If you haven’t taken the leap to bundle Disney+ and Hulu, it might be time. Streaming is only getting more expensive and competitive, and the enticing bundle (which also includes ESPN) might be a version of cable TV, but it’s also just cost efficient. Disney+ and Hulu are so intertwined that their monthly listing updates come in the same email — and as such, we decided to compile them here for you in the same list.
Whether you have Disney+ or Hulu, or both (and the IndieWire staff has weighed on our favorites), each has its benefits. Disney has the family-friendly titles, the Star Wars and Marvel (new episodes of “The Bad Batch” and “X-Men: 97” continue through April), while Hulu is the place to catch FX originals and network episodes. Both streamers have the rights to distribute National Geographic titles, which are well worth exploring along with the rest of the library.

Twenty years ago, Jeff Nichols found a book of photographs on his brother’s coffee table about an outlaw motorcycle club that rumbled around the American Midwest during the 1960s, and he immediately recognized it as the coolest fucking thing that he’d ever seen in his entire life — both the book itself, and the people in it.
To watch the greasy-as-hell movie Nichols has now adapted from Danny Lyon’s “The Bikeriders” is to know how he felt in that moment. And to watch that movie stall out after 45 of the most exhilarating and self-possessed minutes that Nichols has ever cut together is to know how he’s struggled to find a story worthy of the dirt-stained denim he’s been dreaming about ever since. As the leader of the Vandals laments about the crew that’s starting to slip away under his feet: “You can give everything you...

The company filed for creditor protection in Vancouver, B.C., and Chapter 15 in the U.S.
Gilbert wrote that Bron will be working with its creditors and stakeholders alongside court-appointed monitor Grant Thornton Limited and that proceedings “are expected to be completed by late

He thanked the Bron team, as well as the company’s “incredible creative, production, and business partners,” as corporate backers and reps and service providers for “all the support and patience through a very tough few years.”

De Niro is reportedly playing both roles. Narducci will play Anna Genovese who is the wife of De Niro’s Vito character. Deadline first told you that Debra Messing is in talks to play Bobbie, the wife of De Niro’s Costello character.

In an era of Hollywood less interested in movie star power, the most interesting performers these days tend to be character actors. Enter Tom Hardy, an English actor with a face chiseled and handsome enough to pass as the leading man, but looks are not very high on his list of priorities. From his delightfully incoherent take on Bane in "The Dark Knight Rises" to his twitchy, silent Max Rockatansky in "Mad Max: Fury Road" and even his leading role in the "Venom" comic book films, his chaotic, kinetic energy is his number one quality.
Recently, one can find Hardy on "Peaky Blinders" as a Jewish gang leader, or in Josh Trank's 2020 film "Capone," in which he portrayed an aging and withered Al Capone, one of the most famous criminals in American history. Both are gangster characters in a long career of playing mobsters, hitmen, and hardened criminals. While...

Just moments ago, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed the total number of movies that are eligible to win their Best Picture prize. This time around, there are 366 films that are in contention to take the Oscar for Best Picture. That would be the largest number for the Academy in a half century, which is an interesting quirk, considering the expanded Academy Awards eligibility this year. The list is below, but it contains all of the expected flicks, as you might imagine. Now, we just have to wait a few more weeks and see which titles are nominated for Best Picture. Then, we can whittle this list down from 366 to something less than ten. Sit tight for that… Here are all 366 films eligible for this year’s Best Picture Oscar: Absent Now the Dead Accidental Luxuriance of the Translucent Watery Rebus Alberto and the Concrete Jungle All...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Thursday revealed the 366 feature films that are eligible for consideration at the 93rd Oscars, which are set to air April 25 live on ABC.
The total number of films is up from last year’s 344 films in contention.
This year’s list was compiled based on tweaked eligibility rules implemented because of the coronavirus pandemic, which has pushed the ceremony to its latest date ever. For this year, feature films had to open by February 28 in a commercial motion picture theater for a seven-day qualifying run in at least one of six metro areas: Los Angeles County, New York City, the Bay Area, Chicago, Miami and Atlanta. Drive-in theaters open nightly were included as qualifying venues, as were films intended for theatrical release but because of the lockdown made available first via streaming, VOD service or other broadcast.

Exclusive: In the wake of receiving two Golden Globe nominations for its Sia-directed movie Music, Vertical Entertainment can boast that its Nate Parker feature American Skin has become one of the distributor’s highest grossing titles on PVOD with $4M over two weeks. American Skin debuted on Jan. 15 in select cinemas and on on-demand platforms such as Apple, Amazon, Vudu, and Google Play. American Skin‘s two-week figure bests the $2.5M+ that it accumulated over ten days for last summer’s Capone, a previous Vertical Entertainment high point.
I’m told that American Skin‘s PVOD success is largely due to a strategized social media initiative which received great support from the Black community who embraced the film with tastemakers such as Lebron James, Diddy, E40, David Oyelowo, and more.

Carver’s first feature was Pam Grier’s The Arena (1974), a gladiator movie set in ancient Rome that marked his initial collaboration with producer Roger Corman, and he also guided Ben Gazzara in Capone (1975), Warren Oates and Ken Norton in Drum (1976) and Lee Majors in Steel (1979).

