Many people have dreams of being an actor, sometimes in film and sometimes in television roles.
Some actors fall into the opportunity through lots of auditions, training, and from knowing the right people. But others get their start by becoming a famous name first.
Athletes are often in the public eye, gaining a following for being good at their chosen sport. Once they retire from their profession, some continue to grow their popularity through other ventures.
Many athletes turn to acting, whether through television advertisements and commercials like Coach Prime, Patrick Mahomes, Tom Brady, Derek Jeter, Eli Manning, and Kevin Durant.
Other athletes like Travis Kelce, Pat McAfee, Deion Sanders (Prime), and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. do podcasts to attract a following.

After debuting early last weekend, Universal’s The Fall Guy expanded to 78 overseas markets during its sophomore session, adding $25.4M for a running total of $36.9M at the international box office. That’s in line with Bullet Train and above The Lost City at the same point in release. Globally, the David Leitch-directed action romance is at $65.4M.
This is a fun picture with positive scores and exits so there’s hope for some legs here and playability throughout upcoming holidays. Still, an expensive movie, it came in slightly below projections domestically.
Internationally, the UK was a No. 1 debut with a strong $4.4M from 1,400 screens. Odeon was the top-performing circuit, and Everyman registered a 9% share, 3.1 points higher than their average for the year. Performance across 51 IMAX screens made up 7.6% of the total. The weekend result is well above Bullet Train and The Lost City. Monday is a holiday.
Mexico opened to $2.5M at No.

Sony’s animated “The Garfield Movie” scratched up $22 million in its international box office debut. It’s currently only playing in 18 markets, roughly 35% of its eventual overseas footprint, so those ticket sales represent a promising start for the family film.
“The Garfield Movie” doesn’t open in the U.S. and Canada until Memorial Day weekend on May 24. When it does land in domestic theaters, it’s projected to earn $35 million over the long weekend and will compete for first place with director George Miller’s “Mad Max” prequel “Furiosa.”
Overseas, “The Garfield Movie” enjoyed the biggest start in Spain with $3.2 million over five days, followed by Brazil with $2.2 million, Italy with $1.6 million and Peru with $1.3 million. According to the studio, revenues for the film are pacing 76% above fellow kid-friendly film “DC League of Super Pets” (which eventually earned $113 million internationally) and 41% higher than “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish...

Spoiler Alert: This story discusses plot elements from “Captain America: Brave New World,” which is scheduled to open in theaters on Feb. 14, 2025.
As the preceding warning suggests, it is customary for any story that reveals significant plot elements of an upcoming movie to include a spoiler alert. But what about a toy line?
On April 17, a Brazilian Instagram account dedicated to toy collections from fast food chains posted a video showcasing McDonald’s newest Mappy Meal toy line of mini plush characters from Marvel Studios’ “Captain America: Brave New World.” It didn’t take very long for fans online to notice one of these toys was the Red Hulk, the rage monster alter ego of Thaddeus Ross, played in “Brave New World” by Harrison Ford.

“Sonic the Hedgehog” just got a whole lot darker. Keanu Reeves has been cast as the voice of Shadow, the evil, lab-generated black hedgehog foil to Sonic, in Paramount’s upcoming “Sonic the Hedgehog 3,” IndieWire has learned. Paramount had no comment.
Reeves joins a voice cast that includes Ben Schwartz as Sonic, Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Tails, and Idris Elba as Knuckles, who debuted in “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” and is getting his own spinoff series on Paramount+ later this year. James Marsden and Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik are also returning to the cast of the live-action film. Jeff Fowler, who directed the first two entries, is returning for the three-quel.

Keanu Reeves will play Shadow the Hedgehog in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, according to The Hollywood Reporter. By voicing Sonic’s black-furred counterpart, the John Wick star joins an already star-studded cast comprised of Ben Schwartz, James Marsden, Idris Elba, and Jim Carrey.
The news follows Paramount showcasing snippets of the upcoming film (due out in theaters December 20th) at a CinemaCon last week. Reportedly, the teaser featured a depressed Dr. Robotnik (Carrey) looking to gain back his spark by creating Shadow, a darker foil of his greatest nemesis, Sonic.
Sega has also fittingly declared 2024 to be the “Year of Shadow,” celebrating the movie and the Sonic X Shadow Generations video game with lego sets, motorcycles, and general fanfare.
The first two films in the franchise garnered a mixed critical reception, though performed quite well at the box office. Pulling in over $700 million combined, Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic 2...

