The first teaser trailer for “Scenes from a Marriage,” HBO’s limited series adaptation of the classic Ingmar Bergman drama, has arrived. Oscar Isaac and Academy Award nominee Jessica Chastain star in Hagai Levi’s update of the Swedish miniseries as a couple in serious crisis. Check out the first look below.
“Scenes from a Marriage” re-examines the blistering 1973 miniseries’ iconic depiction of love, hatred, desire, monogamy, and marriage through the lens of a modern-day American couple, played by Isaac and Chastain. The limited series project marks a reunion for Chastain and co-star Oscar Isaac, who led Jc Chandor’s 2014 film “A Most Violent Year.”
The series will transport the ’70s-set story of the Swedish original, which was condensed from its original six parts to a theater-friendly, three-hour movie in 1974, to America. Chastain and Isaac embody the roles originated by Liv Ullmann and Erland Josephson, respectively, who played an affluent...

The world has been inundated with “prestige” dramas, as streamers and networks snatch up A-list filmmakers and major stars to appear in a huge swatch of limited series that have been arriving over the past several years. However, there’s prestige and then there’s prestige. And though the term has been watered down over the years, there’s no denying the incredible prestige that is attached to HBO’s upcoming “Scenes from a Marriage” limited series.

By the time the first red carpet rolls out at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival, it will have been more than two years since the usual crowd of festival fans, cinephiles, journalists, filmmakers, stars, and assorted gawkers and hangers-on descended upon the small seaside city for one of the world’s most lauded festivals. The 2020 edition of the festival was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and while the festival still named a number of films as part of its Official Selection, 2021 marks a return to “normal” festival-going that feels both scary and worth celebrating.
A number of films bestowed with those asterisked 2020 laurels will finally make their bow at the 2021 festival, along with a slew of brand-new titles (including a few even made during the pandemic), some returning stars, and some major new names to know. Of the dozens of films set to premiere at Cannes, we’ve honed in...

In 1973, Jan Troell’s “The Emigrants” became the third non-English language film to contend for the Best Picture Oscar, and the first to also earn directing, writing, and acting nominations. Leading lady Liv Ullmann’s bid made her the first person recognized for a Swedish language performance. With this achievement, the Norwegian native brought further pride to the Nordic countries after having already established herself as a singularly talented artist. Half a century later, her reputation as one of the world’s most revered actresses has finally led to Oscar glory in the form of an honorary award.
Along with Danny Glover, Samuel L. Jackson, and Elaine May, Ullmann is set to be recognized at the upcoming 12th annual Governors Awards. Mia Hansen-Løve’s “Bergman Island” has been percolating for several years now, which is why many cinephiles were thrilled to hear the drama will have its world premiere at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival. “Bergman Island” will compete for the Palme d’Or, making Hansen-Løve one of only four women in competition at Cannes 2021. An international trailer for the film has been released, debuting the first footage of cast members Tim Roth, Vicky Krieps, Mia Wasikowska, and Anders Danielsen Lie.
“Bergman Island” centers around a filmmaking couple (Roth and “Phantom Thread” breakout Krieps) who travel to the island of Fårö, which is where Ingmar Bergman lived and died and shot scenes for iconic films such as “Through a Glass Darkly” (1961), “Persona” (1966), “The Passion of Anna” (1969), and “Scenes from a Marriage” (1972). It’s here where the couple’s relationship is tested as the line between reality and fiction starts to blur.

“Master of None” is known for deftly hopping between narratives. One episode may split its focus among an array of New Yorkers whose only bond was going to the same movie, and the next will dial in on a character trying to come out to her family over the course of several Thanksgiving dinners. Season 3 does shift its story while introducing a new central character, but unlike previous entries, it doesn’t move on. Subtitled “Moments in Love,” the truncated, five-episode Season 3 tells the story of Denise (Lena Waithe) and Alicia (Naomi Ackie) as their relationship progresses from domestic bliss to personal challenges and beyond. Fans will remember Denise from previous seasons, but a lot has changed since she last visited, and the same can be said for “Master of None.”
Anyone who missed out on the marketing campaign may be taken aback by the shift in focus. After all,...

Songwriting collaborations are so often portrayed as mystical unions that those of us who aren’t in the room where it happens have to wonder if there aren’t just as many instances where oil and water refuse to mesh. At last, the testiness that can result when writing sessions go south is portrayed on screen in “I’m Going to Break Your Heart,” a documentary about singer-songwriters Raine Maida (of the group Our Lady Peace) and Chantal Kreviazuk, who comprise the duo Moon Vs Sun.
The two escape from L.A. for a songwriting retreat on the French island of Saint Pierre, only to be constantly rubbing each other the wrong way in the collaborative process. That Maida and Kreviazuk are also husband and wife does lend some extra stakes when they battle it out as co-writers: This might be the first marital-drama documentary that has, at its crux,...

