Noir was to be the second in a suite of live-action Spider-Man Universe series for MGM+ and Prime Video. However, there was no mention at the upfront of the first, Silk: Spider Society.

The project’s showrunner, well regarded Walking Dead alum Angela Kang, remains under an overall deal at Amazon MGM Studios where she will work on other projects. From the tiniest micro-organism to the far reaches of the universe, sci-fi adaptations have made a triumphant splash across multiple streaming platforms. For decades, the collective groans that routinely followed book-to-tv adaptation announcements were a given.
At the same time, many science fiction books are so steeped in lore, character motivations, politics, and scientific complexities that converting prose to a "show but don't tell" format is a tall task.
Star Trek, for instance, has historically been pretty cut and dry with its science. A phaser will vaporize you, and a transporter will, well, transport you.
Now, imagine explaining the three-body problem from a show but don't tell approach.
Thankfully, the rash of exciting new sci-fi adventures solves these riddles with filmmakers and writers who are passionate about the material.

There’s a lot going on in the world of Alien at the moment. The original classic is returning to theaters, for starters, and the Xenomorphs will be fighting Marvel’s superheroes in the upcoming mashup comic Aliens vs. Avengers. Of course, the main event for 2024 is Fede Alvarez’s Alien: Romulus, a brand new big screen movie set between Alien and Aliens!
With so much going on, you’d be forgiven for forgetting that Disney is also working on an “Alien” television series, in the works for FX from creator Noah Hawley (“Legion”).
The Alien franchise’s first ever television series is likely to arrive sometime in 2025, set to be the first story in the franchise that takes place on Earth, roughly 70 years in the future.
FX teases, “Expect a scary thrill ride set not too far in the future here on Earth.”
So what’s the latest on the “Alien” TV series?...

It’s always fun to discuss horror novels that Aren’T Stephen King. No knock on the monster from Maine, he’s the master of horror novels over the last, oh I don’t know, 50 years, for a reason but its nice to not have the show be solely dedicated to his adapted works. He says knowing that he makes the schedule and decides what books to cover. See you in May, Mr. King! Funnily enough, the man actually loved today’s subject to the degree that he called it one of 2006’s best horror novels, but more on that in a little bit. The Ruins (watch it Here) was one of those hot properties by an author whose previous work was an instant success with critics, fans, and studio executives that put it to celluloid. The book came out and just two years later we were given a movie...

Jonathan Nolan has co-written some of the finest genre films of the 21st century (from The Prestige to Interstellar to The Dark Knight) and co-showrun one of the most groundbreaking sci-fi TV shows ever made (Westworld). Now, he’s back — this time as director and executive producer of Amazon’s dramatic adaptation of the blockbuster Fallout video game franchise.
The project (from showrunners Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner) follows three very different survivors in a postapocalyptic landscape 200 years after a nuclear war. Original The Good Doctor cast member Chuku Modu is once again a series regular on the ABC medical drama, playing Dr. Jared Kalu.
Modu, who originally returned midway through last season as a recurring, has been promoted to regular for the upcoming seventh season, now in production.

Set in the small and charming yet dead-body-filled fictional town of Cabot Cove, Maine, the show wormed its way into the hearts of procedural fans everywhere with its familiar structure and unlikely hero -- middle-aged mystery writer Jessica Fletcher (Angela Lansbury). While the actor behind the beloved amateur sleuth passed away in 2022, "Murder, She Wrote" lives on, both in the form of much-watched reruns and in an upcoming movie adaptation.
Little is known about the new version of "Murder, She Wrote" at this point, but screenwriters Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo have said that the story will relate back to Cabot Cove and Jessica in some capacity. When it comes to potential cameos from old cast members, the pool is unfortunately limited, as several of the series' lead actors have passed away in the decades since the show ended.

