Steven Spielberg is undoubtedly one of the greatest voices in filmmaking today. Since the ’70s, he has proven himself to be a very competent director who can dabble in any filmmaking genre with ease. Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Raiders of The Lost Ark, Saving Private Ryan, Jurassic Park, The Color Purple, etc. are examples of his complete mastery over varied genres.
Melinda Dillon and Cary Guffey in Steven Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Spielberg tasted success early in his career with Jaws and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. When he decided to put a comedic spin on the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, many, including John Wayne, warned him that it would backfire on him. The underwhelming reception of the film led to a big realization of the mistakes that he made.

Samara Weaving is buckling up for 20th Century Studios forthcoming heist thriller Eenie Meanie. Sitting shotgun for the project is Karl Glusman, with writer-director Shawn Simmons at the helm. Producing the fast-paced thriller is Deadpool franchise alums Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.
In Eenie Meanie, Samara Weaving plays Edie, “a former teenage getaway driver who is dragged back into her unsavory past when a former employer offers her a chance to save the life of her chronically unreliable ex-boyfriend.” (via Deadline)
Glusman hits the pavement as John, Edie’s recurrent boyfriend. Despite their differences, Edie feels compelled to pull John out of the flames of a terrible situation.
As one of my favorite actors in the business today, Samara Weaving is a force of nature. For some of her best performances, check out Joe Lynch’s Mayhem. The 2017 action-comedy is like Office Space meets The Raid and is a must-watch.

DarkGame, the latest thriller about dark doings on the Dark Web, opens with the masked figure known as The Presenter overseeing the murder of a bound woman in a manner chosen by the highest bidder. By the way, he chooses a chainsaw as the instrument of her demise. That’s followed by Detectives Ben Jacobs and Cathy Burnette rescuing two missing children from traffickers.
Ben has barely gotten home to his pregnant wife however when they’re called back into the station. The woman we saw killed in the opening scene had vanished without a trace a couple of weeks earlier. The footage is the only clue they have as to who is responsible, but the people behind it know how to cover their tracks.

“The Continental” boasts that it’s “From the World of John Wick.” But the Peacock spin-off is thankfully uninterested in providing a microwaved version of the same story. Instead, the miniseries takes its cues from stylized crime auteurs, folks like Joe Carnahan or Guy Ritchie who have as much fun, if not more, with their eccentric character archetypes, rat-a-tat banter and bold needledrops as they do with any blood shed on screen.
But “The Continental” merely aspires to these authors of cinematic cool. And in its Icarus-esque reach, what it faintly grasps only reminds us how hard it is to make something look easy.
Over three sprawling, 90-minute episodes, “The Continental” is centered on a simple story, one that has roots as recent as “The Raid” and as far back as “Rio Bravo” – or more accurately, John Carpenter’s riffs on “Rio Bravo” like “Assault on Precinct 13” or “Escape From New York.

A couple years ago, it was announced that Shawn Simmons – creator and executive producer of the Prime Video series Wayne – would be writing an “irreverent high-speed thriller” for 20th Century Studios, with fellow Wayne executive producers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (who are best known for writing Zombieland and the Deadpool movies) on board to produce the film. Now Deadline has confirmed that the project is moving forward under the title Eenie Meanie, with Simmons directing and Samara Weaving taking on the lead role.
Eenie Meanie is expected to be released through the Hulu streaming service. The story centers on a former teenage getaway driver who is dragged back into her unsavory past when a former employer offers her a chance to save the life of her chronically unreliable ex-boyfriend. With Weaving signing on to star in the film, it sounds like we know who’s going to be playing that getaway driver.

Actor Sharon Stone looked forward to being cast in a project about the late Lana Turner. But when Michael Douglas’ wife Catherine Zeta-Jones nabbed the project instead, Stone couldn’t help express her disappointment in the outcome.

Stone may have been in the running once to play late actor Lana Turner. According to TCM, Turner was an actor on the rise in the late 30s, having made her small silver screen debut in the feature They Won’t Forget.
From there, Turner’s career experienced even higher heights in the 40s. The 40s saw her starring in notable features like Honky Tonk and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, further growing her celebrity.
Deep in the 40s and 50s, Turner was already an established star and an A-lister in her own right.

