Zack Snyder famously had a plan for an R-rated Star Wars story that never saw the light of day, thanks to Disney buying out the IP before Snyder had a chance to pitch it properly. Several years later, the idea found itself being developed as an original IP by Netflix, something that Snyder hoped would turn into a juggernaut like Star Wars itself.
Rebel Moon — Part One: A Child of Fire.
While beloved by Zack Snyder fans and general audiences, the beginning of the Rebel Moon IP failed to impress critics with its first part, A Child of Fire. Considering that the girl was only the first half of the story, Snyder has come out saying that the first film will merit re-evaluation when the second film, The Scargiver, hits streaming on April 19th.

This is a stacked weekend for movies that could get awards attention but probably won’t, both in theaters and on digital platforms. First up is a lively ode to one of cinema’s musical masters.
The contender to watch this week: “Ennio”
Giuseppe Tornatore‘s documentary about influential composer Ennio Morricone has been a long time coming, and not only because Morricone’s career dates back to 1946. “Ennio” premiered at the Venice International Film Festival in 2021 and was released in Italy in 2022. But don’t take its delayed domestic debut as a bad omen: The movie is a spellbinding tribute to the two-time Oscar winner, who wrote the scores for “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly,” “Days of Heaven,” “The Untouchables,” “The Hateful Eight,” and Tornatore’s own “Cinema Paradiso.” The talking heads include Quentin Tarantino, Clint Eastwood, Quincy Jones, and Bruce Springsteen. Following a theatrical run in February,...

Guillermo del Toro almost directed a "really cool" 'Star Wars' film. The 'Nightmare Alley' filmmaker was set to work with 'The Dark Knight' screenwriter David S. Goyer on a movie in the sci-fi franchise but the project never went ahead due to "a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff going on" at the time.Asked which major franchise he'd like to be involved with, David revealed on the 'Happy Sad Confused' podcast: "I wrote an unproduced 'Star Wars' movie that Guillermo del Toro was going to direct... That was about four years ago.“There was just a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff going on at Lucasfilm at the time, but it’s a cool script... There’s a lot of cool artwork from it that was produced.”And later in the interview, the writer revealed he had written a separate unproduced scriptment for an "origins of the Jedi movie...

In Guillermo del Toro's acceptance speech for his adaptation of "Pinnochio" winning the Best Animated Film Award at the 2023 Oscars, he brought up a talking point that animation fans have been preaching for years: animation is a medium, not a genre. This is why there is such a rich, diverse landscape of entertainment provided by animation, and why it's wrong to simply write off the medium as "kid's stuff." Sure, animation has been the medium from which countless children's entertainment classics came to life, but it's also a place where complex, adult stories featuring characters that are seldom shown in live-action can be told. It's likewise a medium that thrives in varying lengths of time.
It's no surprise when a big-budget action blockbuster crosses the two-hour mark for its runtime, and it's almost expected if a film is coming from an "auteur" director. But considering the majority of Western...

Fresh off an Oscar triumph for Best Animated Feature, “Pinnochio” director Guillermo del Toro may have found his stars for his next big project.
The filmmaker behind “Crimson Peak,” “Pan’s Labyrinth” and “Pacific Rim” is prepping a new adaptation of Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein” for Netflix. Andrew Garfield (“Tick Tick … Boom”), Oscar Isaac (“Ex Machina”) and Mia Goth (“Pearl”) are in early talks to join, according to multiple media reports.
While it’s unknown whether Isaac or Garfield would be playing, respectively, Dr. Frankenstein and his cursed creation, it is presumed that Goth would be playing Frankenstein’s love interest, who may or may not be Elizabeth Lavenza.

