Foals frontman and guitarist Yannis Philippakis has announced a new collaborative EP with Tony Allen, the late drummer who played heavily with Fela Kuti, under the name Yannis & the Yaw. He’s also shared the EP’s lead single, “Walk Through Fire.”
Landing on August 31st, the Lagos Paris London ft. Tony Allen EP has been in the works from the Foals frontman for over eight years. Philippakis first worked with Tony Allen in Paris in 2016, and began collaborating with the Nigerian Afrobeats pioneer as well as multi-instrumentalists Vincent Taeger, Vincent Taurelle, and Ludovic Bruni.
According to Philippakis, the two-day sessions culminated in an unfinished EP, and they occasionally regrouped to finish over the following four years until Covid isolated both him and Allen. Allen sadly passed in April 2020, and Philippakis felt a responsibility to carry the EP through to the finish line: “There was an imperative to finish it...

Chekhov had that line about a gun on the mantlepiece, but Argylle doesn't want you to wait. The perforated heat shield pretty clearly identifies it as some variant of the Remington Model 1897 but it's named by a carving on the handle. And, oh my darling, "Clementine" is hardly the most obvious thing Argylle has to offer. It'd be great if it was a harbinger of narrative significance, but a diet of Easter eggs is the dream of children.
An action-comedy, and perhaps more of one than the other, it's from the same stable as Kingsman and the like. Even if you didn't have references in canned drinks or beer pumps the tone and large elements of the cast would be clue enough. Memories can be comforting. They can be entertaining, or inspiring, or even peaceful. But they can also be heartbreaking. Like many of the films constructed from the cerebral and somber works of Charlie Kaufman, the subject of today’s episode is a sleepy journey through the mind of ordinary people dealing with ordinary things but seen through an extraordinary lens. Whether it’s identity crisis, existentialism, love, belonging, or heartbreak- Kaufman’s writing perfectly captures something inside of us with each and every story. And sometimes when I’m sitting on the couch on a rainy day and looking for something to put me in a lazy, but reflective mood- I turn to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
Eternal Sunshine is the 2004 Academy Award nominated fantasy romantic drama written by Charlie Kaufman and directed by Michael Gondry. The film explores dating as an adult and the inevitable heartbreak that...

Elliott Smith’s pre-solo band, Heatmiser, is back with another previously unreleased single from their forthcoming rarities compilation, The Music of Heatmiser (due on October 6th). Entitled “Bottle Rocket,” the song was recorded in 1992 and is a transportive artifact from the band’s early days. Stream it below.
Originally included on a demo cassette that the band was using to promote themselves during their 1992 tour, “Bottle Rocket” is not only a time-capsule of sorts, but also conveys Heatmiser’s lively energy and undeniable musical chemistry. Beginning with an appropriate amount of grungy, rock riffage, the song’s arrangement opens up to a melodic chorus with a descending chord progression and call-and-response vocals. Over top, lyrics from the band’s Neil Gust carry a feeling of yearning, albeit, a bit esoterically.
As Gust has explained recently, though, those esoteric lyrics had a very specific and personal meaning. Several years prior to writing “Bottle Rocket,...

Get ready to delve into The Music of Heatmiser. The Portland band best known as Elliott Smith’s pre-solo career springboard has announced a new rarities compilation arriving October 6th via Third Man Records, and a demo version of the track “Lowlife” is out now.
Heatmiser initially distributed The Music of Heatmiser — then a 6-song cassette — at local record stores and shows to promote the band before they released their 1993 debut LP, Dead Air. According to co-founding singer-guitarist Neil Gust, this longer package — featuring 23 additional demos, live tracks, rare versions, and previously unreleased songs — came together thanks to drummer Tony Lash.
“Tony found a bunch of forgotten recordings and started mixing them and sending them to me,” Gust said in a statement. “We were struck by the freewheeling energy of the band; you could hear how much fun we were having. In 1992 we could barely afford the studio so it...

Plot: The high-profile case of serial killer Ludovic Chevalier has just gone to trial, and Kelly-Anne is obsessed. When reality blurs with her morbid fantasies, she goes down a dark path to seek the final piece of the puzzle: the missing video of a murdered 13-year-old girl, to whom Kelly-Anne bears a disturbing resemblance.
Review: There’s a certain level of expectation present when Fantasia selects the opening film for their festival. It sets the tone for the rest of the lineup of films so my hopes for Red Rooms were very high. Add to that the fact that the French (even of the Canadian variety) know how to do horror like no other, and I was very excited. Red Rooms hits a nerve almost immediately, diving deep into the trial of serial killer, Ludovic Chevalier. They set up the evidence in such a disturbing way, all without showing you anything.