Few titles which will have been presented at this Friday’s MipDrama look as ingenious in their invention as “Agatha Christie’s Hjerson.”
Anyone looking for a series of novels in the Poirot or Marple vein will look in vain. Sven Hjerson appears in multiple Christie works, but always via (often disparaging) comments made by his creator, fictional crime novelist Ariadne Oliver, a friend of Poirot’s whom Christie invented to let off steam about the travails of crime writing.
Despite being her most popular detective, Oliver would like to kill him off, she says. That’s because she’s made him a foreigner and receives letters from readers complaining about the inaccuracy of her descriptions of him: a fate suffered by Christie with Poirot.
Many decades later, Oliver must be rolling in her grave. Her master sleuth Sven Hjerson has now become the protagonist of an eight-part TV series...

HBO really wants you to look forward to their content this year. To that end, the network recently dropped a Trailer for their impending 2021 shows. There’s a bunch of interesting ones, but chief among them is a miniseries remake of the Ingmar Bergman classic Scenes From a Marriage. Much like the Swedish original aired as several episodes on television, so too will this one. Here, Jessica Chastain and Oscar Isaac will be the couple at the center of the event series. Those two obviously have worked together before, notably in A Most Violent Year, so watching them duke it out again is going to be a real treat. Variety had this to say, when reporting on the miniseries last year, back when it was Michelle Williams opposite Isaac, as opposed to Chastain: Oscar Isaac and Michelle Williams are attached to star in an HBO limited series adaptation of Ingmar...

HBO has revealed first look footage at its highly anticipated “Scenes from a Marriage” remake, starring Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain. Originally written and directed by Ingmar Bergman, the 1973 miniseries starred Liv Ullmann and Erland Josephson as an affluent married couple whose marriage is charted across a decade, from disintegration to reconciliation and back again. The new limited series is co-created, written, and directed by Hagai Levi, who last examined a discordant marriage throughout five seasons on “The Affair,” which he co-created with Sarah Treem. The project marks a reunion for Chastain and Isaac, who led J.C. Chandor’s 2014 film “A Most Violent Year.”
Bergman’s Swedish original was condensed from its original six parts to a theater-friendly, three-hour movie in 1974 for its American release. Bergman based the saga on his own experiences, including his longtime relationship with muse and partner Ullmann, to whom he was married from 1965 to 1970.

Typically, people would be a bit upset if they found out that Hollywood had decided to remake Ingmar Bergman’s 1972 drama series/film, “Scenes from a Marriage.” But when you find out that HBO is the network behind the new series and it’s set to star Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain, it’s hard to be cynical about this one whatsoever. Frankly, we’re just dying to see it.

Oscar Isaac is in talks to join the Marvel screen universe as Moon Knight, according to Deadline. Isaac, who starred as Poe Dameron in the latest Star Wars trilogy for LucasFilm and Disney, will now stay with the Mouse House if he signs up to star in Marvel’s Moon Knight series, which has been announced for the Disney+ streaming service.
Moon Knight, a.k.a. Marc Spector, was created by writer Doug Moench and artist Don Perlin and made his Marvel Comics debut in the August 1975 issue of Werewolf by Night. The son of a rabbi, a former CIA agent and mercenary, Spector is betrayed by an employer and left for dead near an archaeological dig, where he is approached by the Egyptian moon god Khonshu. The supernatual being offers the dying Spector a second chance at life if he becomes Khonshu’s avatar on Earth, investing him with superhuman abilities.

Oscar Isaac is in talks to star in the Marvel series “Moon Knight” at Disney Plus, Variety has learned.
“Moon Knight” tells the story of Marc Spector, an elite soldier and mercenary who decides to fight crime after he becomes the human avatar of Khonshu, the Egyptian god of the moon.
The role would mark a return of sorts to Marvel for Isaac, who previously starred in “X-Men: Apocalypse,” though that film was released prior to Marvel reacquiring the film rights to the “X-Men” franchise. Isaac is also no stranger to working with Disney, as he starred in the recent “Star Wars” trilogy as Resistance fighter Poe Dameron.
Marvel had no comment.
Isaac is one of the most sought-after actors working today. In addition to his roles in “Star Wars” and “X-Men,” he is known for starring in the Coen brothers film “Inside Llewyn Davis,” which earned him a Golden...

With his time in the Star Wars franchise coming to an end, Oscar Isaac sets his sights on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Deadline is hearing he is in negotiations to star as the title character in Moon Knight, the Marvel and Disney+ series based on the comic book hero.
Jeremy Slater, who developed and wrote Netflix’s series adaptation of The Umbrella Academy comic books, has been tapped to develop and lead the writing team on the series for the streamer.
Moon Knight, aka Marc Spector, is a mercenary who has numerous alter egos — cabbie Jake Lockley and millionaire playboy Steven Grant — in order to better fight the criminal underworld. But later he was established as being a conduit for the Egyptian moon god Khonshu. Most recently, the character was a consultant who dresses in all-white and goes by the name Mr. Knight.

