Sally Rooney recently stunned the entertainment world when in a newspaper interview, she said her experience of adapting her much-loved coming-of-age novel Normal People for the BBC and Hulu left her feeling like TV was “not a world where I belonged.” Accordingly, the in-demand writer has since said no to offers to option her third book, 2021’s Beautiful World, Where Are You. The same will be likely for her latest, Intermezzo.
Rooney’s decision was especially surprising given the TV market has been so driven by book IP, with option prices rising sharply and demand bigger than ever. In fact, around a year ago, we hear drama commissioners put out a call to TV makers. The broad message was “IP over original ideas as often as possible.” While books have long been the engine of television and film, the notion everything must come with proof of concept has shifted the dial.

Nicole Kidman may first and foremost be known as a movie star, but she also has an ever-growing television resume that includes “Hemingway & Gellhorn,” “The Undoing,” “Nine Perfect Strangers” and “Big Little Lies,” all of which received nominations at various awards shows. Her next TV project is the juicy Netflix hit “The Perfect Couple,” in which she plays romance author Greer Garrison Winbury, the mother of the groom during a wedding weekend that becomes ground zero for murder.
According to Gold Derby’s Golden Globe predictions, Kidman is in the Top 5 to receive a nomination for Best Limited/Movie Actress. That would be the Australian actress’ 16th career acting bid at the Globes (combining TV and film). Editor’s note: This story contains spoilers for Netflix’s “The Perfect Couple,” including the ending.
Like many, Jenna Lamia loves a murder mystery. But when it came time for her to adapt Elin Hilderbrand’s bestselling 2018 novel “The Perfect Couple” for Netflix, she landed on something a little different than what many viewers were likely expecting when they heard “Nicole Kidman” plus “dead body washes up on shore.”
“I’m still terrified about the tone,” showrunner and writer Lamia told IndieWire the day after the show premiered September 5. “I think it works. I have fun watching it, but it is a show that has to teach you how to watch it, because I think you see that it’s directed by Susanne Bier, who did “The Undoing” and “The Night Manager” so incredibly well. A choreographed beachside dance is hardly the opening credit sequence one would expect from a glossy Nicole Kidman murder mystery. But for director Susanne Bier (“Bird Box”), there was no other way to open “The Perfect Couple,” the six-part limited adaptation of Elin Hilderbrand’s novel.
“I’ve gotten so bored with title sequences,” Bier told IndieWire. “There was, at some point in the script, a nightmare sequence where there was a dance. I was like, ‘No, I don’t want to do that.’ But there was something about the word ‘dance’ that stayed with me, and I was like, ‘We are going to do the title sequence as a dance with everybody.’ First of all, it’s going to be really joyful and fun, but it’s also going to suggest to the audience, ‘Hey, you are allowed to laugh here. As unexpected choices go, few in recent TV memory approach the opening title sequence to The Perfect Couple.
Netflix’s six-part adaptation of Elin Hilderbrand’s Nantucket-set novel kicks off with a suspicious death on the eve of a wedding — casting doubt on every have and have-not in the deceased’s orbit. But before they get to the bottom of their murder mystery, they gotta dance! The entire ensemble, including star Nicole Kidman and the victim, spend the 45-second opener of every episode partaking in some rough and ready choreography to Meghan Trainor’s “Criminals.”
If you’ve yet to see it — and this is no spoiler — imagine one of those numbers from an Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon surf movie from the 1960s, only everybody looks like they belong to a country club with deeply problematic membership requirements. (Or just watch the embed below.) The choice is very intentional.

There are actors who like to work and actors who love to work. Nicole Kidman has always belonged in the latter group. But lately, the two-time Emmy winner’s rigorous efforts to entertain have started to backfire. People are taking issue with her performances, her projects, and the overlap in each — specifically, when it comes to TV. What began as mere observations of chance similarities have escalated in recent months to reverberating reproach. Is Kidman making too much TV? Too much bad TV? Or is she simply a victim of timing and circumstance, as all famous and assiduous thespians are at one point or another?
Solving the problem begins by recognizing there is one, and in Kidman’s near-decade of steady TV work, patterns have emerged. Many of her TV picks — starting with HBO’s “Big Little Lies” in 2017 and running through this September’s Netflix series, “The Perfect Couple” — have been book adaptations.

“The Perfect Couple” has all the makings of a prestige drama akin to the likes of “Big Little Lies” and “The Undoing”: a star-studded cast, a murder mystery that unravels the façade of an upperclass community and, of course, Nicole Kidman.
But the Elin Hilderbrand adaptation had a much different start as a network pilot, which initially went into development at Fox in 2019 as a coproduction between Fox and SideCar. It was then SideCar’s Gail Berman who emailed Jenna Lamia about the potential of coming onboard as a writer — and Lamia was immediately sold.
“I didn’t even finish reading the email — I wrote back, ‘I am definitely the writer. You do not need to send me the book. I read it last summer when it came out … I’m a huge fan — what do I have to do to convince you that I’m a writer?'” showrunner Lamia told TheWrap.

