Hitting the "Kimmy" Sweet Spot!
The first few episodes of Season 3 have been sharp, quick, funny absurdist gems, but with Episode 4, "Kimmy Goes to College," "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" hits the stride that makes the show brilliant.
The key to "Kimmy" is the way the optimism of the main character helps her progress towards her goals while enabling the very dark people around Kimmy to discover sunshine.
To wit: Titus gets a job paying $100/hr. as a back-up vocalist on some very politically incorrect songs. But with a push from some inadvertently positive advice, he gets to lay down the lead track on what will probably become a viral hit...

...and in doing so, may have given the composer a lift out of the despair that drives his paranoid anger.
Other highlights of S.3's fourth episode include Lillian assuming her position on the Upper, Upper, Upper Manhattan Zoning Commission with an epic filibuster and the return of the adorable slacker poseur, Xanthippe Vorhees, who reprises her role as Kimmy's nemesis and unwilling life-coaching client:
Kimmy: "I know right now it feels like the world is ending. But I know if you don't give up and you think positive, things will work out."
Xan: "I want to fight you."
Kimmy: "No, you DON'T. I would DESTROY you."
***
Also in "Kimmy Goes to College" we see again how Kimmy's experience as a Mole Woman pays off when "The Crank" opens a HUGE door on her future.
Season 3, Ep. 4 introduces a new recurring character, Artie Goodman (played by Peter Reigert of "Animal House" fame), a man who takes EVERYTHING in stride while staying very grounded. Goodman foreshadows as a major influence on Lillian and Kimmy:
Artie: "It says 'Caffeine-free!'"
Kimmy: "That's because you don't pay extra for the caffeine."
***
Among the many great lines of dialogue in "Kimmy Goes to College":
Titus:
"Don't you know taking a picture of a gay man, unannounced, is a hate crime?"
--and--
"Is that my phone? Get your thumbs off it! I don't know where you bowl."
Kimmy:
"Xan's so rich she once used a helicopter to dry out some pants she peed in."
--and this gem:
(Reading aloud to Xanthippe the review of Kimmy's "Task Rabbit" performance Xan has posted):
"'Kimmy looks like a traffic cone on a snowman, but there's less reason for her to exist. She was hired to put together a rowing machine. Instead, she took apart my will to live.'
"Then the soft-serve chocolate ice cream emojis...
(Kimmy glares at Xanthippe) " ...Thanks for THAT."
***
As usual, there are visual Easter eggs throughout the episode. Look carefully at the Great Seal of the Upper, Upper, Upper Manhattan Zoning Commission. And see if you can identify what Lillian uses as a blanket when she passes out from exhaustion at the conclusion of her filibuster. There is also a long shot of the Seal of Columbia University whose Latin motto has been modified. Best as I can understand from a Google Translate decoding it says something like: "Of all the great shows you could have chosen, you picked this one."
"Kimmy Goes to College" joins the group of episodes at the top of my list of "Kimmy" favorites. The episode skillfully lampoons some of today's best known and worst elements of social behavior, hearkens often to the theme of the show: "The females ARE STRONG AS HELL," and compels multiple replays of great moments while being breathtakingly funny.
Join me in singing along with Titus Andromedon...
