Should've been better
solojere18 November 2022
I was excited for this movie because it actually has a lot of good actors. Ben Platt was great in the Pitch Perfect movies and Dear Evan Hansen. And Kristen Bell is pretty much great in everything I have seen her in. However, these two actors couldn't save this train wreck. Simply put, The People We Hate at the Wedding is a mess. The premise is interesting enough a dysfunctional family comes together for a wedding. But the pacing is all over the place. The jokes were really dragged out and often didn't hit the mark. They are also all kinds of terrible people with first-world problems, which could just aren't that interesting. There wasn't a single character I related to or even liked. The pros are that it is on streaming, so you don't have to pay for it or see it in theaters. But I wouldn't recommend it and probably won't watch it again.

Really should be better with this good of a cast.
dfloro21 November 2022
Allison Janney has been nominated for and won so many awards over the past 30 years that it takes a separate, linked Wikipedia entry just to list them all. For her mere presence in this movie I must give this movie an extra star on its rating. And Kristen Bell, of Veronica Mars and Frozen fame (and all the ensemble & supporting roles in both TV & movies that she's had in between), isn't exactly chopped liver, y'know. So then why isn't this made-for-streaming movie better than it is? Honestly, I'm not sure. But if you're a big fan of these women (as I am), or of the young Tony-winning star of "Dear Evan Hansen," it's still worth the 99-minute investment to watch.

The People We Hate at the Wedding
CinemaSerf19 November 2022
Talk about contrived? Yikes! "Eloise" (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) makes the cardinal error of inviting her estranged and dysfunctional family to London for her posh wedding. Her brother "Paul" (Ben Platt) and his boyfriend "Dominic" (Karan Soni); her unpredictable and unreliable sister "Alice" (Kristen Bell) who is having an affair with her married, architect, boss and finally her mother "Donna" (Allison Janney). It seems that they all pretty much loathe each other in equal measure, but they all decide to attend and in so doing "Alice" hooks up with the handsome "Dennis" (Dustin Milligan - probably the only decent person in the whole thing) with the others going through the usual relationship tribulations that, aside from a fun scene in a Thames-side inflatable champagne dinghy - rarely raise even the faintest hint of a smile. What Miss Janney is doing in this is anyone's guess, and without a song to sing I am afraid that Platt is just, well flat! I think the trick with good comedy is having characters that we can at least like. I struggled here with all of them before the ending that could have been seen by a blind man from outer space. The soundtrack is quite good now and again, but otherwise the writing and direction offer us nothing at all new here and it almost left me wishing for Henry Golding's equally lacklustre Christmas effort from 2019!

Acerbic Putdowns and a Bracing Honesty Elevate This Wedding Comedy
EUyeshima19 November 2022
I didn't think this movie would stand a chance since it required an upfront exposition segment describing the contrived set-up of the wedding and why hostilities are brewing among the principal characters. However, after a while, the excessively honest one-liners started to land with acerbic precision, and I liked how the characters were exposed for their flaws and poor decisions. The cast headed by Allison Janney, Kristen Bell, and Ben Platt, is expert at executing physical comedy and delivering withering put-downs courtesy of the observant screenplay by Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin and Wendy Molyneux. Bell's and Platt's characters are pretty incorrigible, so this movie won't be for everyone.

Some definitely funny moments
sally-w2 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I liked it in the end - it is a bit disjointed to start and a bit formulaic however it hits it's stripes after a while and I found it quite human.

The people have normal human if a bit exaggerated feelings and when weird things happening to them and they deal with them in normal human ways.

Good for a rainy Sunday afternoon. I am biased I love Kristen Bell.

Lovely scenery - weird cars - great clothes - England and USA meet in a great misunderstanding - Alison Janey is her usual fantastic self.

A typical dysfunctional family having a great dysfunctional time with some weird assumptions challenged.

Over the top attempt at comedy - big let down
wookie-7878420 November 2022
This had the potential to be a funny film, instead I found myself kind of disgusted by some of the characters actions and dialogue. Very little was believable and some characters were really quite horrible, self absorbed, whiners. I know films are meant to exaggerate or be farcical sometimes but the situations these characters were in were so over the top it really made no sense. I wanted to root for at least one character but really didn't, none were that interesting and few had any redeeming qualities. Many reviewers commented on the location, I have to agree. London is a beautiful city and the best thing about the film is that it was mostly shot there.

What did you all expect from this movie ... an Oscar?
Ziggy19654 December 2022
It is a decent movie that I watched with my wife and she enjoyed the silliness of it all. Plus she likes Allison Janney from the show Mom. Yes all the characters were cardboard but there were some hilarious parts.

The best line was where Mr. Bottom told Alice the real reason why she behaved the way she did around men.