Movie star John Wayne had an iconic walk that helped amplify his on-screen presence in Western and war films. He became the face of an entire era of Western filmmaking, entering the popular culture canon in more ways than one. However, Wayne didn’t entirely understand how his walk was much different from any other. Therefore, he didn’t get how that added to the sex appeal that he had earlier in his career.

In 1964, The Beatles released A Hard Day’s Night, the first of several movies about the band. It was a comedy in which they played themselves, and its success led to several other Beatles films. The band broke up in 1970, so a finite number of movies feature their acting chops. If you like A Hard Day’s Night, you might also be a fan of other movies featuring musicians playing themselves.

It's been nearly half a century since John Wayne last donned his iconic stetson hat to play a Western hero, but the actor's name is still synonymous with America's collective image of the Wild West cowboy. During the golden age of Hollywood Westerns, Wayne was the most recognizable gunslinger around, and he won the hearts of millions playing tough, imperfect, sometimes irascible men fighting their way through the rough-and-tumble frontier. From "Stagecoach" to "The Shootist," Wayne frequently embodied what many remember as the prototypical on-screen cowboy.
In reality, though, Westerns existed on screen even before Wayne made his cinematic debut in the 1920s, and the actor wasn't particularly fond of the way they tended to be portrayed. "I made up my mind," Wayne told Maurice Zolotow for his biography "John Wayne, Shooting Star," "that I was going to play a real man to the best of my ability. I felt...

By 1948, Howard Hawks had made just about every type of film over his then 22-year career when he decided to take on the most American of movie genres: the Western. Though he'd made plenty of films about rough and/or ruthless men, the closest he'd come to making a true oater was with 1934's "Barbary Coast," which plays like more of a period crime film set in mid-1850s San Francisco. "Red River," written by Borden Chase and Charles Schnee (based on Chase's serialized novel "The Chisholm Trail"), would be the real deal.
And it almost fell apart before Hawks shot a frame of film.
While the story about Tom Dunson, a determined rancher who turns into a horse-riding Captain Ahab during a harrowing cattle drive from Texas to Missouri, was crammed with action and intrigue, it proved tonally problematic for Hawks' star. Gary Cooper had made several films with...

Barbara Walters was a renowned American broadcast journalist. She broke new ground (as well as old glass ceilings) by becoming the very first woman to co-host "Today" in 1974 and the very first woman to co-anchor "ABC Evening News" in 1976. Although by no means the full extent of her resume, Walters also produced and co-hosted "20/20," a news magazine, for ABC and created, produced, and hosted "The View," an ABC daytime talk show which kept her busy until her retirement in 2014. On December 30th, in the last few hours of 2022, Walters passed away at the age 93.
To her adoring viewership, Walters was perhaps best remembered for her many long form interviews with celebrities, politicians, and any persons of public interest. From presidents to performers, Walters sat down with them all for a few questions and some trademark gab. In 2014, the year of her retirement, ABC turned the interview spotlight upon Walters...

15 years after its release, "The Mist" has aged like fine wine. Despite some digital effects that don't look great in 2022, it's a straight-up good film that still lives in the back of the minds of the most horror-oriented folk. The thematic messages of the Stephen King adaptation work just as well as its gory parts, but the monsters are pretty neat, too. However, the bloody moral corruption of the human soul is not the only thing available for us to chew on. Shockingly enough, there is something much less sinister in the depths of "The Mist." The film is certainly not a family-friendly affair, but there is a not-so-random Easter egg that alludes to a widely-adored franchise.

