Oscar-winning documentary “No Other Land” has been made newly available for digital rent in North America in an effort to fundraise for Masafer Yatta communities.
The three-week fundraiser, which starts Friday and lasts through May 9, allows individuals and organizations to rent the film and hold their own screenings. Proceeds will go to the Masafer Yatta communities that are depicted in the film.
“We decided to independently make our film accessible online in the U.S. because, despite winning the Oscar, our community is still being destroyed and we urgently need help. All the money we get from this fundraiser will go directly to the community, physical and psychological support to help families recover after settler attacks, a local sheep fodder factory to create employment, and English classes so the younger generation has more tools to tell our stories,” Basel Adra, one of the filmmakers, who worked alongside Hamdan Ballal, Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor,...

Ron Perlman would have us believe that war never changes, but the movies about it certainly have. The last 20 years have brought no shortage of films about the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan (for obvious reasons), but the best war movies of the 21st century show that World War II continues to fascinate filmmakers most of all.
While those conflicts have dominated the genre lately, everything from the Civil War to the Battle of Red Cliffs has found powerful expression onscreen. Kathryn Bigelow’s “The Hurt Locker” tells us that “war is a drug,” and the films below suggest that movies about war are just as addictive — maybe even more so. We hope this list provides your fix.
With contributions from Anne Thompson and Michael Nordine.

Quick ViewRelease date and structure of the quartet of filmsCasting of The Beatles biopicWhat would be the storyline of The Beatles biopic?
The Beatles, one of the most iconic bands of all time, is set to receive a cinematic tribute. Director Sam Mendes has announced that this groundbreaking project will be quite different from a conventional biopic.
Instead of a single film, four separate biopics—each focusing on a different member of the Fab Four—will come together as a four-film cinematic event. Mendes believes this will be the “first bingeable theatrical experience.”

"Each man has his own story, but together they are legendary." No, that's not the logline for the next Marvel movie, but for the four Beatles films set to be directed by Sam Mendes. It's best to clear your schedule, though, as they're all set to be released in April 2028. You read that right — four films in one month focusing on one of the most important bands in music history. If we could needle-drop "Help!" here, we absolutely would.
The frankly wild decision to make four fab films about each individual member of the Beatles was confirmed at CinemaCon, after reports last year that Mendes was giving The Beatles their own "Avengers" movies. The reveal also finally confirmed who was playing the titular band. Paul Mescal is down for Paul McCartney, Barry Keoghan is Ringo Starr, Joseph Quinn is playing George Harrison, and Harris Dickinson is John Lennon, if you can imagine that.

If you loved the intense, immersive experience of Netflix’s Adolescence, where the camera follows the characters without cutting away, you’re in for a treat. Some filmmakers have taken on the daunting challenge of crafting an entire movie in a single, unbroken shot, creating a unique sense of intimacy and urgency. Achieving a one-shot film is no small feat—it demands meticulous planning, exhaustive rehearsals, and absolute coordination between the cast and crew. Directors and cinematographers often spend months strategizing every movement, ensuring that the choreography of the camera, actors, and environment flows seamlessly. When done right, this technique blurs the line between fiction and reality, pulling viewers deeper into the narrative and making every second count. Here are some of the most impressive one-shot movies that push the boundaries of filmmaking.

It’s already being called one of the year’s best television episodes, but for The Studio co-creator, director, writer, and star Seth Rogen, its production was the most stressful.
The Apple TV+ comedy series premiered this week with two episodes: its tone-setting pilot episode, “The Promotion,” where Rogen’s Matt Remick is promoted into the top job at fledgling Continental Studios, and “The Oner,” an aptly named episode that unfolds in what appears to be one continuous take as Remick visits the set of Sarah Polley’s movie where she tries to execute a oner herself.
“It was really hard,” Rogen said at an FYC event Friday night at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, on a panel along with his costars, including Ike Barinholtz, Kathryn Hahn, Chase Sui Wonders, Bryan Cranston, Dewayne Perkins, and Keyla Monterroso Mejia.