Yes it was silly but what did you expect from these actors. In the end it had a nice ending and everyone was happy and content.

My wife watches movies that I like and she tolerates it. So I can do the same and tolerate the movies that she enjoys. All in all it made for a good evening and beyond! :)

Depression - the only thing I took away from this movie
con823 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is just a bunch of scenes thrown together and I don't even think it's trying to be funny. To be honest I'm not sure exactly what this movie is meant to be. I went into it not knowing what to expect but I have enjoyed Kristen bell movies before, and I often watch movies with zero expectation and are presently surprised, but this is definitely not one of those times. Even the only nice (likeable) character - the guy from the plane who likes Alice, makes absolutely no sense she has displayed absolutely no reason why he should like her.

This movie is like they just threw everything that Netflix loves to include in movies in one giant incomprehensible mess. From divorced parents, multiple marriages, disapproval of gay sons, affairs, ... then mentioning everything on the other end of the scales and only using it it a negative way (the wife with the newborn is a psychopath)

You know when you watch a movie and the characters you initially detest grow and evolve and you want them to live happily ever after? Yea I didn't get that from these characters. I actually wanted them to live a missable life. I'm actually very surprised at the ending I expected the wedding to not go ahead. It would have fit more with the general feeling of the film.

I'd actually rate this as one of the stupidest movies I've ever seen in my life. There isn't really a better word to describe it. Even the "happy ending" didn't feel particularly happy LOL.

Cute but predictable!
bvalentine318 November 2022
Enjoyable, although totally predictable. The actors all gave it their best, and is a funny, watchable sit-com type of movie. Allison Janey was wonderful, as always, and Kristen Bell is as cute, funny and lovable as ever. A lot of cussing, but what movie doesn't have that nowdays.

Made me laugh out loud a few times, but basically a sweet/sarcastic wedding story all about a grown up blended family, warts and all. I enjoyed it, and would recommend it for a light, funny comedy with some really good actors. The scenery and clothes were fun to see, and the wedding dress was so unique and spectacular!!!!!!!!

Apt Title
SaidNDone21 November 2022
"The People We Hate" is an apt title because both the film and every character in it is abhorrent.

This sham of a 'movie' is essentially a 90 minute infomercial for Prime. Not because it tries to sell Amazon products (although it does contain a 3 minute Taco Bell commercial near the end), but because it is filler manufactured for people to "watch" while they play candy-crush on their phone, thereby inflating Prime's viewership stats. The 'plot' is convoluted non-sense, the characters are manikins, the situations/sets/costumes are not remotely plausible, and the dialogue seems to have been written by half-distracted teenage fanfic 'writers' from LA.

There is no artistic merit, no creativity, no humor, no attention to detail, no tension, no romance, no reason for this formula of a movie to exist outside of selling ad-space. I refuse to believe anyone involved in this project thought they were producing anything of value. It seems to me Amazon asked for the lowest cost marketable 90 minute filler and those involved used that as an excuse to pick up a no-effort paycheck.

Funny and cute
travis-english20 November 2022
Not sure what anyone was expecting from this.

I picked it out it at random, and cold watched it. I laughed. I smiled all the way through. It was endearing. Kristen Bell was fun as always. Allison Janney was also cute. I'm pretty sure I fell in love with Ben Platt (and I'm a straight guy). There's a lot of fun performances in there. The drop in by Lizy Chapman was probably my favorite.

Chill out, internet guys. It's a well written and well played good comedy. It is predictable? Sure. But, so what? Predictable is OK. It's done well. Great title, too, actually. Maybe I should check out the book.

Solid rom-com - better than most on straight to OTT
jedbow25 November 2022
Solid film with a great cast. Enjoyed the shots in London as well / always an enhancement to any film or TV series. How in the world will I ever get to the required character count for a review? Let me count the ways. This film is being shown on Amazon Prime - I find that most of their made for Amazon films are quite average (at best) - this one is one of the better films that was made for Amazon. Good production quality, high quality actors. The script was just OK but there was enough positive aspects to make me feel 'ok' when the film was over. This is unusual in watching direct to Amazon films - so well-done team Amazon Studios.

You can't convince me this is a real movie
cardsrock19 November 2022
This movie is one incoherent scene full of people who don't even remotely act like real people after another. Ben Platt and Kristen Bell are absolutely insufferable and made me actively angry. There's almost no explanation for how awful these characters are or why they hate their sister for no reason. This isn't an Always Sunny in Philadelphia situation where it's entertaining watching awful people do awful things, it's more so I want to rip my eyeballs out and extract the memory of this wretched pain from my brain. Also, this has some of the most egregiously disgusting product placement I've ever seen. It's like watching that fake Korean Subway tv show from John Oliver.

This was a truly horrible experience that I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. Please avoid this like the plague.

