Tom Pelphrey needs to win a Globe and Emmy! 🏆
Top_Dawg_Critic30 March 2020
Wow. Wow! This episode is the greatest and most powerful episode I have ever seen in my life - out of any TV show. Tom Pelphrey had my gut wrenching with his performance. Even from the two previous episodes, I noticed his outstanding performance, but this one is award worthy! What a tense and amazing episode. The writers upped their game in season 3, and this episode is sheer perfection. There's zero anyone could've done to make this any better than it was. For that matter, I haven't seen a better TV show OR movie illustrate mental health challenges - specifically bipolar disorder, better than Tom Pelphrey's character and performance. Again, wow. 🙌

Where do they get these actors??!!!
gmfreeman10 April 2020
Two actors I have never heard of, Julia Garner (loved her from the start) and Tom Pelphrey...I have been impressed with ALL the actors since the beginning (who knew Jason Bateman had this in him?) Tom absolutely blew me away at the start of this episode, and Laura Linney was devastating at the end, taking the only route she could under the circumstances. We watched this episode last night, and I'm still drained this morning. Just don't understand the negative reviews. This has been one of the best series I've ever seen...watch it if you can.

One of the best the depictions of mania ever done on TV
abwetman-1-81732829 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This episode of Ozark shows one of the most honest depiction of a person during a manic episode. The self delusion, the bad judgements and damage both emotionally and financially.

Tom Pelphrey acting amazing with very hard material

Many user reviews are terrified at such honest portrayal of serious mental illness.

Just paused and came here to check who is the actor playing the Ben character.
redlightlessness3 April 2020
The taxi scene at the beginning was unbelievable. Can't even put it into words how i felt. I just haven't watched acting like that for a very long while.

Tom Pelphrey seems to be more of a comet than a star.

Tom Pelphrey is a treasure
mcbwallace29 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I felt the need to comment on this episode specifically because of the amazing acting by Tom Pelphrey - who was already one of the few bright spots in Iron Fist. I do NOT watch movies/tv shows that manipulate audiences into tears. Hate them. This episode was beautiful, sad, frustrating, and so insightful.

****SPOILER ALERT****** Throughout the episode Ben tried to right his wrongs, consistently doing it the wrong way and making matters worse (and Wendy is THE worst at watching an unstable person). It was heartbreaking and annoying (that Wendy couldn't keep an eye on him for a second). Few, maybe no other, actors, could portray the part of Ben sympathetically, believably, and in an understated manner. It was easy to make the connection between his off-med and on-med character. They were truly the same person under different circumstances. If there is an Emmy or a Golden Globe for Tom Pelphrey to be nominated fore, submit this episode please

. You can also submit any episode for Julia Garner, she is always amazing. Her character always stays true to herself while still evolving. The same with her nephews Wyatt, and even Three who doesn't get a lot of screen time.

Great show, characters, story, and cast. Every season is better than the next.

You people CAN'T be serious!
matiasbockerman29 March 2020
There are two reviews in current moment both low rating. I disagree. I haven't words to describe how spectacular this episode was. The directing, writing, tension and that INSANE acting. This was so...heartbreaking. one of The best episodes in quite some time. Very impressive.

Heartbreaking
falcondj30 March 2020
This episode is heartbreaking in many ways, but the acting and directing got me feeling bad and scared for Wendy and Ben (2 characters I don't even like). If they can make me feel that way for characters I do not like, then imagine the anxiety that the show writers can create when the show involves its best characters.

Side note: Seriously people, get off Breaking Bad's nuts. Breaking Bad was a fantastic show, but 90 percent of negative reviews about Ozark come from Breaking Bad fanboys and fangirls who think Breaking Bad is the only show of its kind allowed. Knock it off.

Tom Pelphrey and the frightening life
bosogea12 April 2020
This episode makes me think about some relatives and people i used to know that i avoid because of their mental problems. I felt so sad and so dissatisfied with my behaviour... This kind of acting, Pelphrey s, is so pure and violent, i cannot define it.

Heartbreaking at its core
IgnisReinhard4 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
There's a moment in Ozark when the faith of the characters is inevitable and it's written by the cartel. The tension of this episode is based on the fact that you know what is going to happen, your subconscious expects it but you grasp to every hint that it is going to get better and that there can be a good ending. Sadly there isn't one and as the episode progresses it becomes clearer. Ben was introduced by him beating a man mowing the lawn in front of the class he was teaching, he was bipolar and unstable as it was established multiple times during the season. What struck me is Wendy, at the beginning of the season we can hear her having bad dreams while mumbling "I can't", she imagined she would have killed her husband but little did she know she would be screaming the same words while leaving her brother to get murdered by the cartel in the parking lot of a restaurant. As I said before, there's a false feeling of hope you cling on while watching this season finale, it starts dying in the moment when Wendy sees him buying a burner phone, in that precise moment she chooses her family over him. To add to the sadness of the episode, in Ben's last meal he prospects for himself a future that sounds completely normal and you get a punch on your gut when you see the cartel's hires assassin coming. There isn't nothing like the bond between two siblings but the cartel still wins and Wendy, while on the phone with Marty, shows all her desperation, sadness and the realization of what she did and how powerless she was in this situation crushes her. It will be interesting to watch the important repercussions on Ruth, Wendy herself and her children. Unarguably the best episode of this season and probably of the entire show.