While period dramas are a surefire way to attract a crowd, war films remain some of the most enthralling and spectacular encapsulations of bygone eras. They’re emotionally compelling snapshots of past generations’ struggles. More often than not, they also double as satisfying answers to humanity’s most morbid questions. There’s nothing new about the genre, either. They’ve existed since the invention of film. George Méliès, one of the most prolific early filmmakers, created plenty of prototype wartime docudramas. Though remarkably rudimentary by modern standards, his short works — with such descriptive titles as French Officers’ Meeting and A Naval Review at Cherbourg — represent some of humanity’s oldest war movies.
Of course, modern genre works are more complex. Films like Napoleon and 1917 are high-budget spectacles of cinematic magic. These immersive experiences are perfectly capable of dragging audiences through the mud, grime, and horror of war. However, they’re far from exclusive.

Adolescence, Netflix’s gripping four-part drama, is not just another crime thriller—it’s a cinematic experiment that pushes the boundaries of storytelling. Directed by Philip Barantini (Boiling Point), the series is shot entirely in one continuous take per episode. That’s right—no cuts, no retakes, just pure, uninterrupted storytelling. This bold technique creates a raw, immersive experience that puts viewers right in the middle of the action, making every second feel urgent and real.
A Filmmaking Feat Like No Other
The concept of shooting an entire episode in a single take is ambitious and rarely attempted in television. While long-take sequences have been used in films like 1917 and Birdman, Adolescence takes it to another level by committing to this approach for the entire series.
Director Philip Barantini explains the challenge:
“Basically that means we press record on the camera, and we don’t press stop until the very end of the hour.

At 2025's 97th Academy Awards ceremony, 10 films vied to win Best Picture. However, the Oscars have not always included this many in the lineup. In fact, less than 30 years ago, there were only five nominees in the category. And the one that came away victorious in the 71st Academy Awards continues to be a controversial pick.
To some, Shakespeare in Love was an unexpected hit when it was released in 1998. Starring Joseph Fiennes and Gwyneth Paltrow (also named Best Actress), it excelled as a period drama and a fun historical reimagining. While some moviegoers continue to believe it did not earn its win, further reflection indicates that the Academy did, in fact, make the right decision.

Spoiler Alert: Spoilers follow for AdolescenceLess than three months into the year, we may have already seen the best TV series of 2025. This weekend saw Netflix release Adolescence, a four-episode miniseries created by Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham. The show depicts a family’s worst nightmare when 13-year-old Jamie Miller is arrested as the lead suspect in the murder of a classmate. Viewers are given an unflinching look at the impact left on Jamie’s family, his therapist, and his own life.
It’s also one of the most stylistically audacious shows in years. Every episode is shot as a single take, and unlike films like Birdman and 1917, which stitched multiple shots together through hidden cuts, the ones here were all shot and staged for real. O, the cinema. Where images come to life. After centuries of visual entertainment being restrained to static scenes in paintings and photographs, moving pictures allowed us to see beyond the image. A story told in 24 images every second. Combining the visual beauty of paintings with the engaging storytelling of literature. Over the decades of cinema’s existence has come with it the task in making these images look as beautiful as they can be. To have them carry the same emotional weight that paintings provide with a simple snapshot. These five films used their superb cinematography and art direction to prove that the moving image has to the ability not only to depict breathtaking images worthy of framing on a wall, but take us into a world in a fashion that only cinema can deliver. Nepo babies have been around as long as there have been artists. The idea of a "legacy" is one we humans simply cannot get away from. As storytelling beings, we will have always constructed -- and will continue to construct -- broad, historical, intergenerational narratives for ourselves. We can't stop tracing our professional and personal origins among the ancients, and writing their stories directly into our own. We simply shed our fascination with the possibility that talents can be passed from one generation to the next.
That's certainly the case in Hollywood, a relatively recent art institution in human history, but still rife with its own multigenerational legacies. It's likely you read the headline above and instantly thought of the Coppola clan. The Coppola family has, as of this writing, accrued 12 Oscar wins and 40 nominations between them, and they currently hold the record for the family with the most members to be nominated for Oscars.