Get ready to meet the ultimate life form, because we now know who will be voicing Shadow the Hedgehog in the upcoming "Sonic the Hedgehog 3," and it's none other than Keanu Reeves.
The Hollywood Reporter has the scoop, with multiple sources confirming that Reeves will return to voice acting after playing Batman in "DC League of Super-Pets." The news comes after Paramount Picture's big presentation at CinemaCon last week where they debuted footage from the upcoming "Sonic 3." Our own Ryan Scott was on-site to witness the footage, which included the reveal Jim Carrey's Dr. Robotnik is now depressed and out of shape, looking just like his nickname — Eggman. Then he gets a surprise alert that "they found it," referring to Shadow the Hedgehog.
Shadow first appeared in 2001's "Sonic Adventure 2," and has since become one of the most popular characters in the franchise — an edgy antihero and the coolest hedgehog around.

Who is up for a massive DC movie binge? If you’re in the United States and have a Netflix subscription, you can do that right now through to at least April next year with the majority of titles from the Dceu and other DC movies dropping between December and January 2024. Here’s your updated guide to watching the movies in order.
We will cover three ways to watch the DC movies that have landed on Netflix.
Firstly, we’ll cover the simple release order. You’d have watched these movies in this order if you went to the theater each time a new DC movie dropped. Following that, we’ll look at the canon order of the Dceu, i.e., if you want to follow the timeline’s events closely. This will exclude any title that exists outside the Dceu. Finally, you’ll get the Kasey list.

The age of streaming is going through a very strange time. Not only has the promise of streaming titles being available forever turned out to be a bald-faced lie, but exclusivity seems to no longer be the goal or even a priority now for most platforms. More and more streamers are looking at other avenues for extra sources of income, whether they be other, competitor streamers or even traditional methods thought to be "a thing of the past" — like Disney airing "The Mandalorian" on regular broadcast TV.
As Warner Bros. Discovery struggles to find new ways to confound the public, their latest move is to share the DC Extended Universe movies with other streamers, even the biggest threat to the success of the Max streaming platform. Next year, many DC movies will make their way to Tubi, but if you don't want to wait you can catch a bunch of them on Netflix right now.

Exclusive: It’s not just Netflix that made a bid for Warner Bros.’ scrapped Coyote vs. Acme. Paramount, Apple and Amazon have seen the movie as well. Of those, Paramount has made a bid, and the plus there is a potential theatrical release. The Melrose lot could use it on the 2024 release calendar. Debt-laden exhibitors would want it, too.
Meanwhile, Amazon is mulling, I’m told, with no formal bid made. First, it takes longer over there to conduct business and get decisions through the proper channels. I also hear that marketing execs are trying to get their heads around the picture (seriously — there’s a lot of action scenes in the movie and hysterical jokes that easily could be used in trailers. I’ve seen the movie. Look out for the Porky Pig pant-less joke).
Warners is playing hardball as it wants to cover the $70M and then some.

A year of box office woes for Warner Bros. has given way to a month of spectacular success with “Barbie,” which has grossed $1.18 billion and counting. But now the studio is releasing “Blue Beetle,” another title from Hollywood’s most struggling franchise, DC.
It was only two months ago that “The Flash” entered theaters with the full confidence of Warner Bros. and high praise from new DC Studios chief James Gunn, only to go bust with just $268.4 million grossed worldwide. Dwayne Johnson is returning to the “Fast and Furious” universe with a new standalone film, reprising his franchise role as Luke Hobbs.
Universal Pictures announced the project on Thursday. Longtime “Fast and Furious” collaborator Chris Morgan wrote the untitled film’s script. Plot details were not available, though individuals familiar with the deal said the new movie will bridge between the events of the just-released “Fast X” and the upcoming “Fast X: Part II,” which is expected in 2025. Johnson just appeared as Hobbs, a diplomatic security service agent, in a credits scene for “Fast X.”
Johnson will produce the film with Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia for their Seven Bucks Productions, along with Vin Diesel and Samantha Vincent via their One Race Films. Additional producers include Chris Morgan for his Chris Morgan Productions, Jeff Kirschenbaum for Roth/Kirschenbaum Films and Neal Moritz for Original Film.

Goodbye HBO Max, hello Max. Warner Bros. Discovery announced several weeks back that the company was dropping the "HBO" from the name of its flagship streaming service, and that day has come. What does that mean for you, the subscriber? For one, it means a lot more movies and TV shows will be streaming in 4K, and the list of initial titles is pretty impressive. There are, however, a few caveats.
Those who wish to watch movies like "2001: A Space Odyssey" and "Argo" in Ultra HD will need to be subscribed to the new tier offered by Max called "Ultimate Ad-Free." This goes for $19.99 per month and includes access to the service's library of 4K movies and TV shows. There is also a plan with ads for $9.99 per month and a regular ad-free plan for $15.99 per month. Sudheer Sirivara, Global Technology Platform for Warner Bros. Discovery, had this to...

