Jurassic World Rebirth's Mutant Dinosaur Has An Official (And Ridiculous) Name
Image
Universal Pictures didn't waste a lot of time reviving the "Jurassic" franchise following the release of 2022's "Jurassic World Dominion," which was billed as something of a conclusion at the time. While that may have finished a trilogy, we are indeed getting more dinosaurs on the big screen. This summer will see the release of director Gareth Edwards' "Jurassic World Rebirth," which will feature new dinosaurs in a new location with entirely new characters. And now we know just a little bit more about one key dino in the movie ... and it raises some questions.

The folks at Empire Magazine recently revealed two different covers for the latest issue, both of which are focused on "Jurassic World Rebirth." One of them features Scarlett Johansson's Zora Bennett, while the other features an artistic rendering by Tim McDonagh of the mysterious mutant dinosaur that was featured in the first "Rebirth" trailer.

'Hit Man' Star Adria Arjona Responds to Wonder Woman Fan-Casting
Image
A fan-favorite choice for the role of Wonder Woman in James Gunn’s slowly emerging Dcu has expressed interest in joining the comic book movie franchise as the Amazonian superhero. At present, little is known about Gunn and his DC Studios co-ceo Peter Safran’s plans for Wonder Woman, with the iconic hero glimpsed in animated form in the Creature Commandos series and a prequel series titled Paradise Lost reportedly in the works.

The lack of insight into their ideas includes a total lack of knowing who will play Wonder Woman and thus take over from Gal Gadot when the character does make her Dcu debut. Well, one fan-casting favorite, Hit Man star Adria Arjona, has now expressed interest in the coveted role. Footage shared by YouTuber and X/Twitter user @yara_wayne finds Arjona being asked about the potential of her playing Wonder Woman, to which she responds with...

Michael Bay's First Documentary Was So Dangerous To Shoot He Wasn't Allowed On Set [SXSW]
Image
Few directors are as devoid of subtlety as Michael Bay. He's a filmmaker who can turn any type of scene into an action scene and often films quieter moments like he's shooting a movie's climax. But while Bay has crafted plenty of spectacular action scenes in the past, his latest film might be his most audacious and impressive work to date. It was also extremely dangerous to shoot, so much so that Bay was legally unable to be anywhere near the set while the cameras were rolling.

When you hear the words "A documentary by Michael Bay," many thoughts come to mind. However, upon watching "We Are Storror," you come to realize that, of course, death-defying parkour daredevils who perform outlandish stunts on the regular would be the subject that captured Bay's attention.

There was just one tiny problem. As a member of the Directors Guild of America, Bay was...

Liv Tyler, Bruce Willis, and Ben Affleck in Armageddon (1998)
Michael Bay | “No one can greenlight anything,” the director says; also, he’s made a documentary about parkour
Liv Tyler, Bruce Willis, and Ben Affleck in Armageddon (1998)
Armageddon director Michael Bay has reflected on how difficult it is to get original films made in Hollywood as he promotes his documentary about parkour, We Are Storror.

If even a major Hollywood director like Michael Bay struggles to find support for an original film idea, then the rest of the industry must be seriously struggling. Yet according to the action filmmaker himself, “No one can greenlight anything anymore,” with the modern mainstream filmmaking landscape being “very different” from the 1990s, when he broke through with such films as Bad Boys, The Rock and Armageddon.

Bay made the observation in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, in which he talked about his new documentary, We Are Storror (more about that shortly). When asked about his filmmaking outside major franchises like Transformers, Bay suggested that he’d struggle to get his 1998 disaster action thriller Armageddon through the Hollywood studio today.

‘We Are Storror’ Review: In Michael Bay’s Hands, the Parkour Team Comes Off Looking Like Real-World Action Heroes
Image
For 15 years, the best thing the ballsy U.K.-based parkour team known as Storror could say for a successful stunt — whether jumping off a cliff together or leaping between tall buildings for videos they uploaded to YouTube — was that none of them had died in the process. But now, with a wealth of law-breaking footage to their name, the seven-member posse has not only their lives to show for it, but also a feature-length Michael Bay movie to commemorate their exploits.