Elliott Smith Makes Awkward Appearance on ’90s Morning Show with a Puppet in Resurfaced Video: Watch
A video has surfaced of Elliott Smith making an awkward appearance on a ’90s morning show called Breakfast Time, and well, if you’re a fan of Smith, pre-digital time capsules, or just straight-up odd video content, this is a goldmine.
Smith stopped by the FX morning show on July 28th, 1995 to promote his self-titled sophomore album. The video was first uploaded to YouTube in 2019, but recently went viral after clips were shared on reddit this week. Airing from 1994 to 1996, the program was an “informal magazine show” featuring a goofy variety of interviews and segments, and even had a puppet co-host — all of which made it appealing for mainstream American television audiences, but a truly weird choice for the underground icon Smith.

If you ask who the most important Western directors in history are, there are three obvious names: John Ford, Sergio Leone, and Clint Eastwood. The Western was the dominant genre in Hollywood from the 1930s to the 1960s, and Ford was the preeminent director of the genre at that time. Leone spearheaded the Spaghetti Western movement; color films set in the west, but produced in Europe, and which were more violent/less glamorous than their Hollywood counterparts. According to Leone:
"Ford, because of his European origins — as a good Irishman — has always seen the problem from a Christian point of view... his characters and protagonists always [looked] forward to a rosy, fruitful future. Whereas I see the history of the West as really the reign of violence by violence."
Eastwood began as Leone's star and then followed in his old boss' footsteps by becoming a director himself. And where Eastwood truly...

Stan has announced a slew of new local commissions as it ramps up ambitious plans to have around a third of its first-run slate come from original production.
These include Hoodlum Entertainment feature film Christmas on the Farm, Matchbox Pictures drama Bad Behaviour, and a number of projects with Roadshow Rough Diamond, with whom the Nine-owned streamer has extended its partnership. With the latter it is readying a third season of Bump and a spin-off, Year Of, as well as a Gregor Jordan-helmed crime drama, Ironside.
Last year, Stan flagged it intends to invest in more than 30 productions per year within five years, drawing on Nine’s production facilities and co-productions with international partners including Hollywood studios and international networks.
Earlier this month, the service announced a children’s feature film initiative with the Australian Children’s Television Foundation (Actf), and it has a lengthy list of upcoming local projects...

The 16th annual Final Draft Awards took place on Tuesday, March 2, during an online ceremony. Hosted by Final Draft president Shelly Mellot, the first female appointed in the 30-year history, many awards contenders in the writing categories were honored in both film and television.
While accepting the award, Sorkin said, “the Zeitgeist crashed into us” and that he had no idea how much about today “The Trial of the Chicago 7” would end up being. This was an added boost to his awards campaign after winning the Golden Globe last Sunday for best screenplay.
Also, Final Draft announced the 2020 Big Break® Screenwriting Contest winners, which received over 10,000 submissions from writers worldwide, a record number for the organization.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Thursday revealed the 366 feature films that are eligible for consideration at the 93rd Oscars, which are set to air April 25 live on ABC.
The total number of films is up from last year’s 344 films in contention.
This year’s list was compiled based on tweaked eligibility rules implemented because of the coronavirus pandemic, which has pushed the ceremony to its latest date ever. For this year, feature films had to open by February 28 in a commercial motion picture theater for a seven-day qualifying run in at least one of six metro areas: Los Angeles County, New York City, the Bay Area, Chicago, Miami and Atlanta. Drive-in theaters open nightly were included as qualifying venues, as were films intended for theatrical release but because of the lockdown made available first via streaming, VOD service or other broadcast.

A spurned young woman’s urge to retaliate becomes subsumed by an oddly intense affair
There is some interesting material in Clementine, but it is an indulgent mood piece, unfocused and unfinished, and one that feels like an idea for a short film, but stretched out to feature length. Otmara Marrero plays Karen, a woman deeply hurt at being dumped by her older, wealthier lover D (Sonya Walger), who has moreover kept Karen’s beloved dog, Ramsey. In an angry, confused and vengeful mood, Karen drives to D’s beautiful lake house, where they had spent so much blissful time together, and breaks in – just to hang out, or somehow to assert herself. But here she encounters Lana (Sydney Sweeney), a disconcertingly smart, beautiful woman sunbathing by the lake, and a weirdly intense relationship develops between the two of them.

Paul Greengrass’ western drama “New of the World” starring Tom Hanks and Helena Zengel is gaining traction during this pandemic awards season despite the fact that sagebrush sagas often get short shrift at the Oscars. Only three traditional Westerns — 1931’s “Cimarron,” 1990’s “Dances with Wolves” and 1992’s “Unforgiven” — and one contemporary Western (2007’s “No Country for Old Men”) have won the Best Picture Oscar.
Among the oaters to be nominated for the top prize at the Academy Awards: John Ford’s 1939 “Stagecoach,” William A. Wellman’s 1943 “The Ox-Bow Incident,” Fred Zinnemann’s 1952’s “High Noon” (Gary Cooper won the Oscar for Best Actor), George Stevens’ 1953 “Shane”; 1960’s “The Alamo;” 1962’s “How the West Was Won”; and George Roy Hill’s 1969’s “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.”