Jared Harris, Joseph Fiennes & Sheila Atim Leading A+E/Sky’s ‘Royal Kill List’
Jared Harris, Joseph Fiennes and Sheila Atim are leading an A+E Networks/Sky series about King Charles I from Jimmy Savile: A British Horror Story producer 72 Films. Royal Kill List is Sky History’s latest docu-drama following in the footsteps of the likes of Royal Bastards: Rise of The Tudors and The Royal Mob. The three-part series looks back at one of the most seismic events in British royal history. In 1649, for the first and only time, a British monarch was publicly executed, having been tried and convicted of treason by Parliament. This bloody spectacle heralded 10 years of Britain as a republic before, in May 1660, the monarchy was restored with the accession of King Charles II. Told through dramatic reconstruction, Atim for the Royalists, Harris for the Regicides, and Fiennes for King Charles II will play out the Jacobean tragedy,...

Lucky Hank wasn’t lucky enough to secure a second season as AMC has canceled the Bob Odenkirk-starring dramedy after only eight episodes.
A stark contrast to the actor’s role on Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, Lucky Hank starred Odenkirk as the chairman of a Rust Belt university suffering from a midlife crisis of sorts.
The Season One finale aired in May, but the series was left hanging on a renewal pending both the writers and actors strikes; while those strikes have been resolved for months, AMC ultimately...

Prime Video has shared the first trailer for Fallout, the much-anticipated series based on the long-running and acclaimed video game franchise.
The preview drops viewers right into the post-apocalyptic and ultra-violent world resided by monsters, mutants, machines and canines, with Ella Purnell’s Lucy, Aaron Moten’s Maximus, and Walter Goggins’ the Ghoul (the skeleton-looking cowboy dude) shouldering the interweaving plot lines.
“Fallout is the story of haves and have-nots in a world in which there’s almost nothing left to have,” Prime Video said in its synopsis of the series.

We now have a few more details on exactly how, following this year’s strikes, the streaming residuals for both actors and writers will work in the future.
The strikes that crippled Hollywood and forced major studios to delay most of their slate have finally come to an end. The Writers’ Guild of America (WGA) reached and agreement with Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) in late September and the Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) followed on 9th November.
One of the key issues in both negotiations was streaming residuals. Writers and actors typically get a fee every time their project is broadcast, but in the era of streaming, these residuals have begun to seem a bit small when platforms allow subscribers to stream hours and hours of TV shows and films.
Deadline has done a comprehensive explanation on just how the...

Writers and actors spent the summer searching for increased residuals for streaming shows and they were somewhat successful. Both the WGA and SAG-AFTRA secured success-based bonuses for series at Netflix, Amazon, Apple, Disney+, Max, Peacock and Paramount+ as part of their shiny three-year agreements.
But what does it mean in practice? What shows will really nab the bonus checks? How much will they make and what comes next?
It’s clear that Netflix’s biggest series such as Stranger Things, Wednesday and Bridgerton will be rewarded under the new system. But sources and experts told Deadline that it’s likely that a number of other shows such as Peacock’s Natasha Lyonne-fronted Poker Face and Disney+’s Marvel series Secret Invasion starring Samuel L. Jackson would be close to making the cut through the revamped model.
On the other hand, it might be hard for shows on other streamers...

200 years after the apocalypse, the gentle denizens of luxury fallout shelters are forced to return to the irradiated hellscape their ancestors left behind — and are shocked to discover an incredibly complex, gleefully weird and highly violent universe waiting for them.

It looks like Prime Video's cancellation spree is far from over.
Freshman dramas Harlan Coban's Shelter and The Horror of Dolores Roach have been canceled alongside With Love.
The streaming service revealed the decision on Tuesday evening, which comes right before Thanksgiving.
It's not uncommon for media conglomerates to bury this kind of news around the holiday period, so there's less awareness of it and, in turn, less pushback from their fans.
But all three shows had devoted audiences who would have probably followed them wherever they went.

The cancelations continue ahead of the holiday weekend.
Amazon has axed a trio of scripted series from its Prime Video service: The Horror of Dolores Roach, Harlan Coben’s Shelter, and With Love are all ending.
The Horror of Dolores Roach and Harlan Coben’s Shelter ran for one season, while With Love is ending after two seasons.
They are the latest cancelations at the streamer over the last few months following shows such as The Peripheral and A League of Their Own, which had both been renewed before those decisions were reversed.

