Life has been a movie for Sterling K. Brown and Ryan Michelle Bathe, who found their match in each other back during their freshman year after making it to the play Joe Turner’s Come and Gone. However, the road ahead was far from smooth for the two teens, as the This Is Us actors would share an on-and-off bond throughout their college years.
However, the biggest obstacle they faced came up for a pretty crazy reason. Bathe recalled that her mother and grandmother predicted that the Primetime Emmy Winner was up to no good.

Squid Game: The Challenge may not be as big as the show that inspired it, but the competition series still got off to a very strong start.
Netflix’s unscripted offshoot of its most popular series of all time scored a strong opening in the Nielsen streaming rankings for Thanksgiving week. Adam Sandler’s animated movie Leo claimed the top spot overall, and Young Sheldon also joined the top 10 after making its Netflix debut.
Squid Game: The Challenge drew 1.42 billion minutes of viewing in the United States for the week of Nov. 20-26. It was the top streaming series for the week, beating out Bluey (1.17 billion minutes) on Disney+, and finished second overall behind the 1.53 billion minutes for Leo.
The Crown, which finished first overall the previous week, slipped to second among originals with 835 million minutes of viewing, an 11.5 percent decline from a week earlier. Disney+’s The Santa Clauses...

When Tyler Perry and BET partnered in 2019 to create content for both the cable network and its new streaming service, BET+, they had a clear goal: Cooperation, rather than competition. BET CEO Scott Mills compares BET’s relationship with the “Madea” creator to how Pixar changed the animation game for Disney.
“If BET, by analogy, is to Black viewers what Disney is to families, then when Tyler Perry came up on the scene, it was similar to when Pixar came onto the scene,” Mills said. “Disney had an animation business that was just shocked by the extraordinary success of Pixar. Disney ultimately had this great vision that as opposed to competing with Pixar, they should bring Pixar onto their side.”
Instead of dividing and conquering, they would join forces to build and expand together. And according to Nielsen’s ratings among Black viewers, that has been a recipe for success.

Comedy drama Harlem has been renewed for a third series at Amazon Prime, and here are the details.
Writer Tracy Oliver made her name writing a series of comedy features with Black-ish creator Kenya Barris, including 2016 sequel Barbershop: The Next Cut, the wonderful Girls Trip, a film starring Queen Latifah, Regina Hall, Jada Pinkett Smith and Tiffany Haddish, which flew under the radar in 2017 and is well worth seeking out, and 2019’s Little. Oliver most recently penned a television adaptation of First Wives Club, which ran for three series, and last year’s comedy horror The Blackening.
She then went on to create single camera comedy Harlem, which, reports Variety, has just been renewed for a third series at Amazon Prime. While the setup is nothing new – the series follows four friends who met at University in New York, and subsequently have to support each other through the trials and...

Turns out, it wasn’t much of a challenge at all.
“Squid Game: The Challenge” dominated Netflix’s overall leaderboard in its debut week, when it drew 20.1 million views. The unscripted competition series picked up where the I.P. left off in 2021, bumping Part 1 of “The Crown’s” sixth season to second place (8.8 million views) for the week of November 20, 2023.
“Squid Game: The Challenge,” filmed in the UK, is an English-language series; Og “Squid Game” was a Korean-language series dubbed into local languages. As such, the scripted show technically rests atop Netflix’s “Non-English” list, though it blows away all the English-language stuff anyway.
“The Challenge” was so big it brought “Squid Game” back to the Global Top 10 for non-english series — at no. 6 with 1.6 million views — its 21st appearance. The scripted show hadn’t made the list since the week ending June 19, 2022. The long Thanksgiving holiday weekend sure helped the streams pile up.