Edgar Ramirez is set to star alongside Jessica Chastain in Lucía Puenzo’s directorial effort, Losing Clementine. The film, an adaptation of the novel by Ashley Ream adapted by Ann Cherkis (Better Call Saul), was among those chosen for the California Film and Television Tax Credit. The film begins shooting in Los Angeles in Janaury.
Chastain plays world-renowned artist and sharp-tongued wit Clementine Pritchard. She is bipolar and with her 36th birthday rapidly approaching, she’s decided she’s done. After flushing away her meds, she gives herself thirty days to tie up loose ends—to finish one last painting, make nice with her ex-husband, and find a new home for her cat. Through humor and wit, she checks the tasks off her To-Do list, however, she uncovers secrets about her family and the tragedy that befell her mother and sister. In an ending no one will see coming, will...

Though movie theaters still remain closed in most parts of the world, it’s not like there’s been a shortage of new content to keep folks entertained. And you can mostly thank the various streaming services for that.
Be it Netflix’s The Old Guard delivering action-packed thrills, Hulu’s Palm Springs bringing the laughs or Prime’s 7500 offering up a gripping watch, there’s been a ton of big new films on the small screen lately that have been making up for the lack of theatrical releases. But it’s not only the streamers who are bringing the goods.
On demand has been pretty hot for fresh titles, too, and there are a whopping 13 new movies that released via Amazon Video, iTunes, Vudu, etc., this weekend. Be it Lucy Hale’s enjoyable romantic comedy A Nice Girl Like You, intriguing sci-fi flick Archive or Donnie Yen’s action-comedy Enter the Fat Dragon,...

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: What better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? This week […]

before it kills her, Lara Jean Gallagher’s “Clementine” begins with an intimate little scene that shadows the rest of the movie. We meet Karen (Otmara Marrero) in some iPhone footage that her unseen ex-girlfriend shot in bed one morning — a loving, needy close-up. “Wake up, I need inspiration,” a sober English voice intones from off-screen. “You’re beautiful. You’re so young.” And then: “You’re going to break my heart.”
Karen replies that she’s “never broken one single heart,” but her response isn’t reassuring. On the contrary, it lingers in the air like an omen. And the more that she loses sight of herself during Gallagher’s loaded but unfulfilled debut feature, the more those words seem to explain her problem. Karen naturally defaulted to a recipient role in her relationship with a much older artist — she was the object of affection, more seen than seeing.

Annette Bening, Bill Nighy and Josh O’ Connor are ready to deal with some serious family issues in the drama Hope Gap. Screen Media Ventures and Roadside Attractions released the film today on digital platforms after having to pivot from their originally planned March 5 theatrical release due to the pandemic –because the show must go on.
Directed by Oscar-nominated screenwriter William Nicholson and based on his Tony Award-nominated play, The Retreat From Moscow, Hope Gap made its world premiere at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival before hitting the festival circuit.
Hope Gap follows the lives of Grace (Bening) and Edward (Nighy), who have been married for 29 years, as they navigate through stages of shock, disbelief and anger, to a place of hope. They live in a small seaside town near a cove under the cliffs called Hope Gap — hence the title of the film. When their son Jamie (O’Connor...

Writer-director Lara Jean Gallagher’s “Clementine” resides willfully in the spaces between loss and desire, anger and reckoning, trust and suspicion, often to unnerving effect. A viewer would be right to wonder, is this visually canny story of a young woman who heads to her ex-lover’s empty lake house a coming-of-age meditation or a psychosexual thriller? Breakup drama or simmering horror flick outing?
Gallagher rebuffs easy answers in “Clementine,” which had its premiere at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival and opens May 8 on virtual screens thanks to the nimble maneuvering of distributor Oscilloscope Pictures.
Karen (Otmara Marrero) leaves Los Angeles and heads into the woods — yes, figuratively, too — of Oregon after a thwarted attempt to get their dog from her lover’s home. We don’t see this ex, who goes by D, so much as hear her. She’s the voice at the start of the film, telling Karen...

"Are you gonna break my heart?" "I've never broken one single heart." Oscilloscope Labs has unveiled an official trailer for an indie film titled Clementine, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Lara Jean Gallagher, who grew up in rural Pennsylvania. This premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival last year, and will debut as a "virtual cinema" release this month. In this "moody and mysterious narrative feature," a scenic lake house becomes a sanctuary for two young women. Karen is just out of a long-term relationship and sneaks into her ex's summer home. There she meets the precocious Lana, whose "bold charisma" is a welcome distraction. Soon something sparks between them. "Equal parts psychological thriller and sexual coming-of-age story, Clementine is a tense rumination on who to love and how to let go." Starring a small cast with Otmara Marrero, Sydney Sweeney, Will Brittain, & Sonya Walger. Looks quite seductive. Here's...

