Ruth Wilson is mesmerising as an unhappy benefits officer who develops an unhealthy attraction to a charismatic stranger in Harry Wootliff’s assured psychological drama
After her wonderfully engrossing feature debut, Only You, writer-director Harry Wootliff turns to a rather more toxic relationship, balancing elements of romantic melodrama and psychological thriller in a film powered by modern gothic passions. Loosely adapted from Deborah Kay Davies’s book True Things About Me, it’s a disturbingly seductive (and often unexpectedly funny) portrayal of manipulation and deceit that gets right under the skin of its protagonist, brilliantly played by Ruth Wilson, who walks a tightrope between enchantment and endangerment. With great physical poise and precision, Wilson (who optioned and developed the source book) engages the audience on a visceral level, her deceptively low-key performance taking us deep inside her character’s dreams, desires and insecurities.

Ruth Wilson and Tom Burke are formidable in this tale of emotional self-harm, but elements of the film remain unconvincing
Harry Wootliff is the film-maker who in 2018 gave us the wonderfully tender and well-observed grownup love story Only You with Josh O’Connor and Laia Costa. Now she is back with another complex relationship, a humidly intense tale of amour fou, submission and emotional self-harm, adapted from Deborah Kay Davies’s novel True Things About Me. This is a well-acted movie with accomplished set-piece scenes of eroticism and residual, unfulfilled yearning. But sometimes it feels like the ambient atmosphere and performances are going nowhere. The characterisation isn’t as complex or as searching as it was in Only You, and in its third act the plot signs off with a lame and implausible resolution.

Two long weeks ago we saw one of the worst snatch game performances in Drag Race her-story with only one of the queens doing a good job. This came as a total surprise as everyone online had been talking about how talented this group of queens are! Last week however the cast were given the opportunity to redeem themselves in a lip-sync smackdown tournament which delivered some incredible performances throughout. Everyone is still talking about That lip-sync between Lady Camden and Bosco to “Don’t Let Go” which was filmed perfectly. There was a moment when the camera focussed on Lady Camden during the emotionally driven song but we could still see Bosco in the background also delivering a great performance. This was a masterpiece of cinematography and is something that we need to see more of from Drag Race in the future! We also saw a slightly more positive side...

On last Friday’s 11th episode of “RuPaul’s Drag Race 14,” the bottom seven queens that failed to impress during the “Snatch Game” were thrown into the storm of a “Lipsync Lalaparuza Smackdown” to determine which of them would be sent home. Over the course of the night, the seven queens faced off in six lipsync head-to-heads. Each week on “The Pit Stop,” Monét X Change runs down the tricks and trades of the newest episode of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” with a guest host. Following Friday’s eleventh episode, Monét welcomed the “All Stars 6” lipsync smackdown standout Silky Nutmeg Ganache to give her first hand experience perspective to season 14’s “Lipsync Lalaparuza Smackdown.” Watch the full episode above via the official RuPaul’s Drag Race channel on YouTube.
In their recap, Monét and Silky weigh in on the continuing story of Daya Betty‘s attitude toward the other girls. Silky agreed with Monét’s previously expressed opinion that Daya is giving good television, but that in this argument with Jasmine Kennedie about “no offense” that Daya was out of line and Jasmine was right about speaking up. They liked that Jasmine got to get something else off her chest by choosing to go against Daya in the lipsync,...

In the first round, Daya bested Jasmine after choosing the one song from the list that she thought she could embody the emotion of, “Respect.” As Daya suspected, the song did not fit with Jasmine’s dancer background, but Daya’s ability to remain at the front of the stage, often in front of Jasmine altogether, likely clinched her the win.

In episode 10 of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” season 14, DeJa Skye finally notched a challenge win in an instantly iconic “Snatch Game” episode. It’s a familiar story: Girl meets boy. She, who does not know herself well yet, finds his performed confidence, and the rudeness masked as honesty, attractive. His emotional distance is alluring. While actor David Oyelowo had been toying with the idea of directing, it wasn’t until “The Water Man” — out May 7 — that the opportunity arose for him to step behind the camera.
Oyelowo, who starred in last year’s “The Midnight Sky,” felt the family entertainment films of the ’80s were missing from the industry today. As a father of four, he wanted to mimic the films that he had grown up on. “I loved Steven Spielberg movies,” the actor-turned-director says. He missed films such as “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” and “The Goonies” that sparked conversation and “didn’t speak down to me.”
Emma Needell’s script for “The Water Man” had previously been on the Black List and soon came his way. Oyelowo jumped on board to produce the film and act in it, but it was Needell who suggested that he helm the film and make his feature directorial debut.

A highlight of last year’s New Directors/New Films, Alberdi’s immensely entertaining and wildly funny film starts out as an investigation into a specific place and slowly evolves into something much larger. Tsai Ming-liang's Walker (2012) and No No Sleep (2015) are showing on Mubi starting September 19, 2020 in many countries in a double bill.Above: Journey to the WestTsai Ming-liang once described his interest in the seventh-century monk Chen Xuanzang as an “obsession.” Popularized in the classic Ming dynasty novel Journey to the West, the monk made a pilgrimage along the Silk Road, to India, which ended up taking seventeen years. As Tsai recounts, “There was no car, no train, no airplane, and no cell phone. He just walked.” The novel paints Xuanzang as a foot servant obeying the orders of the imperial court, but for Tsai he is a “rebel.” In earlier historical documents—the inspiration for Tsai’s series of Walker films—Xuanzang defies the state’s travel ban because he believes the Buddhist sutras must be translated from Sanskrit and imported to China. Tsai told another interviewer that Xuanzang was “one...

When Bryan Fogel premiered his new, politically charged documentary “The Dissident” at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, he called on potential buyers to “stand up to Saudi Arabia” and show their support for freedom of speech.
Now, nearly eight months after it debuted to strong reviews, “The Dissident” has found its distributor in Briarcliff Entertainment. The film entered Sundance as one of the hotter acquisition targets due largely to the fact that Fogel won an Oscar for his most recent effort, the Russian doping documentary “Icarus.” The extended wait for a deal and the relatively low profile of the buyer, a newbie in the indie film space, may indicate that more established studios were wary of touching a film that probes the murder of Jamal Khashoggi. According to the CIA, the Washington Post journalist was reportedly killed and dismembered at the order of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman...

En Vogue will be musical guests on the March 17 episode of “Empire,” which also happens to be star Taraji P. Henson’s directorial debut of the show.
The group — Cindy Herron-Braggs, Terry Ellis and Rhona Bennett — will appear as themselves when Cookie (played by Henson) books them as a musical guest on her talk show “Tea Talk.” The show, titled “Come Undone” after an En Vogue song, is the third of 10 final episodes of the series, which premiered in 2015.
“We’ve been fans of ‘Empire’ from its inception,” Ellis tells Variety. “We love the infusion of performance and soundtracks — that’s been a great launching pad for upcoming artists. Being on set with Taraji brought back memories of how far we’ve come.” Herron-Braggs compared the power-broker Cookie to Epic Records Chairman & CEO Sylvia Rhone, one of the pioneering female executives in the music industry, who steered En Vogue to...