Woof, What a Heifer
drednm28 November 2022
100-minute stinker of a movie with hugely unlikable characters.

Annoying extended family of losers reunite in London for a pretentious wedding. That's about it.

Kristen Bell is way too old for playing the sap having an affair with her jerky boss. Then there's Ben Platt playing a gay dope who breaks up with this boyfriend at the wedding of the bi-racial sister.

Then there's Allison Janney as the ditz mother who seems to be having an affair with one of her ex-husbands. My guess is they're supposed to be screwball comedy tropes but they come off as annoying jerks.

One of the stupidest scenes has the bride and her screeching pals going for a ride in a hot tub on the Thames. Gee, I wonder if they'll fall into the river.

Really bad.

It's In the Title and I enjoyed it
Nikki-D324 April 2023
Does this family act anything like my own? No. Was I expecting a family I could relate to? No. You find or don't find that throughout a movie and either way is ok. Are there families out there that do behave this way? Absolutely and worse, but, that's also subjective to what you're used to. Unfortunately most of the reviews seem to be either internalized and/or sound projected from a space of wanting or expecting this to be a thorough family feel good movie and it's mostly specifically not that until the end. It's not meant to be that in a cut & dry way and that's right in the title. I just don't think anyone imagined that "The People we hate at the wedding" could be the family members gaining insight into themselves. I enjoyed the plot, the imperfections, the whit, the way they all gained something they were missing by finally being honest with themselves and each other. I liked the man Kristen Bell met on the plane. The "Discount Mark Zuckerberg" speech was a 10 as was his comment about life coming full circle. Overall, I enjoyed how the movie showed some of the worst personality traits people can have (Self-sabatoge, Self-doubt, Selfishness, Dishonesty, Projection, Internalization) and some of the best (Insight, honesty, forgiveness of yourself and others, having the strength to go against the grain you're used to in order to bring positive change into your life).

Cliched farce not for prudes, with enough laughs and pretty scenes
koen-564 July 2023
My wife and I watched this together on a rainy day and laughed a lot. It is somewhat stupid and over the top as a farce should be.

It will not be for people who don't like explicit swearing or sex in movies. Maybe they were all the 1 stars. Watching a drunken threesome was a little confronting for me and there were not many laughs in it, though it was I guess, trying to tell us something about the silly characters.

So... the actors do their job in a charming and/or offensive way and are good looking as well. The London setting and wealth of half the family add to the entertaining escape of this movie. Will it educate you on anything important or remain in your thoughts for days after viewing? I certainly reckon not.

So to sum up, it has vulgarity along with its cliches and lots of laughs.

Lovely locations, otherwise relentlessly insufferable
3lazycats26 November 2022
I'll start by saying something nice, it had high production value, and very lovely locations. It's a shame the plot, characters, dialog and other essential elements of a good movie were missing.

This is a poorly written, unfunny film. It was so awful I have to assume it was written by an AI, who took the elements of a funny movie but simply didn't understand how to write for a human audience. I've seen 3/10 star Hallmark movies with better developed plots and characters.

I genuinely like the actors in this film, but given the script there's no amount of talent that could have saved this movie.

I turned it off roughly 1 hour in, because I didn't care how it ended.

If you want a bit of raunchy fun watch this movie
pdavi7324 November 2022
I laughed more then I thought I would! Yes some scenes are far fetched but still funny. Cast was amazing lots of stars from previous shows. I hope none of us have to see these types of things in real life but it sure was funny to watch happen to someone else. I have already watched twice and laughed each time. If your on of those who go around correcting other ppls grammar or can't stand swear words this may not be for you! But if you need a few laughs give it a try orday to day gets too rough take a break and watch this. This movie is not for 1940s comedy crowd but if you like Amy Shumer comedy you will luv it.

You disliked the people before they got to the wedding
dedawson-8256120 November 2022
We started this movie at the suggestion of the NYT, but after about 25 minutes we looked at each other and said, "Haven't laughed yet." Kristen Bell is cute and Allison Janney has her comedy chops, but this mish-mash is so disjointed and so reliant on cheap sex situations that we gave up and turned on the news. None of the characters were sympathetic and the opening sequences were so truncated and unclear that we found ourselves wondering who was who and why they mattered. It's too bad. The premise seemed to have great possibilities. Maybe it gets better by the end but where we stopped it seemed pointless.

I Enjoyed Every Minute
ambermckeldin13 March 2023
I loved every moment of this movie. The complex relationships each family member had with one another, it felt so real. Add in the hilarious comedy bits and it was almost perfect. The way I would describe it would be a romantic comedy without the romance, but rather the love of a family. I feel like that is why I enjoyed it so much. It had the tone of a romantic comedy but the family dynamic was very original and fresh to me. Different from anything I had seen before.

