    The Almond and the Seahorse

Celyn Jones takes the plaudits here with an engaging and considered performance as the amiable "Joe". Married to "Sarah" (Rebel Wilson), he is suffering from a regressive form of amnesia that might soon ensure he has no idea who she is. Though caring, she is struggling with this traumatic and frustratingly repetitive existence and using their doctor "Falmer" (Meera Syal) as a sort of conduit, we meet other people whose relationships and lives are being eroded by similar forms of cerebral wasting away. Apparently the film's title comes from two parts of the brain that are similarly shaped and that deal with memory - and for a while this is quite a poignant look at how people must deal with such an intangible illness. Those affected don't miss what they never had, so increasingly it's those around them who must reconcile themselves to lives where they have to learn play a different part to the one they signed up for. Aside from the quite touching effort from Jones, though, the rest of this is really poorly written and prone to too many tangents. The sexualising of the relationship between "Sarah" and "Toni" (Charlotte Gainsbourg) who's long term partner, a skilful cellist, has been admitted for observation suggest some need for diversion and hope amidst the relatives, but quickly fizzles out bringing nothing at all to the story. The cynical and aloof characterisation of "Falmer" - who may, or may not, have issues of her own, is so devoid of sympathy that I found her very difficult to believe. There are some thought-provoking threads to consider here, but Wilson isn't really a very compelling actor to watch. The whole thing relies too much on the use of prop cigarettes and upon our own, innate, attitudes of compassion and appreciation of the frustrations rather then using the characters to depict them. It skates on far too thin ice most of the time, and is really quite disappointing.

Downbeat Brit drama that sadly doesn't come close to "The Father" that it aspires to

In downbeat Brit drama "The Almond And The Seahorse" traumatic brain injuries render Trine Dyrholm & Celyn Jones with no memories of their lives each morning they wake, which hugely strains respective partners Charlotte Gainsbourg & Rebel Wilson (meh) - despite help from arrogant know-it-all doc Meera Syal (meh) & staff. Jones' performance is the best here (edging Gainsbourg) perhaps cos he also co-wrote (with Kaite O'Reilly) & co-directed (with fellow debutant director Tom Stern)... tho it seems he's a better actor than writer / director. He tries doing for brain injuries what "The Father" did for dementia, but sadly doesn't come even close to that superb movie.

For me this was real, too real

Lived the same experience, so I understood every single moment in movie. Its still a movie, yet!

However, it's also important to recognize that movies are a form of entertainment and storytelling.

Despite this, movies can still be a powerful tool for empathy and understanding

The emotional connection that can be formed with a movie when the viewer has undergone a similar experience to what is depicted on screen. It also recognizes that movies are a form of entertainment and storytelling, and may not accurately reflect reality. Despite this, movies can still resonate deeply with viewers and provide a means for empathy and understanding.

    Rebel Wilson's Best

The Almond and the Seahorse is powerful and moving film about dealing with a loved one who is suffering from memory loss. The film follows two couples, both of whom are dealing with a partner who has severe memory loss. The two stories run parallel but occasionally overlap. I won't spoil anything, but this is defiantly worth a watch. All of the performances were excellent. Plus, Anyone who has experienced a loved one who either has lost their memory or started to lose it will relate to this film and the characters' struggles. It was also nice to see Rebel Wilson take on a different kind of role. Don't get me wrong, I think she was great at what she does for the most part, and Pitch Perfect 1 and 2 are among my favorite movies of all time. While she is great in those movies, this was just so different for her and I might dare say this is her best performance to date.

Emotionally Poignant Film: 'The Almond and the Seahorse' explores memory loss in relationships

"The Almond and the Seahorse" is a thought-provoking film that delves into the topic of memory and its fragility in the context of relationships affected by traumatic brain injuries. The performances by Rebel Wilson and Charlotte Gainsbourg are noteworthy, they both are able to convey the emotional turmoil and the complexities of the characters they play, The film's subject matter is both compelling and unique, and it's creditable the way it attempts to shed light on a condition that is not often explored on screen. The film is well-intentioned and emotionally poignant.

Although the film has some pacing issue and the plot feels overstuffed at times, it ultimately has a strong emotional core that makes the audience feel invested in the characters and their struggles. The film's episodic structure might be disorienting at first but it ultimately creates an engaging narrative structure.

Overall, The Almond and the Seahorse is a thought-provoking film that explores a subject matter not often explored on screen. While it has its shortcomings, it's strong performances and the emotional investment it creates with the characters, makes it a worth watching experience.