In “We Are Storror,” the bombastic auteur (who first engaged the pro parkour group for spectacular sequences in his 2019 film “6 Underground”) assembles a career-spanning supercut in their honor. Bay insists he was far from the action at all times, coming in only at the end to sift through and edit what Storror had documented on their own. But there’s no denying the influence Bay’s splashy...

Michael Bay’s Thrilling Yet Emotional Parkour Doc ‘We Are Storror’ Receives Howling Standing Ovation at SXSW
Image
Michael Bay’s “We Are Storror” begins with a warning on screen: “Don’t attempt anything you see here.”

It’s safe to say the audience at SXSW, the first to see the documentary on a big screen on March 8, was extremely impressed and a little bit scared, but definitely not jumping to attempt any of the wild stunts front and center in the documentary, which follows parkour team Storror.

Instead of wires, green screens and editing tricks that Bay fans are used to, this time, it’s all real. Making his debut as a feature documentary director at the film and television festival, Bay received a loud applause — and audience members chanting his name — when introducing the movie. During the screening, the audience squirmed in their seats, gasping many times at the jaw-dropping stunts and quite shocking injuries that occurred, and ultimately, standing to applaud at the end as...

‘We Are Storror’ Review: Michael Bay’s Parkour Doc Is Literally Death-Defying
Image
“To live is to die. To die is to live. To avoid death is to avoid living.” — Sunday Adelaj.

Michael Bay’s debut documentary, “We Are Storror,” is a pulse-pounding immersion into extreme thrills. The focus? A UK parkour troupe known as Storror with 10+ million subscribers on YouTube. Storror collaborated with Bay on Netflix’s “6 Underground” to stunt on famous landmarks, and now Bay’s bringing their insane story to South by Southwest. You’ll test your fear of heights, marvel at parkour precision, and learn why Storror wages their lives while bleeding passion. It’s an adrenaline ride to remember, cracking the psyche of professional daredevils.

“We Are Storror” examines the poster children for “living on the edge.” Seven individuals—two pairs of brothers and three mates—globetrot to exotic destinations and film death-defying parkour brilliance. Bay doesn’t ignore the Peter Pan Syndrome of it all, charting...

Michael Bay and James Cameron Bemoan State of Industry: ‘No One Can Greenlight Anything Anymore’
Image
Things have gotten so bad in Hollywood that even Michael Bay is moving into independent filmmaking. At SXSW 2025, the “Transformers” director will be unveiling his latest work, “We Are Storror,” a documentary revolving around a group of free-running athletes who engage in parkour around the world and have millions of views on YouTube. Why take a break from huge action spectacles like “6 Underground” and “Ambulance?” To hear Bay explain, it seems that Hollywood just can’t keep up with his pace.

“I just had a conference call with Jim Cameron and we were both commiserating about Hollywood,” he said in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “No one can greenlight anything anymore. It’s just so slow. It’s a very different business.”

When Bay’s career took off in the 1990s, the system seemed to encourage expediency rather than draw development out as it does today. He recalled how with “Armageddon,...

How Michael Bay Made His Death-Defying Parkour Documentary ‘We Are Storror’: ‘I Could Not Condone Anything They Were Doing’
Image
Michael Bay had a big problem.

During the height of Covid in 2020, he got a text from Drew Taylor, one of the members of Storror, the seven-person group of U.K. parkour artists whose videos of their breathtakingly risky stunts jumping across rooftops from London to Hong Kong have amassed more than 3 billion views on YouTube since 2010. The group’s global reputation led Bay to hire Storror for his 2019 action film “6 Underground,” and now Taylor was asking Bay about making a documentary with them about their lives.

It was an irresistible idea. “Imagine you’re a basketball player in the NBA, and every single basket you throw up, you have to shoot them all,” Bay tells Variety. “Or a [professional] baseball player, and you’ve got to hit every single ball — because if you strike out, you’re dead. That’s the level that they play.” Bay admired Storror not...

The Electric State Is Netflix's Most Expensive Movie Ever (And The Russos' Worst)
Image
Anthony and Joe Russo's new film "The Electric State" will arrive on Netflix on March 14, 2025 (you can watch the trailer here), and it comes with a lot of baggage. Adapted from a picture novel by Swedish artist Simon Stålenhag, "The Electric State" takes place in an alternate dystopian version of 1990s American where corporate mascots wander the landscape as intelligent robots. There was a recently-failed robot uprising, and now all the robotic mascots now wander a wasted, walled-off landscape, exiled from humanity. Millie Bobbie Brown plays Michelle, a young woman who has to venture into the robot wasteland in search of her long-lost brother.

