Fresh off the success of one of the most terrifying horror movies of 2024, "Longlegs," director Osgood Perkins is back with an adaptation of Stephen King's 1980 short story "The Monkey," and now we have the first trailer for the project. The highly-anticipated horror movie will see Perkins bring his brand of terror to King's tale of a cursed monkey toy that kills off people with a simple clap of its cymbals. Perkins writes and directs this adaptation of "The Monkey," which also has a killer cast including Theo James ("The White Lotus"), Tatiana Maslany ("She-Hulk: Attorney at Law"), and Elijah Wood.
The new trailer follows a teaser for "The Monkey" that was released back in August and gives us a great look at Perkins' latest project. The writer/director has previously delivered lower-budget fare in the form of "The Blackcoat's Daughter," "I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House,...

Osgood Perkins is still walking on his “Longlegs” high.
After the horror writer/director made history as Neon’s highest-grossing film (even surpassing Best Picture winner “Parasite” at the box office), Perkins unveiled the trailer to his follow-up Neon feature, “The Monkey.”
The film is based on Stephen King’s 1980 short story of the same name. Perkins wrote and directed the adaptation, which stars Theo James as twins Bill and Hal who discover their dad’s monkey toy in the attic. Of course, murder ensues.
Elijah Wood, Tatiana Maslany, Christian Convery, Colin O’Brien, Rohan Campbell, and Sarah Levy co-star.
“The Monkey” is produced by James Wan, Dave Caplan, Michael Clear, Chris Ferguson, and Brian Kavanaugh-Jones.
And while horror staples Wan and King are behind the film, Perkins told The Hollywood Reporter that “The Monkey” is his most comedic feature yet.

Osgood Perkins can’t avoid the associations of being a horror director who is also the son of Anthony Perkins, who starred in Alfred Hitchcock‘s “Psycho” as a cross-dressing, mother-obsessed murderer. The filmmaker, who as an actor had a small role in the “Psycho” sequel from 1983 as a kid and then most memorably as an adult in “Legally Blonde” as Elle Woods’ dorky classmate, has made original horror on introspective terms for the past decade.

The horror film stars Maika Monroe as Lee Harker, Nicolas Cage, Alicia Witt, Blair Underwood, and Dakota Daulby. This looks So extremely unsettling and scary - and the buzz from early reviews is that it really is one of the best horror films of 2024. Maybe even of this decade. This trailer finally reveals...

The marketing campaign for Neon’s “Longlegs” is the most ambitious for a horror movie in recent times. There’s a zodiac killer-level secret code spread in The Seattle Times, a phone number you can dial in to hear star Nicolas Cage whisper threats in a creepy voice (and as advertised on a Los Angeles billboard), and the eerie and elusive trailers and teasers that have dropped so far, mostly leaving Cage’s satanic serial killer out of the bag.
The ’90s-set satanic serial killer horror in the vein of “Seven” and “The Silence of the Lambs” is directed by Osgood Perkins, the “Gretel & Hansel” filmmaker who is, yes, the son of “Psycho” screen scream icon Anthony Perkins. There's no greater fear than the unknown. Our heritage as beings evolved from organisms whose survival instinct was developed thousands of years ago means that we're all afraid of the literal and/or metaphorical dark, if for no better reason than we inherently know that danger can lie in wait within those unseen spaces. With knowledge comes logic, reason, and enlightenment, but there are still many questions about existence without answers, chief among them what else may exist beyond our corporeal forms. The conception of a God or Gods is a comforting one, but as logic follows, the existence of both good and evil in the world could mean that there is no God without a Devil.
It's that ambiguous, unresolved fear we all have about the nature of evil and its potential tangibility that writer/director Osgood Perkins has demonstrated an uncanny knack for tapping into. From his debut,...

Nicolas Cage is going to star in the upcoming independent horror film titled Longlegs. While the film looks very modern, it’s actually a throwback to one Old Hollywood icon. Interestingly the director of Longlegs has a major connection to the icon in question.
Nicolas Cage’s ‘Longlegs’ was inspired by 1 of the best directors ever
Longlegs will be directed by Oz Perkins. So far, Perkins is most famous for his films I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House and Gretel & Hansel. During a 2020 interview with Polygon, Perkins discussed Longlegs, saying it was inspired by the work of cinematic legend Alfred Hitchcock. Hitchcock is remembered for horror films and thrillers such as Psycho, The Birds, Rear Window, Vertigo, and North by Northwest. His movies often have good humor and a psychosexual subtext. Hitchcock might be the most acclaimed director of all time, with Stanley Kubrick being his only real rival.

