If you’re a fan of Mel Gibson’s classic action flicks, be sure to stream them before they leave Max at the end of August.
All four “Lethal Weapon” movies and “Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome,” starring the late, great Tina Turner, will be leaving the streaming service. Luckily, you’ll have all month to watch them.
Watching the new “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” animated movie in theaters? Max has several films featuring the radical reptilians: the live-action “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze” (1991)
and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III” (1993), as well as the animated “Tmnt” (2007).
Kaiju fans will want to check out “Godzilla” (2014), “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” (2019), “King Kong” (1933) and “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island” (2012).
Finally, if horror is your thing, six “Hellraiser” films and “The Ring Two” make great summer scares.
Here’s everything leaving Max in August 2023

February ushers in a new slate of movies and TV shows making their way to HBO and HBO Max, from a slew of James Bond movies to the recently released Olivia Colman-led “Empire of Light” to, yes, the Puppy Bowl.
“The Terminator,” “Catch Me If You Can,” “Footloose,” “Taxi Driver” and “The Silence of the Lambs” all mark notable library offerings this month, in addition to “Superbad,” “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)” and “Eighth Grade.”
Despite HBO Max pulling a number of originals from its roster over the past several months, HBO Max originals premiering on the platform this month include a Dionne Warwick documentary, an adult European animated series titled “Poor Devil” and “Harley Quinn: A Very Problematic Valentine’s Day Special” based on the popular animated series.

Valentine’s Day is fast approaching and HBO Max got the memo. With its list of new releases for February 2023, the HBO streamer is bringing a very special Valentine’s Day episode into the fold.
Harley Quinn: A Very Problematic Valentine’s Day Special premieres on Feb. 9 and finds Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy celebrating their first Valentine’s Day together. Consider this a fun little aperitif for the fast approaching Harley Quinn season 3 – which will feature none other than freshly-installed DC czar James Gunn. Other HBO Max original series this month include another C.B. Strike special on Feb. 6 and Spanish-language animated comedy Poor Devil a.k.a. Pobre Diablo on Feb. 17.
February also looks to be a jam-packed month for movies on HBO Max. February 1 sees the arrival of many appealing library titles like Birdman, Casino Royale, The Silence of the Lambs, and The Terminator. Later on HBO Max...

This Young Justice: Phantoms review contains spoilers.
Young Justice: Phantoms Season 4 Episode 24
It’s not possible for the Young Justice: Phantoms team to be reading what’s published on this little ol’ site and responding to it in almost real time. The lead time on animation is usually massive: what we see on HBO Max was probably written a year or more ago. That said, it certainly feels like the writers were thinking the same thing I was after last week: holy cats there’s a lot left to do.
And this week they started crossing stuff off their list.
General Zod
By my count, we’ve got three episodes left, and three villains that the story is orbiting around. The first is General Zod, who along with a Phantom Zone-brainwashed Conner Kent, spends much of the episode kicking the asses of the original team minus M’gann.

Freddie Stroma plays the very dangerous "yes man" in Peacemaker's life, Adrian Chase, Aka Vigilante. In Vigilante's story, in which he casts himself as a hero, he also casts himself as Peacemaker's Bff. He's less of a sidekick, and more of Chris' partner in crime -- and life. He's also unhinged and, all jokes aside, terrifying. Yet, against all odds during the season 1 finale, creator James Gunn and Stroma make audiences want to see this sociopath survive in the end.
Maybe a part of the reason why comes down to the chemistry Stroma shares with John Cena, which Stroma says happened on day one. "I'm...

Frank Pesce, a colorful character actor whose dozens of credits range from Beverly Hills Cop, Top Gun and Midnight Run to Miami Vice, Matlock and Kojak, has died. He was 75.
His girlfriend Tammy Scher told Deadline that Pesce died February 6 in Burbank of dementia complications.
Born on December 8, 1946, in New York City, Pesce put the “character” in character actor. A longtime close friend of Sylvester Stallone, Tony Danza, the late Robert Forster and many other industry players, he was known for his big smile, big stories and bigger personality.
“They make movies about guys like me,” he always said. That quote — more about it below — will be written on his epitaph, Scher said.

Peacemaker Episode 7
There’s catharsis and then there’s “shooting one’s white supremacist supervillain father in the head with a Nazi-era luger pistol” catharthis. “Stop Dragon My Heart Around”, the penultimate episode of Peacemaker season 1 opts for the latter and is all the better for it.
“Stop Dragon My Heart Around” is a little strange as far as penultimate episodes go. Part of it is spent wrapping up Chris Smith’s struggles with his father in spectacular fashion while the other part deals with setting up the climactic battle against the Butterflies in the finale to come. As such, the episode is a bit tonally confused and relegates what should be a series highlight to a miniboss battle on the way to the big one. Still, that miniboss battle is so thrilling and so rich that this ultimately feels like 40 minutes (the show’s...

The release of "Peacemaker" is fast approaching, bringing back John Cena, self proclaimed superhero, and the many disasters he's sure to cause. But the egotistical patriot won't be the only vigilante onscreen, with the series also introducing yet another antihero in Vigilante. Fans of both DC Comics and the Arrowverse will no doubt recognize the name behind the alias, Adrian Chase, and even those new to the character can probably guess his deal given the self-explanatory nickname. But there's a lot more to the character than you may realize, and it points to quite a few exciting possibilities for James...

