Tatami, the groundbreaking Iranian drama co-directed by Oscar winner Guy Nattiv (Golda) and Cannes best actress winner Zar Amir Ebrahimi, has been picked up by XYZ Films for North America, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
Based on real-life stories, the Farsi-language drama sees Arienne Mandi play Leila, an Iranian female judo athlete who travels to a world championship with her coach, played by Ebrahimi. Midway through the competition, they receive an ultimatum from the Islamic Republic ordering Leila to fake an injury and lose, or she will be branded a traitor of the state.
With her own freedom as well as her family’s at stake, she’s faced with an impossible choice: comply with the Iranian regime as her coach implores her to do, or fight on for the gold.

Curb Your Enthusiasm returns to Max this month in what’s being called the show’s final season (for now). If you’re not ready for the Larry David-centric comedy series to end, you can binge all eleven of the show’s previous seasons on Max right now before hitting the new episodes.
Tokyo Vice will also be back in February for season 2. Stars Ansel Elgort, Ken Watanabe, Rinko Kikuchi, Rachel Keller, Show Kasamatsu, and Ayumi Ito are joined by Kubozuka and Miki Maya this time around, as Jake Adelstein feels the danger closing in on him. Max also welcomes you to the premiere of the highly acclaimed (and highly depraved) Dicks: The Musical this month, as a couple of self-obsessed businessmen discover they’re identical twins and decided to bring their divorced parents back together.

Oscar winner Olivia Colman is set to star as a fisherwoman and Dev Patel as her inanimate made-to-order husband in the twisted romance pic Wicker.
Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson will direct the indie from a script they adapted based on a short story, The Wicker Husband, by Ursula Wills-Jones. Topic Studios and Tango will finance and produce Wicker, with the cameras set to start rolling next year.
Colman will play a smelly and ridiculed fisherwoman in a seaside village where, fed up with small-minded neighbors, she commissions herself a husband to be made from wicker, who is played by Patel. In an otherwise conservative town, their unconventional romance sparks outrage, jealousy and chaos, the producers say in their film synopsis.
Black Bear will open international sales for Wicker in the American Film Market, while CAA Media Finance and UTA Independent Film Group will handle sales on the U.

Movies about the end of the world share a similar DNA: chaos, fire, looting, revelations. But in “How It Ends,” from filmmakers Zoe Lister-Jones and Daryl Wein, the apocalypse is as serene and lush as a Southern California spa day.
Though spilling over with catharsis and a full manifestation of the lead character’s inner child, the co-directors, writers and producers have a different take on cinema’s ongoing obsession with the last day on earth — and it looks and feels a lot like coronavirus quarantine, during which it was made.
“Daryl and I, like so many people, had so many questions. Specifically about the future of filmmaking. As artists and as a team, filmmaking is really how we process a lot of deep existential questions. We were faced with both of those things, because of the singular circumstance that we were all forced into, and we didn’t have a way to process them,...

The range of pricing in VOD play has never been so clear. Two films at the extreme ranges of budget and premium stand out among new releases. At $3.99, which represents rock-bottom for a new film, Dinesh D’Souza’s latest right-wing polemic “Trump Card” is #1 at both Apple TV and Google Play, charts that rank by transaction volume.
At the same time, Disney’s “Mulan” is now available on platforms beyond Disney+ for $29.99, and is #1 at the revenue-based FandangoNow. “Ava” also continues its successful showings, with first place at Spectrum.
“Trump Card” is pitched as an expose of “socialism, corruption, and the deep state,” and clearly aimed at Election Day interest. In his past films (which received theatrical release), D’Souza preferred to specifically demonize Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton. This time, the target is far broader than the tougher-to-hate Joe Biden. It placed #2 at FandangoNow, where its low price hurts its ranking.

With the calendar turning the page to October, Halloween appeared to arrive early as things got even stranger and spookier at the domestic box office. Case in point: Christopher Nolan’s big-budget tentpole, Tenet, narrowly edged out the re-release of Hocus Pocus, a Bette Midler comedy that wasn’t exactly a smash hit when it first hit theaters 27 years ago.
Going into the weekend, Warner Bros.’ Tenet seemed to have the field to itself. But the battle for the title of the No. 1 film in North America wound up being much tighter than expected. Still, Nolan’s pricey thriller headed off the competition and landed in first place, pulling in $2.7 million at home in its fifth week while dropping another 20.6%. The PG-13 epic managed a $991 per-screen average in 2,722 theaters, bringing its domestic box-office total to $45.1 million.