With HBO Max turning into Max, Warner Bros. Discovery is introducing a higher-priced plan — $19.99 per month — with an expanded bouquet of 4K Ultra HD content aimed at pushing customers to the pricier package.
On Monday, the company announced that the 4K tier will feature more than 1,000 films and episodes in 4K Uhd, an increase of nearly eightfold over what has been available in HBO Max.
The 4K Uhd content on Max will include “Game of Thrones,” “The House of the Dragon,” “The Last of Us,” the Harry Potter films, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Dark Knight trilogy, the Matrix films and more. Additionally, all Warner Bros. movies released this year and going forward will be available in 4K Uhd when they arrive on Max following their theatrical windows.

This post contains major spoilers for "Fast X."
Come what may in the future, the main series of "Fast & Furious" is coming to an end, with "Fast X" now in theaters. It's been billed from the start as a two-part finale to the Fast Saga, with "Fast & Furious 11" teed up by the film's cliffhanger ending. As for what's to come in the presumed finale (assuming it doesn't actually become a trilogy)? That remains uncertain, but for those who have seen the movie, we know a couple of things for sure. 1) Dom and the gang have unfinished business with Jason Momoa's Dante. 2) The Rock is returning as Luke Hobbs to finish his business with the franchise's new big baddie.
In a mid-credits scene attached to "Fast X," we see a masked man wandering some sort of warehouse set up by Dante — the son of Herman Reyes, the main villain...

If you didn’t get enough Krypto in DC League of Super-Pets, hold onto your leash because James Gunn is bringing the Man of Steel’s loyal pooch back for Superman: Legacy. During an interview with the Toronto Sun, longtime collaborators James Gunn and Chris Pratt spoke about their new film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. While discussing the latest exploits of Star-Lord and his merry band of a-holes, Gunn teased that Krypto would appear in his upcoming Superman film, Superman: Legacy.
While discussing other ways the dynamic duo could work together, Gunn joked that Pratt could play Krypto in Superman: Legacy. “I was hoping I could cast you as Krypto… the Superdog,” Gunn told Pratt. “But you’d have to be like Maria, and you’d have to do motion capture on set, and walk around on your hands and knees.” Pratt, always ready to lean into a bit,...

Netflix’s animated output is certainly having a moment, between the Best Animated Feature win for Guillermo del Toro’s “Pinocchio” and the acquisition of Animal Logic, the Australian animation studio that had previously been responsible for “Happy Feet,” “The Lego Movie” and “DC League of Super-Pets” (among many others). The streamer has just unveiled its 2023-2024 slate, revealing new details about upcoming projects like “Nimona” and announcing new movies like “Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie,” a brand-new “SpongeBob SquarePants” film.

For better or worse, the next big bet in Hollywood right now is video games. "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" is the biggest film of 2023 so far. "The Last of Us" earned strong reviews from television critics, although some game critics were more skeptical. Even the anime series "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners" -- a spin-off of "Cyberpunk 2077" -- sniped anime of the year at the Crunchyroll Anime Awards.
Leading the charge was 2020's "Sonic the Hedgehog," which survived terrible initial press to score the best opening weekend box office ever for a video game film at the time of its release. A committed performance by Jim Carrey helped, as did a Sonic redesign led by Tyson Hesse and a hard-working team of visual effects artists. Its sequel, "Sonic the Hedgehog 2," made even more money.
Next up we've "Knuckles," a Paramount+ television series featuring everybody's favorite grumpy echidna voiced by Idris Elba.

Marc Maron has joined the cast of Universal’s untitled New York Christmas movie, written by Richard Curtis, the Oscar-nominated screenwriter of “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” “Notting Hill” and “Love Actually.”
Maron is starring alongside Melissa McCarthy and Paapa Essiedu in the film, a fairy-tale comedy about a workaholic man who enlists the help of a magical genie to help win his family back before Christmas.
Sam Boyd, who wrote and created the Anna Kendrick-led HBO Max series “Love Life,” will direct. It’s set to premiere on the NBCUniversal-owned streaming service Peacock on a yet-to-be-determined date.
Maron hosts the popular podcast “Wtf With Marc Maron” and recently debuted his first HBO stand-up special “From Bleak to Dark.” His other comedy specials include 2013’s “Thinky Pain,” 2015’s “More Later,” 2017’s “Too Real” and 2020’s “End Times Fun” on Netflix. The DC Universe is in a period of flux right now. This year, Warner Bros. is releasing the final films produced under the old regime, including "The Flash" and "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom." Meanwhile, the new regime at DC Studios, headed up by James Gunn and Peter Safran, are gearing up for a full-blown reboot (even if they don't want to call it a reboot), which kicks off in 2025 with Gunn's "Superman: Legacy." Caught somewhere in the middle? "Blue Beetle."
Recently, the first trailer for the long-awaited "Blue Beetle" film surfaced online. Save for a line about Batman, it was pretty much allowed to exist on its own terms, with "Cobra Kai" star Xolo Maridueña bringing Jaime Reyes to life in live-action for the first time. The film is clearly positioned as an origin story, and very much looks like it's going to be divorced from the larger DC Universe.

