Critics’ Conversation: On That ‘White Lotus’ Bromance and TV’s Incest Obsession
Image
Daniel Fienberg: The past month has left little doubt that Mike White has that special sauce when it comes to giving TV audiences a show capable of providing and sustaining discourse. But I find it fascinating to see what people talk about when they talk about The White Lotus.

As always, there’s been chatter about the identity of the season’s inevitable casualty and the circumstances behind their death, which has never been a level on which White Lotus interested me. (I reserve the right to change my mind, of course, if the killer turns out to be a monkey.)

Then there have been fixations on North Carolina accents — who knew there was a suburban Durham accent that was different from the urban Durham accent — and Aimee Lou Wood’s teeth, proving that the White Lotus audience isn’t made up of Sex Education fans, or Oscar completists who sought out Living,...

Black Bag Review
Image
Steven Soderbergh’s Black Bag isn’t just a spy thriller—it’s a masterclass in sleek, sexy, and intelligent filmmaking. With razor-sharp dialogue, visually stunning compositions, and a cast delivering powerhouse performances, Soderbergh crafts a polished and playfully intricate espionage thriller.

The story follows George Woodhouse (Michael Fassbender), a British intelligence officer tasked with identifying a mole within his own ranks. His investigation takes a particularly personal turn when one of the prime suspects happens to be his own wife, Kathryn (a brunette Cate Blanchett is her most femme fatale role yet). What unfolds is a sophisticated game of deception, where truth is a luxury and betrayal lurks in every whispered conversation.

Soderbergh keeps the pacing tight as he blends classic spy intrigue with moments of biting wit. This isn’t your standard action-packed espionage flick—it’s a chess match played with cocktails in hand, where every glance and double entendre carries weight,...

'The White Lotus' Fans Need to Stream Aimee Lou Wood's Dark Netflix Drama
Image
The charismatic and endearing Aimee Lou Wood is steadily proving herself to be one of Hollywood's most dynamic performers, with the talented actress having first skyrocketed to stardom when she headlined the fan-favorite British teen dramedy Sex Education. Wood has been able to continue showcasing her impressive acting prowess in fellow shows like Alice & Jack and Daddy Issues and movies such as The Electrical Life of Louis Wain, Living, and Seize Them!, and in January 2024 it was announced that she would be joining the star-studded third season of the HBO knockout anthology series The White Lotus.

The delightfully juicy satirical dramedy has further propelled Wood to prominence, as audiences have quickly fallen in love with her bubbly and vivacious character Chelsea, who arrives at the titular Thailand resort with her brooding older boyfriend Rick (Walton Goggins). 2025 has already proven to be a successful year for the actress, as she...

Before ‘The White Lotus,’ Aimee Lou Wood Collided With Bill Nighy an Oscar-Nominated Akira Kurosawa Remake That Will Shake You
Image
While remakes will always be forced to justify their existence if the original film that they are inspired by is already well-received, that pressure can be even more heightened when it is considered to be an all-time great classic.Akira Kurosawais often considered to be one of the greatest filmmakers of all time, and Ikiru is definitely his most personal film; although Kurosawa was best known for his epic Samurai films, Ikiru was a deeply personal drama about one man coping with the inevitability of death. Even though Ikiru is just as powerful today as it was during its initial release, Oliver Hermanus’ powerful remake Livingperfectly added new context to the story by setting it in England during the 1950s. Although it is best known for earning Bill Nighy the first Academy Award nomination of his entire career, Living features a memorable, inspiring performance from Aimee Lou Wood.

Maine Stay: Mubi Falls For Oliver Hermanus’ “The History of Sound”
Image
The History of Sound, the highly anticipated feature love story featuring Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor has found a home. Oliver Hermanus who directed the historical romantic drama (adapted by Ben Shattuck from his Pushcart Prize-winning short story of the same name) in early 2024 had probably pictured-locked this sixth feature film before showcasing to it buyers and it is the Mubi folks who are making another big bet acquiring North American rights to the film. While a Cannes Film Festival selection is entirely possible (Hermanus premiered his sophomore feature Beauty in 2011 in the Un Certain Regard section) it feels like Venice and Toronto are a more probable festival strategy route as the filmmaker’s last film Living began its fest life at Sundance to then have a rare showcase in Lido that same year.…...