The Russo brothers are perhaps best known for the work within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as they oversaw the blockbusters "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," "Captain America: Civil War," "Avengers: Infinity War," and "Avengers: Endgame," one of the most successful films of all time. "The Electric State...

Michael Bay is universally recognized for his huge passion for blowing things off in his films in a theatrical way. In real life, the filmmaker seems to have gotten himself into quite an adventure.

In a new video on his Instagram account, the Transformers filmmaker claimed he was arrested for trespassing at the Vatican, which is the Roman Catholic Church headquarters, an independent state in Europe, surrounded by Rome, Italy. The filmmaker has all his followers guessing after his short clip, where he seemingly documented his trip to the Vatican and breaking in. At the same time, the internet believes there's more to the story.

“They’re taking me to prison”: Did Michael Bay Get Arrested for Breaking Into the Vatican?

Michael Bay just went crazy and broke into the Vatican, according to a video he posted online of himself. He wasn’t allowed to just walk free and later revealed in the video that he turned himself in to the Vatican police who arrived there. It is hard to figure out if it’s part of Bay’s crazy stunts or a promotion for an upcoming film.

Jurassic World Rebirth Trailer: Welcome To A New Era Of The Jurassic Franchise
Image
It's been just two and a half years since "Jurassic World Dominion" brought the latest "Jurassic" trilogy to a close, but it's already time for a new era full of dinosaurs and humans trying to co-exist. Universal Pictures has now revealed the first trailer for this summer's "Jurassic World Rebirth." As the title implies, this is viewed as a fresh start for the franchise, complete with new human characters and a new director -- and yes, new dinosaurs. You can watch the trailer for yourself above.

The director in question is Gareth Edwards of "Godzilla" and "Rogue One" fame, who seems perfect for the "Jurassic" franchise. Noticeably absent are any familiar faces, including Chris Pratt's Owen Grady or Sam Neill's Alan Grant. Instead, Universal has lined up a new, all-star cast led by Scarlett Johansson ("Black Widow") as Zora Bennett. Even though there is a lot of new stuff on the table here,...

Adria Arjona Reflects on Her Breakout Year: ‘These Directors Gave Me No Limitations’
Image
How busy has 2024 been for actress Adria Arjona? She graciously chatted with IndieWire from the airport, right before a recent flight. “It’s the only time where I can kind of have a second,” she said, sheepishly.

While the actress became a bonafide star-to-watch via a breadth of projects over the years, from “6 Underground” to “Father of the Bride” and “Andor,” Arjona recently achieved a new level of success as the romantic lead opposite Glen Powell (another 2024 breakout) in Richard Linklater’s “Hit Man.”

What followed the inventive Netflix rom-com of the summer was a standout role in Zoe Kravitz’s directorial debut “Blink Twice,” and now the opportunity to star and produce indie dramedy “Los Frikis,” in which she plays nurse to a group of youths in 1991 Cuba, who purposefully injected themselves with HIV in order to escape poverty by entering a government-run treatment home. Abu Dhabi Film Commission Raises Its New Rebate to Up to 50% of Qualified Production Spend
Image
Abu Dhabi is stepping up efforts to lure more film and TV shoots to the United Arab Emirates’ capital by enhancing its new rebate, which is now set to reach up to 50% of qualified below-the-line spend starting in January.

After becoming a prime Middle East hub for Hollywood and Bollywood productions over the past decade, the Abu Dhabi Film Commission in October announced they were upping their previous 30% rebate to more than 35%. Now they have unveiled how, on top of the rebate’s new 35% baseline, productions can reach a total rebate of 50% on their principal photography and post-production costs by meeting new criteria.

These include featuring the UAE’s national history, culture and identity in the productions’ storylines; carrying out full post-production work in Abu Dhabi; and doing the main unit production of a feature film in Abu Dhabi and/or filming an entire TV series in the emirate.