As Regal Theaters in the U.S. and U.K. parent Cineworld weigh closing their cinemas, this weekend’s box office offered little encouragement as this weekend’s top 10 came to about $8.2 million, and could be $10 million-$11 million for all films. That’s down from $9.6 million for last weekend’s top 10, which saw about $12 million overall. By comparison: This weekend in 2019, with the opening of “Joker,” brought in $150 million overall.
“Tenet,” by far the biggest contributor to domestic returns since it opened a month ago ,held well again, down 21 percent with $2.7 million. It has reached $45.1 million domestic so far, for $307 million worldwide.
The only country that is not reliant on “Tenet” is China, where local titles have driven the grossed to over $1 billion in the last six weeks. This weekend (a holiday there) showed two titles both gross over $150 million with “My People My Homeland” and the animated “Jiang Ziya.

Warner Bros.’ “Tenet” has passed $300 million at the global box office and $45 million domestically, grossing $2.7 million at U.S. theaters this weekend as Cineworld announces that it will close its U.K. locations and could close most of its Regal Cinemas locations in the U.S.
Overall, the global box office total for the Christopher Nolan thriller now stands at $307 million, with $14.2 million grossed globally. Japan was the top overseas market, providing $2.5 million, while France and Germany combined for $2.1 million. In Great Britain — which is now seeing theaters close nationwide thanks to a combination of surging Covid-19 infections and news that MGM was moving the release of the James Bond film “No Time to Die” to 2021 — “Tenet” added $804,000 to bring its cume in Nolan’s home country to just under $21 million.

As the coronavirus-forced lockdown continues, movie studios have realized releasing new titles directly for consumers to stream and rent at home may continue to be necessary. Upcoming releases on subscription platforms and VOD range from horror films for stay-at-home Halloween to family movies for the holiday season.
While a handful of high-profile films still plan to premiere in theaters, there is a wealth of content to choose from on home viewing platforms, including Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, Disney Plus or Apple Plus. Many more titles are available through virtual cinemas and on rental/purchase platforms such as iTunes.
October is particularly loaded with spooky new movies, including horror titles “Books of Blood” on Hulu, “Scare me” on Shudder and “A Babysitter’s Guide to Monster Hunting” on Netflix. Premiering Oct. 21, Netflix’s romantic drama “Rebecca” centers on a newlywed who is faced with the legacy of her husband’s late wife.

How many times have your friends — or you — sworn to take the week off Twitter, only to come rushing back because some huge cultural event has taken place, and you just gotta see all those hot takes? That’s the basic premise of the comedy “Save Yourselves!”, only it’s not a presidential blunder or an awards-show gaffe that our heroes miss while on a digital break: It’s an alien invasion.
And while that’s ultimately a premise that feels like it would have resulted in a great 45-minute short as opposed to a mostly-good 93-minute feature, the movie does find new ways to explore its central theme and to plumb the psyches of its central characters, Jack and Su.

When writer-director team Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson conceived their sci-fi comedy “Save Yourselves!” they had no idea how timely it might become.
The film, which debuted at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, stars Sunita Mani and John Reynolds as a couple who head to upstate New York to disconnect from their phones and find themselves. Cut off from the world, they miss the news that the planet is under attack.
The duo said they got their inspiration by asking themselves, “What’s the worst thing that could happen?”
“What’s happening in real life is worse,” Fischer told TheWrap’s Beatrice Verhoeven at the festival in January — months before the idea of self-isolation and quarantine became a commonplace phenomenon. “The slow death of the planet is more dramatic, but we went with the four-day end of world.”

The Mood of the Gods: Fischer & Wilson Deliver Millennial Crises in Amusing Debut
“This is the best thing we’ve ever done,” remarks one part of a granola millennial heterosexual couple as they embark on what promises to be a rural, Emersonian idyll just before the world as they know it irrevocably disappears in Save Yourselves!, the directorial debut of Eleanor Wilson and Alex H. Fischer.
Familiar tropes get mashed together for a low-fi sci-fi moonlighting as a semi-serious relationship movie, but this is as multihyphenated as it gets since its superficiality glides into ambiguity, at least as far as making any conclusions about relationships, social media saturation, gentrification or the garden variety ennui of the digital age.…...

Save Yourselves! has one of the best trailers I've seen in years, harkening back to vintage sci-fi classics like The Blob.
But are the expectations of the trailer met by the movie itself?
We have a full review, which, we promise, won't ruin the entire experience for you.
John Reynolds and Sunita Mani play Jack and Su, a hip Brooklyn couple who find that they are far too connected to technology to the detriment of their relationships.
It's a common theme, and there's a reason for that. We Are too connected to our technology. Every single one of us can understand the plight of couples or families facing the same dilemma.
That makes for compelling and relatable themes, and there are many opportunities for both comedy and drama. Just this past week, we recommended a movie similarly themed on Uptv Network.

Save Yourselves!, a Bleecker Street comedy sci-fi film in which pouffes invade and seek to destroy Earth, hits theaters this fall. Written and directed by Alex H. Fischer and Eleanor Wilson, the Sundance-featured rom-com focuses on a millennial couple portrayed by John Reynolds and Sunita Mani, who head to a cabin in a bid to unplug, but instead find themselves in the midst of an invasion.
What is a pouffe? Per the trailer, they look kind of cute and unobtrusive as the couple Jack (Reynolds) and Su (Mani) observe one in their cabin.

