alcohol drinking kind of guy - but whats the point in this? Maybe they better could have shown him recording his 1st hit album - but thats the way biopics go, you have to add some drama.... in the end this film will be very successfull in Germany, and even for foreign film lovers there is a lot to see and hear - and don't miss supporting role Detlev Buck as Mattheisen, the greasy slick Teldec A&R manager :-)