These days, television shows rarely have a theme song or even a memorable opening title sequence. If we're lucky, we get the show's title on the screen for a split second with an instrumental song. Maybe the title simply just displays on screen as the episode opens or after a cold open. Unfortunately, theme songs with clips of the cast and their names are mostly a relic of the past.
However, there's one thing Netflix's The Perfect Couple does right and it's deploy a theme song and an extended opening title sequence. Grammy Award winning singer-songwriter Meghan Trainor's song "Criminals," from the deluxe edition of her 2024 album Timeless, acts as the limited series' theme song for all six episodes. It's the centerpiece of the cast's dance sequence.

Set in Nantucket, “The Perfect Couple” portrays a rarefied, 1% version of America in which people have staff and use “summer” as a verb. Which is precisely why director Susanne Bier turned down the offer to direct Netflix’s adapt tion of Elin Hilderbrand’s novel when producer Gail Berman first approached her.
“It’s not my world,” says Bier, the Danish director whose films “After the Wedding” and “In a Better World” were nominated for Oscars, and who won a directing Emmy for the 2016 Tom Hiddleston spy thriller “The Night Manager.”
Berman and screenwriter Jenna Lamia persuaded Bier to change her mind. With the show set to start shooting in a few months and no cast attached, the director wasted no time reaching out to Nicole Kidman. They’d worked together on the HBO limited series “The Undoing,” and now she offered her the role of moneyed matriarch Greer Garrison Winbury.

On the impeccably white sandy beaches of Nantucket, the wedding of the year is about to happen. Amelia Sacks (Eve Hewson) is preparing to marry Benji Winbury (Billy Howle), the son of the glamorous and monied Winbury family, headed by icy matriarch Greer (Nicole Kidman.) A famous novelist with cash to spare, she doesn’t approve of her son’s fiance. But before the festivities can begin, a body is discovered on the beach. In a wedding party full of people with their own secrets, it falls upon Nantucket’s chief of police, Dan Carter (Michael Beach), to investigate.
It’s surprising that it’s taken this long for someone to adapt an Elin Hilderbrand novel into a binge-ready TV series. Known as “the Queen of the beach reads,” Hilderbrand’s Nantucket-set sagas are loaded with sex, scandals, rich people problems and interior decor porn that would put Nancy Meyers to shame.

The good news about The Perfect Couple, Netflix’s adaptation of Elin Hilderbrand’s novel about a death at a wedding weekend, is that the finale is a blast.
The pacing is zippy. The solution is satisfying — hard to guess in the moment, yet perfectly logical in retrospect. And the tone hits a wickedly funny groove as the starry cast, finally liberated from the obligation to play their characters’ cards close to the chest, dive headlong into snark, cruelty or heretofore undiscovered levels of Dgaf.
Alas, the bad news about The Perfect Couple is … most of the rest of it. Though it’s not an especially long watch, at just under six hours, the road leading up to that ending feels so interminable that I cannot, in clear conscience, recommend anyone take this journey just for the destination.
Besides, huge swaths of the series feel repurposed from better series you may have seen already.

Netflix’s latest limited series, “The Perfect Couple,” is set to premiere on September 5. The six-episode murder mystery based on Elin Hilderbrand’s novel centers around a wedding on Nantucket that goes wrong when a body is found on the beach.
Starring Nicole Kidman and Liev Schreiber, the story follows Meghann Fahy’s character Amelia Sacks as she plans to marry into one of the town’s wealthiest families. However, her wedding plans take a turn when someone is discovered dead during the ceremony. Kidman plays Greer Garrison Winbury, the formidable mother-in-law who organized every detail of the wedding.
When the investigation begins after the discovery, it reveals that nearly everyone involved may have had reasons to commit murder. This raises the question of whether anyone can truly get away with the crime. Emmy award-winning director Susanne Bier, known for shows like “The Night Manager” and “The Undoing,” guides the production.

The trailer (watch it below) swirls around the wealthy Winbury family, headed by novelist Greer (Kidman) and her husband, Tag (Liev Schreiber), as they prepare for the wedding of their son Benji (Billy Howle) to Amelia Sacks (Eve Hewson). Celebrated actress Nicole Kidman has expressed interest in exploring intense horror genres in future film projects. In a recent interview with L’Officiel USA magazine, the 57-year-old Oscar winner said she wants to take on more frightening roles. “I’ve not done classic horror yet. Hardcore horror,” Kidman stated. “I’m putting it out there, because I watch hardcore horror.”
Kidman is known for diverse performances in movies across different genres. She has starred in psychological thrillers like The Others and Stoker. However, she has yet to perform in mainstream horror films. The actress said she is a fan of director Ti West, who makes scary movies like X, Pearl, and MaXXXine. Kidman also wants to potentially work with Australian filmmaker James Wan, best known for horror films, on a terrifying project.
While Kidman has starred in big-budget superhero movies like Batman Forever and Aquaman, she said those decisions were not driven by money.

