To Catch a Tiger
ThomasDrufke18 October 2017
We're getting a double dose of P.T. Barnum goodness this year with Hugh Jackman playing him in a biopic/music later this year and last night we got the one and only Billy Zane to guest star as the great entertainer of the late 19th century. This, along with a few other things, gave this episode a jolt of energy, something that I needed after last week.

There's still nothing groundbreaking about this season so far, and I highly doubt there will be anytime soon, but I think these fun one off episodes are always worth watching. With the focus being on P.T.'s circus, it only made sense for him to try and exploit the Legends and show off their powers to the crowd. In that way, this famous figure may be the most logical guest appearance out of any of the countless ones we've had to date. Can you tell I really enjoyed Billy Zane? It's not like he was just a famous actor playing a role, I felt like this was a character who actually went through an arc in the episode, and Zane pulled it off brilliantly.

As where last week felt like a complete retcon yet also rehash of what came last season, this episode felt like classic Legends. Why I liked this episode so much more if i'ts honestly all the same thing? Well, that's a difficult question. But I don't think it's any coincidence that Rip did not make an appearance last night. Of course, I know that won't stick. But hey, Ava Sharpe made more of an impression than Rip ever did.

This episode's big arc mainly dealt with Nate & Amaya's up and down relationship. I'm glad they explained her absence a little bit by showing her see what her granddaughter was doing in present day Detroit. It's not a relationship that I absolutely need on the show, but if they keep it interesting I'm okay with it. I guess the bigger concern is who the big bad of this season will be and if this show can finally land in that territory. Obviously it's been a struggle so far, so I'm hoping that last night's end tag will tease something bigger and better this year.

Hodge podge shouldn't work, but it does for LoT

Warning: Spoilers
This ep was kind of all over the place, but in a fun way. We get Jax and Ray shanghaied by the circus and forced to be faux Siamese twins, Mick is afraid of clowns, round 2 of Sara v Agent Sharpe with water break, Mick accidentally released the really cute miniaturized anachronism, Martin and Mick to the rescue of the rest of the team, and Amaya returns with a problem which amazingly she 'fessed up to the team instead of keeping it a secret! It's irreverence for any kind of rule-following, both plot and structure wise, continues to make Lot work, and more importantly, fun to watch.

Score: 8

A very good episode!

Warning: Spoilers
The second episode of season 3 brought both funny and emotional moments. I had to slightly frown upon the Titanic reference in it, though it was in my opinion intended to be funny, I think Victor Garber must be sort of annoyed of references to his hands down most famous movie role! I reckon ,that the freak show idea wasn't that bad! I have to say that Billy Zane is an excellent actor, whatever you may think of him! I was so happy that Amaya returned, though I wonder how she is going to fare in the coming episodes. Her opening up to the team about her recent problems was one of the highlights of the show. In the end the mood seemed to have gotten lighter, but to my liking too fast! I'd have the Legends meditating Amaya's confession in more depth, were I the creators! On the other hand, I was happy to actually see Victor (Garber) smile ( which he rarely does!). And I love Franz Drameh as Jax more and more every single episode! He and Dominic Purcell, and also Victor Garber are the MVP's of the show, and the latter will be in my opinion missed in it, when he leaves cause of Broadway duties!

Best actors in the episode: Maisie Richardson-Sellers as Amaya/Vixen,Franz Drameh as Jax Jackson, Dominic Purcell as Mick Rory, Victor Garber as Martin Stein

Welcome to the Circus!

Warning: Spoilers
Backing up my claim from last week, once again this episode was a whole lot of fun. For me, out of all the shows, Legends has the most genuine and unforced feel of fun behind each of their episodes. I don't think Legends would work if they tried to capture the dark feel of say Arrow and Flash S3. But lucky for us the writers feel comfortable sticking with that fun and light-hearted feel. Which is great!

Now on to the episode. We get our explanation for why Amaya left Nate (and the group), which was to save her Granddaughter's life as if Amaya had stayed in 2017 her granddaughter would be erased. This felt like a legitimate reason as everyone would do anything for their family.

But I feel as though Amaya's return was a bit rushed. As soon as they come across an anachronism that has something to do with animals, she comes back. I think her return would've had a stronger feel behind it had she been gone for a few more episodes.

Now onto the "villain" and the plot. Although I really like that they had a circus themed episode, there wasn't really a villain this week? The one and only P.T Barnum was the villain this week. That's right, a person with no powers what so ever pushed the Legends to their peak. He was able to lock up over half of the team, and that just felt really cheap. If the Legends can't easily dismantle a "villain" like this, then what hope do they have against the other villains they will face this season?

Despite this problem the fun and whimsical nature of the episode keeps it enjoyable. The man of steel pun when Nate steeled up, and Mick's fear of clowns are two great examples.

Finally, Amaya explains how she's been losing control of her powers in recent times. Will this have a connection to the main villain?

Overall enjoyable episode, even with a sub par villain. 7.8/10

A Step in the Right Direction...

