When Tye Sheridan was just 11 years old, something crazy happened: Terrence Malick came looking for him.

Specifically, the beloved American auteur wanted to cast a trio of young brothers for his “The Tree of Life,” co-starring Brad Pitt and Jessica Chastain. The vast majority of kids Malick and his team saw were — like Texas native Sheridan — totally green to this acting thing.

Sixteen years later, Sheridan isn’t green anymore. The actor is only continuing to build out his resume, adding producing into the mix with his most recent feature film, Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire’s “Asphalt City,” which debuted at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival under the title “Black Flies.”

Still, ask Sheridan about where his initial love of moviemaking came from, and it’s like he’s right back on Malick’s set. “I was randomly cast in the film. They recruited 10,000 kids in the state of Texas to come and audition.

Austin Archer, an actor, musician, comedian, podcaster and political commentator with over 1.3 million TikTok followers, has been cast in “Horizon,” Kevin Costner’s epic Western which is comprised of four films, Variety can confirm.

Archer has already shot his scenes for the first and second film.

“Horizon” is Costner’s first directorial effort since 2003’s “Open Range.” The film series is slated to span 15 years on the Western frontier, focusing on Indigenous groups and settlers. Costner’s intention is for the films to come out every three months.

“They’re all different films that all connect, so you’re watching a saga of these storylines that are happening,” Costner told Variety.

In addition to his social media presence, Archer has appeared in films like 2020’s “The Night Clerk” and TV series like David Fincher’s “Mindhunter.”

Actor Tye Sheridan is wearing a different hat with his new media-tech startup — which he claims will let indie filmmakers deliver blockbuster-level VFX on a fraction of the budget.

Sheridan (above right) co-founded Wonder Dynamics with visual-effects artist Nikola Todorovic (above left). Over the last four years, the duo have been quietly experimenting with using artificial intelligence and machine learning to create interactive video applications. Now Wonder Dynamics is gearing up to introduce a new AI production tool that they promise will let independent artists produce dazzling VFX and CGI animations for far less than is required today.

“It breaks down the barriers to achieving your wildest vision,” Sheridan told Variety. “A lot of times people dream up this story but it’s not possible to make because it would cost $200 million. AI can democratize VFX.”

“Knives Out” star Ana de Armas is set to star with Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans in the next film from “Avengers: Endgame” directors Anthony and Joe Russo — a big-budgeted spy and espionage thriller called “The Gray Man” that the brothers will direct at Netflix. Its budget could exceed $200 million, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.

Joe Russo wrote the script — with a polish by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely — based on the book and series “The Gray Man” by Mark Greaney.

“The Gray Man” follows Court Gentry (Gosling), a legend in the covert realm, who is an expert at completing any lethal task and then disappearing. But he’s now being pursued by a former CIA colleague of his, Lloyd Hansen (Evans), once they feel that Gentry has outlived his usefulness.

The Russo Brothers’ Agbo will produce the film, brothers and Mike Larocca listed as producers...

Exclusive: Ana De Armas is set to star opposite Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans in Joe and Anthony Russo’s big-budget action thriller The Gray Man for Netflix. The Russos have been developing the project for some time at Sony, and when the package went back on the market over the summer, Netflix was quick to acquire it and set Gosling and Evans to star. The film will be the biggest-budget film in Netflix’s history on the feature side.

The Russos penned the script with a recent polish by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. The Russos along with Mike Larocca will produce on behalf of Agbo along with Joe Roth, Jeff Kirschenbaum and Chris Castaldi through their Roth Kirschenbaum banner.

The Gray Man is the debut novel by Mark Greaney, published in 2009 by Jove Books. It also is the first novel to feature the Gray Man, freelance assassin and former CIA operative Court Gentry.

Mad About You star Helen Hunt has been added to the cast of Starz series Blindspotting.

Hunt, who also recently starred in BBC drama World on Fire and features I See You and The Night Clerk, will play Rainey, mother to Rafael Casal’s Miles in the adaptation of Casal and Daveed Diggs feature film.

“It is such an honor to have Helen Hunt in this series,” Casal said. “We became friends after she tweeted about her love of the film and we have long looked for a project to do together. She has been our first choice for the character Rainey since we dreamed this show up.”

It comes after Starz unveiled more cast for the film yesterday including musician Benjamin Earl Turner, Shameless actors Atticus Woodward and Jaylen Barron and Good Trouble’s Candace Nicholas-Lippman.

Produced by Lionsgate Television, the series will start production in Oakland and Los Angeles.

The 6th most-watched movie on Netflix right now – according to their Top 10 chart – is a recently-released and little known English-language crime drama called The Night Clerk. Produced by Saban Films and starring Ready Player One‘s Tye Sheridan, the pic tells the disturbing story of a voyeuristic young night clerk who becomes the main suspect of a murder investigation.