John Wayne was in perhaps the biggest creative rut of his career in 1969. He'd just made the worst film of his career outside of "The Conqueror" in "The Green Berets," and with the advent of the New Hollywood revolution, was growing culturally irrelevant. His best collaborators, John Ford and Howard Hawks, were either fully retired or on their way out. Wayne could keep making formulaic Westerns with the hacks who let him call the shots on set, but the returns would be ever diminishing. If he wanted to matter in the film industry again, he had to take a risk.
Charles Portis' novel "True Grit," about a young girl who hires an alcoholic U.S. Marshal to hunt down the men who killed her father, offered the 62-year-old Wayne the perfect opportunity to tweak his image. The lawman role of Rooster Cogburn would allow The Duke to show off his...

Angie Dickinson once said of Jack L. Warner, "Jack was funny. He was funny because he wasn't funny, but he was always trying to be funny, and that struck me as funny."
Dickinson's "Rio Bravo" co-star, John Wayne, was far from enamored of Warner's funniness, particularly as it pertained to business. Warner was an early practitioner of "Hollywood accounting," which is where the studio shifts the earnings from its hits to make money-losing films appear profitable. There are many examples, but the best known arose out of Buchwald v. Paramount, wherein the company attempted to avoid compensating the writer (whose original story had been stolen by the filmmakers) by claiming the film – which grossed 289 million worldwide on a 36 million budget – failed to turn a profit.
In Hollywood, it's sadly common for studios to screw writers out of money. When it comes to a major movie star like Wayne, however,...

If you've ever seen a "John Wick" movie, you know that the titular character, played by Keanu Reeves, is the epitome of a cool lone wolf. Yet even though the John Wick franchise is one of the most popular recent action series, with its latest installment having grossed over 326 million worldwide (via Box Office Mojo), the iconic hero might not have existed without the legacy of Western star John Wayne.

Update, with video Despite the Covid death last year of its announced co-composer Adam Schlesinger, The Nanny Broadway musical is “almost ready to launch,” Fran Drescher said on The View today.
And no, Drescher won’t be taking the stage as her ’90s sitcom incarnation Fran Fine.
“I really can’t sing,” Drescher said on today’s episode of ABC’s The View. “This is going to be a very heavy singing part, so we’re going to have to find basically the next Barbra Streisand, I think.”
Drescher, who is writing the show’s book with her The Nanny co-creator Peter Marc Jacobson, first revealed the development of a musical adaptation more than a year ago. At that time, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend‘s Rachel Bloom and Fountains of Wayne’s Adam Schlesinger were set to write the music, but Schlesinger died several months later of Covid-19 at the age of...

‘John Wick’ TV Series Details Emerge: ‘The Continental’ Will Be a Gritty Prequel About Young Winston
As fourth and fifth film installments in the beloved action franchise “John Wick” head our way, details are finally starting to emerge about the prequel spinoff series first announced back in 2017. Known as “The Continental,” the show will be a prequel series likely centered on a young Winston, the character played by Ian McShane in the movies. Lionsgate TV boss Kevin Beggs recently spoke with Deadline about plans for the series, and what it might look like even without Keanu Reeves in a starring role. Starz is currently set to host the show.
“We took a lot of pitches, and then the creative team from this obscure little show called Wayne that was on YouTube came to us with their take,” Beggs said. “We were really blown away because it solved a bunch of problems and was super exciting, about a crumbling New York in the 1970s with a garbage...

If your UK lockdown viewing is starting to feel a bit barrel-scrapey (there are only so many times one can rewatch The Office: An American Workplace without turning into a Dwight Shrute bobblehead) then Amazon has some potentially tasty options for the coming month. US sci-fi Soulmates starring Succession‘s Sarah Snook (pictured) arrived on AMC last year and makes its UK debut on the 8th, while Rosamund Pike-starring con-artist thriller I Care a Lot, also starring Game of Thrones’ Peter Dinklage, has been picking up some great reviews.
Here’s that, plus new weekly episodes of American Gods, The Expanse, The Stand (via Starzplay), and some tennis if you enjoy that kind of thing. We’ll update this guide as new release dates are confirmed and changes are made.