‘Shadow And Bone’, ‘Glamorous’ & ‘Agent Elvis’ Among 5 Series Canceled By Netflix Amid Strike Impact
Exclusive: Netflix will not be going forward with more seasons of live-action series Shadow and Bone and Glamorous and adult animated comedies Agent Elvis, Farzar and Captain Fall.
The decision was made a week after the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike and a month and a half after the end of the WGA work stoppage as networks and platforms continue to evaluate the impact from the strike-related seven-month production shutdown.
While there had been a slew of series cancellations and un-renewals by linear networks and streamers during and immediately after the strikes, Netflix had largely refrained from making cancellation decisions during the past 6½ months while announcing a number of renewals, including One Piece (S2), Ginny & Georgia (S3 and S4); The Lincoln Lawyer (S3), Xo, Kitty (S2), Heartstopper (S2 and S3), The Night Agent (S2 picked up on the eve of the WGA strike), The Diplomat (S2), Fubar (S2), Sweet Magnolias...

Well, this is a bummer.
Paramount+ has canceled the Fatal Attraction reboot and Rabbit Hole after their freshman seasons.
The streaming service announced the shocking news Thursday.

"We want to thank both series' entire creative teams, crews and the fantastic casts for their dedication to bringing these series to life."
Fatal Attraction premiered April 30 on Paramount+ in the U.S. and international territories.
The streaming service described the series as "a deep dive reimagining of the 1980s cultural touchstone Fatal Attraction through the lens of privilege, personality disorders, family dynamics and murder."

“Fallout” fans now have a new date to circle in their calendars: April 12, 2024. That’s when Prime Video’s highly anticipated live-action TV series adaptation of the beloved video game franchise will debut, the streamer announced on Monday (which is the 26th anniversary of “Fallout Day”).

Exclusive: Freeform has opted not to proceed with While You Were Breeding, the upcoming Kristin Newman hourlong comedy series based on her memoir, Deadline has learned. Producers of the series, from Freeform Studios, will have the opportunity to shop it elsewhere.
The 10-episode series had wrapped production and was headed into post-production when it paused days into the WGA strike. Newman on May 13 wrote an emotional Facebook post explaining her decision to shut down post-production.
As a result, While You Were Breeding, starring Chelsea Frei, missed its August premiere date. After a review of Freeform’s pipeline in the context of Disney’s companywide content spend trim and emphasis on curation, it was determined that the comedy no longer fit the linear network’s programming strategy, sources said.

Another previously-renewed series has been canceled amid the ongoing writers and actors’ strikes. Peacock‘s Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin will not be returning for a second season, according to Deadline, which attributes it to “the length of the work stoppage” as a result of the two strikes as the WGA and SAG-AFTRA seek new deals with AMPTP. Pre-production had yet to begin on the previously-ordered new season in May (when the writers’ strike started), and according to the outlet, “such a delay would impact Peacock’s pipeline as there is already a schedule — and budget — in place for content rollout.” The same was true for two recent cancellations by another streaming service, Prime Video, which reversed Season 2 pickups for The Peripheral and A League of Their Own in August. Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin took places several years after fans last saw Adam Devine as Bumper Allen in the film franchise.

Peacock has reversed course and canceled the second season of its Pitch Perfect TV spinoff Bumper in Berlin, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
The renewal was first announced back in January, after the show’s first six-episode season debuted on Nov. 23, 2022. At the time of the renewal, NBCU said Bumper in Berlin was the streamer’s top comedy series to date, but has not released any viewing data.
The cancellation comes amid Hollywood’s dual WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, and marks yet another series, alongside the canceled second seasons of Prime Video’s The Peripheral and A League of Their Own, to have the plug pulled during the work stoppage. At the time, A League of Their Own co-creator and star Abbi Jacobson criticized Prime Video’s decision, writing that “to blame this cancellation on the strike is bullshit and cowardly.”

“Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin” has been canceled at Peacock despite the fact the show was previously renewed for a second season.
The spinoff of the “Pitch Perfect” film franchise originally debuted on Peacock in November 2022 and was renewed in January 2023. According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, the decision was made to cancel the series as the ongoing strikes in Hollywood meant that production was not able to begin as originally scheduled.
The series saw Adam Devine return as Bumper Allen as he moves to Germany to revive his music career when one of his songs becomes big in Berlin. Along with Devine, the cast of Season 1 included Flula Borg, Sarah Hyland, Lera Abova and Jameela Jamil. Per NBCU, the series scored the biggest comedy premiere in Peacock history, as it was watched by more accounts in its launch weekend than any other Peacock Original comedy to date.

Exclusive: Peacock is not moving forward with a second season of comedy series Pitch Perfect: Bumper In Berlin. This marks a reversal of the Season 2 renewal for the offshoot from the Pitch Perfect movie franchise, which was announced in early January.
Like was the case of two Prime Video series whose Season 2 renewals were rescinded last month — The Peripheral and A League of Their Own — the cancellation of Bumper In Berlin stems from the length of the work stoppage due to the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, which have delayed production, creating large gaps between seasons and making shows miss their target release dates.
Bumper In Berlin‘s first season was released in November 2022. The comedy had not started pre-production on Season 2 when the WGA strike began May 2. It has now fallen significantly behind its planned timeline. Such a delay would impact Peacock’s pipeline as there is...

At Amazon’s Prime Video, the push to find a hit show that would define the streaming service for viewers came from the very top. Prime had critical darlings like “Fleabag” and popular series like “The Boys,” but founder Jeff Bezos wanted something bigger, something that all of America would watch one night a week and talk about the other six.
As the company more than doubled its spending on original TV content between 2016 and 2019, Bezos gave his team of executives a simple directive: “I want my ‘Game of Thrones.’”
Prime Video’s content budget hit $16.6 billion in 2022, and this year, it’s predicted to reach $20 billion even as the competition tightens spending. The search for a “Game of Thrones” yielded epic fantasies “The Wheel of Time” and “Lord of the Rings” prequel “The Rings of Power,” as well as high-concept sci-fi shows like “Citadel” and “The Peripheral.” Amazon executives...

Welcome to the 228th episode of TV’s Top 5, The Hollywood Reporter’s TV podcast.
Every week, hosts Lesley Goldberg (West Coast TV editor) and Daniel Fienberg (chief TV critic) break down the latest TV news with context from the business and critical sides, welcome showrunners, executives and other guests, and provide a critical guide of what to watch (or skip, as the case may be).
This week’s podcast — the last until Sept. 8 as we’ll be off for Labor Day — takes a deep dive into the Alliance of Motion Pictures and Television Producers’ counteroffer to the Writers Guild of America, as well as the union’s response to it.
Here’s how the episode plays out:
1. Mailbag, strike edition
In place of our traditional Headlines segment, we return to answering listener questions, and this week explore if artificial intelligence replaces critics and why some reality show hosts continue working during the strikes.

A League of Their Own is down, but perhaps not entirely out just yet.
In a lengthy social media post on Wednesday, Will Graham — who co-created the series adaptation with Broad City‘s Abbi Jacobson — offered a glimmer of hope that the show could find a new home after its Season 2 renewal was reversed by Prime Video earlier this month.

A League of Their Own co-creator Will Graham wants fans of their since-canceled Amazon series to hold out hope that the show will find a new home, as well as for the Lgbtqia+ community who embraced the queer take on Penny Marshall’s beloved movie of the same name.
“We are still fighting for League,” Graham, who changed their pronouns after working on the series, wrote in a lengthy message on social media. “If we have an avenue to do it well, we will continue the show.”
Amazon on Aug. 18 reversed its plan for an abbreviated four-episode second and final season of the women in baseball show created by Graham and star Abbi Jacobson. The news came after a months-long negotiation with producers Sony Pictures Television in which the studio reduced the show’s licensing fee in order to get the show picked up for a second season. As THR reported at the time,...