A nun teams up with an enemy AI to find the Holy Grail. That synopsis sounds like it was written– well, by an AI, but actually it comes from Damon Lindelof and Tara Hernandez, who premiered their eclectic drama at South by Southwest on Tuesday.
At the premiere, star Betty Gilpin described the show as “No country for old Looney Tunes” and laughed afterward, saying they had just shared “the two normal episodes.” Costar Jake McDornan described the scripts as “mad libs that snowballed out of control.”
“The missive here is ‘Keep Austin weird,'” Lindelof said ahead of the March 14 premiere. “‘Mrs. Davis’ is hopefully going to do just that.” The first two episodes had the crowd laughing at scripted jokes, visual gags, and general absurdity, including multiple high-octane action sequences.

Before he died in 1999, Stanley Kubrick had grand plans for multiple films, including his retelling of Napoleon Bonaparte's life that would have seen none other than Jack Nicholson in the title role. But for me, his long-gestating adaptation of British author Brian Aldiss's short story "Supertoys Last All Summer Long" was a much more interesting project — simply because it demonstrated Kubrick's remarkable prescience through his fascination with artificial intelligence back in the '70s.
The way things played out, Kubrick never made his "Supertoys," handing off directing duties to Steven Spielberg before his death. This is a shame because while Spielberg's attempt at bringing the story to the screen is mostly well-respected, I always felt the full Kubrick treatment would have yielded a genuine masterpiece.
As it stands, we have 2001's "A.I. Artificial Intelligence." Set in a climate change-ravaged 22nd century, the movie follows David (Haley Joel Osment...

Pinocchio is the movie directed by Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson, starring Gregory Mann and David Bradley. It premiered at the AFI Fest in November, and is now streaming on Netflix.
This year, Robert Zemeckis‘s Pinnochio was released, and got mixed reviews. Guillermo del Toro‘s version of the story is set in a completely different era – 1920’s Italy. This latest adaptation is largely done with stop motion animation.

Ewan McGregor is having quite the year. After his Emmy-winning performance in Netflix's "Halston" and the immense success of his return as Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Disney+ limited series, the "Star Wars" legend will be next seen in an adaptation of a beloved novel.
"A Gentleman In Moscow," the bestselling story from American author Amor Towles (who also wrote "Rules of Civility" and "The Lincoln Highway"), is getting the adaptation treatment (via Variety). The book has sold over a million copies and has been translated into 30 languages since its publication in 2016, and a series based on Towles' novel will be streaming on Paramount+ soon. If you haven't read it yet — now's probably a good time. It's a moving story about luck, second chances, and how the most mundane-seeming decisions and interactions with people can change the course of your life. Disney’s 1989 animated show “Chip ‘n Dale,” about two chipmunks-turned-detectives, has a lot of fans out there. It’s one of Disney’s most popular shows. But it was also kind of silly, kind of lame, almost pointless, and solely aimed at kids who find water fights funny.

American High, Animal Pictures and Depth of Field have teamed up to produce the new Hulu feature “Love in Color.”
Animal Pictures and Depth of Field began development on the film before joining forces with American High, which has built a successful partnership with Hulu with buzzy releases like “Big Time Adolescence,” “The Binge,” “The Ultimate Playlist of Noise” and “Plan B.”
Written by Kirsten King and Casey Rackham, “Love in Color” follows an aspiring young artist. When forced to join her high school track team, she uses it as an opportunity to pursue the girl she’s been harboring a long-time crush on. But she soon finds herself unexpectedly falling for another teammate and discovering what real love feels like.

Chile’s Chilemonos International Animation Festival, the country’s largest event dedicated to celebrating its rapidly expanding animation scene, kicked off its second entirely online edition last week, and will run through July 25.
2021 is a milestone year for the festival, marking a decade since its inaugural edition. Since then, the festival has grown exponentially and become the only Academy Award qualifying event for animated shorts in Latin America. Once again this year, organizers are predicting record numbers of attendees on the event’s digital platform and are eagerly looking forward to an in-person event in 2022.
Uniquely, and excitingly for animation fans across Central and South America, Chilemonos’ entire competition and events lineup will be accessible across Latin America free of charge, supported by an alliance with the OndaMedia platform – which hosts the online version of the fest – and the Department of Culture at Chile’s Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage.