Not content with currently hitting it out of the park over at Image with Geiger, Johns pitches up with a timely reminder that although Image are his new friends, DC are his long term best buds. He obviously made his career there, and a big part of the start of that career was a rather good book called Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E that introduced a young girl called Courtney Whitmore. This character is probably dearest to John’s heart than any other, as he modelled her on his real life sister Courtney, who tragically died in a plane crash. With that book and his use of her in Jsa (another great book) Johns established Courtney/ Stargirl as a strong enough character that she ended up with her own TV show. I’ve loved the...

Naomi Watts and director Phillip Noyce are joining forces for the thriller “Lakewood,” set to begin filming Sept. 16 in Ontario under strict Covid-19 protocols.
The film, written by Chris Sparling and produced by Boies/Schiller’s Zack Schiller and David Boies, Limelight’s Dylan Sellers and Chris Parker, Untapped’s Andrew Corkin, star Watts for Jam Tart Films and Stratagem’s Alex Lalonde, has echoes from today’s headlines. After over a year of speculation, Idris Elba’s character in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad (don’t call it Suicide Squad 2!) was revealed. Initially believed to be a replacement for Will Smith’s Deadshot (he wasn’t), and with tons of speculation that his character was everyone from Bronze Tiger to the Adrian Chase version of Vigilante, it was finally revealed at DC Fandome that Elba is playing Bloodsport.
The character of Bloodsport is, in proper Suicide Squad fashion, a very minor one in DC Comics history. He first appeared in Superman #4 in 1987, where he was created by John Byrne. This version of Bloodsport was Robert DuBois, a draft dodger who escaped serving in the Vietnam War, allowing his brother Michael to go and fight in his place. The guilt, after Michael was left severely injured in combat, was too much for Robert, and he lost his mind.

Idris Elba’s role in The Suicide Squad has been the subject of a lot of speculation from fans. Initially, it was reported that the British star would be replacing Will Smith as Deadshot in the Task Force X sequel, but then it was confirmed that he was actually playing an anti-hero we haven’t seen before in the Dceu. The main contender for who that could be quickly became Ben Turner Aka Bronze Tiger, a long-term member of the Squad in the comics.
Now, Elba has seemingly given us a big hint that he is indeed playing Bronze Tiger in the movie. Writer/director James Gunn celebrates his birthday today, and the film’s official Twitter account shared a video of The Suicide Squad‘s cast wishing the director a happy day. Some of the actor’s well wishes included a flavor of their characters, including Margot Robbie impersonating...

That’s a title with a ton of exploitation promise, don’t you think? Now imagine being a ten year old movie freak that ingested anything remotely salacious or possibly brain-damaging into his system to increase his cinematic database. A match made in heaven? Probably not in the eyes of those who would shelter such fragile minds from the grotesque and lurid underbelly of commercial film, but a definite boon to the kid looking specifically for the grotesque and lurid. Well folks, the buck pretty much not only stops at The Exterminator (1980), it finds itself aflame as celluloid floats to the ground in messy tribute. The ash of this one spread everywhere.
And I know, it’s not horror; but to a ten year old, exploitation and horror is completely simpatico - violence, nudity, and degradation were not only on the menu, they were pretty much alone on the laminated list.

The Dceu isn’t too worried about interconnectivity anymore, with most of its movies existing in their bubbles at this point, but there is a common thread running through Birds of Prey and the upcoming The Suicide Squad. And that’s Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn. Slightly unexpectedly, her recent all-girl team-up movie didn’t sow the seeds for the Task Force X sequel, so fans have wondered if it actually takes place prior to BoP in the timeline.
Writer/director James Gunn has all but spelled it out for us, though. In one of his regular Q&As with fans on Instagram, the filmmaker was asked last night whether his movie takes place after Birds of Prey. Gunn didn’t dive into the ins and outs of it, but he did say: “Tss takes place in the year it comes out.” In other words, yes. By the sounds of it,...

As shooting continues in Panama, more and more set photos are arriving from The Suicide Squad. This month, we’ve gotten our first glimpse at Margot Robbie’s latest look as Harley Quinn, and in these new pics – seen below, the Clown Princess of Crime is back. And this time she’s standing side by side with her new allies, revealing our best look yet at David Dastmalchian’s Polka-Dot Man, Daniela Melchior’s Ratcatcher and Idris Elba’s Vigilante.
As you can see, Robbie is once again wearing her red flamenco dancer outfit, with the red and black pigtails that she’ll sport in this film. Dastmalchian, meanwhile, is living up to his character’s name with his spotted suit and Melchior is looking suitably scruffy as the sewer-dwelling supervillain. As for Elba’s role, it’s yet to be officially confirmed, but it’s thought that he’s playing Vigilante.

