It’s a shame that The Exorcism, co-written and directed by Joshua John Miller — the son of The Exorcist actor Jason Miller — is a sloppy and unsatisfying genre exhumation. Miller and co-author M.A. Fortin flaunted oodles of metatextual proficiency with their superb horror-comedy The Final Girls that are nowhere to be found in their sophomore feature. Miller’s direction chases New Nightmare and Scream 3 highs by seeking inspiration from supposed haunted productions like The Exorcist and Poltergeist, but behind-the-scenes perspectives are frequently and confusingly dropped like a hot potato. The Exorcism fails the prospect of a bible-verse-chanting exorcism on a horror film set, spiraling from mundanity into a third act that abandons conceptual intrigue for the most forgettable finale imaginable.

I wasn’t going to review A Creature Was Stirring. After The Sacrifice Game, There’s Something in the Barn, Nightmare on 34th Street and Santa Isn’t Real, I was pretty well played out on Christmas horror films. But then I noticed it was directed by Damien LeVeck whose other feature was The Cleansing Hour, one of the better recent paranormal investigator films., based on that I decided to give it a look.
“We just have to keep this up until it breaks” Faith tells her daughter Charm, only to be met with the reply “The blizzard or me?” Looking at the assortment of syringes, pills and a rectal thermometer laid out on the kitchen counter that response seemed anything but snarky.
Then she leads her upstairs to her room and locks her in,...

The differences between Damien LeVeck’s sophomore effort A Creature Was Stirring and his feature debut The Cleansing Hour are staggering. His instincts are ironclad in the cleanly polished and despicable exorcism thriller that stands as one of Shudder’s best original releases in 2020. Unfortunately, A Creature Was Stirring doesn’t replicate the same accomplished approach as an ambitious yet scattershot blast of subgenres. Psychological chills, creature thrills, and family dysfunction become this unfocused commentary on the looming specter of addiction. LeVeck takes risk after risk — the filmmaker’s fearlessness should not be ignored — but there’s a befuddling all-over-the-place-ness that does not play into the film’s favor.

Haunted Ulster Live is part homage to, and part parody of the BBC’s infamous Ghostwatch. For those unfamiliar with it, it was a 1992 Halloween special hosted by Michael Parkinson and presented as a live broadcast from a haunted house. Unfortunately, many viewers didn’t know it wasn’t the real thing and the BBC ended up fielding over 1,000,000 from concerned viewers. An early entry in the mockumentary/found footage genre it’s also the precursor of films like Kild TV, Deadstream, and The Cleansing Hour.

Many horror tales like "Late Night with the Devil" warn against succumbing to the bright, blinding spotlights of fame, but few mirror its structure. "Ghostwatch," "Wnuf Halloween Special," or the "Public Television of the Dead" episode of Shudder's "Creepshow" are comparison points, as Cameron and Colin Cairnes unleash evils upon a nightly talk show's most important episode. It's a period throwback to 1970s horror vibes with mentions of Vincent Price or Ed and Lorraine Warren (although they've made a comeback thanks to James Wan) that eerily recreates the experience of being on a bustling Sweeps Week set. Expect something more cable-access creepy than ratings-breaking scary, taking its time through interview segments before the devil raises all kinds of hell in front of a live studio audience.

As I watched 9 Bullets the plot seemed overly familiar, it wasn’t billed as a remake of anything but it seemed very familiar. Then it hit me, Gloria, a film John Cassavetes made in 1980, and remade by Sidney Lumet in 1999. Both involve a tough woman who has to go on the run with a young boy wanted by the mobsters who killed his parents. In Gloria he has a book with incriminating information, in this film, it’s a laptop. In both films, the mob boss is her ex and as a name, Gypsy isn’t that far from Gloria either.
I wasn’t surprised to see that it was one of a slew of films writer/director Gigi Gaston cited as an influence on 9 Bullets.

The world of James Bond is hitting the streaming world a lot sooner than you’d think.
Amazon’s Prime Video has greenlit its first TV show based on the iconic British spy with “007’s Road to a Million,” a Bond-style spin on a race around the world.
The eight-part series will be produced by Britain’s 72 Films and Bond guardians and producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, along with MGM Television.
Sources tell Variety that the project has been in the works at Prime Video for around four years, long before the MGM deal was finalized, and it sits separately to any shows that are yet to come out of the pact. The e-commerce giant closed its $8.5 billion deal for MGM last week, with the James Bond franchise believed to be a powerful driving force behind the acquisition.

Transatlantic production powerhouse Sister has hired Amazon Studios scripted executive Lydia Hampson as executive producer. The company has also struck a first-look deal with Hampson and Amazon Studios U.K.
Hampson most recently served as the head of U.K. scripted for Amazon Studios. She’s best known for having produced the hit BBC Three comedy “Fleabag” — which turned creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge into a household name — when she was an executive producer at All3Media-backed production company Two Brothers Pictures.
At Sister — the indie studio set up by Jane Featherstone, Stacey Snider and Elisabeth Murdoch — Hampson’s first project will be “The Following Events are Based on a Pack of Lies,” which she’ll join as an executive producer, working alongside Sister’s joint head of scripted and executive producer Naomi de Pear (“This Is Going to Hurt”) and director of development Alice Tyler.

Afternoon International Insiders. The team is in Berlin and EFM is hotting up. We’ve got the latest from Germany and more so read on.
EFM Reaches New Heights Despite Virtual Format
Record-breaking: It has been a strong start to this year’s virtual European Film Market. Last night, the Tom Hanks comedy A Man Called Otto was picked up by Sony in a glossy $60M world rights deal following a heated bidding war that lasted several days. Andreas and Mike Fleming Junior had the scoop. That figure was a record for the EFM, eclipsing last year’s $55M pact Netflix made for The Pale Blue Eye. Big big numbers.
Deal-making: Don’t expect EFM action to end there. A lot more high-profile packages have been unveiled across the last week, and we’re expecting more eye-catching deals to close over Zoom in the coming days. Hot projects on offer...

One of the biggest productions to hit the U.K. in years is gearing up to film outside London next spring, Variety can reveal.
Season 2 of Amazon Prime Video’s “Lord of the Rings,” which grabbed international headlines when the streaming player moved locations from New Zealand to the U.K., has set its first filming locations. The move — which was a major upset for the New Zealand production sector — is especially momentous given the U.K relocation marks the first time any of the modern “Lord of the Rings” live-action, on-screen projects have been produced outside of New Zealand, including “The Hobbit” trilogy.

Currently streaming on Shudder, The Cleansing Hour is centered around an online exorcist (Ryan Guzman) who gets more than he bargained for when he comes face to face with a real demon during one of his sham exorcism shows. Caught in the middle is Lane (played by Alix Angelis), an aspiring actress who ends up being an unwilling host to the malevolent force, and the clock is ticking to save her soul and banish the demonic force from her body forever before it’s too late.
Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to speak with Angelis about her experiences working on The Cleansing Hour, and she discussed collaborating with the film’ director, Damien LeVeck, as well as the physical challenges that came with taking on the role of a woman possessed by pure evil.