With their new joint vehicle, Mediawan & Leonine Studios, they’re now ready to gear up to the next stage with the acquisition of the award-winning U.K. production company Drama Republic.
The acquisition allows their new outfit, which is financially backed by New York-based private equity firm Kkr, and Mediawan to make its first foray into the U.K. and more broadly into the competitive English-language market. But that’s only the beginning, as the execs said they will look to make one or two mergers and acquisitions per year and are looking at markets such as Germany, France, Scandinavia and the U.S.

When Bosch first premiered on Amazon Prime Video in 2014, the streaming world was in a very different place. Netflix had only House of Cards and Orange is the New Black under its belt. Hulu was still a joint venture owned by multiple conglomerates. Disney+, HBO Max, and Peacock didn’t even exist. Now, in June 2021, Amazon Prime’s list of new releases is highlighted by one last outing for LAPD Detective Harry Bosch.
Bosch season 7 premieres on June 25. This will be the last batch of episodes for the series, before a spinoff gets rolling for IMDb TV. For those who are not caught up on the sprawling procedural, Amazon has some other original TV series this month as well. Brazilian crime drama Dom premieres on June 4. That will be followed by the second season of the Anna Paquin-starring public relations drama Flack on June 25.

For 55 years, “Ultraman” has been one of Japan’s A-list superheroes — defending the planet from alien kaiju and inspiring all manner of global pop culture, from the “Power Rangers” to Paul Rudd’s “Ant-Man” suit. But while the character has a loyal following outside of Japan, Ultraman has never become a massive crossover phenomenon at the scale of Godzilla or Pokémon.
Netflix is hoping to change that.
The streamer is partnering with Tsuburaya Productions to develop “Ultraman” as a CG-animated feature film aimed at bringing a new, wider audience to the beloved silver-suited character. Shannon Tindle, an animator who’s worked on “Coraline” and “Kubo and the Two Strings,” will make his feature directorial debut with the project, from a script he wrote with “Kubo” screenwriter Marc Haimes. John Aoshima will co-direct.

Robert De Niro has joined the cast of “About My Father,” an upcoming film that’s loosely based on the life of standup comic Sebastian Maniscalco.
De Niro is set to play Maniscalco’s dad Salvo in the movie, reuniting the pair after first appearing together in Martin Scorsese’s mob drama “The Irishman.”
In “About My Father,” Sebastian tells his old-school Italian immigrant dad of his plans to propose to his all-American girlfriend, prompting Salvo to insist on crashing a weekend with her parents.
Nathan Kahane, president of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, says production on the film will begin later in 2021.
“The way Sebastian talks about his father, Salvo sounds to us like the type of guy who thinks that Robert De Niro should play him in a movie. So we thought, why not?” Kahane said in a statement. “Actually, Robert De Niro is incredibly selective about the projects he chooses,...

The legendary Ann Roth is our reigning Best Costume Design Oscar queen, having won her second statuette for the jazz age designs of Ma Rainey's Black Bottom. I'm ecstatic about her victory. Both because it's an outstanding artistic achievement and because hers is a filmography that undoubtedly deserves more than one Oscar. That being said, this year's Costume race (which I previously reviewed in depth) did remind me of a pet peeve I've long had with the category—namely, the overwhelming predominance of period films and the rarity of recognition for contemporary-set narratives. As usual, all of this year's nominees featured period costuming, with even the lone fantasy film, Pinocchio, basing most of its look in mid-19th-century fashion.
With all this in mind, I decided to do some research and find out what era is most common in Best Costume Design Oscar winners. From Ancient Egypt to post-war London,...

