Here is a really great site that talks about why this movie is so great. My daughter loves it too.
"The Emperor's Newest Clothes illustrates some complex issues in kid-friendly ways, from the petulant ruler's gigantic ego to the dangers of mob mentality. Thomasina's innocence emphasizes the value of recognizing the truth and speaking honestly, even when it means you're the lone voice of reason and others pressure you to change. The emperor's dogged refusal to admit when he's wrong makes him even more obnoxious by the story's end and reaffirms that looking only inward gets you nowhere. This playful take on a classic is a fun and worthwhile pick for families."
I think it totally failed, as it's so unbelievable. Wasn't the premise of H.C. Andersen's original that only (supposedly) super-sophisticated people could actually see the new, super-sophisticated clothes, therefore nobody - including the emperor - wanted to admit that they couldn't see the clothing? How hard would it have been to have incorporated that into this story and to have made it believable?
I don't understand how that could have been missed. I really don't. I would love to hear anyone's interpretation as to why I am wrong, because I am simply left dumbfounded after watching the movie.