The sense of shock at the sudden demise of film visual effects giant Mpc is palpable within the tightknit VFX industry, but few are surprised.
“I am gobsmacked,” said one UK VFX boss, who – like so many in the UK visual effects business – spent formative years of their career working at Mpc. For years, Mpc was the powerhouse name in film visual effects in the UK – the go-to facility for directors such as Ridley Scott and the leading VFX supplier to Disney and its Marvel superhero movies. Its Academy Award-winning work includes 1917, The Jungle Book and Life Of Pi.

Oscars cannot go without some of the most shocking upsets each year. And while the ceremony and the eventual winners are somehow becoming more and more predictable, each year, there are a few winners that either come out of the blue or are given the golden statuette instead of the much more deserving candidate. The unpredictability of the Academy Awards is part of what makes them so fascinating; whether it’s a surprise acting win, an underdog taking home Best Picture, or a perceived front-runner losing at the last moment, these moments ignite debate and fuel passionate discussions among film lovers and critics alike.
Over the years, the Oscars have been known to deliver results that defy conventional wisdom, often influenced by industry politics, sentimental favoritism, or last-minute campaign pushes. While some upsets are celebrated as victories for diversity and innovation in cinema, others leave audiences frustrated, feeling that a more deserving nominee was overlooked.

Everyone loves a good workplace comedy. These sitcoms appeal to everyone’s need to find joy in the smallest things, including their sometimes-tedious jobs. They’ve dominated the airwaves for decades, and they’ve done the same on modern streaming services. Jaume Collet-Serra hit the gold mine when he directed Netflix's recent Christmas action flick, Carry On, which starred Taron Egerton as a Tsa agent blackmailed by a group of international terrorists on Christmas Eve. Carry On was a major success for Netflix, breaking into the streamer's Top 5 most watched movies of all-time list. Collet-Serrra is now back to hopefully make lightning strike twice with a new horror/thriller that has been described as a blend between Don't Breathe and 1917.

Director Sam Mendes is currently working on his first documentary about the two men who helped liberate concentration camp Bergen-Belsen. More on What They Found below.
Sam Mendes is a busy man. Not only is he working on four different The Beatles biopics – one for each band member – he’s also venturing into the world of documentary filmmaking for the first time.
Deadline reports that Mendes is working on What They Found, a BBC documentary about Sgt Mike Lewis and Sgt Bill Lawrie, British soldiers and cameramen who accompanied a unit to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. The unit believed it was a hospital, but quickly realised it was something much more sinister.
Lewis and Lawrie’s footage, which will be used in the documentary, revealed the horrors of the Holocaust to the world.

On the surface, last weekend’s two-day, three-show sweep for “Anora” appeared an unlikely surge for a film that had been losing momentum as an Oscar favorite.
In reality, though, what happened is probably less of a case of “Anora” rallying than it is a simple matter of Oscar watchers learning more about what voters have probably been thinking all along.
The lesson began on Friday evening at about 6:55 p.m. With one award left to go at the Critics Choice Awards, “Anora” seemed to be about fourth or fifth on the list of likely Best Picture winners. It had gone 0-for-5 at the Golden Globes in early January and had gone 0-for-6 with Critics Choice voters going into the final award of the night – and not only had “Wicked” director Jon M. Chu just won the Best Director award in an upset that gave one of the top...

Fresh off the success of his Netflix thriller Carry-On, Jaume Collet-Serra has set up his next project, a survival thriller titled Play Dead.
Deadline reports that while the plot synopsis is under wraps at this time, Jaume Collet-Serra’s Play Dead is being described by sources as “Don’t Breathe meets 1917.”
Don’t Breathe is of course the intense home invasion horror movie directed by Fede Alvarez, while 1917 is the Sam Mendes-directed British war movie from back in 2019.
The implication here is that Play Dead is some kind of home invasion movie with a wartime setting, but that’s purely speculation based on what little we’re being told here.
Stay tuned for more on Play Dead as we learn it.
Peter Stanley-Ward & Natalie Conway wrote the screenplay. Nocturnal is producing alongside BoulderLight Pictures, Bad Grey, and Sam Raimi’s Ghost House Pictures.
Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert will produce through Ghost House Pictures.