Bleecker Street has acquired the U.S. distribution rights to “The Klarsfelds,” a new documentary film from director Alexis Bloom that focuses on the true history of a family of Nazi hunters.
Bloom is the director of the Roger Ailes documentary “Divide and Conquer” and a producer on the Wikileaks documentary “We Steal Secrets,” and her latest film “The Klarsfelds” is an animated documentary thriller about Serge and Beate Klarsfeld, two agents and activists who have worked throughout their lives to track former Nazis in order to document the events of the Holocaust.
Both agents are still alive and are living in Paris, and their story features interviews with the subjects and with other Mossad agents who have never shared their story before. Bloom will frame “The Klarsfeld” as an animated, espionage thriller while also focusing on the personal and surprising side of the Klarsfeld family’s relationship.

In the first trailer for “Save Yourselves!,” a comedy sci-fi that was a Sundance darling, a young millennial couple decides to unplug from their phones and travel to a cabin upstate — only for them to be blissfully unaware when aliens invade and quickly destroy civilization.
“Save Yourselves!” stars John Reynolds and Sunita Mani as the clueless couple now working to survive the alien invasion, not to mention figure out how to even function without the help of their smartphones.
“We don’t have any skills,” Mani says in the trailer. “I’ve been wanting to Google ‘How to build a trap to catch a rabbit’ so bad,” Reynolds replies.
The good news is that the aliens in “Save Yourselves!” are all adorable little colored poof balls that look like fluffy pillows or decorations, and the couple will figure out how to survive with or without WiFi and cell reception.

As cars pull up to the Wellfleet Drive-In on Cape Cod, a masked attendant hands every vehicle two small pieces of paper — a listing of the current line-up of double features promising rain or shine shows and encouraging early arrival, and a yellow sheet of protocols. On the sheet, printed in bold above a primer on the theater’s quaint original 1957 speaker system and a stern warning against the use of laser pointers, reads:
“Attention. Per order of the commonwealth of Massachusetts: There are two parking spaces between each speaker post and each vehicle is permitted one space. The right side must remain empty even if another car is part of the same quarantine unit. Social distancing must be maintained in all lines. Masks must be worn when outside of your vehicle. Anyone who refuses to comply with the rules will be ejected without refund.”
Welcome to social distancing at the drive-in.

Exclusive: CAA has signed Alex Fischer, Eleanor Wilson and Rachel Wolther for representation.
Fischer and Wilson wrote and directed Save Yourselves!, the sci-fi comedy that had its world premiere in the U.S. Dramatic Competition at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. The pic, starring John Reynolds and Sunita Man as a couple who have unplugged from the world for a week at an isolated cabin, making them blissfully aware when aliens attack the earth, was acquired by Bleecker Street and will hit theaters this summer.
Fischer and Wolther, meanwhile, have written and will direct Nobody Nothing Nowhere, a sci-fi pic based on their Black List 2018 script that was selected for the Sundance Screenwriters Lab. The original logline: Ruth is one of the non-people: human-looking beings designed and trained for the sole purpose of filling in a realistic world for a bland guy named Dave, the only person to actually exist on Earth.

Bleecker Street has taken global distribution to the U.S. Dramatic Competition Sundance Film Festival comedy Save Yourselves! from writer-directors Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson. A summer theatrical release is being planned for the pic produced by Keshet Studios.
Pic follows Jack (John Reynolds) and Su (Sunita Mani), a hip Brooklyn couple who like many of their friends find themselves dependent on technology and unable to put down their phones. Fearing their mindless scrolling may impact their connection with each other, they seize the chance to head to an isolated cabin in the woods, vowing to unplug from the outside world for a week.
Sheltered from texts and push notifications, they are blissfully unaware when aliens attack the Earth. As strange events unfold, the couple must figure out a way back to civilization — or what’s left of it. Ben Sinclair also stars.

Save Yourselves! offers a slice of small sci-fi in a comedy world, attempting to mesh social commentary with general irreverence. Unfortunately, the laughs fade about halfway through and the world-building never blossoms into something wholly engaging. Written and directed by Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson, there is an energy early on that slips away as the narrative moves forward.
Jack (John Reynolds) and Su (Sunita Mani) are a stereotypical Brooklyn couple, very hip and very intellectual and very unprepared for what will happen next. Given the opportunity to use a friend’s cottage upstate, they make a spontaneous decision to escape the city, turn off all of their devices and recalibrate in the wilderness. While they’re at it, maybe they can deepen their relationship. As soon as they arrive, however, aliens decide to attack the planet, starting with the city they’ve just left. It’s quickly clear...