Warning: Spoilers
There are many shows where the main story is the most important and interesting thing to follow, but there are also those shows where you just enjoy the good fun small adventures. One of those shows is "Legends of Tomorrow" because I've always felt that the writers did a much better job focusing on the standalone episodes, than the one that support the overarching storylines. I mean, there are times where its the opposite, but for the most part, I think that these are the episodes that are the most enjoyable. They have the chance to just be fun and goofy and not really worry about the bigger picture. This is one of those episodes, and it is one of the more enjoyable ones in the show. It felt a lot fresher than the premiere, even though the episode still suffered from the big negative that is an uninteresting adversary.

This was an enjoyable episode. It was one of the more fun episodes that captured the spirit of what this show originally was. Not too serious, yet still able to move the plot in the right direction. And what better way to do that, than going to the circus. It didn't even cross my mind that they hadn't done an episode featuring P.T. Barnum yet, because it was such a great fit that I thought they had done it, but when I thought back, I couldn't seem to remember him ever appearing, so this was definitely a delight, and one that was a little bit too overdue, yet it helped to punch some life into this season, that had a premiere that just didn't work.

Once again, the dynamic between the characters is a big plus. They have great chemistry and the scenes where they are together having a drink, or just playing cards work so well because of that. There are also references in this particular episode that would not have worked, if the actors wasn't on top to give response to each other. I love to see them all own the screen together, and especially when they are teamed up in pairs, because that's where they have most room to play off each other. It can be hard to do that when you are surrounded, but with two people, you should be just fine.

I also really loved the inclusion of P.T. Barnum. He was known to be a man who loved freaks, because they would make money for him. So this just felt like such a great fit, and I ended up understanding Barnum's motivations for what he did. He could be seen as the antagonist of this episode and with good reason, but I think that Billy Zane (reunited with his "Titanic co-star Victor Garber) gave a terrific performance as he really managed to embody everything that Barnum was known to be, especially when he realize what these superheroes can do, which changes his world completely.

But amidst all the joy, there is still one big glaring weakness to this season, and it is called the Time Bureau. Once again they come in and ruin an episode, this time one that actually had things going for it. I hate the inclusion of this stupid agent named Gary, whose only real talent is to be captured and being good at nothing. And then we have Sharpe. Her motivation for hating the Legends is totally misplaced, given that they have managed to safe time twice already. Her entire reason for hating them is so flawed, and I don't get why the writers can't come up with something cool for her. I have a feeling that I know where her story is going, and I actually wouldn't mind it going the way I think, but because of the predictability of it, I don't think it will be the case. Or maybe it will, since it is The CW.

There is also something with Amaya in this episode, that I thought was a little forced. Granted, I don't know what role this will play in the bigger picture, but for this specific episode, it seemed like it was introduced to give her and Nate a reason and an easy way to reconcile. If they had waited with that reveal to a later episode, I think they could have gotten a bigger gain out of it. However, I have a feeling that the reveal is going to play a part in the season, but we will have to see.

I still hate Nate
forgotten707-114 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Here comes season 3, and instead of making Nate better, the writers have doubled down on the dumb. His lines are horrible, he's nothing but a detriment to the team, and the actor can't even act drunk.

Please, Someone melt him down to make Sara another staff or something.

Good but...

This is a good distraction but it seems to over play the guys are dumb woman are all powerful card way to much. Especially Sara Lance, I mean how over the top can you get? If that was toned down I would enjoy it a lot more.

catching a tiger , wow what a mission
ldevalmont20 October 2017
I follow LOT, since the beginning I'm not a big fan but I enjoy the series. And then season 3 came with the worst episode ever, I laughed a lot but not for their joke but because they were the joke. I don't know who wrote the scenario but it sucks! They are super hero's God damn! And the can't catch a tiger, (spoil) I was laughing hard when they had the technology to minimize things and they fail to do it on the tiger all because the hero sneezed .. seriously This it could work for teenagers, I guess 25+ people are not the audience objectives anymore. All the romance stuff are outdated.

I don't get why the episode get this high score, it's like enjoy watching a oven do his job and motive the write to continue easy scenarios.

Don't be mad, it's my own opinion.

Entertaining, but also a mess
Anonnamus11 January 2020
I love time travel and am obsessed with watching it, so this should be my favorite Arrowverse show. Instead, I'm frustrated each and every episode lately at the Legends. It seems the writers have decided to make them all idiots with single-digit IQs and incapable of making any intelligent decision, especially Nate. Ray Palmer was an absolute delight in Arrow, a brilliant scientist who was making a difference in the world. Becoming a Legend has turned him into a caricature of his former self, a blithering idiot only focused on how he can be a "hero" without any real plan or common sense. Jax had the best line of the entire series so far... "you mean you don't want us to come and mess things up"? This show has so much potential, there is no reason I should be actively rooting for the Time Bureau to fix things the Legends always screw up.

Amaya seems to be the voice of reason so I was happy to see her again. Even Stein had his uncharacteristic judgment lapses throughout the previous season. That reference to Titanic was gold, though. I will continue watching this because of time-travel, but please please please stop dumbing them all down. Except for Rory, that's to be expected and he plays the role brilliantly. Nate is useless and for a character who started out with such promise, he has become the weakest link in an already weak team.