UK and Ireland cinema admissions were up 60% to 128 million in 2022.

Lena Headey is headed to Netflix.
The Game of Thrones and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles alum will headline Kurt Sutter's action drama series The Abandons.
"As a group of diverse, outlier families pursue their Manifest Destiny in 1850s Oregon, a corrupt force of wealth and power, coveting their land, tries to force them out," the logline reads.
"These abandoned souls, the kind of lost souls living on the fringe of society, unite their tribes to form a family and fight back."
"In this bloody process, 'justice' is stretched beyond the boundaries of the law."
"The Abandons will explore that fine line between survival and law, the consequences of violence, and the corrosive power of secrets, as this family fights to keep their land."
Headey will play Fiona, "a strong, devout matriarch who, unable to have her own children, took in four orphans to create her own family," according to Deadline.

Most sequels have a tough enough job just living up to their first movie, and this one would have had a big enough job just being a sequel to the original Shazam! What director David F. Sandberg’s first movie had was the novelty of the story of a boy having the power to just speak a magic word and finding himself in his now adult “ultimate form”, plus the power of being nearly Superman’s equal (some would argue even more), a fun novelty super hero movie. The story also had the subplot of young Billy Batson’s quest to find his mother after having been in foster homes his whole life, only to realize that the foster home he is in has provided him with the family he really needed by the end of the movie. In the end, he creates the Shazam family,...

Exclusive: John Whittington has signed with Grandview.
Whittington co-wrote the mega-hit Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for Paramount with Jim Carrey starring and Original Film producing. The film broke the opening weekend record for video game adaptations set by its 2020 predecessor, earning 26.5 million on opening day.
Most recently, John co-wrote DC League of Super-Pets for Warner Animation Group, which debuted #1 at the box office over its opening week July 29th. He also wrote True Fan, which topped the Black List in 2015, based on the true story of baseball fan Steve Bartman who, after interfering with a foul ball during a playoff game, was tortured and stalked by die hard Chicago Cub fans for potentially costing them their first National League pennant since 1945. He also a key architect to the Lego movie universe, having co-wrote The Lego Ninjago Movie and The Lego Batman Movie, the latter of which grossed over $311M worldwide.

Three of the five Oscar nominees for Best Sound won at the Golden Reel Awards bestowed by the Motion Picture Sound Editors (Mpse) on February 26 . The Oscar frontrunner, “Top Gun: Maverick,” picked up the prize for sound effects and foley while “Elvis” danced off with the music award and “All Quiet on the Western Front” claimed the foreign language trophy.
The other two Oscar nominees — “Avatar: The Way of Water” and “The Batman”– contended in sound effects and foley and the latter also vyed in dialogue/Adr. That latter award went to “The Banshees of Inisherin,” which was snubbed by the sound branch of the academy.
The upcoming Oscars mark the third year for the new Best Sound category, which combines Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing. There can be up to six nominees from a film: one production sound mixer, two supervising sound editors and three re-recording mixers.

Well, perhaps there is justice after all for Viola Davis, Kelly Reilly, Paul Dano, Keke Palmer and Oscar luncheon magnet Tom Cruise, all Emmy and Oscar un-nominated for their work over the past year but represented in the Critics Choice Super Award nominations, honoring horror, superhero, science fiction and action movies and television series.

Warner Animation Group, the Warner Bros. animation unit responsible for feature-length animation, is getting some new leadership. Bill Damaschke, an animation veteran who started his career as a production assistant on Disney’s “Pocahontas” and eventually became COO of DreamWorks Animation, is in final negotiations to become head of Warner Animation Group, TheWrap has confirmed.
Executive VP Allison Abbate was the last person to lead the unit; she departed in summer 2022 after the merger with Discovery. The fallout of the new leadership included the cancellation of the mostly finished “Scoob: Haunted Holiday,” a follow-up to the 2020 animated feature “Scoob,” as a cost-cutting measure (done at the same time as the shelving of “Batgirl”).
At Warner Bros. Discovery, Damaschke will report to Warner Bros Film Group co-chairpersons and CEOs Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy. It hasn’t been announced what Damaschke’s title will be.