The trailer for Longlegs, Nicolas Cage’s new horror movie, makes it looks like a serial killer film. Interestingly, Cage compared the film to a character from Pinocchio. However, the film was directed by the son of a horror movie legend.
Nicolas Cage said ‘Longlegs’ is about ‘a possessed Geppetto’
Anthony Perkins was a talented actor who appeared in numerous films and television shows, but he will always be most remembered for playing Norman Bates in Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho. Bates was one of the first realistic serial killers to be portrayed onscreen in an American movie. Perkins would reprise the role in three sequels. His son, Oz Perkins, is now a horror director known for the offbeat films Gretel & Hansel and I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House. He also directed Cage’s upcoming film, Longlegs.

A Stephen King horror story about a malevolent (sort of) doll almost sounds like something that could've been written specifically for James Wan to turn into a movie. But while the filmmaker behind "Saw," "Insidious," "The Conjuring," and "Malignant" is indeed involved in adapting "The Monkey" -- a short story King wrote for Gallery magazine in 1980 before later including it in his 1985 collection "Skeleton Crew" -- for the screen, he's only lending his services as a producer.
Instead, "The Monkey" is being written and directed by Osgood "Oz" Perkins, son of "Psycho" actor Anthony Perkins and the mind behind such creepily atmospheric and inventively stylized horror pictures as "The Blackcoat's Daughter," "I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House," and "Gretel & Hansel". Osgood Perkins is also currently riding high thanks to the buzz around "Longlegs," his upcoming occult serial killer horror-thriller that boasts one of the most intriguing trailers in recent memory.

Whenever I get asked to recommend a good horror movie- I immediately take into consideration who I’m recommending it to. The key to a good movie recommendation is to compliment the other person’s tastes and suggest something that will comfortably expand their horizons. It also helps if the movie you’re recommending is criminally underseen for how incredibly well-made it is. Here’s what I mean- In 2020- yes, That 2020- the entire world was affected by unprecedented events that caused the everyday lives of everyday people to dramatically change. One of the many industries that suffered during this time was the Movie Theater industry. It was rough. It was stale. It was fucking Groundhog Day. At first, there were delays- movies just weren’t coming out at all. Then, some that were meant for theaters and Imax ended up going straight to streaming, delays, delays, more delays.

Osgood Perkins, known for his uniquely dark and unsettling approach to horror in films like The Blackcoat’s Daughter and Gretel & Hansel, is set to terrify audiences once again with his latest project, Longlegs. Scheduled for release on July 12, 2024, by Neon, the film stars Maika Monroe, Nicolas Cage, Alicia Witt, and Blair Underwood in a story that mixes psychological thriller elements with a dash of the occult.

One of the most celebrated cinematic interpretations of Stephen King is the two-film adaptation of his seminal horror novel "It." Directed by Andy Muschietti, with the movies released in 2017 and 2019, "It" follows the twisted coming-of-age of a group of childhood friends in Derry, Maine. While the seven kids are harassed by neighborhood bully Henry Bowers (Nicholas Hamilton) and his gang of teenage ne'er-do-wells, a different kind of evil festers under Derry. Primarily appearing in the form of Pennywise the Dancing Clown (Bill Skarsgård), this otherworldly monster instills fear in its young victims before consuming them entirely.
Though the creature has haunted the region since ancient times, the first chapter takes place in the summer of 1989. That's when Pennywise surfaces to claim new victims around Derry while setting its sights on the main characters. Finding strength and solace in numbers, these friends refer to themselves share a bond under the banner...

Amidst all the hullabaloo about Showtime merging with Paramount+ and the continuing revival of older shows that nobody asked to be revived, you would be forgiven for missing that the Epix streaming platform formally rebranded as MGM+ on January 15, 2023. Osgood Perkins has earned a following by directing the horror films The Blackcoat’s Daughter (a.k.a. February), I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House, and Gretel & Hansel, plus an episode of The Twilight Zone. Now he has just guaranteed that his next horror project, Longlegs, is going to have even more eyes on it – because he has cast the great Nicolas Cage in the lead role!
In addition to starring in the film, Cage will also be producing Longlegs through his company Saturn Films, which recently had success with The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent and Pig. Also producing are Dan Kagan, Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, Dave Caplan, and Chris Ferguson. Jason Cloth and Fred Berger of Automatik serve as executive producers. Deadline notes that UTA and CAA Media Finance are co-repping worldwide sales on the film.
Perkins wrote the screenplay, but details on the plot are being kept completely under wraps.

Paramount Plus is busting out the popcorn: The ViacomCBS streamer is stuffing more than 1,000 movie titles into the service this week as it fights for ground in the streaming wars.
The new batch of flicks includes “Infinite,” Paramount’s sci-fi thriller starring Mark Wahlberg and Chiwetel Ejiofor and directed by Antoine Fuqua, which will exclusively debut on Paramount Plus this Thursday, June 10, alongside another 1,000-plus movies. All told, the company said, Paramount Plus will be stocked with more than 2,500 movie titles by the end of summer 2021.

