This post contains mild spoilers for "M3GAN."
Gerard Johnstone may not have the same name recognition as other members of the "M3GAN" creative team, like producer James Wan or star Allison Williams, but the New Zealand director is a favorite of fans of horror comedies, thanks to his 2014 debut feature, "Housebound." Although he's been directing shows like "Terry Teo" and "The New Legends of Monkey," Johnstone is making his highly-anticipated return to horror features with the Blumhouse killer doll flick that the world can't stop talking about. As /Film's Jeff Ewing said in his review of the film, "M3GAN" is a "thoroughly enjoyable blast of a film from the first frame to last, demanding to be seen in a packed theater of eager viewers."

This week, actors such as Simon Baker, Bryan Brown and Marta Dusseldorp were in Canberra. Their aim was to convince parliament to introduce rules requiring streaming services such as Netflix and Disney+ to spend 20 per cent of their local revenue on new Australian drama, documentary and children’s content.
Many of Australia’s film and television organisations see local content rules as a key way of tackling significant changes that have disrupted business norms and revenue streams. The Federal Government has indicated it supports quotas for some services at least.
Requirements on global services seem an easy answer — and who doesn’t want more Australian TV? — but this call ignores complex realities of how the TV business and its funding have changed.
Before exploring the key differences of 21st century television, let’s consider why pursuing content requirements on streaming services is a high risk, low reward campaign.

Aunty Donna’s Big Ol’ House of Fun, Stateless, Love on The Spectrum and The New Legends of Monkey proved the most popular Australian titles on Netflix this year, both locally and globally.
Aunty Donna’s sketch comedy was particularly notable for spending almost two weeks in the Australian top ten while also trending in the US following its release in November.
However, it was the story of an American in the French capital that was crowned the most popular comedy series for the year, with Emily in Paris fulfilling the travel void for Australians in lockdown.
Other patterns to come out of the viewing data, taken from January until the end of November, include a rise in the popularity of Korean content in Australia, with shows such as Kingdom S2, The King: Eternal Monarch, and it’s Okay to Not Be Okay contributing to a doubling of viewing hours...

For the first time in a while, Netflix is adding no new titles today, so let’s instead take the opportunity to recap what’s gone up on the streaming site over the past week, from Saturday, August 1st to Saturday, August 8th. As that encompasses the first day of the month, there was a huge amount of fresh content added to Netflix’s library over this period. To be exact, there were 49 movies and 24 TV shows.
On the film side of things, this haul includes many an acclaimed or cult favorite flick from across the decades in all kinds of genres. The highlight is probably the entire Jurassic Park trilogy, which has proved popular with Netflix users as the first two entries have been hanging around the top 10 most-watched movies list almost ever since arriving. 80s classic fantasy flick The NeverEnding Story and its sequel were added on the 1st as well,...

Netflix has added a sizeable haul of new titles to its library today just in time for the weekend. There are 12 new movies and TV shows up on the streaming service this Friday, August 7th, and interestingly, they’re almost all Netflix Originals. It’s a particularly great day for animation fans as well, as two of the site’s popular animated series have had their latest seasons drop today.
First up, Australian/New Zealand co-production The New Legends of Monkey debuted its first season on Netflix all the way back in April 2018, so this second season has taken a long time in getting here. Then there’s Wizards: Tales of Arcadia, the third and final installment in Guillermo del Toro’s animated fantasy shared universe which includes Trollhunters and 3Below.
Check out the full list of everything that’s just arrived on Netflix below:

For the week of August 3rd to August 9th, the streaming platform are releasing even more, with Guillermo del Toro’s Wizards: Tales of Arcadia on the way, as well as timely documentary Immigration Nation and many other titles in what’s looking to be another busy week for the company.
Wizards is the third in del Toro’s successful trilogy of CGI science-fiction series for Netflix, following on from Trollhunters and 3Below, which have collectively produced five seasons of episodes to date. The respective series all focus on supernatural events in the small town of Arcadia Oaks, with the new outing moving the action to medieval Camelot. Wizards will be available to watch from August 7th.