Paul Mescal, Josh O’Connor Gay Romance ‘History of Sound’ Bought by Mubi for North America as Focus Takes International (Exclusive)
Image
“The Substance” and “Queer” distributor Mubi is continuing its acquisition streak, picking up “The History of Sound,” the anticipated gay romance drama starring Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor, for North America. Focus Features and Universal Pictures International, meanwhile, have acquired international rights for the film.

Directed by Oliver Hermanus, the feature finished production earlier this year. Mubi says it’s planning a theatrical release for 2025, following a world premiere to be announced in the coming months.

Announced back in 2021, “The History of Sound” became the first project Mescal shot after his starring role in “Gladiator II” and follows two young men, Lionel (Mescal) and David (O’Connor), in the shadows of WWI who are determined to record the lives, voices and music of Americans. As they begin to log the events, the two fall in love.

The film was penned by Ben Shattuck, adapted from his own award-winning short story.

Bill Nighy In Talks To Star In BBC Series ‘Clifftops’ From ‘The English’ Writer Hugo Blick
Image
Exclusive: Bill Nighy is in talks to star in Clifftops, a Hugo Blick series for the BBC set in a nostalgia-soaked 1970s trailer park overlooking the English Channel.

Deadline hears that The English writer has teamed with Drama Republic, the producer behind Netflix’s One Day, to create the six-part series, which sources said has the wit of The Royle Family and the emotional clout of The Grapes of Wrath.

Clifftops centers on a mother and daughter who escape an abusive husband to set up a home away from civilization. On the clifftops, Lela is reunited with her Bradford-born parents in a community of outcasts, set to the soundtrack and TV culture of its day.

The BBC declined to comment on the series. Nighy’s agent at Independent Talent has been contacted for comment. Blick is also repped by Independent Talent.

Sundance 2025: 11 New Films with the Best Shot at an Oscar Run
Image
The Sundance Film Festival reliably delivers Oscar contenders every year, whether they be usually one or two standout narrative features or the lion’s share of Best Documentary Feature nominees.

2025 should be no exception.

But don’t look to all the Sundance 2025 award winners as likely Oscar contenders. Most films with Sundance jury awards, while worthy, are ultimately too small-scale to wind up in Oscar contention. Expect narrative winner “Atropia” and critical favorite “Rebuilding” to land at the Gothams or Indie Spirits. But the international award winners, for example, get a leg up on tipping their countries to submit them for International Feature Film consideration.

The lucky movies at Sundance that can fit into the right Oscar box find distributors, hire award campaigners, and wind up shortlisted or even nominated by the new year. Here is our list of potential Sundance entries, narrative and documentary, ranked by how likely they...

I Admit It: Venom's Family Tree Is One of Marvel's Most Confusing
Image
Very few Marvel characters have as complicated a web of family as the Venom symbiote does. As rapidly as the Klyntar can spawn children, and as frequently as Venom’s DNA is used to craft new monsters, the symbiote’s family has grown considerably since its debut. Fortunately, while expansive, its family’s complex weave of codices, cloning, and asexual spawning isn’t impossible to pick apart.

Symbiotes can naturally produce approximately seven times through “seeds.” The Klyntar spread their seeds after a relatively quick maturation cycle, but this is often done unintentionally. The symbiotes don’t often raise their offspring as humans would, most likely due to the species’ connection through the Symbiote Hive-Mind. Venom has been the subject of frequent experiments, leading to additional vaguely distinct spawns called “off-shoots.” To complicate matters further, symbiotes swap portions of their genetics with their hosts’, technically making each of Venom’s hosts his “family” as well.

‘Anora,’ ‘A Real Pain,’ ‘A Complete Unknown,’ ‘Wicked’ Receive Writers Guild Award Nominations
Image
“Anora,” “A Real Pain,” “A Complete Unknown,” “Wicked” and “Nickel Boys” are among the films that have been nominated by the Writers Guild of America in the feature film category, the WGA West and WGA East announced on Wednesday.