With ‘Nomadland’ Pulled, Italy’s ‘Pinocchio’ Becomes First Oscar-Nominated Film to Hit China in 2021
Move over, “Nomadland” — Italy’s “Pinocchio” is now set to become the first film nominated at this year’s Oscars to hit China.
Although Chloé Zhao’s film nabbed best picture and two other major prizes at the Academy Awards on Sunday, it was pulled quietly from its planned China release on April 23 in the wake of nationalist backlash against her there. This means that Matteo Garrone’s live-action “Pinocchio” is the first of the movies recognized by the Academy this year to get a Chinese theatrical run. It will hit theaters on June 1, Children’s Day.
An adaptation of Carlo Collodi’s original 1883 book “The Adventures of Pinocchio,” it earned Oscar nods for costume design, and makeup and hairstyling this year. The film stars Roberto Benigni as Pinocchio’s father, who is best known for his role in the 1997 drama “Life Is Beautiful,” which was released in China for...

It has been another strange and uncertain year for Hollywood, with the pandemic hitting cinemas hard and streaming services rising to hold the fort. It has also been a year in which we’ve seen a growing diversity in front of, and behind the camera, with an increasing focus on new voices and new stories being told.
Last year saw Bong Joon-ho ‘s Parasite achieve Oscar greatness and, for a brief pre-covid moment, it seemed that the world of cinema was beginning to embrace a wider world. The 2021 BAFTAs showed signs this was continuing with Minari, Another Round and Promising Young Woman taking home a clutch of awards each.
This year’s American Academy Awards will be a strange affair, certainly one to remember.

Jon Batiste, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross won this year’s Oscar for Best Original Score for their work on Disney-Pixar’s “Soul.” (See the winners list.) The trio’s competition included Terence Blanchard for “Da 5 Bloods,” Emile Mosseri for “Minari,” James Newton Howard for “News of the World” and Reznor and Ross themselves for “Mank.” “Soul” is only the second film to win Best Original Score without a corresponding Best Picture nomination since the latter category’s expansion in 2009, joining “The Hateful Eight” (2015).

The trio of composers behind Disney-Pixar’s “Soul” won the Oscar for best original score Sunday night. It was the first Academy Award for jazz artist Jon Batiste and the second for Nine Inch Nail rock writers-turned-film composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Finch.
Batiste becomes only the second Black composer to clinch the original score award in the 86-year history of the category.
“God gave us 12 notes,” Batiste said at the podium. “It’s the same 12 notes Duke Ellington had, Bach had, Nina Simone…. Every gift is special. Every contribution with music that comes from the divine, into the instruments, into the film, into the minds and hearts and souls of every person who hears it. The stories that happen when you listen to it, the stories you share, the moments you create, the memories you make, man, it’s just so incredibly special.”

With the Oscars coronating another winner for best original song, it’s an occasion to look back at 20 of the times when the golden guy got it most right with the tune he carried, from “Lullaby of Broadway” to “Lose Yourself.”
1: “White Christmas”
from “Holiday Inn” (1942), by Irving Berlin
It always feels strange watching the “Holiday Inn” scene where Bing Crosby, playing a songwriter, teaches this song to Marjorie Reynolds as something that had recently come off the top of his head, because implicit in the scene is the idea that “White Christmas” was written by a human, not God. The same could be said of its status of an Oscar winner, which never fails to surprise younger generations: Isn’t it from a hymnal of some sort? If it’s true that Berlin said at the time that it wasn’t just the best song he ever wrote...

“Mank” is the only film in contention at the 2021 Oscars to break the double digit barrier in the nominations count. This Netflix period picture reaped a leading 10 bids. In a six-way tied for second place with, appropriately enough, six nominations apiece are “The Father,” “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Minari,” “Nomadland,” “Sound of Metal,” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” All seven of these films are up for Best Picture. That race is rounded out by five-time contender “Promising Young Woman.”

The films up for the 2021 Best Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar are “Emma,” “Hillbilly Elegy,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “Mank,” and “Pinocchio.” Our current odds show that “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” (16/5) is favored to win, followed in order by “Hillbilly Elegy” (4/1), “Pinocchio” (4/1), “Mank” (9/2), and “Emma” (9/2).
Mark Coulier (“Pinocchio”) has already won this award twice for his work in “The Iron Lady” (2012) and “The Grand Budapest Hotel” (2015). He is now one of 18 makeup artists to be nominated by the academy at least three times. If he prevails on this outing, he will tie Ve Neill’s record for third most wins in this category, after Rick Baker (seven) and Greg Cannom (four).
Two members of the “Hillbilly Elegy” team are also previous winners. Patricia Denahey brought home a trophy for “Vice” two years ago, while Matthew W. Mungle did so for “Dracula” in 1993. Mungle later reaped bids for his work in “Schindler’s List...

