The book is far from closed on Matthew Perry’s death
Over six months after the Friends star died and was laid to rest in LA’s Forest Lawn Memorial Park, the Los Angeles Police Department and the federal Drug Enforcement Agency are still looking into what happened last October.
“There is an open investigation with the DEA,” an LAPD spokesperson told Deadline today.
Found in a hot tub, Perry died October 28 at age 54 at his home in Los Angeles. On December 15, 2023, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office declared that Perry passed away from the “acute effects of ketamine.” The autopsy report also cited drowning, coronary artery disease and the effects of buprenorphine — a drug used to treat opioid use disorder — as contributing to his death.
After confirming the joint investigation with the DEA earlier Tuesday,, the LAPD has just issued a more formal statement:

CAA has come on board to advise on the worldwide sales of “Pleasant Outcast,” the post-apocalyptic Korean thriller series from Lotte Cultureworks (“Along With the Gods: The Last 49 Days”) and Climax Studio. “Pleasant Outcast” is set to premiere at Canneseries, which kicks off April 5.

Monday’s Emmys ceremony paid tribute to late Friends star Matthew Perry — but in a night filled with nostalgic reunions, his Friends castmates were nowhere to be found.
The producers did reach out to Perry’s Friends co-stars to participate, but “it’s still very fresh for them,” executive producer Jeannae Rouzan-Clay tells The Hollywood Reporter. “We had talked about it early on,” executive producer Jesse Collins adds, “but I can imagine, from their side, they’re mourning someone who was still very close to them. I can’t speak for them, but we all have to respect that they were their own family.

Friends star Matthew Perry died from “acute effects of ketamine,” the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office said today. The autopsy report also cited drowning, coronary artery disease and the effects of buprenorphine — a drug used to treat opioid use disorder — as contributing to his death.
Ketamine is a drug used recreationally that dulls pain, causes forgetfulness, intoxication, disassociation and euphoria. It is also increasingly used under medical supervision to treat depression.
The manner of death was ruled an accident. Perry died October 28 at his home in the Pacific Palisades area of Los Angeles. He was 54.
Friends ran from 1994-2004, co-starring Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, David Schwimmer, Matt LeBlanc and Lisa Kudrow. Perry played Chandler Bing on the Manhattan-set sitcom, which was one of the most-watched shows on U.S. primetime.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office on Sunday released its first report on Matthew Perry, who died Saturday at age 54.
Perry was discovered unresponsive in a hot tub at his Los Angeles home around 4 p.m. Saturday, law enforcement sources told The Los Angeles Times.
On Sunday, the coroner’s office updated its case online, saying that the cause of death had been “deferred.” That typically means an autopsy has been completed but the examiner needs more time and additional investigation into the death.
“Deferred means that after an autopsy, a cause of death has not been determined and the medical examiner is requesting more investigation into the death, including additional studies,” a spokesperson for the department previously explained, when the coroner deferred the case of death for Lisa Marie Presley, who died in January. “Once the tests/studies come back, the doctor evaluates the case again and...

For an entire generation, Matthew Perry was the personification of sublime wit and effortless ease with one-liners, thanks to his role as the hapless Chandler Bing on “Friends.”
Among the show’s male stars, Ross (David Schwimmer) was the goofy one and Joey (Matt LeBlanc) was the charming one. But Chandler, he was the witty one. And while ably aided by the NBC hit comedy’s writing, it was Perry’s masterful technique wringing as many laughs as possible out of a punchline that helped elevate the character into TV’s pantheon of all-time greats.
With his sudden death Saturday at age 54 following what appeared to be an accidental drowning, the world mourns the loss of a troubled actor who gave it so much joy and genuine laughter. In many ways, his passing also signals the unquestionable end of an era. The cast of “Friends” is no longer whole. And...

As an actor, Matthew Perry was nominated for four Emmys. He was a regular in the generation-defining ensemble smash Friends and, as a guest star, seamlessly integrated into the spectacular ensemble on shows like The West Wing and The Good Wife.
The show that best understood Perry’s sensibility and, more than that, the essence of what he projected best onscreen may not have been one of his signature successes, and may not be one of the first half-dozen shows that heartbroken fans look back on as we reflect on Perry, who died this weekend at 54. Empirically, it wasn’t a success at all.
Go On ran for 22 episodes on NBC between 2012 and 2013 and was canceled after that lone season. It has fans — any show with an ensemble that included Tyler James Williams, Laura Benanti, Brett Gelman, Sarah Baker, John Cho and more is going to find fans — but only a small audience.

