After going all out during an awards season in which the company was uniquely well-situated to run the table, Netflix is rolling into March with a release slate that doesn’t suggest the dawn of spring so much as it does a garage sale. Which isn’t to say that there aren’t any good movies dropping on the platform this month, only that few of them seem poised to make a big splash, and the ones that might (the Eric Andre prank comedy “Bad Trip” comes to mind) haven’t been made available to critics yet. That’s also true of the many international titles that will be made available to stream over the next few weeks, some of which seem promising (we have our eyes on the Olga Kurylenko “Taken” riff “Sentinelle”), but none of which have made an impression on the festival circuit.

It’s been 15 years since screenwriter Tina Fey brought peace to the teenage girl world with the groundbreaking “Mean Girls.” Now it’s her frequent creative partner Amy Poehler’s turn to stride the hallways of a contemporary high school, searching for harmony and justice among the heightened emotions and high-stakes conundrums of young adults.
Marking the multi-hyphenate Poehler’s return to the director’s chair after her casually comforting “Wine Country,” the good-natured dramedy “Moxie” isn’t nearly as sharp as “Mean Girls,” lacking its hilarious wit and unwavering bite, often erring on the side of didacticism and broadness in similarly charting a fed-up young woman’s awakening against her high school’s hostile, victimizing culture. Still, it’s a welcome entry into a familiar genre that will resonate with young audiences burdened by the unwritten rules of their respective educational institutions. "I don't like being voted 'Best Ass'!!" Netflix has launched the first official trailer for the film Moxie, a new high school comedy directed by comedian Amy Poehler (her second directing gig after Wine Country a few years back). Fed up with the sexist and toxic status quo at her high school, a shy 16-year-old named Vivian finds inspiration from her mother's rebellious past and anonymously publishes a zine that sparks a school-wide, coming-of-rage revolution. Hell yes! Say it louder! This sounds like a rad update on Election. Adapted from the novel of the same name by Jennifer Mathieu. The film stars Hadley Robinson as Vivian, with a big ensemble cast: Lauren Tsai, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Nico Hiraga, Sydney Park, Josephine Langford, Clark Gregg, Josie Totah, Alycia Pascual-Peña, Anjelika Washington, Charlie Hall, Sabrina Haskett with Ike Barinholtz, Amy Poehler and Marcia Gay Harden. Amy Poehler is here to start a revolution — in her teen daughter’s high school. In the first trailer for her film “Moxie” that’s all scored to the classic Bikini Kill song, a group of teenage “Rebel Girls” work to disrupt the sexist norms at their high school by starting a punk rock zine.
Hadley Robinson stars as Poehler’s 16-year-old daughter in the film who tries to keep her head down to avoid pestering and harassment by the jock kids who look to rank girls by their body parts and bangability. But she’s woken up when a new student played by Alycia Pascual-Pena helps her to realize that girls in high school don’t have to put up with this stuff.
Together they’re inspired by her mother’s rebellious past to publish an anonymous underground zine called Moxie and become the center of a feminist rebellion.

Moving into the direction of filmmaking with a trio of directed episodes for Parks and Recreation, 2016’s TV Movie Dumb Prince, and her first Netflix project in Wine Country (2019), production on Amy Poehler‘s Netflix backed project began in October of 2019. Moxie, the book to film project sees an ensemble comprised of Hadley Robinson, Lauren Tsai, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Ike Barinholtz, Josephine Langford, Marcia Gay Harden and Clark Gregg. Pehler has been to Sundance on several occasions, and though we think the chances are slim for this to land, but perhaps this feminist revolution in high school music-fused item is a nice continuation of last year’s inclusion of The Glorias.…...

This was difficult, because boy oh boy has Saturday Night Live brought us a mass of talent who have since become mega-stars in movie and/or television. I had to make this list, scrap the list, edit the list, add and take away from the list, and do it all over again before landing on a final ten. I’m still not sure I have this right, because it’s also a bit subjective too. There are huge names not on this list, like Jimmy Fallon, Kristen Wiig, Chevy Chase, Tim Meadows, Chris Rock, Andy Samberg and various others. Yes, each of these names appeared on the list at one point or another, but I decided on this ten based on their memorable moments on SNL, their impact on the show, and yeah, the things they went on to do afterwards. Some are here because their runs on SNL were iconic,...