Director Kyle Mooney is behind A24's newest sci-fi comedy, with the film following a group of friends who have to survive a robot apocalypse after the Y2K computer bug turns out to be real. “I hate Ryan Reynolds”: Fans Talk About the Most Overrated Stars in Hollywood and Some of the Picks Are Just Terrible

Fans picked Deadpool & Wolverine star Ryan Reynolds as well as Adam Sandler as some of the most overrated stars in Hollywood. In a vox pop by a popular page, common folk in the UK were asked about who they think are the most overrated stars in Hollywood, and Reynolds, Sandler, and Timothée Chalamet seemed to dominate the list.

While some members of the list may deserve it, others such as Chalamet have proved why they are at the top. Even actors like Adam Sandler and Dwayne Johnson, who were featured in the list, seem to be taking on roles that are not of their usual style. The jury is still out, however, on these stars.

Bad Boys Will Smith & Michael Bay Reunite for Netflix's Fast and Loose
Image
Will Smith is reuniting with Bad Boys director Michael Bay, nearly 30 years after the first film was released, for a brand-new action flick on Netflix. Smith has slowly been ramping up his movie schedule as of late, most recently starring in the fourth Bad Boys film, Ride or Die. But this marks Smith's first collaboration with Bay since 2003's Bad Boys II, a long-awaited reunion that comes at just the right time in their careers.

Deadline reports that Will Smith is joining Michael Bay's upcoming Netflix blockbuster Fast and Loose in the lead role. It's unclear when the film will be in production, but the report adds that it is expected to be the next project in their pipeline. After showing no signs of wear earlier this year, Smith finds his next comeback role after the Oscars fiasco. Both Smith and Bay have worked with Netflix before, so it's a match made in action heaven.

Michael Bay in Talks to Direct Will Smith in Netflix Action Movie ‘Fast and Loose’
Image
Michael Bay is in talks to direct Will Smith in the Netflix action film Fast and Loose, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

Fast and Loose focuses on a crime boss who loses his memory after an attack and gradually learns that he was leading a double life as a CIA agent. Jon Hoeber, Erich Hoeber, Chris Bremner and Eric Pearson worked on the screenplay. Jon and Erich Hoeber wrote the original script after selling their pitch to Netflix.

The movie has been in the works since before Smith’s infamous slap of Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars ceremony. THR previously reported that David Leitch had exited the project the week before the fated Academy Awards telecast to start work on The Fall Guy, the Ryan Gosling-Emily Blunt action-comedy feature that Universal released in May.

Producers for Fast and Loose include Leitch and Kelly McCormick for 87North, along with Smith.

Will Smith And Michael Bay Eyeing Reunion On Netflix Action Pic ‘Fast And Loose’
Image
Exclusive: Following the success of Bad Boys: Ride or Die, Will Smith is looking to reunite in a big way with the director who helped him launch the Bad Boys franchise nearly 30 years ago. While a deal isn’t officially closed, sources tell Deadline that Michael Bay is in final negotiations to direct the Netflix action pic Fast and Loose, which will star Smith. Sources add that while a start date isn’t official, the film would likely be the next project for both A-listers.

Deadline recently broke the news Smith that would be dropping out of the thriller Sugar Bandits, which was potentially lining up as his next project; once he parted ways with that film, the town was abuzz over what Smith might do next.

Fast and Loose follows a man who wakes up in Tijuana with no memories. As he pieces together his past, he learns he...

Ryan Reynolds’ Total Earnings From Deadpool Franchise Could Have Been Massive if He Wasn’t Such a Kind Soul
Image
Ryan Reynolds has cemented his place as one of Hollywood’s most bankable stars, and the Deadpool franchise is at the heart of his meteoric success. The Canadian actor, known for his sharp wit and infectious charm, took a huge financial risk when he signed on to star in Deadpool with a relatively low salary compared to his blockbuster status. But in true Deadpool fashion, Reynolds proved that his earnings could have been astronomical if he hadn’t chosen to take a different approach.

Deadpool (2016): The Game Changer Credits: Ryan Reynolds in Deadpool & Wolverine / Walt Disney Studios

The first Deadpool movie, released in 2016, was a gamble for both 20th Century Studios and Ryan Reynolds. With a modest budget of $58 million, the studio wasn’t expecting the film to smash box-office records, but that’s exactly what it did. Deadpool earned over $780 million worldwide, becoming one of the highest-grossing R-rated films ever,...