When The Night Manager’s second season arrives, probably around the middle of next year, its previous award-winning director will not have her name on the credits.
Oscar winner Susanne Bier helmed the first season into a hit that debuted on the BBC and was sold to more than 180 countries. Stars Olivia Colman and Tom Hiddleston are set to reprise their roles but the director will be Georgi Banks-Davies.
Bier told The Sunday Times newspaper that, although she enjoys the challenge of making TV series (she also directed The Undoing and the forthcoming Netflix drama The Perfect Couple), she did not want to sign up for season two of adaptation of the John le Carre novel. She said:
“I’ve never done the second season of anything. I guess I’d feel, ‘How do I do this differently,’ which is what I’d be scared of — but not in a good way.

Nicole Kidman leads the novel adaptation, based on Elin Hilderbrand’s bestseller, as matriarch Greer Winbury whose son is getting married… only to find someone in the wedding party dead on the big day.
Jenna Lamia is the writer and showrunner, with Susanne Bier directing. Bier previously worked with Kidman in another novel adaptation “The Undoing” (2020), and also directed the series “The Night Manager” (2016) and “The First Lady” (2022), plus films “Brothers” (2004), “After the Wedding” (2006), “In a Better World” (2010), and “Bird Box” (2018).

Prime Video on Monday unveiled teaser footage, plot details and an Oct. 10 launch date for “Citadel: Diana,” the hotly anticipated spy show starring Matilda De Angelis (“The Undoing”) that is part of the “Citadel” franchise.
Details of “Citadel: Diana” – which marks the streamer’s most ambitious Italian original to date – were unveiled during a gala evening presentation of Prime Video’s Italian slate held in the palatial Villa Miani on a hill overlooking the Eternal City.
The six-episode series is set in a near-future Milan, in 2030, where eight years earlier the independent global spy agency Citadel was wiped out by Manticore, the powerful enemy syndicate that manipulates the world from the shadows. Since then, Diana Cavalieri (De Angelis) – who is an undercover Citadel agent – is alone, “trapped behind enemy lines as a mole in Manticore,” as the provided synopsis puts it.

Since “Big Little Lies,” Emmy and Oscar winner Nicole Kidman has become the undisputed queen of limited series adaptations of best-selling beach reads. Now, she’s back in the genre with “The Perfect Couple,” her first limited series for Netflix — and her first adaptation of a novel by the queen of beach reads, Elin Hilderbrand. Netflix released a teaser trailer for the six-episode limited series on Thursday, along with a link to a thematically appropriate Zola-esque wedding website.
Based on Hilderbrand’s 2018 murder mystery, “The Perfect Couple” is a story about wealth, power, and family. Here’s how Netflix describes it: “Amelia Sacks (Eve Hewson) is about to marry into one of the wealthiest families on Nantucket. Her disapproving future mother-in-law, famous novelist Greer Garrison Winbury (Kidman), has spared no expense in planning what promises to be the premiere wedding of the season — until a body turns up on the beach.

There are plenty of things that could ruin a beautiful Nantucket wedding weekend. A dead body washing up on the shore? That probably tops the list.
Based on the book by Elin Hilderbrand, the six-episode Netflix limited series The Perfect Couple (which releases Thursday, Sept. 5) follows Amelia Sacks (Bad Sisters’ Eve Hewson), a woman who’s about to marry into one of the wealthiest families on Nantucket. “Her disapproving future mother-in-law, famous novelist Greer Garrison Winbury (Nicole Kidman), has spared no expense in planning what promises to be the premiere wedding of the season — until a body turns up on the beach,...

Hugh Grant has spoken out against the closure of his local Picturehouse Cinema in southwest London on the eve of screens going black at the venue which has been home to a cinema theater for nearly one hundred years.
Picturehouse, the UK boutique cinema arm of ailing global exhibitor Cineworld, announced the closure on July 11 of its Fulham Road cinema theater, last month.
Grant, who lives close to the cinema theater and is regularly captured by paparazzi whizzing about the area on his Vespa, lamented the move.
“Fulham Rd cinema closing after 94 years. Strangely unbearable. Let’s all sit at home and watch « content » on « streaming ». While scrolling. Miserable face emoji,” the Wonka and Love Actually star wrote on his @HackedOffHugh X account.