It would be a great date night movie, or simply one to lift you spirits if you are having a bad day/week/month, really whenever you are feeling down.

I Hate All the People at This Wedding
hughman5526 November 2022
And the writers, and the director, and myself for watching this piece of crap all the way to the end. It is one of the stupidest movies I've seen in a while. Point of personal privilege here: I'm going to focus on the gay couple. Not because it's worse than the other storylines. They're all equally AWEFUL!!! It seems that a lot of gay storylines lately center around whether or not to turn your relationship into a three-way. Ok, I'm gay, in a relationship for a while, know lots of other gay people, single and coupled, and literally NOT ONCE has that topic ever surfaced personally or through any of our friends. Not once. And yet, if you go by the latest films released, with gay characters, you'd think that that is the driving tension for all of us... Also, anal sex has to figure in prominently in our every day discussions about anything. And last, and then I'm done with this drek, the writers think it's hilarious that the main female's "boyfriend's" last name is Bottoms. Get it, bottoms??? Like anal sex bottoms??? That is SOOOOOOOO funny.... One can only hope that this mess sinks to the bottom (hahahah) of the sea and disappears forever.

Over the top story lines that happen in real life.
dbuckshnis19 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
First off, I am a huge Allison Janney fan, as well as a Kirsten Bell fan, and the acting is very realistic and very entertaining. So I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. The individual arcs of each storyline is hilarious and expected - the ex parents get together, the jilted sister finds another and then is thrown back, and the threesome discussions. Of course - the wedding itself and all the acting makes for a good movie. Eloise was fabulous in her role -

The set designs are great and I really loved living in the 80s sequences as well as current day wedding. Who doesn't love England and all the pomp and stance with beautiful buildings and architecture.

Costumes were great!

Very entertaining!

Simple, silly, but totally watchable
mtruskovskaya25 March 2023
I honestly don't get all the negative reviews and all the moaning about this movie. It's just a very silly, simple comedy with 'traditional' bad jokes, but it has good enough premise and pretty views of the UK. It's not a masterpiece or anything that you should take seriously, but it's totally watchable. Allison Janney is great as usual - I've recently come across many of her movies and even a sitcom, and I always enjoy her acting. Some comments are whining that the characters are insufferable - but that's the whole point! How on earth is it so hard to understand?

People should really stop playing critics for a second and just relax sometimes. I watched it on a Saturday morning with a cup of coffee, and it was good enough :) Definitely not the worst movie you can find on Prime.

The People We Hate at the Wedding Is a Movie to Ignore in the Background
Okay, Streamers, we have a lot of family movies coming out around this time. Studios are putting out their Christmas fare early. There are those romantic comedies and so many other films that are supposed to appeal to broad audiences as the families get together for the holidays. Amazon released on Prime Video a family comedy based on a novel with the same name, The People We Hate at the Wedding. Here's how the wedding bells tolled.

I'm going to be honest, friends. I don't want to waste my time writing a review of The People We Hate at the Wedding. It is such a nothing movie that I don't even want to write the premise. Fine - Alice (Kristen Bell) and Paul (Ben Platt) travel to their estranged, half-sister, Eloise's (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) wedding in England. Alice and Paul are American and are struggling in their personal and professional lives while Eloise grew up in England and seemingly leads a posh and perfect existence. Alice, Paul and their mother, Donna (Allison Janney), who is also Eloise's mother, go to the wedding begrudgingly. Disastrous hijinks ensue.

Actually, that synopsis was too long for this bland, unfunny movie. Everything you think will happen from the set up happens. Sorry to spoil it for you, Streamers. The worst part of the movie is that even though it is predictable, it could at least be funny but it's NOT. I like Kristen Bell, Ben Platt and Allison Janney. None of them can save this movie. Allison Janney does the best of those three, but she really doesn't have much to do either. The title of the movie gives you a clue that you will dislike these people, but there's really no redeeming value in them anyway. So, what's the point.

Ultimately, The People We Hate at the Wedding is not a good movie. It is pretty boring and definitely not funny. You could have this playing in the background during Thanksgiving dinner because you don't have to pay attention to it to know exactly what's going on and what's going to happen. Yep, this is definitely only a one popped kernel, but only because I can't say it's awful.

Hilarious from the start
uncsbuddy912 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This movie had me laughing the whole way through. Did I want to slap or wring the necks of some of the characters? Absolutely- Kristin's character was a pathetic moron for her relationship and Ben's character's boyfriend was despicable. But the dysfunction was perfectly comedic with witty lines and decent redemption arcs complete with tellings-off that made me snicker and cheer. I knew I would enjoy this movie because of the all-star cast, but it truly had me cackling a few times. Some people called it too crass, but what do you expect when every member of the family is so dysfunctional? I will probably watch this again, even if just to show it to someone else.