We’re introduced to Karen (Otmara Marrero) in bed as her older girlfriend D. (Sonya Walger) wakes her. While the former wants to sleep in, the latter seeks inspiration for a new canvas and wants her prized possession to be a willing participant towards that need. This is why D. tells her lover that her youth scares her by ruminating aloud about how Karen will inevitably break her heart. Rather than say it out of belief, however, she speaks those words to sink her claws in deeper. She’s deflecting from the fact that she’ll eventually break Karen’s instead, letting her feel secure by projecting an image of power that doesn’t exist. It’s therefore no surprise to learn that when Karen mourns their sudden break-up, D. has already moved on.

With film festivals increasingly looking for films from underrepresented voices in recent years, one byproduct of the coronavirus-prompted theater closings is that movies coming out of those festivals from minorities, women and the Lgbt community have found themselves going to VOD or streaming rather than theaters.
In the last couple of weeks alone, that has meant virtual premieres for the debut features from Tayarisha Poe (“Selah and the Spades”), Sonejuhi Sinha (“Stray Dolls”) and Andrew Onwubolu (“Blue Story”), as well as the first feature in 15 years from Alice Wu (“The Half of It”) and the first theatrical film in 24 years from Coky Giedroyc (“How to Build a Girl”).

Halsey has dropped a new single, “You Should Be Sad,” along with an accompanying music video directed by Colin Tilley.
In the clip, the singer heads to an underground country western nightclub, where a lot of beautiful people are line-dancing. The musician, wearing only a bikini and a cowboy hat, joins in as she sings the emotionally wrought pop song. The video references several other female artists, from Lady Gaga to Shania Twain to Christina Aguilera.
“The most petty and heartbreaking songs all come from country,” Halsey shared on Twitter.

Halsey took a “less is more” approach with her colorful version of “Graveyard” at the 2019 American Music Awards on Sunday. The singer busted out a captivating performance using only paint, a white stage, a table, a fellow dancer and some simple, intimate choreography.
The vocalist and her doppelgänger-dancer ran in place, sprawled out on the table and smeared each other in pink, blue, red and yellow hues in a kind of intimate mirror-dance. By the end of the electro-pop single — which appears on her upcoming album Manic — the entire stage was a paint-covered mess.

“Euphoria” star Sydney Sweeney and “Detective Pikachu” actor Justice Smith have been cast in “The Voyeurs,” an indie currently in production from Amazon Studios.
The film, which will debut exclusively on Amazon Prime Video, is the first in a planned series of “sexy date night” thrillers that studio chief Jennifer Salke promised earlier this year for subscribers.
“The Voyeurs” follows a young couple (Sweeney and Smith) who move into their dream apartment, only to find their windows look directly into a unit across the street — a volatile and attractive couple who captivate the pair. When they attempt to anonymously intercede in their lives, they unwittingly set in motion a chain of events that will lead to disaster.

Halsey showcased her recent single “Graveyard” as part of the MTV EMAs in Seville, Spain, offering a fantasy-themed performance of the track.
The performance opened with the singer lying in an overgrown field, singing as she writhed in the dirt, before she danced onto a carousel horse in the center of the floral-covered stage.
“Graveyard” comes off Halsey’s upcoming album Manic, which is out January 17th via Capitol. She has released two videos for the track, including a time-lapse visualizer of the singer painting a self portrait on a large canvas over several hours.

Halsey performed her new single “Graveyard” on Wednesday’s Ellen, transforming an ordinary bedroom into a trippy digital realm.
The singer opens her song draped across a vanity, staring into the mirror as the electro-pop track begins. After the first chorus hit, she stands up and launches into choreographed moves, including a series of spins, jerky movements and copious crawling. In an unexpected visual twist, she peers through a doorframe into a computerized landscape of floating shapes.

Halsey gets sucked into a world of her own making in her new video for “Graveyard,” off of upcoming album Manic, out January 17th. She previously released a time-lapse visualizer for the song in September.

Halsey celebrated her 25th birthday Sunday with the surprise release of the new video for “Clementine,” the latest single off her upcoming album Manic.
The visual, choreographed and co-directed by Dani Vitale, finds the singer born Ashley Frangipane and her brother Sevian dancing inside the viewing gallery of an aquarium, with the large blue fish tank serving as a background for the almost-vaudevillian routine.
“Clementine” follows the release of the Manic single “Graveyard“; the singer’s third album is due out January 17th, 2020.