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Arjona will play "a mother who falls back on a particular set of skills in order to protect her loved ones after she runs afoul of a threat that has escaped a secret military base." Additional details are being kept under wraps, although sources describe it as a "gonzo action horror thriller" in line with Wingard's earlier movies instead of his Monsterverse movies. Wingard is writing the script with frequent collaborator Simon Barrett. The duo previously collaborated on Youre Next and The Guest. Beta Film, Robert Lantos Epic ‘Rise of the Raven’ Set to Premiere at Mipcom Cannes, Drops Teaser (Exclusive)
Image
“Rise of the Raven,” the anticipated European event series from Beta Film, behind “Babylon Berlin” and “The Swarm,” and producer Robert Lantos, will world premiere at Cannes content trade fair Mipcom on Oct. 22.

Beta Film has shared in exclusivity with Variety a first teaser to the series, which is a bracing introduction to the scale and ambition of “Rise of the Raven’s” production values, as well as the brutality of its battles scenes as it tells in an 10-part epic the extraordinary real-life feat of Hungarian army commander Janos Hunyadi, played by discovery Gellért L. Kádár, who turned back the tide of the Ottoman Empire’s seemingly unstoppable advance into Europe.

This looks set to climax in the series as in history in 1456 when Hunyadi won a bloody Battle of Belgrade against a vast Ottoman force twice the size of his troops who were sometimes armed with just slings and patriotic fervor.

Jake Gyllenhaal's $52.3M Action Movie Lands On Netflix's Global Chart 2 Years Later
Image
Michael Bay's Ambulance ranks as the ninth most-watched film on Netflix globally for the week of August 12 18. Ambulance earned Bay's most positive reviews in years but failed to make a mark at the box office due in part to lasting effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. The film's box office failure also suggests that Jake Gyllenhaal isn't a big enough name to open a film on his own.

Ambulance starring Jake Gyllenhaal ascends to the global Netflix top 10 chart 2 years after hitting theaters. Directed by Michael Bay, Ambulance stars Gyllenhaal as Danny Sharp, a thief who finds himself on the run in a stolen ambulance with his brother, Will (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), after a bank robbery goes wrong. Despite generally positive reviews from critics, the film was a box office disappointment, grossing only $52.3 million worldwide.

Now, new data from Netflix reveals that Ambulance ranks as the ninth most popular movie on...

Mélanie Laurent and Guillaume Canet on Becoming Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI for ‘The Flood’
Image
Mélanie Laurent is Marie Antoinette and Guillaume Canet her husband Louis XVI in Italian director Gianluca Jodice’s Le Déluge (The Flood), which opened the 77th edition of the Locarno Film Festival on Wednesday night in the Swiss town’s Piazza Grande, which seats 8,000 people during the fest.

On Thursday afternoon, the two stars, along with their director, met members of the press to discuss the movie, which is set in 1792 when the two main characters and their children were arrested and imprisoned in a chateau in Paris, awaiting their trial.

THR‘s Locarno review called the movie “an intriguing palace drama chronicling the last days of France’s ultimate royal couple,” also highlighting that “nuanced performances from both Canet and Laurent help to make the famous couple more than mere caricatures.”

The stars on Thursday shared how they got into their characters and their mindset. Actress-writer-director Laurent (Inglourious Basterds,...

Why ‘Deadpool’ Writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick Were Rejected for the Job (At First)
Image
If Deadpool & Wolverine screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick have a superpower, it’s not sweating rejection.

When scores of stars turned down an offer to cameo in Zombieland, the studio was ready to give up, but Wernick insisted on a Hail Mary, and they asked star Woody Harrelson to dive into his rolodex for one more name. Two days later, Bill Murray was on set playing a zombie-fied version of himself in the movie’s most memorable sequence.

And as has been well documented, the duo — along with Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds and director Tim Miller — overcame six years of hearing the word “no” to make that movie a genre-redefining reality.

What is less known is that Reese and Wernick themselves were actually rebuffed when they initially pitched their take to Reynolds and 20th Century Fox in the fall of 2009. The pair, hot off the success of Zombieland,...