Don’t get too taken in by a first impression — that’s a lesson learned by the characters in “Monday,” but it’s valuable advice for the audience as well. What starts out as a sexy, sun-soaked romp becomes a heartbreaking examination of two people who are absolutely wrong for each other.
Not just any filmmaker can craft sex scenes that are both exhilarating in the moment and, in the aggregate, essential to building plot and character, but director Argyris Papadimitropoulos manages that delicate balance. The Greek locations (shot by Hristos Karamanis) are gorgeous, but what starts like a travelogue winds up more of a tragedy.

A new year has arrived but Amazon Prime is looking to the past.
That’s not a bad thing mind you, as for its list of new releases in January 2021, Amazon is bringing back some classic movies and TV shows for its host of subscribers. We’ll get to the Amazon originals in a moment but for now, feast your eyes on January’s impressive library additions for the streamer.
Jan. 1 marks the arrival of all eight seasons of Dexter…roughly four and a half of which are great! Dexter will be receiving its own Michael C. Hall-approved revival later this year and thanks to Amazon you can catch up with the first run again. Speaking of show’s with disappointing conclusions, all nine seasons of How I Met Your Mother will come to Amazon on Jan. 19. Some movies of note arriving on Jan. 1 include Dr. Strangelove, The Truman Show,...

A new year means a new start. But in its list of new year releases for January 2021, Hulu is sending a message of…eh, we’ll get the year started in February. Not to be overly rude to the usually sturdy streaming service, but there’s not much going on for Hulu in 2021’s first month.
Perhaps the biggest release of note is something that already enjoyed a successful release for ITV in the U.K. The Sister is the lates thriller from Neil Cross (Luther) and it makes its U.S. debut on Hulu on Jan. 22. 2020 comedies Save Yourselves and Like a Boss both arrive on Jan. 1. Hulu original film The Ultimate Playlist of Noise premieres on Jan. 15 and TV series Everyone is Doing Great arrives on Jan. 13.

Hulu is kicking off the new year in style next month, with January set to deliver a ton of fresh titles to the Disney-owned streaming service. There’s a bunch of original content landing throughout the first few weeks of 2021, but probably the highlight is the incredible number of classic movies that are going up on the site on New Year’s Day. Whether you’re in the mood for iconic comedies, dramas, animated efforts or sci-fi flicks, there’s something for you on the way.
There are well over 100 films being added to Hulu’s library on January 1st, so let’s just pick out a few notable titles. The full Austin Powers trilogy is among them, and if you can’t get enough of Mike Myers, the first Shrek likewise becomes available. For dramas, there’s Robert Downey Jr. biopic Chaplin, Johnny Depp vehicle Donnie Brasco and Jim Carrey’s The Truman Show.

Movie fans focused on VOD value this week — an easy choice, with no new major releases. (That will change in a few days with the Warner Bros. original family title “Scoob!” at $19.99.) Sony’s “Bloodshot” opened the last weekend theaters operated, became a $19.99 premium VOD offering a few weeks later, and last Tuesday it dropped to $5.99. It now stands in the top three for all of our reported charts, including #1 at Amazon Prime, and #2 at FandangoNow which ranks by amount paid, not transactions.
“I Still Believe” dropped its prices to $5.99 this week, and their chart placements improved. This flags a potential issue: How many people will get used to holding off for a few weeks, in exchange for seeing the price drop by 60 percent or more? Many of these viewers were content to wait three months after initial theatrical play, so delaying rental for a month might not be a tough choice.

Horror filmmaker Jordan Peele – who many people had already called the modern-day Rod Serling – rebooted legendary sci-fi/supernatural anthology show The Twilight Zone last year, and the result was a hit for CBS All Access. Season 2 is now on the way and this new trailer promises that Peele, in his dual role as exec producer and narrator, will take us back to that eerie other dimension that’s not so different from our own for 10 more cautionary tales of terror.

The third feature from director Oz Perkins, Gretel & Hansel is a stylish, female-centric reimagining of the classic Grimm fairytale. Creepy and atmospheric rather than opting for traditional scares, it’s unquestionably worth seeing for Perkins’ distinctive visuals.
Set in an indistinct but fairytale-esque time and place, the film stars Sophia Lillis as level-headed 16 year old Gretel and Sammy Leaky as her 8 year old brother Hansel, who’s cute but not too smart. When they’re cast out by their mother due to famine and poverty (“Dig yourself some pretty little graves” is her parting advice), they have a few minor adventures (including a magic mushroom trip and an unsavoury job offer) before winding up deep in the woods at the surprisingly modern-looking home of...