Psycho-Ben
markus-21-5077253 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Ben is a real psychopath. He was beating the hell out of someone in a bar, because he didn't like his tie. He really belongs in a mental institution. Right there, that should have been the end of Ben.

Instead, twisted Ruth, gets that useless pile of skunk out, so he can blur out secrets of the cartel, jeopardizing Ruth's life, and the life of the Byrde family.

I was trying to reach out to Ruth: "Why, Ruth? Why do you want to spend one day with that low-life, in exchange for having him, and yourself killed the next day? You're smarter than that!"

Then Wendy saves the day by hiding Ben, and tries to help him again, again, and again, and again. It comes down to if Wendy, her husband and kids, and Ben will be killed; or just Psycho-Ben -- its a no-brainer!

I have the suspicion it wasn't Ben that was cremated after Nelson delivered his body, and that Ben will be back in season 4.

Mmmm a little too unrealistic here
richardrc-1859616 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Ok, so I've worked in the actual mental hospital where he, in real life, would have been sent in Missouri. And trust me, he wouldn't be getting out like that or having visitors. It's maximum security. More unrealistic fabrications by this show. This is my first time writing any review on this show but I figured I drop in and leave some facts here. If he was actually on bipolar medication, something like a lithium and seroquil combo with a PRN, and working there I have seen it all, he would not be able to function normally just starting and stopping. That stuff is hardcore and requires bloodwork and follow ups. Also, if he was previously committed, he would not be wandering around so freely state to state no boundaries. He would have a mentor or someone to check in with. Also, when he was arrested and had the warrant, the bureau that held the warrant wasn't calling to expedite him?

If the Byrd family really cared about him, he would be re-committed and not released without the guardians permission. No clue how he was released in the first place. I give it some points for acting but story and reality is a no.

Incredible performance

I've never seen anyone nail the trauma of mental illness like Tom Pelphrey did in this episode. It dragged me back (somewhat reluctantly) to my own episodes from my past. And as other people have said, it was heartbreaking.

This episode is exceptional. Brilliant acting, heart-wrenching storyline - just the epitome of good drama. Watching it the 2nd time around was even better. The actors who play Wendy and Ben need some sort of serious acknowledgment for their amazing skills. 10/10 episode. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Tom Pelphrey better get an Emmy

As if ep 8 didn't highlight his acting chops, the first 5 minutes of ep 9 almost guarantee his Emmy nod. This season is intense.

IMDB expects more, so ... fabulous poignant performances from Tom Pelphrey and Laura Linney in a tender episode about their sibling relationship.

I've sent so many people to The Ozarks and they've all come back saying it's their best show. This episode start to finish is a masterclass in emotional acting. Both Ben and Wendy were amazing. How on earth do you draw on your art to perform at that level. It was a true privilege to watch those two. Personally this has been the best season and to get a better glimpse of cartel, even they have problems was a welcome sideline. I OWN YOU !!!!

Tom Pelphrey and Laura Linney
andrewkempf10 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Some of the best acting performances I've ever seen in my entire life. From start to finish, this episode was pure perfection. Tom Pelphrey and Laura Linney produced numerous scenes that were some of the best scenes I've ever seen in my entire life. The opening taxi scene with Ben sitting in the back talking was absolutely jaw dropping, and the last scene with Wendy breaking down most likely left 99% of fans in tears with their jaw dropped. These two are just the two standouts of an absolutely astonishingly good crew. Best episode of Ozark by far. God bless everyone who made this show happen.

Please kill Ben
robydemarzi2 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This is my personal opinion and I know it's not popular at all but I hated Ben's character from the first second he was on the show. Even when he was still sane he was soooo annoying and of course Marty was right wanting him away asap, you can't have a person like that around a criminal organisation. But no, he made everyone acting illogically the whole season, especially Ruth and Wendy.

I was hoping he was a secondary character but instead he became the cornerstone of the whole season. Even in this episode I was hoping for him to get killed soon but instead they dragged the whole situation for an interminable time (60 minutes for this episode where nothing happens!!). I was so frustrated...

Even here I go against the general opinion but I found also his acting over the top and annoying.

I never wanted a supposedly "good" character to die as much as in this season of Ozark, which for me was ruined although it had good potential.