An Jae-hoon’s Contrechamps Jury Prize-winning film “Shaman Sorceress” premiered at Annecy 2020. Originally planned for the silver screen but instead splashed across computer monitors, the film’s reception has been severely muted — which is a shame, considering the its unprecedented qualities. In this animated musical about a sexually promiscuous medium in the Joseon era, “Shaman Sorceress” tests the boundaries of Korean culture wars.
The film begins with Nang-yi, a deaf daughter with an eye for ink painting. She and her beautiful mother, Mowha (Sonya) live in disgrace. Mowha scrapes a living between her alcoholic tendencies and sexual escapades by serving as the local exorcist. One day, Nang-yi’s long-lost, handsome brother, Woo-kyi (Kim Dae-hyun) — originally sent away to study at a Buddhist temple — returns many years later as a Jesuit pastor-in-training. No matter your opinion of Ross Geller, the actor behind him is an objectively deft comic performer. David Schwimmer only got better during his decade-long, career-making time on “Friends,” and that we haven’t seen him starring in a half-hour comedy since 2004 speaks more to the artist’s varying interests than anything else (be it a collective dislike of the character forever tied to his image or a personal disinterest in the genre).
Enter “Intelligence,” Schwimmer’s return to TV comedy via NBCUniversal’s new streaming service, Peacock. It’s not exactly an orchestrated comeback. The six-episode first season was originally made for the U.K.’s Sky One and already aired overseas in February, making it less Schwimmer’s version of “Cougar Town” or “Mr. Sunshine” — big ticket broadcast series billed as the star’s return to network sitcoms — than a smaller series befitting the actor’s ever-widening focus.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday.
This week’s question: In honor of the 25th anniversary of “Friends,” who is your favorite character on the show? Why?
Eric Deggans (@deggans), NPR
For a TV critic with some, um, seniority, it is odd to go from covering Friends as a contemporary TV show to covering it as a nostalgia phenomenon. So my feelings about “Friends” characters have gone through an evolution. When the show started, I liked David Schwimmer’s Ross Geller the most. Hard to remember now, but he was the most established actor when the show started, particularly following a well-received guest role on “NYPD Blue,” and I felt his character on “Friends” was the most developed in the early days of the show.
Eventually, toward the end of the run, I came to like Lisa Kudrow’s Phoebe more,...

Thomas Schlamme has been elected for a second term as the Directors Guild of America president. This will mark his second, two-year term, which is typically the extent of a DGA presidency.
On Saturday, during the guild’s convention at DGA headquarters in Los Angeles, Schlamme was selected by acclamation of 155 delegates, representing more than 18,000 members.
“It is my honor to once again accept the position of President of the Directors Guild of America,” Schlamme said in a statement. “It’s a privilege I don’t take lightly. We’re in a time of immense change, and the next few years will be critical for the DGA and for our industry. I am focused and ready to lead us through our next negotiations, and to ensure that the creative and economic rights of directors and their teams are protected for years to come. And I am fortunate that serving alongside me is a dedicated,...

South Korea’s largest wireless service provider Sk Telecom, together with The Seoul Broadcasting System (Sbs), Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation (Mbc) and Korean Broadcasting System (Kbs) have teamed up and signed a memorandum of understanding to launch a local video streaming platform – Over The Top (Ott) – to compete with Us streaming mega-platforms like YouTube or Netflix.
When Netflix entered South Korea in 2016 it was considered only a small threat because of its lack of Korean contents. However last year the American giant invested something close to Us$8 billion in original country-specific content, giving space and funding to local talents and consequently reached almost a million users in September 2018. Products like Bong Joon-ho’s “Okja” and “Mr. Sunshine” have proved extremely successful, with “Mr. Sunshine” becaming the country’s highest-rated show of the year and probably more success is on the way with the next zombie period drama “Kingdom” and Europe-based series...

HBO’s Divorce is making a big commitment to James Lesure, tapping the actor to join the Season 3 cast as a potential love interest for leading lady Sarah Jessica Parker.
HBO confirmed Lesure’s casting, although the cabler declined to offer additional details about his recurring character.
Divorce was renewed for a third season last fall, but the order was for just six episodes (down from Season 1’s 10 and Season 2’s 8). The series also underwent a big change behind-the-scenes, with Liz Tuccillo (Sex and the City) taking over the showrunner/Ep reins from Season 2 boss Jenny Bicks.