Michael Bay In Talks To Direct Netflix Barbaric Series Starring Sam Claflin And Sir Patrick Stewart
Image
What happens when you bring Bayhem to the box? It looks like we might be about to find out, folks. According to Deadline, the Bad Boys and Ambulance blockbuster filmmaker is circling the directorial hotseat on Barbaric, a new Netflix series based on Michael Moreci and Nathan Gooden's best-selling Vault comic series. What's more, Peaky Blinders star Sam Claflin and Picard himself, Sir Patrick Stewart, are attached to star in the show.

Up In The Air scribe Sheldon Turner is aboard to write the series, tantalisingly described by Deadline as "Deadpool meets Game Of Thrones" thanks to its killer combo of ultra violence and wicked humour. Set in a Medieval fantasy world, Moreci and Gooden's comics follow the adventures of cursed Barbarian Owen and his sentient alcoholic weapon Axe as they wander their magical realm, impelled to help the needy (usually in the most bloodthirsty way possible). If Netflix...

Patrick Stewart and Sam Claflin to star in a series adaptation of Barbaric with Michael Bay directing
Image
Patrick Stewart is busy sharpening his axe while Sam Claflin practices his war cries for an adaptation of the Vault comic series Barbaric. The series adaptation is preparing to engage in battle on Netflix with Michael Bay as the project’s director. In addition to his starring role, Claflin is an executive producer of the bloodthirsty series from A+E Studios and Sheldon Turner & Jennifer Klein’s studio-based 100% Productions.

Sheldon Turner is writing Barbaric, which Deadline says is a mashup of Deadpool meets Game of Thrones with over-the-top violence, limb-chopping action, and biting humor. Michael Moreci writes Barbaric with art by Nathan Gooden.

Here’s the official synopsis for Barbaric Vol. 1 from Vault:

Owen the Barbarian has been cursed to do good with what remains of his life. His bloodthirsty weapon, Axe, has become his moral compass with a drinking problem. Together, they wander the realm, foredoomed to help any who seek assistance.

The Paramount Merger Is Finally Official - And It Could Have Been So Much Worse
Image
It's finally official. After months of discussions, speculation, and close calls, Paramount has agreed to a merger with Skydance. Paramount is one of the oldest studios in Hollywood and Skydance is a major production company with close ties to the studio, having worked with it on the "Mission: Impossible" and "Terminator" franchises, among many other projects. The Paramount/Skydance merger originally looked like it was going to happen last month before the rug got pulled out. Now, the two companies have come back together to hopefully forge a more secure future in a rapidly changing entertainment business landscape.

Paramount's special committee has now unanimously approved the merger. Skydance and RedBird Capital partnered on the deal, which had to be signed off on by Paramount's controlling shareholder Shari Redstone. She owns National Amusements, which controls the majority stake of Paramount. So, what did they finally agree to, exactly? Let's get into the nitty-gritty of it all.

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F Reported Budget Sets a Ludicrous Record for the Eddie Murphy Franchise
Image
Netflix spends $150 million on Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, making it one of their highest-budgeted films. Streaming movies' success relies on viewership rather than box office revenue, so subscriber numbers and viewership will determine the film's worth. Eddie Murphy's return as Axel Foley aims to boost Netflix's subscriber engagement and prove the platform's investment is worthwhile.

Eddie Murphys return as the iconic Axel Foley in Netflixs Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F seems to be a costly affair for the streaming platform. Known to be happy spending a lot of money on some of their biggest exclusive movies, a new report has suggested that the fourth Beverly Hills Cop movie, which is released on July 3, is one of their highest.

The Beverly Hills Cop franchise was not known for having excessive budgets across its first three movies, with 1994s third installment being the most expensive at $70 million. According to Deadline,...

Adria Arjona's New Netflix Movie Makes Up For These Two Duds That Only Have 60% Combined On Rt
Image
A breakout performance in "Hit Man" has elevated Adria Arjona's career, redeeming previous critical disappointments and establishing her star credentials. Arjona's role as Madison Figueroa Masters in "Hit Man" is praised as a highlight, contrasting with her previous Netflix movies that were criticial failures. With a 97% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes, "Hit Man" showcases Arjona's ability to enhance a compelling plot, marking her path to becoming a major star.