Film buffs may see some similarities between this premise and Alfred Hitchcock’s 1960 classic thriller Psycho, and for good reason. Based on a novel by Robert Bloch, that picture centered on a woman who flees her hometown after stealing money from her boss, only to get into a skirmish with the owner of a motel she checks into.

A skirmish, of course, would be putting it mildly. In one of the creepiest sequences ever put to film, receptionist Norman Bates watches his only guest take a shower through a hole in the wall,...

Coming off a 19-year directing hiatus, after the much-maligned Angelina Jolie thriller “Original Sin,” writer/director Michael Cristofer’s newest film, “The Night Clerk,” is the type of amateurish inert sexual thriller that will, fortunately or not, end up forgotten in a pile of VOD releases. One that wastes a talented cast, including Ana de Armas, who, with “Knives Out” and the upcoming “No Time to Die,” will hopefully be moving out of these lazily typecast films sometime soon.

Since his debut in Tree of Life, Tye Sheridan has amassed an interesting collection of film credits that includes the likes of Terrence Malick, Jeff Nicols, David Gordon Green, and Steven Spielberg. Not bad for an actor barely into his 20s.

For The Night Clerk, Sheridan takes on a significantly more complex character. Bart Bromley is a socially challenged individual but one that is doing his best to fit in. During the day, he studies situations, exchanges and other people. At night, he uses what he's learned at his job at a local hotel. In public, he makes every attempt to seem "normal" but anyone that knows Bart and interacts with him for any extended period of time understands that normalcy does not come naturally to Bart.

High art and low art is at war with itself in The Night Clerk, a thriller with aims to be something more. At times, this independent film offers up an intriguing look at an unusual protagonist. At other points, however, it falls victim to cheesy B movie tropes, torpedoing its effectiveness. A surprisingly stacked cast is underwhelming, largely due to the material, preventing them from elevating things much. For every moment that compels, at least one other confounds. Spy Hard: Cristofer Returns with Faulty Noir

It’s been nearly twenty years since Pulitzer Prize winning scribe Michael Cristofer has developed a theatrical feature, last on hand with 2001’s steamy erotic thriller Original Sin, which featured Antonio Banderas and re-teamed the director with his Gia (1998) star, Angelina Jolie. He’s back with The Night Clerk, an original treatment which makes an unwieldy attempt at mining the grey zone of culpability with a lead protagonist who suffers from Asperger’s but has all the problematic voyeuristic tendencies of a Hitchcockian hero in peril.…...

There’s a scene in Michael Cristofer’s The Night Clerk where lead character Bart Bromley (Tye Sheridan) misreads a situation and kisses a woman. His Asperger’s kicks into overdrive, merging a contrite apology with verbal self-flagellation before promising to never do anything so misguided and potentially damaging again. Impulse conquered conditioning for a split second and he’s ready to retreat so far within himself that he’ll never go out in public again thanks to shame—something that wouldn’t be too difficult since he’s already exiled himself to his mother’s basement and only leaves when it’s time to work his evening shift at the local hotel. It’s a very human reaction dialed to eleven and yet seemingly out of character considering he also records people without permission inside their rooms.

Earlier this year it was reported that Kevin James will star as a "merciless" convict who invades a lake home in the action thriller Becky, the latest film from directors Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion. The home invasion movie will pit James against Lulu Wilson as the teenage title character, and now Joel McHale has joined the cast as Wilson's father, along with additional cast members Amanda Brugel and Robert Maillet.

Exclusive: Cuban actress Ana de Armas is set to co-star in Olivier Assayas’ Wasp Network, the spy drama based on Fernando Morais’ book The Last Soldiers of the Cold War. De Armas joins previously announced cast members Edgar Ramírez, Penélope Cruz, Pedro Pascal, Wagner Moura and Gael García Bernal.

The film, which will go before cameras in Havana at the end of this month, tells the true story of Cuban spies in American territory during the 1990s, revealing the tentacles of a Florida-based terrorist network with ramifications in Central America and with the consent of the U.S. government.

Ana de Armas is set to take the title role in 'Waiting for Helen,' a noir thriller directed by Kevin Pollak.

The Cuban actress came to prominence last year with her performance as holographic companion Joi in 'Blade Runner 2049,' opposite Ryan Gosling.

In 'Waiting for Helen,' she will play a waitress who may be an innocent patsy or a sadistic sociopath.

According to the official synopsis: "A detective tells a stranger the story of an attractive, young waitress named Helen, who befriended a customer and was asked to help prove her husband's infidelity. People end up dead."

The detective must then prove Helen is either innocent or guilty before the night is over, or her life will be.

Projects in the pipeline for de Armas include crime drama 'Three Seconds,' alongside Rosamund Pike; Danny Boyle's musical comedy based on the music of The Beatles; and 'The Night Clerk,' about a voyeuristic hotel clerk who becomes the subject of a murder investigation, which also stars Tye Sheridan and Helen Hunt.

Pollak, best known for his roles in 'The Usual Suspects,' 'A Few Good Men,' and 'The Whole Nine Yards,' will also star in the movie.