Margot Robbie has finally been spotted shooting The Suicide Squad this week, revealing Harley Quinn’s revamped look for what will be her third Dceu appearance. In contrast to the pink and blue pigtails she’s had in the past two movies – Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey – pics from filming in Panama have unveiled Harley’s new red and black ‘do, a look that’s pulled straight from the comics.
This new image – seen below – gives us a clearer glimpse at Harley’s appearance in the film. As you can see, the photo captures Robbie in between filming as she follows writer/director James Gunn through the set. Given her red dress, fans are theorizing that Harley might masquerade as a flamenco dancer for a portion of the movie. Maybe it’s in order to steal a spear? While Birds of Prey screens in theaters, Margot Robbie is busy working on her next outing as Harley Quinn. James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, part-reboot/part-sequel to David Ayer’s 2016 movie, is currently shooting in Panama but up until now, we hadn’t got a glimpse of Harley. This new set video changes that though as it reveals that the Clown Princess will get a brand new look for the film.
The video gives us a peek at a snippet of a bizarre-looking scene, in which Harley runs out of a building with a spear in her hand and flees the location in a taxi. The anti-heroine is wearing a red dress and boots and, most noticeably, she’s got a new hairdo. In place of her pink and blue pigtails that she’s had for her last two appearances, Harley is here depicted with red and black hair.

With Directorial Debut ‘Booksmart’, Olivia Wilde Addresses Underestimated Demographic Of Young Women
After playing determined free spirits who refuse to be boxed in, like Quorra in Tron: Legacy, Devon Finestra in HBO’s Vinyl, and ambitious Atlanta Journal-Constitution reporter Kathy Scruggs in this season’s Richard Jewell, Olivia Wilde expanded her resume, which already included producing Meadowland and A Vigilante, to make her feature directorial debut with revisionist teen comedy Booksmart. The pic follows two brainy high schoolers played by Beanie Feldstein and Kaitlyn Dever, who realize they have only 24 hours before graduation to finally let loose. What ensues is a comedic caper packed with poignant musings on friendship and identity.
While the pic, like many smaller films this past summer, was bulldozed by Avengers: Endgame and Aladdin, it spoke to its core audience, and Wilde impressed studio executives around town to the point where they were clamoring and bidding on her follow-up directing projects with Booksmart writing collaborator Katie Silberman:...

Exclusive: Actor Theo James and producer Andrew D. Corkin are joining forces to produce theatrical and small-screen projects in the UK and U.S. with their new label Untapped.
“While our primary focus is genre and thriller, we are drawn to stories of conflicted humanity that force viewers to question how they would react when faced with real or existential threats,” said James. “These stories are often grounded in truth – literal or allegorical – encouraging us to confront and challenge the assumptions we make about ourselves and the world around us.”
Said Corkin: “We’re excited to solidify our partnership to tell complex, diverse stories across various mediums. Theo and I share a vision for how we want to build stories and worlds that both fit within the current marketplace and look beyond it.”
Already, James and Corkin have several film and TV projects in various stages of development, prep and post.

Jon Hamm and Olivia Wilde are set to star in Clint Eastwood’s “Richard Jewell,” an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
“Richard Jewell,” previously titled “The Ballad of Richard Jewell,” is based on the story of a security guard who was falsely accused in the bombing that took place at Atlanta’s Centennial Park during the 1996 Summer Olympics.
Billy Ray wrote the screenplay based on the 1997 Vanity Fair article from Marie Brenner that describes how Jewell, originally hailed by the media as a hero for alerting police to the presence of a bomb and helping evacuate the area, was identified as a prime suspect in the Olympic Park bombing, completely upending his life in the process.

How do you begin describing the movie you have been unknowingly waiting for your entire life? Do I start by telling you how incredibly hilarious “Booksmart” is? Or do I tell you how first-time feature film director Olivia Wilde created a resoundingly smart, inclusive, modern and revolutionary film for today’s teens?
How about this: “Booksmart” is, by far, one of the most perfect coming-of-age comedies I have ever seen.
Ride-or-die best friends and academic overachievers Amy (Kaitlyn Dever) and Molly (Beanie Feldstein) are a day shy of their high school graduation. Molly belatedly discovers that while she and Amy solely focused on homework, studying, and getting a fake ID solely for the purposes of using an all-night college library throughout high school, her partying peers are somehow also heading to Ivy League schools. Determined to have one last blast of hedonism before high school ends, she convinces Amy to...

Fact-based drama Richard Jewell is Clint Eastwood’s next news-story-inspired directorial effort.
Clint Eastwood may be pushing 90 years old (he turned 89 on May 31), but he’s still got plenty of creative fuel in his proverbial tank; a notion supported by his next directorial effort, Richard Jewell (formerly The Ballad of Richard Jewell), which will focus on the security guard wrongfully accused of attempting to bomb a town square near the 1996 Olympic Games.
Indeed, the onscreen legend and Oscar-winning director, Eastwood, occupied the director’s chair for the Disney/Fox fact-based drama. The film, based on an article of the same name from Vanity Fair, had Eastwood working off a script by Billy Ray, who worked on action-horror film Overlord, Tom Hanks-headlined Captain Phillips, film franchise launcher The Hunger Games and served as writer and credited creator of (now-canceled) Amazon series The Last Tycoon.