The pandemic has made desperadoes of all of us. There’s a strange kind of helplessness that sets in as home-bound film fans search for a decent movie to watch. Mind you, the medium has existed for more than a century, and its classics have never been more available than they are now. But unless you subscribe to a cinephile service like the Criterion Channel or Mubi, the good stuff isn’t curated in a way to help audiences stuck at home. And so, unsure what to watch, we settle for movies like “Desperados,” another lazy example of comedy-as-content from the Netflix machine, and among the service’s most popular performers for July.
If you liked such Netflix originals as “Ibiza” and “Wine Country,” try “Desperados,” or so the algorithm goes. Even the movie seems to have been made by computer, resulting in — to prove that leading lady Nasim Pedrad deserves a better movie.

Netflix is no stranger to underrated and overlooked comedies. The addition of films like Sex Drive, Wine Country and Sleeping With Other People prove that there’s plenty for comedy fans to watch if they’re willing to dig for lesser-known but utterly hilarious content. One such underrated flick has been making its way up the service’s Top 10 list over the past 24 hours, and it’s well worth checking out if you’re a Seth Rogen fan.
After dropping on June 1st, the 2009 comedy Observe and Report took very little time to garner plenty of attention. It currently sits at #9 on the Top 10 Movies list, and while this occasionally mean-spirited film might be an acquired taste, it’s a hell of a good time if you can deal with its darker elements.

This year's Golden Globes just happened, but we're already looking forward to the annual ceremony in 2021. Why? Because our favorite comedy pair Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are set to host! That's right, the Saturday Night Live and Wine Country stars are hitting the Golden Globes stage again, and it's sure to be a blast. "There's no denying that Tina and Amy's comedic chemistry is infectious," Lorenzo Soria, Hollywood Foreign Press Association president, said in a statement. "We can't wait to see the dynamic duo return to the Golden Globes stage."
Fey and Poehler co-hosted the coveted award show three years in a row, from 2013 to 2015. They were widely praised for their onstage quips, witty jokes, and electric dynamic. The ceremony was subsequently hosted by Jimmy Fallon in 2017, Seth Meyers in 2018, and Ricky Gervais, who was front and center in 2016, as well as this year's show where he delivered a rather unforgettable monologue.

Few casting directors have inspired as many mythic stories as Allison Jones, tall tales about the stars she plucked from obscurity, real teenagers suddenly turned into real actors, entire ensembles spliced together by seeming alchemy. With Jones, however, those starry-eyed stories are something else entirely: all true.
You know Jones’ work even if you don’t know her name, from basically building the Judd Apatow crew from scratch to assembling the cast of the still-beloved U.S. version of “The Office.” Mostly, she knows how to find funny people, but few people understand how irrevocably linked humor and heart are quite like Jones.
Jones’ talents with younger generations have always been her signature, and for projects in need of fresh faces, there’s no one better. In recent years, she’s cast everything from “Eighth Grade” to “Booksmart,” “Lady Bird” to “Mid90s.” Need some interesting adults? Jones is still your gal: this year alone,...

Steven Soderbergh will continue to explore innovative distribution methods for his next project, “Let Them All Talk,” which has just landed at the upcoming HBO Max. The rom-com-sounding project — like “Wine Country” for film snobs? — seems suspiciously out of Soderbergh’s wheelhouse, and maybe that’s why it sounds so refreshing.
“Let Them All Talk” reunites Soderbergh with Meryl Streep, who stars in his 2019 film “The Laundromat,” which Netflix will take to the Venice and Toronto film festivals. “Let Them All Talk” will tell the story of an acclaimed author who takes a journey of self-discovery with old friends, bringing her nephew, played by Lucas Hedges, along for the trip. Hedges soon finds himself romantically involved with a fledgling literary agent, played by Gemma Chan. Candice Bergen and Dianne Wiest also star. Saturday Night Live veterans Paula Pell, John Lutz, Lorne Michaels and Seth Meyers are teaming on Mapleworth Murders, a comedic murder mystery series for Jeffrey Katzenberg and Meg Whitman’s short-form video platform Quibi. Universal TV is the studio.
Written by and starring Pell and Lutz, Mapleworth Murders centers around Abigail Mapleworth, played by Pell, a murder-mystery writer who solves homicides in her quaint small town of New Woodstream. Each episode of the comedic crime procedural will feature guest victims and suspects as we answer the bigger question of the series: why the hell are there so many murders in one small town?
Mapleworth Murders is produced by Lorne Michaels’ Broadway Video and Sethmaker Shoemeyers. Broadway Video’s Michaels and Andrew Singer executive produce with Sethmaker Shoemeyers’ Meyers and Mike Shoemaker. Hilary Marx and Jason Carden co-executive produce.
Pell wrote on SNL for 20 years and scripted Tina Fey and Amy Poehler’s feature Sisters.