Netflix has debuted the first trailer for the upcoming season 2 of ‘The New Legends of Monkey’.
Season 2 sees fallen God, Monkey, and his band of fellow misfits, Tripitaka, Sandy and Pigsy back for more adventures, continuing their search for the sacred scrolls they need in order to overcome the chaos of demon rule in their kingdom.
Following their Emmy-winning adventures in series one, where the team escaped Jade Mountain with the Scroll of Immortality, their next step sees them looking to get their hands on the Scroll of Knowledge, hidden in the ‘Infinite Archive’, and then journey on to find five more sacred scrolls scattered across the world.
In this season they must battle scroll guardians, wicked demons and legions of demon warlords in the hope of gathering seven scrolls to take to the distant Western Mountains in order to empower the gods’ resistance. Inspired by the victories of Monkey and his companions,...

Netflix is adding a seriously impressive line-up of content across August. In a bid to keep you indoors and out of the sun, the streaming giant has got a wide range of titles coming to its library next month, including various highly-anticipated original movies and TV shows, as well as countless beloved films that are being added – or are returning – to the site.
We’ve previously had a couple of updates on what to expect in August, but this is the full official list of everything that’s due on Netflix over the course of next month. As we already knew, some of the highlights include Jamie Foxx superhero vehicle Project Power and the fifth and penultimate season of DC’s Lucifer. Now, however, we can see there’s a lot more to look forward to besides just that.
The first day of August, in particular, brings a whole heap of titles.

Now that we’re two thirds of the way through July, we’ve got a pretty good idea of what’s coming to Netflix next month. New titles are being added all the time and while some days remain lacking in content at present, on the whole we know what to expect on the streaming service in August. As always, there’s a huge variety, too, from foreign titles to documentaries to new TV series to much-anticipated Netflix originals.
Some of the more notable additions to the line-up that have been added since it was first announced last week include 2003’s Seabiscuit, the jockey drama starring Tobey Maguire, and the next season of Transformers Rescue Bots Academy, both coming on the first day of the month. And remember, this is far from the full list of new arrivals for August, as it only encompasses what’s been announced so far,...

We’re only halfway through July, but we already know much of what’s coming to Netflix in August. Obviously, plenty more titles will be announced as the month draws nearer, but there’s still a bunch of highly anticipated movies and TV shows already on the schedule.
Just today, we got our first trailer for one of them – the streaming giant’s new superhero action flick, Project Power, starring Jamie Foxx and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, that’s based around a mysterious pill that imbues whoever takes it with superpowers for a total of five minutes. That’s dropping on August 14th.
Before that, however, the first day of the month brings Killing Hasselhoff, Netflix’s new comedy movie starring David Hasselhoff himself and Ken Jeong as a nightclub owner who has to resort to desperate measures to pay off a loan shark. It was originally supposed to land on July...

Amid massive nervousness about the future of movies, the American Film Market opens its 40th edition Wednesday at the Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel. The market runs through Nov. 13.
Southern California weather will deliver sunshine for the 7,000-plus attendees. And organizers of the Afm — the Independent Film and Television Alliance — sent out a message last week that Santa Monica was far away from the wildfires that hit Southern California during the last week of October.
“We would like to assure you that there are no fires in Santa Monica,” Afm said in a message. “Some media have referred to fires in the ‘Santa Monica Mountains.’ This mountain range is actually in Los Angeles, miles from Santa Monica. There is no threat to the Santa Monica business area.”

Some $1.17 billion was spent on drama production in Australia in the last financial year – the second highest year on record and more than 50 per cent up on the previous year – driven by all-time high expenditure on local content and significantly bolstered levels of foreign spend.
That’s according Screen Australia’s annual Drama Report, released today, which details expenditure on all local and foreign drama production, across film, TV, and online, as well in post-production, digital and visual effects (Pdv).
A record $768 million was spent on local projects in 2018-19, driven by a record $334 million expenditure in TV drama, as well as a five-year high spend on features at $229 million. Children’s TV drama is also at a 10 year high at $95 million across 15 projects; a 95 per cent increase on last year.

Cinematographer D.J. Stipsen admits he was surprised to receive an Emmy nomination for “What We Do in the Shadows.” “The premise of the show is to make it look as mockumentary as possible,” he explains. “So it’s not going to be a D.O.P. showreel kind of thing.” Nevertheless, it looks like voters “loved all the hard work” that went into it. Watch our exclusive video interview with Stipsen above.