The final Oscar voting period has begun, and the year of multiple contenders has finally found its frontrunner.
For months, Hollywood has searched for its strongest best picture candidate. Now, with a sweep at the Critics Choice, Directors Guild of America and Producers Guild of America awards, Sean Baker’s “Anora” has emerged as the film to beat. The one-two punch of a DGA and PGA win has historically been a strong indicator of Oscar success. Since the co-existence of both guilds, only six films have lost best picture at the Oscars after securing both prizes: “Apollo 13” (1995), “Saving Private Ryan” (1998), “Brokeback Mountain” (2005), “Gravity” (2013), “La La Land” (2016) and “1917” (2019).
The $6 million indie about an outer-borough sex worker has stood out in a field of blockbusters, biopics and musicals. It’s one of only two Oscar nominees with a perfect precursor record, earning nominations from every major guild and securing key Oscar nods.

The Academy Awards have staged some iconic showdowns. Think of the tension around “La La Land” versus “Moonlight,” “12 Years a Slave” versus “Gravity” or “The Godfather” versus “Cabaret.” Each was a nail-biter that kept viewers on the edge of their seats. But what happens when six films — “Anora,” “The Brutalist,” “A Complete Unknown,” “Conclave,” “Emilia Pérez” and “Wicked” — are all serious contenders for Hollywood’s most coveted prize? Enter “The Year Without the Frontrunner,” as Variety aptly dubbed it.
So, what is the pathway for each contender?
With 13 nominations, “Emilia Pérez” seems to have the logical edge (although recent controversies could derail that assertion). It has key guild nods and below-the-line Oscar mentions. But in this unpredictable year, historical trends are no guarantee. Major upcoming ceremonies like DGA, PGA and SAG may clarify the race — or make it even messier.

When it comes to war films, standouts like Dunkirk and All Quiet on the Western Front have demonstrated that while there are tropes and trends to follow within the genre, a firm vision, strong script, and talented ensemble can ensure that even the most familiar material can feel fresh in the right hands. Audiences certainly have their favorite pictures, and it's no surprise that many look back at classics like Saving Private Ryan when debating which films set the standard for the rest. However, the Sam Mendes picture, 1917, indicated that there was still so much more room to experiment within this space, producing a movie that was emotionally compelling and utterly grounded. 1917 stood...

The 12th annual Association of Motion Picture Sound Awards has announced its nominations for the Excellence in Sound for a Feature Film category, and three of this year’s predicted Best Sound Oscar nominees received bids: A Complete Unknown, Dune: Part Two, and Wicked. Two other Oscar frontrunners, Gladiator II and Emilia Pérez, were passed over in favor of a pair of Amps nominees that didn’t even make the Oscar shortlist: Conclave and The Substance.
More Amps categories will be announced in the coming weeks. Created in 1989, the Association of Motion Picture Sound has roughly 600 members and is based in the United Kingdom. From their website, “Our highly skilled members include Production Sound Mixers, Sound Designers, Supervising Sound Editors, Sound Editors, Re-recording Mixers, Music Mixers, Music Editors, Boom Operators, Sound Assistants, Foley Artists, and many more.”

When one thinks of movies during the holidays, one usually pictures films about Santa Claus, gifts, and snow. However, Christmas Day has also become a prime release date for high-profile dramas by top-tier directors. While autumn is traditionally the season for most award-winning releases, December 25th has emerged as a premium date for prestige films.
Christmas Day sees little competition in theaters, making it an attractive choice for major releases every few years. Though these films often aren’t massive box office hits, they generate significant awareness and position themselves well for the following year’s award season. December 25th may very well hold the record for producing the highest number of quality films in a single calendar day.

While his filmography might not be as large as some other big-name directors, the body of work Sam Mendes has built up over the years is impressive for the quality of the titles within. American Beauty (1999) was pretty phenomenal, as far as feature debuts go, with subsequent movies like Road to Perdition (2002), Jarhead (2005), Skyfall (2012), and 1917 (2019) all worthy of being considered among the best releases of their respective years.