May’s home media releases are off to a great start, as genre fans have a lot to get excited for this week. Two of the best genre films of the year are heading to both Blu-ray and DVD on Tuesday: Osgood Perkins’ Gretel & Hansel and The Lodge from Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala. Tigers Are Not Afraid (which was one of my favorite films of 2019) is getting the Steelbook treatment this week, and if you weren’t able to catch it in theaters, Bloodshot hits various formats as well.
Other Blu-ray and DVD releases for May 5th include Exorcism at 60,000 Feet, The House In Between, Cry Havoc, Insecticidal, and Becoming.

Hello again, dear readers. Right now, we’re living in unprecedented times, and it’s nice that, if nothing else, we still have entertainment to help us through all of this. Most of us are preparing for another month of self-isolation and thankfully we have a ton of horror and sci-fi titles hitting various VOD and Digital platforms throughout the month of April. Also, I decided to feature some special streaming events here as well, beyond the regular digital releases we usually get, as I thought it might be helpful to have as many distractions as we could possibly get over the next few weeks or so.

In her 4.5-star review, Heather Wixson wrote that Osgood Perkins' Gretel & Hansel is "a stunning adaptation that takes a familiar tale in surprising new directions," and if you missed it in theaters, you can experience the reimagining of the Brothers Grimm fairy tale in the comfort of your own home (perhaps with a sweet snack) when it comes to Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital.
Gretel & Hansel will arrive on digital platforms beginning April 7th, followed by a Blu-ray and DVD release on May 5th. The physical home media release will come with the "storybook" special feature.

Netflix’s I Am Not Okay with This stars It’s Sophia Lillis as an angsty teen who discovers that she has telekinetic powers.
I Am Not Okay with This may sound like a contemporary PSA shown in a mandatory Hr meeting, but it’s actually a teen-aimed Netflix television series adapting a graphic novel from Charles Forsman, the writer behind the comic source material for the streaming giant’s subversive coming-of-age series, The End of the F***ing World.
Sophia Lillis continues to parlay momentum from It and It Chapter Two, starring here as Sydney, a 15-year-old who’s already dealing with a lot of issues – grief over her war casualty father, hormonal crises and a case of body image dysmorphia – when her problems exponentially increase to supernatural levels upon the discovery that she possesses telekinetic powers; the thing is, she can’t quite control said powers,...

Presidents’ Day weekend belonged soundly to Sonic the Hedgehog, which enjoyed a debut atop the box-office weekend. The film took in $57 million over the weekend, outpacing second-place finisher (last weekend’s top film) Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn by approximately $40 million.
Although Birds of Prey lost the top spot this weekend, it still managed to bring in another $17.1 million to give the film a two-week total of $59.3 million. This was just ahead of the second debut of the weekend, Fantasy Island, which took the third spot with a tally of $12.4 million. Margot Robbie celebrates a great year this weekend with her Supporting Actress nomination for “Bombshell” and key presence in “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” And to be the lead (as well as a producer) for “Birds of Prey” (Warner Bros.) would normally mean that grossing $33 million is sufficient balm in case she doesn’t win.
Not so in this case for multiple reasons detailed soon. But the larger context first. Grosses in total will be down $20 million for the same weekend last year, something not seen thus far in 2020. That’s about an 18% drop from the $115 million in 2019, and at $95 million it’s the second time in six weekends the box office has fallen short of $100 million. Last year it didn’t happen twice until the normally slow Labor Day weekend.

Over the course of the past few years, we've seen a rise in period horror films that explore what fear would have been like centuries ago. Many of these films stray away from the tropes that horror movie buffs have come to know and love; slashers and house hauntings are exchanged for witches, crimes of religion, and classic takes on legendary monsters. Robert Eggers's films The Witch and The Lighthouse are great examples of this trend, and though not as critically successful, Gretel & Hansel has followed suit.
The new film follows the story of Gretel (Sophia Lillis), a young girl on the cusp of womanhood, and her brother, Hansel (Samuel Leakey). The pair lost their father when Hansel was young enough to not remember him, and the loss left their mother unable to cope, as she grew distant, cold, and often cruel toward her children. After Gretel fails...

Margot Robbie’s superheroine spinoff “Birds of Prey” is landing with a somewhat disappointing $34 million opening weekend at 4,236 North American sites, estimates showed Saturday.
The figure deflates hopes that “Birds of Prey” will become a hit. It’s significantly below Warner Bros.’ pre-release forecast of $45 million while rivals had “Birds of Prey” pegged for a $55 million launch. Friday’s take totaled $13 million (including $4 million in Thursday previews) with opening day audiences giving the film a B+ Cinemascore, with audiences under 25 awarding it an A-.
“Birds of Prey,” which carries a reported $80 million price tag, centers on Robbie’s vigilante Harley Quinn teaming up with superheroes Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) and Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez) to save Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco) from the crime lord Black Mask (Ewan McGregor). Reviews were generally favorable and led to an 82% “fresh” Rotten Tomatoes score.