The latest feature from David Fincher, a big-budget drama series from Steven Knight and Shawn Levy, and an Oscar hopeful starring Annette Bening and Jodie Foster are among the standout new additions hitting Netflix in November.
With The Killer, Fincher reteams with Seven writer Andrew Kevin Walker to adapt the graphic novel written by Alexis Nolent. The film, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival this year and debuts on Netflix on Nov. 10, stars Michael Fassbender as a shadowy unnamed assassin and features a cast that includes Arliss Howard, Charles Parnell, Gabriel Polanco, Kerry O’Malley, Emiliano Pernía, Sala Baker, Sophie Charlotte and Tilda Swinton.
The Hollywood Reporter‘s review of The Killer described the film as “a satisfyingly retro, location-hopping genre exercise with fisticuffs, gadgets (albeit ones bought from Amazon) and smooth-talking antagonists that all plays like a tongue-in-cheek spoof of James Bond movies.”

Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers from “The Blackening,” now streaming on Starz and available on VOD.
Tracy Oliver is best-known as the co-writer of “Girls Trip” and the creator of “Harlem” and “First Wives Club,” but she’s also quite proficient with numbers. And in terms of the success of her latest film, “The Blackening,” the numbers tell an important tale.

A couple days ago, we learned that Hocus Pocus 3 is in development at the Disney+ streaming service – and now The Wrap has confirmed that this sequel is coming from the same creative team as the previous sequel! Hocus Pocus 2 director Anne Fletcher is returning to direct the film from a screenplay by Hocus Pocus 2 writer Jen D’Angelo. Although we know who’s making the movie now, details on the plot they’re brewing up are still being kept under wraps.
The original cult favorite Hocus Pocus was released in 1993. Directed by Kenny Ortega from a screenplay credited to Mick Garris and Neil Cuthbert (and based on story Garris crafted with David Kirschner), that film was about a trio of witch sisters who have been cursed since 1963. The fearsome threesome is inadvertently resurrected 300 years later by a boy whose family has moved from Los Angeles to Salem. As they...

Last September, Disney+ released a sequel that a lot of fans had been waiting nearly thirty years for: Hocus Pocus 2, a follow-up to the 1993 cult favorite Hocus Pocus. It was a record-breaking release, with subscribers streaming the movie for 2.7 billion minutes over its opening weekend. So it’s not too surprising to hear (via The New York Times) that Hocus Pocus 3 is now in development. Confirmation comes directly from Sean Bailey, the President of Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Production.
Directed by Anne Fletcher from a screenplay by Jen D’Angelo (Workaholics), Hocus Pocus 2 saw Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy reprising the roles of the Sanderson Sisters. The film has the following synopsis: Picking up 29 years after a teen named Max lit the Black Flame Candle and resurrected the three 17th-century child-essence-stealing sorceresses, Winifred (Midler), Sarah (Parker), and Mary (Najimy) are now looking for revenge. “Our characters are wrestling with very contemporary situations,” explains Scott Wittman of the musical “Some Like it Hot.” He and Marc Shaiman are the Tony-winning songwriting duo behind the score. The pair was adamant that their tunes be used to expand and reinvent the characters for this stage adaptation, rather than simply copy what viewers would expect from the classic movie. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
When it comes to the overall musical style of the show, Shaiman exclaims ”I just took an MGM view of it all.” He explains that the classic MGM films from the 1920s, 30s and 40s all contain a similar sound full of big band and strings. ”I just wanted to make use of all the great sounds of really, almost 3 decades worth of swing and elegant, romantic, joyous music,” describes the composer. Bette Midler is crediting divine intervention for turning down “Sister Act.”
The multi-hyphenate talent revealed that she said no to starring in the 1992 musical comedy about a woman who pretends to be a nun while in the witness protection program. There are not many people busier than Jennifer Lopez, but Michelle Buteau is certainly making a run at that title. In addition to co-starring with Lopez in the new romantic comedy “Marry Me,” Buteau just wrapped filming the third season of BET’s “First Wives Club,” hosted her third season of Netflix’s “The Circle” and is gearing up to star in an eight-episode series based on her book of essays titled “Survival of the Thickest” for Netflix. While conducting this phone interview with Variety, she’s simultaneously cooking cacio e pepe.
Flashback to November 2019: Buteau was on the set of “Marry Me” with teething twins at home, all while writing her book.

After years of working toward a breakthrough, “Marry Me” marked the moment in Buteau’s career where “when it rains it pours,” and she fully embraced the deluge. “Especially in comedy,...