When the coronavirus pandemic arrived in Hollywood earlier this year, shutting down productions and throwing the industry into chaos, not even veteran TV executive Michael Ellenberg, the former HBO head of drama responsible for commissioning iconic series such as “Westworld,” “Big Little Lies,” “True Detective,” and “The Leftovers,” could have predicted such a robust, industry-wide call to arms.
“If you had told me today that Hollywood would have a vast series of testing protocols for all these productions and the White House wouldn’t? It speaks for itself,” Ellenberg said during a keynote address at Rome’s Mia market on Thursday.
But the founder and CEO of the production outfit Media Res, which this week resumed production on the Apple TV Plus series “The Morning Show,” noted that the film and television industry at its core is “a problem-solving business” uniquely equipped to handle a crisis.

Rome’s Mia market, the growing showcase for international TV series, feature films and documentaries, kicked off Wednesday in the Eternal City. The sixth edition of the event—whose acronym stands for the Mercato Internazionale Audiovisivo, or the International Audiovisual Market—runs both physically in the Italian capital and online Oct. 14-18. (Find the full schedule here).
This year’s edition has attracted 1,400 participants from 41 countries. Of the 600 international executives slated to take part, half will be present in Rome for the physical edition, according to the event’s organizers. At least 80% of the registered Italian participants will also attend in person.
“Mia has responded to an urgency not only in Italy but also internationally, that of maintaining international contacts during a period of isolation,” Mia director Lucia Milazzotto said at a press conference Wednesday, before appearing in conversation with Secretary of State Mirella Liuzzi to discuss new innovations in Italy’s audiovisual industry.

In the late 1970s, when Hollywood was in the middle of its most seismic transformation since the collapse of the studio system, there was a much-talked-about trend that seemed to fit all too snugly into the new world order. That was the arrival of hotshot British movie directors who had honed their craft in the rarefied world of English TV commercials.
At first there were two such transplants: Alan Parker and Ridley Scott. They were soon joined by Adrian Lyne (who made his first feature in 1980) and Scott’s younger brother, Tony Scott (who released his first major film in 1983). All four became players in the industry, and each developed his own style and brand and personality. Ridley Scott was the artiste of the group, crafting visionary sci-fi like “Alien” and “Blade Runner.” Adrian Lyne, director of “Foxes” and “Flashdance,” was the youth-culture maven, and Tony Scott, of “Top Gun” fame,...

Clemency (Chinonye Chukwu)
From Escape from Alcatraz to Cool Hand Luke to The Shawshank Redemption, cinema is rich with not only prison films focused on the plight of the prisoner, but also depicting wardens in an evil light. Clemency, winner of the Dramatic Grand Jury Prize at Sundance Film Festival, flips the script in both ways, both turning the spotlight on a warden and painting her in an empathetic, complicated light. Led by Alfre Woodard, she gives a riveting, emotional performance as the Bernadine Williams, a woman who is stuck between the demands of her grueling job and a disintegrating marriage, and can’t give her all to both.

The Quinn Colson novels by Ace Atkins are being developed as a TV series at HBO, Variety has learned exclusively.
In the books, Colson is a former Army Ranger who returns to his home in rural northeast Mississippi. But upon returning, he discovers that where he grew up has been overrun with corruption, drugs, and violence.
There are currently 10 novels in the Quinn Colson series, starting with “The Ranger.” Others include “The Lost Ones,” “The Broken Place,” “The Forsaken,” and “The Redeemers.”
In addition to writing the Quinn Colson novel series, Atkins also took over Robert B. Parker’s Spenser character following Parker’s death in 2010. He has written eight novels in the Spenser series since. That includes “Wonderland,” which was subsequently adapted into the Mark Wahlberg-Winston Duke film “Spenser Confidential.” Atkins is a former newspaper reporter and SEC football player who also writes essays and investigative pieces for various publications.

I confess that, when I first came up with the idea for this week's Almost There write-up, I didn't expect its subject to be so weirdly topical. First up, there's the actual raison d'être for the piece, which is the Criterion Channel's new "Marriage Stories" collection, in which Ingmar Bergman's Scenes from a Marriage is featured. Then there's the whole Hamilton kerfuffle, which caused controversy over the Academy's definition of what is and isn't cinema or what should and shouldn't be eligible for the Oscars (two importantly different questions). This is relevant because the ineligibility of Bergman's film caused a major ruckus back in 1974 and even prompted a couple of notorious open letters. Finally, we have the recent news that the television cut of Scenes from a Marriage is going to be remade by HBO with Michelle Williams and Oscar Isaac in the leading roles.
