There's striking while the iron is hot, and then there's striking while the iron is much closer to room temperature. "Escape Plan," director Mikael Håfström's 2013 action film pairing Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger together for a long-awaited team-up, is the latter. By the time the duo combined their powers to play a prison security expert (Stallone) who is wrongly incarcerated (I sincerely hope writers Miles Chapman and Arnell Jesko patted themselves on the back for coming up with such a brazenly obvious dramatic irony) and has to break out of an illicit maximum-security prison with the help of a fellow inmate (Schwarzenegger), their glory days anchoring '80s and '90s macho-fests were long behind them.
Contrary to that, the first "Escape Plan" is actually pretty fun! Or, rather, it's fun in the same way that Stallone and Schwarzenegger's best action movie throwbacks are, in that the pair spend...

There’s an overwhelming sense of deja vu in this competently made but immediately forgettable tale of a superhero forced out of retirement
In Ryan Coogler’s knockout 2015 reboot Creed, Og prizefighter Rocky Balboa was wisely kept outside of the ring for the first time, focusing on something even more terrifying than getting really beat up: getting really old. Sylvester Stallone, whose screen persona had fully devolved into parody by that point with a series of increasingly risible action films, found new depths in the most textured iteration of his most known character, a bruised fighter weathered by the many battles of life. It scored him a much-deserved Oscar nomination and hinted at a late-stage career bloom, one that was less about fists and more about feelings.
But such hope was short-lived, the actor returning to roles that required him to shoot first and emote later, and so remains an untapped potential,...

Gasoline Alley, (no relation to the classic comic strip), is the fifth collaboration between director Edward Drake and star Bruce Willis. Normally it’s a good thing when a director and performer can work together as a team. But when that teaming produces Breach, Cosmic Sin, Apex and American Siege one has to question why the studio keeps teaming them up.
Ex-con Jimmy Jayne is in a bit of trouble. He lost a lighter with the name of his tattoo parlour, Gasoline Alley, on it. Somebody did find it, but it was Detective Freeman (Bruce Willis) and his partner Detective Vargas. Or worse yet, a generic B-movie with digital tape damage, they’ve added a couple of twists to the formula while still keeping everything feeling authentic.

Most actors wouldn’t even entertain the idea of starring in an action movie at 74 years old, never mind making one in the attempt to launch a franchise, but you get the distinct feeling that Sylvester Stallone is going to keep churning them out for as long as he possibly can. Having appeared in sequels Rambo: Last Blood and Escape Plan: The Extractors last year, shooting has now finally resumed on his next effort, Samaritan.
The dark spin on the superhero genre was originally set for release this year, but the production was shut down less than three weeks after cameras had started rolling at the end of February due to the onset of the Coronavirus pandemic. Stallone has kept himself busy in the meantime by working on a Director’s Cut of Rocky IV while waiting for the all-clear, and now the cast and crew of Samaritan have finally returned to set.

Escape Plan, a prison action thriller that teamed Schwarzenegger up with Sylvester Stallone, is currently the ninth most popular movie on Netflix, according to the latest data from FlixPatrol’s global charts. That’s quite a feat considering the film wasn’t a massive hit when it was released back in 2013, especially when taking into account the recent efforts it has to compete with, such as Jamie Foxx’s Project Power.

The first Escape Plan finally had Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger teaming up on the big screen, and that novelty factor helped the pic earn nearly $140 million at the box office. Schwarzenegger declined to return for the sequel though and in his place, Dave Bautista was drafted in, with the series in need of another notable action star to replace him.
Unfortunately, though, Escape Plan 2 – and Escape Plan 3 (which also starred Bautista) – were both awful, which kind of makes you wonder why the Guardians of the Galaxy actor even signed on for the franchise in the first place. We’re sure that the paycheck certainly helped, but while speaking to Michael Rosenbaum on his Inside of You podcast, Bautista also admitted that it was because of the opportunity to work with Stallone that he took the gig.

Last week, I got to interview Devon Sawa about his role in the film Escape Plan: The Extractors. We delved into the role and his experiences, his upcoming films, and I got to gush a bit about my childhood crush on him. It was a great time. Check out the interview below:
Jessica Fisher: Hi, I’m Jessica Fisher from GeekTyrant, and I just have to say that twelve year old me is beside herself right now. I’m a big fan from way back., especially Now and Then.
Devon Sawa: Thank you so much. And you know what? That’s exactly how twelve year old me felt filming this movie with Sylvester Stallone. Not that I’m anything like Stallone. What I’m trying to say is thank you.
Jf: Of course! Do you still get a lot of women approach you who were young fans of yours.