Exclusive: The Current War and The Giver scribe Michael Mitnick has been set to write Jim Henson biopic Muppet Man for Disney and The Jim Henson Company, we can reveal.
Currently in development, the live-action film will chart the life and times of the legendary puppeteer, creator of The Muppets, Fraggle Rock and many of the Sesame Street characters, as well as director of cult films such as Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal.
The movie will home in on Henson’s journey to convince broadcasters that The Muppets was a great idea and how he worked to get the characters on air where they became a comedy staple.
Henson’s daughter Lisa Henson, currently in production on Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming Pinocchio for Netflix, is producing for The Jim Henson Company.
Playwright and screenwriter Mitnick is rewriting a previous version of a script by Adrift scribes Aaron and Jordan Kandell.

The films in contention for the 2021 Best Costume Design Oscar are “Emma,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “Mank,” “Mulan,” and “Pinocchio.” Our current odds show “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” (16/5) to be the frontrunner, followed in order by “Emma” (39/10), “Mank” (4/1), “Mulan” (9/2), and “Pinocchio” (9/2).
This is the sixth time that Alexandra Byrne (“Emma”) has competed for this award. Only 12 others have received as many or more nominations for their costuming work. She previously prevailed in 2008 for “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” after first earning a bid in 1999 for the film’s predecessor, “Elizabeth.” She was later recognized for her work on a third film that included Queen Elizabeth I as a main character: “Mary Queen of Scots” (2019). Her remaining two bids came for “Hamlet” (1997) and “Finding Neverland” (2005).
24 years ago, Ruth Myers was nominated here for an earlier version of Jane Austen’s “Emma” but lost to Ann Roth (“The English Patient”). Roth has now...

The race for makeup and hair is particularly noteworthy this season. It includes transforming Viola Davis into the pioneering blues singer of “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” turning Glenn Close into the fiery Appalachian grandmother of “Hillbilly Elegy,” adding floral flourishes to Anya Taylor-Joy’s titular matchmaker in “Emma,” meticulously recreating Hollywood’s Golden Age in black-and-white in “Mank,” and creating a unique wooden look to the titular puppet of “Pinocchio.”
But with the Academy tilting toward transforming real-life people in recent years, “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” is the favorite, especially after its sweep of the coveted Muahs Guild Awards. Plus, Davis is the favorite in the Best Actress race. She landed her fourth Oscar nomination — the most of any Black actress — as the sexy, subversive Rainey. And the actress was boldly uncompromising in demanding verisimilitude with the help of gold teeth, charcoal-like makeup, and a wig made of horsehair. She tapped her personal makeup stylist,...

The Oscar race for costume design is once again devoted to dazzling period pieces: George C. Wolfe’s August Wilson adaptation “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” (the Cdga period winner), Autumn de Wilde’s “Emma,” David Fincher’s monochromatic “Mank,” Niki Caro’s live-action “Mulan (the Cdga fantasy winner), and Matteo Garrone’s “Pinocchio.”
But “Ma Rainey’s” 89-year-old, Oscar-winning costume designer, Ann Roth (“The English Patient”) is the clear favorite. And it certainly helps that the momentum is with Viola Davis in the Best Actress race. This was her fourth Oscar nomination — the most for any Black actress. She plays the trailblazing ’20s blues singer, who flaunted her flashy wardrobe to convey a sexy, subversive image. Ross put Davis in a rubber suit modeled after Aretha Franklin, and assembled an array of bold and durable outfits (including flowing berry-red and blue velvet dresses). But, crucially, Roth also helped out hair...