Adria Arjona's role in Richard Linklater's Netflix movie Hit Man is a breakout performance for the 32-year-old Puerto Rican simultaneously establishing her star credentials and redeeming two previous critical disappointments. Alongside Glen Powell's charismatic protagonist, Arjona is central to the movie's success. Although Hit Man's true story narrative gives it a propulsive and compelling plot, it is largely thanks to the performances of its cast that the film has enjoyed critical acclaim.

What’s Popular on IMDb? Adria Arjona, “The Acolyte,” ‘Under Paris’
Adria Arjona at an event for 6 Underground (2019)
Hits from the weekend

Streaming movies and shows made up the majority of the top five titles this past weekend, based on traffic to their IMDb pages. That’s thanks to a trio of Netflix titles and the new Star Wars series, “The Acolyte.” In theaters, Will Smith and Martin Lawrence’s fourth installment in the Bad Boys franchise delivered Hollywood a much-needed box office win, while ‘The Watchers’—the mystery-horror film starring Dakota Fanning—drew enough interest to land in the top 10.

By the time ‘Hit Man’ dropped on Netflix, movie fans were probably well aware of who Glen Powell was, but the popularity of the comedic action film brought more IMDb users’ attention to co-star Adria Arjona and director Richard Linklater. If Arjona looked familiar to viewers, it’s likely from several supporting roles in other streaming hits like “Good Omens,” “Andor,” and ‘6 Underground’ with Ryan Reynolds.

It’s not often that directors crack the top five (or even top 10) names on IMDb, but viewers were clearly interested to know more about Richard Linklater, the versatile and irreverent director of indie films like ‘Slacker’ and ‘Dazed and Confused,’ who also found mainstream recognition with ‘School of Rock.’

Also big on Netflix were the French killer shark movie ‘Under Paris’ and the Benedict Cumberbatch miniseries “Eric,” which released all six episodes two weeks ago. Elsewhere in streaming, “The Acolyte” has had no trouble finding its audience on Disney+. According to Disney, the show drew 4.8 million viewers on its first day, making it the streamer’s biggest hit of 2024 to date. Amandla Stenberg and Dafne Keen were in the top five names on IMDb, and both will likely remain popular through the show’s first season, which ends on July 16.

What’s in store for the coming week?

Expect next weekend to be all about “The Boys,” the raunchy comic book adaptation from showrunner Eric Kripke. The first three episodes of Season 4 arrive Thursday (6/13) on Prime Video, with new episodes dropping weekly. Returning cast members Karl Urban, Antony Starr, and Erin Moriarty will likely climb IMDb’s STARmeter, but a few new supes on the scene could put some breakouts in the spotlight, such as Valorie Curry (playing Firecracker) or Susan Heyward (as Sister Sage).

In theaters, Disney and Pixar’s animated ‘Inside Out 2’ is a shoo-in to win next weekend’s box office, though it may not have the same interest on IMDb as the streaming releases. The original voice cast of emotions are returning, but it’s more likely one of the newcomers will spike in popularity, like Maya Hawke (“Stranger Things”) as Anxiety, Ayo Edibiri (“The Bear”) as Envy, or Paul Walter Houser (‘I, Tonya,’ ‘Richard Jewell’) as Embarrassment.

Bad Boys: Ride or Die Review – Out-Bayhems Michael Bay
Image
Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, the Belgian directing duo behind Bad Boys: Ride or Die, are what people are really talking about when they speak of Michael Bay. In these dark days of anonymous blockbusters with no personality or pop, it is indeed common for people to wax nostalgic about Bay, wishing that Bayhem would one day return to American screens in its full glory.

It’s a weird sentiment though, and not just because Bay hasn’t gone anywhere. But it’s strange because Bay was a byword among film fans of the 2000s and 2010s: shorthand for grotesque messes that emphasized single spectacular shots over basic visual storytelling. When people remember Michael Bay, then, they remember not the actual Bay, but rather the idea of Michael Bay: fun action, striking images, and a sense of humor.

Adil & Bilall are the real deal, purveyors of the colorful, kinetic action that people want,...