For months, speculation has surrounded Harris Dickinson's potential involvement in Sam Mendes' upcoming quartet of films about The Beatles. Rumors have circulated that Dickinson will portray the late John Lennon for Mendes' ambitious project. The director, whose filmography includes acclaimed features such as American Beauty, Road to Perdition, Skyfall, and 1917, is set to direct four individual biopics, each centered around one of the members of the legendary rock group.
During a recent conversation with Dazed about his upcoming project, the erotic thriller Babygirl, Dickinson addressed the rumors of his participation in Mendes' biopics. And while he's not saying "no," he's also not saying "yes."
"There's nothing I can say about that; it might not be true, it might be, I don't know... there's a speculation culture."
Additional names mentioned as potential cast members are Paul Mescal as Paul McCartney, Charlie Rowe or Joseph Quinn as George Harrison, and Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr.

War movies play host to a range of notable genre tropes, from clichd army squads to weapons that apparently never run out of bullets. One of the genre's more prevalent clichs are films placing an enormous emphasis on the USA's involvement in winning both World Wars. The timely arrival of the American forces has been used to mark a turning point in the fortunes of Allied forces since the earliest days of cinema, contentiously overshadowing the heroics of the men and women who didn't hail from the United States but fought and died in the conflicts nonetheless.
This particular trope can be found in war films of every kind, from terrifying movies about nuclear war to tales of armed conflict that are based on true stories. Even the best war movies of all time aren't immune to this particular clich; the vast majority of the most celebrated World War...

Veterans Day is a federal holiday that honors the men and women who served.
Countless films have been made about their bravery, heroism and sacrifice.
Here are seven films to stream on Veterans Day this year:
“Saving Private Ryan”
Steven Spielberg’s ode to World War II veterans won five Oscars including Best Director for Spielberg — his second — while famously missing out on Best Picture to “Shakespeare in Love.” It is a visceral, emotional story of a group of soldiers, led by Tom Hanks, who are tasked with finding a private after the invasion of Normandy and bringing him home. Through their journey, Spielberg showcases the perspectives of everyone touched by the war, and the many different kinds of soldiers who fought for their country.
“Saving Private Ryan” is streaming on Paramount+ and Fubo.

We’re now five years removed from “Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker.” While there have been plenty of new “Star Wars” television shows on Disney+ — some of them even stellar — there’s still no clear answer to what Kathleen Kennedy and Lucasfilm want to do with the film arm of the massive franchise.
This week, the latest writer looking to bring the films back to the big screen is Simon Kinberg, the writer behind many of the X-Men movies. No one knows what those movies are going to be about just yet either, or when they could come out.
But the questions about where this franchise is going next have been percolating for years, to the point that we’ve bemoaned its lack of direction and lost potential on several occasions. “The Rise of Skywalker,” of course, was already the product of whiplash to fan reaction and backlash to “The Last Jedi,...

What if you were trapped in a bunker with Tilda Swinton, and she kept breaking out into song?
That’s (an extremely reductive version of) the premise for “The End,” director Joshua Oppenheimer’s oddball post-apocalyptic musical, for which Neon released a trailer on Monday. The trailer teases a romantic musical set in a billionaire family’s bunker after the end of the world they helped cause, with elegant sets and an unusual tone.
The film is Academy Award-nominated documentary filmmaker Oppenheimer’s (“The Act of Killing”) first narrative feature, which he wrote with Rasmus Heisterberg and produced with Signe Byrge Sorensen and Swinton. The film stars Academy Award winner Swinton (“Michael Clayton”), George Mackay (“1917”), Moses Ingram (“The Queen’s Gambit”), Bronagh Gallagher (“The Commitments”), Tim McInnerny (“One Day”), Lennie James (“The Walking Dead”), and Academy Award nominee Michael Shannon (“Nocturnal Animals”). The music is by Joshua Schmidt (“Midwestern Gothic...

The Oscar for Best Visual Effects is particularly tough to predict because of the complicated system by which the nominees are determined in three stages. The members of the executive committee of the branch cast preferential ballots to determine 20 films for further consideration. These are then winnowed down to 10 semi-finalists, which will be announced on December 17, 2024. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Visual Effects.)
All members of the branch are invited to a virtual screening of excerpts from these 10 films in January at which potential nominees may discuss their work. Ballots are counted using a system of re-weighted range voting to determine the five nominees, which will be revealed on January 17. The entire voting membership of the academy will then vote for the winners, which will be revealed during the 97th Academy Awards ceremony on March 2.