December’s really what we’re hanging on for, Amazon Prime Video-wise. That’s when the new 10-episode season of The Expanse lands. November though, does have a couple of likely streaming candidates in the form of dark comedy Wayne, which, with its teen-road-trip and nihilist violence vibe, sounds like just the thing for a fan of Channel 4’s excellent The End of the F***ing World. There’s also the fifth and final season of Syfy’s The Magicians, plus new Alan Ball film Uncle Frank, starring Paul Bettany, which had a warm reception at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.
As the sneak-release of Borat Subsequent Moviefilm shows, Amazon Prime Video is capable of surprising us. In addition to the confirmed new November releases below, there will be more on their way which we’ll add as and when they arrive.

The Snyder Cut of Justice League might not have even settled on an official title yet, but Zack Snyder has steadily been dropping plenty of tantalizing hints about what he has in store for his reassembled version of the infamously troubled box office dud.
The filmmaker’s excitement would already be more than evident without him admitting that he won’t be getting paid a penny by Warner Bros. to finally realize his original vision for the Dceu’s epic failure, and based on the images and footage we’ve seen so far, it looks like the Snyder Cut will be an entirely different experience from Joss Whedon’s maligned theatrical edition.
The re-designed Steppenwolf already looks ten times better in a low-resolution image than the poorly-rendered character that we first saw in Justice League, while the internet went wild at seeing Henry Cavill’s Superman clad in the iconic black suit.

Some vindication has arrived for fans of Paul W. S. Anderson’s Capcom video game adaptation, Resident Evil. Terminator and Aliens director James Cameron has picked it as one of his surprising lockdown movies of choice, though he does describe it as a “guilty pleasure”, a phrase we don’t put a lot of stock in here at Den of Geek – you shouldn’t really feel guilty about liking the things you like, even if they’re objectively bobbins. One person’s ‘trash’ can be another person’s treasure, after all.
Cameron revealed 2002’s Resident Evil, which ended up kick-starting a ludicrous but pretty damn entertaining six-film horror franchise, to be a lockdown fave in a new interview with Empire, citing the performance of Avatar actress Michelle Rodriguez as a standout factor.
“One of my guilty-pleasure films that I actually think is quite beautifully made is Resident Evil,” he said.

If you weren’t excited to see this book hit the stands, then you can just collect up all your stuff and get out right now. Batman: The Animated Series, which aired in the early to mid 1990′s, is probably the most beloved of animated shows, and its influence on comics in general has been huge. Some people will still swear it has the best depiction of Batman, in any medium, full stop, and it’s not easy to argue with that. Some of you younger fans may be thinking, so what, an old animated show, means nothing to me. Like the character of Renee Montoya? First appeared in the show. How about Harley Quinn? Yep, show first, comics later. There are also too many continuity changes and changes of style to mention here but, huge influence as I said.

Though Joker was, on the whole, a serious movie about a man struggling with mental illness and clown-based homicide, it still found time for the occasional gag for attentive Batman fans. One of my favorite references was when Arthur Fleck goes to Wayne Manor and talks to a young Bruce, who slides down a playset fireman’s pole in a cute nod to Batman 1966. But beyond that, it seems that Phillips stuck in a little nod to Heath Ledger’s iconic performance in The Dark Knight.
I wouldn’t blame you if you missed it though, because it’s pretty damn subtle. Redditor Olympus_XIII spotted it, posting the photo in the gallery below. As you can see, the design on the back of the ambulance is a clear nod to Heath Ledger’s makeup, not to mention a reference to him disguising himself as a nurse and destroying a hospital.

Polifroni died in Columbus, Ohio, on Thursday, Nov. 21 as a result of dementia, her daughter-in-law confirmed to Variety.
With more than 50 credits to her name by the end of her career, Polifroni worked in both film and television, though most of her hires appeared on the small screen.
Polifroni worked on “Gunsmoke” beginning in 1966 and continued through 1975. She was responsible for suggesting and landing Bette Davis for a guest role on the show, and also gave Jon Voight one of his earliest Hollywood parts. One of Jodie Foster’s youngest roles, at age seven, came after being hired by Polifroni for a small role in “Gunsmoke.” Loretta Swit also appeared on the series thanks to Polifroni, as well as on “Hawaii Five-o,” ahead of...