In the Original Screenplay category, “Anora” and “A Real Pain” were nominated alongside “Challengers,” “Civil War” and “My Old Ass.” In Adapted Screenplay, “A Complete Unknown,” “Nickel Boys” and “Wicked” will be up against “Dune: Part Two” and “Hit Man.”

Eligibility for the Writers Guild Awards is restricted to screenplays that were written under the guild’s Minimum Basic Agreement or under related agreements from affiliated international guilds. That rule made many of the year’s likeliest Oscar nominees ineligible for Writers Guild nominations, including the original scripts “The Brutalist,” “The Substance,” “Hard Truths,” “September 5” and “All We Imagine as Light,” as well as the adaptations “Conclave,” “Sing Sing,”“Emilia Pérez” and “I’m Still Here.

St. Denis Medical Becomes NBC’s First Scripted Renewal for 2025-26
Image
St. Denis Medical broke through in a big way when it debuted on NBC in the fall, and the network issued some exciting news on Tuesday morning:

St. Denis Medical Season 2 is a go.

The mockumentary is NBC’s first scripted renewal for the 2025-26 TV season. Make of that what you will.

(NBC)

The freshman drama averages just under 4 million viewers and has a 0.5 rating in the demo, proving that the broadcast networks still have some life left.

NBC teases that the series has reached 21.4 million viewers to date, which is astounding, but it doesn’t hold much water when the network doesn’t break it down.

The Live + 7 numbers are enough to keep it on the air for several years.

St. Denis Medical Is A Big Hit (NBC)

St. Denis Medical is set in an underfunded, understaffed Oregon hospital and focuses on its staff, who do the best...

'Toxic Town' Reveals First Look at 'Black Mirror' Team's New Netflix Series
Image
The production team behind Netflix’s Black Mirror has a new series, Toxic Town, set to arrive on the streaming platform sometime this year. Netflix has released the first image (above) for the four-part limited series starring Jodie Whittaker and Robert Carlyle, which traces the true story of the Corby toxic waste case from the UK.

A town in Northamptonshire, Corby was once home to steel works which were shuttered in 1981. However, the toxic waste left behind contaminated the area, leading to health issues for those who lived there. An investigation and subsequent case found that the Corby Borough Council’s actions in moving the waste led to birth defects, namely, an above-average number of Corby residents born with upper-limb defects. Netflix's series will center primarily on the mothers whose children were affected. Per the official synopsis for Toxic Town:

Based on one of the UK’s biggest environmental scandals,...

Why Netflix May Be Looking For An Out From Their Contract With Prince Harry and Meghan Markle
Image
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s new ‘Polo’ Netflix series has failed to thrill both audiences and critics. The reception has been so poor that sources are claiming Netflix is more than underwhelmed, especially since the show was to be to Polo what ‘Living Golf’ was to the game of Golf.

Sadly, critics have all but trashed the series and there’s very little excitement from the side of fans.

Even though there’s still Meghan’s cooking show to test the waters, many believe this may be the final nail in the coffin when it comes to Harry and Meghan retaining that lucrative contract they signed with Netflix.

Prince Harry’s ‘Polo’ Docuseries Could Tank Like His Previous Project

With the very poor reception ‘Polo’ is receiving, Harry notches his second underperforming project with Netflix, following his documentary on the Invictus Games.

“The new polo documentary hasn’t received good reviews,...

'In the Vein of Indiana Jones': Guy Ritchie Describes New Movie Starring John Krasinski & Natalie Portman
Image
Guy Ritchie discusses his upcoming film for Apple TV+ Fountain of Youth alongside the film's stars John Krasinski and Natalie Portman.

Guy Ritchie is known for his comedic gangster films, such as Snatch and Revolver, as well as handling big IPs such as two adaptations of Sherlock Holmes and Disney's remake of Aladdin. However, Ritchie wanted to do something a bit different for his next film. "I found myself feeling like if I wasn't too careful, I was ending up in a comedy-action-gangster genre, of which, of course, I'm comfortable and enjoy, but at some point, I thought, you have to spread your wings as a writer-director," Ritchie told Entertainment Weekly. That's where Fountain of Youth comes in. Ritchie directed the film for Apple TV. It tells the story of two estranged siblings, played by John Krasinski and Natalie Portman, who reunite in search of the mythical spring.