The founders of the production company responsible for The Kings Speech and Top of the Lake, as well as Steve McQueen’s forthcoming heist drama, reveal the challenges of film-making in the streaming age
Anticipation is high for Widows, the new film from British director Steve McQueen, which opened the BFI London film festival on Wednesday. Not only is it a new release from one of the UK’s most renowned film-makers, but it is the latest pitch for box office and awards success by a new breed of film production companies – or “content providers”, as they now term themselves.
See-Saw Films, the company behind Widows, was founded in 2008 by Iain Canning and Emile Sherman. It has made awards-friendly dramas such as The Kings Speech and Lion, TV series such as Top of the Lake, music videos for Kanye West and the Netflix fantasy show The New Legends of Monkey.

One of the great untapped resources in world cinema is Chinese literature. While there are plenty of films based on various eras of this literature that will be familiar to Asian audiences, there are only a select few internationally recognized films that hail from this material. Plenty of movies still promote and/or celebrate Chinese culture and history, even if they somehow do so with varying degrees of inaccuracy. For instance, we’re soon to see a live action remake of the animated Disney picture “Mulan,” supposedly with a whole new storyline. But a major international film based on actual Chinese material would be more significant, and probably better.
So, whether it ultimately comes from Hollywood or a Chinese studio, we have a few ideas for source material for a fresh blockbuster based on real history, culture, and/or literature.

No TV conversation is complete anymore without the Netflix behemoth, as the service adds entire seasons to its never-ending pile on a weekly basis. While recently putting together a roundup of every TV review IndieWire has published in 2018, we came to the realization that it would probably take a lifetime to get through all the shows released in this calendar year alone.
Netflix has said it will spend upwards of $8 billion annually in programming costs. Granted, some of that goes to acquisition of previously produced content — but CFO David Wells has said Netflix will produce as much as 700 originals worldwide this year. That’s a lot of TV.
In 2017, Netflix ended the year by reporting that users watched more than 140 million hours of content per day, or 1 billion hours per week. But that’s a collective stat. To put a solid number on how much of our lives Netflix has been vying for,...

Inspired by the Japanese television drama Monkey (1978-80), which in turn was based on the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West, the Netflix series The New Legends of Monkey starts off with a lot of cultural baggage, which it casually flings off by the end of its first episode. As in the Japanese show, the Australian series features a woman in a lead role as Tripitaka, a young priest who releases Monkey, aka The Monkey King, after 500 years of imprisonment. They journey to the West in search of holy scriptures and have many adventures, accompanied by Sandy and Pigsy, two gods who have kept their true natures in hiding. The original Japanese series was evidently quite popular in Australia, and so the new...

“I am the Monkey King. Who in the Seven Hells are you supposed to be?”
That question could apply to everyone in Netflix’s “The New Legends of Monkey,” which has given a significant cosmetic update to the story in the 16th-century Chinese novel “Journey to the West” by Wu Cheng’en. In the adaptation, the four main characters include two who have been gender-flipped from the original tale and none who are played by Chinese actors at all, which had sparked criticism of whitewashing earlier in production and which this review will address later.
Mainstream American audiences may not be quite as familiar with the original tale as viewers in Australia, whence this new adaptation hails. Aussie kids grew up with a late-‘70s version from Japan, known as “Monkey” or “Monkey Magic” in its BBC dubbed format. The TV team at See-Saw Films is working on a diverse mix of upcoming projects.
Top Of The Lake has come to define the work of See-Saw’s TV team, in the same way The King’s Speech did for their film division.
The first series of Jane Campion and Gerard Lee’s crime drama was nominated for five Emmys, two Golden Globes (with star Elisabeth Moss winning best miniseries actress) and best drama at the Baftas.
Led by head of television Jamie Laurenson (pictured below, left) and COO, television Hakan Kousetta (below, right), the independent production house pursue prestigious TV projects, often with film directors, and always with “people who have something to say and have a vision”, says Laurenson.
The duo are supported by television development executive Patrick Walters, Australia based producer Rachel Gardner and La-based VP of creative affairs (USA) Negin Salmasi, who works across both TV and film.

The duo are supported by television development executive Patrick Walters, Australia based producer Rachel Gardner and La-based VP of creative affairs (USA) Negin Salmasi, who works across both TV and film.