Vinegar Syndrome is showing some love to the gritty vampire flick Night Owl this week, and Rlje Films is unleashing Deadsight on both formats as well.
For those of you who dig action flicks, Escape Plan: The Extractors hits both Blu and DVD on Tuesday, and be sure to check out We Have Always Lived in the Castle, which is an adaptation of Shirley Jackson’s haunting novel.
Other releases for July 12th include Robert Reborn, High Moon, Soul Reaper, and Nightmare Shark.

In a recent Instagram post, Sylvester Stallone has sensationally slammed last year’s Escape Plan 2: Hades as “truly the most horribly produced film I’ve ever had the misfortune of being in.” What makes this even more incredible is that Stallone used his bashing of the movie to promote the third installment of the franchise, which is set to be released on home video in a matter of days.
The first Escape Plan finally saw Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger team up on the big screen, and that novelty factor resulted in the pic earning almost $140 million at the box office. After Schwarzenegger declined to return for the sequel, the series went straight to home video with Curtis ’50 Cent’ Jackson the only other cast member to stick around.
Something must have gone seriously wrong during the production of Escape Plan 2 though for Stallone to slam the project so publicly...

"What's going down?" Lionsgate has debuted the first teaser trailer for action sequel Escape Plan: The Extractors, the third movie in the Escape Plan series. Same as the second movie, Escape Plan 3 is being released direct-to-vod/DVD continuing the action-heist-prison break movie series which first started with Escape Plan in 2013 (directed by Mikael Håfström; this one did actually open in theaters). I don't know how they keep convincing him to come back, but Sylvester Stallone stars again as Ray Breslin, the masterful prison escape artist / "security expert", who gets really upset when his girlfriend is kidnapped. The plot also involves a Hong Kong tech mogul's daughter being taken, and so Breslin gets his old team back to get them out and home safely. Also starring Dave Bautista, Jaime King, Harry Shum Jr., Devon Sawa, Daniel Bernhardt, Malese Jow, Curtis Jackson, and Russell Wong. I couldn't care any less about this series.

“This time, it’s personal.”
If you hear those words in a trailer for an action film sequel, you have to know what you are getting yourself into. It’s a cliche at this point, but making things “personal” is a quick way to effectively up the emotional stakes of an action film, and thus, the thought is the film will be better because of it. In the teaser for “Escape Plan: The Extractors,” things apparently get personal, but it’s clear that Sylvester Stallone and Dave Bautista aren’t going to be winning any Oscars for this film.

The Boies/Schiller Film Group filed suit on Tuesday, accusing Emmett Furla Oasis of breaching a deal to produce two “Escape Plan” sequels starring Sylvester Stallone.
Boies/Schiller was founded in 2012 by star litigator David Boies and Zack Schiller, the son of Jonathan Schiller — the co-founder of Boies’ law firm. The firm aimed to finance and produce “mid-level wide release films” of the sort that studios had largely turned away from. One of its early deals was to produce “Escape Plan,” the 2013 Emmett Furla Oasis action movie starring Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
According to the suit, Boies/Schiller put up a $6 million loan for the $65 million project. The arrangement also gave Boies/Schiller rights to finance and produce the sequels, “Escape Plan 2: Hades” and “Escape Plan: The Extractors.”
Boies/Schiller alleges that Emmett Furla Oasis breached that agreement, and did not allow Boies/Schiller to put up financing for the sequels.

Netflix is getting into the zombie apocalypse TV genre with Black Summer, a more serious offering from the makers of Z Nation.
Black Summer is coming to Netflix, offering a more dramatic and intense take on the zombie apocalypse genre; an idea seemingly contradictory to series production company The Asylum, which was responsible for Syfy’s schlocky serial take on the genre, Z Nation, which was recently canceled after five seasons. Yet, with the genre still spear-headed by AMC’s ratings-declining (but still potent) The Walking Dead, the onus on this new series will be to prove that zombies aren’t passé.
Indeed, Black Summer is the creation of Z Nation co-creator/executive producer Karl Schaefer and the Syfy show's co-executive producer, John Hyams, with both serving as showrunners and writers. The project was given a straight-to-series order for eight episodes back in July 2018.