"Give me a moment, would you, friend? I've never been on trial for my thoughts before." As crazy as 2020 has been, the truth is - we still had plenty of great movies to enjoy. Friend of the site Dino Kos (also known as @WolvieCBM) has spent the last few months editing his year-in-review video. His presentation is called Cinema 2020 - A Year in Film and it's available to watch now. There's clips from a bunch of films in this that I don't know if people might've even forgotten about from this year: Wendy, Love & Monsters, Over the Moon, Capone, Vivarium, Tesla. Plus all our other favorites: The Trial of the Chicago 7, First Cow, Soul, Mank, Wonder Woman 1984, Palm Springs, Da 5 Bloods, Bill & Ted Face the Music, Tenet, Possessor, Minari, Sound of Metal, The Invisible Man, Birds of Prey, and I'm Thinking of Ending Things. As always, these...

The weekend is here, meaning that another batch of movies are arriving on VOD and the various streaming services to keep viewers occupied as the theatrical industry remains virtually locked down, and in keeping with the theme of the last few months, the list features a star-studded Netflix original, several titles that have been pulled from cinemas and sent straight to streaming instead, the standard batch of low-budget genre entries and additions to the content library of a freshly-launched platform.
There’s certainly no shortage of options for those who find themselves struggling to flip on something they’ve never seen before, which is a very real problem these days with viewership numbers for all streaming services surging across the board, as the effects of the Coronavirus pandemic continue to wreak havoc on everyday life but play right into the hands of the money men in the boardrooms at Netflix,...

“The Tax Collector” and “The Secret Garden” both showed strong VOD debuts Friday while taking different routes to success. Set among rival Los Angeles gangs, David Ayers’ “The Tax Collector” stars Shia Labeouf and placed #1 at Apple TV and FandangoNow, and #5 at Amazon (Spectrum’s charting period ended before it was available.) “The Secret Garden,” the fourth adaptation of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s classic story of an orphan girl who finds escape in a magical garden, took the top spot at Amazon and fourth at FandangoNow.
With a non-premium price of $6.99, “The Tax Collector,” distributor Rlje self-reports that it has first weekend rentals over $2 million and played at 129 theaters (mainly drive-ins), where it grossed $309,964. That’s first place among new releases; according to incomplete grosses on Comscore, “The Empire Strikes Back” was #1 overall. There are slow months for streaming services and then there are “choose a decade-old Chris Nolan movie as a header image” slow months for streaming services. Amazon Prime’s August 2020 clearly falls into the latter camp.
That’s not to say that there aren’t some interesting options arriving this month. August 1 has a few intriguing movies including Four Weddings and a Funeral, Inception, Rain Man, and even Spider-Man 3. But there aren’t many Amazon originals to speak of. Chemical Hearts, starring Lili Reinhart (Riverdale) premieres on August 20. Then on August 28, subscribers can get a sneak peek at Amazon’s new The Boys after show Prime Rewind: Inside the Boys.
After that, however, it’s pretty much just Capone on August 10. And who could turn down watching Tom Hardy just being the Hardiest?
Here is everything else arriving on Amazon Prime Video this month.

Time for an interesting little thought experiment. We all know that the upcoming Oscar ceremony has been delayed into April, with Academy Award hopefuls getting until the end of February to be released for consideration. However, today I want to think about what the Academy’s choices would be if they had held tight on their original date. As a way of making an extreme example, I’m just going to list the nominees based on films already out in release. Basically, this exercise is meant to show that it wouldn’t exactly be slim pickings if voters weren’t given quite as many movies to choose from, this time around. Sure, the nominees would look a lot different than usual, but at least in terms of winners, the victors would still be hugely deserving, that’s for sure. Take a look below at what an Oscar lineup would look like,...

When Lucasfilm announced that the studio was working with Jon Favreau on a new “Star Wars” series titled “The Mandalorian,” it was assumed that the series spawned from the previous development on the long-rumored “Boba Fett” spin-off feature. However, according to ‘Mandalorian’ filmmaker Dave Filoni, that’s actually not the case at all.

Speaking to Deadline, Filoni explained that “The Mandalorian” is actually a result of a brand-new idea from Favreau that hoped to expand on the bounty hunter culture of the “Star Wars” universe that was introduced by George Lucas.

It starts with a fake TV-show intro, a shootout, a getaway, and a couple of outlaws hitting the road like they were the Thelma and Louise of hardcore agit-pop rap. It’s no mystery that director Josh Trank had a notoriously bad time making the 2015 Fox superhero movie “Fantastic Four,” to the degree that he slept with a gun on his nightstand during production. It doesn’t stop there, as according to a new interview with The First Cut (via Geeks of Color), Trank said he was met by friction by the studio when he wanted to cast a Black actress in the role of Sue Storm, which eventually went to Kate Mara.
“There were lots of controversial conversations that were had behind the scenes [about a Black Sue Storm],” Trank said. “I was mostly interested in a Black Sue Storm and a Black Johnny Storm and a Black Franklin Storm. But when you’re dealing with a studio on a massive studio on a movie like [‘Fantastic Four’], everyone wants to keep an open mind to who the big stars are going to be…...

Josh Trank said that when he was directing the 2015 Marvel Comics flop “Fantastic Four,” Fox executives gave “pretty heavy pushback” on casting a black actress to play Sue Storm — even though she’s the superhero sister of Johnny Storm, played by Michael B. Jordan.
“There was a lot of controversial conversations that were had behind the scenes,” Trank said in an interview on Geeks of Color released Friday. “When it came down to it, I found a lot of pretty heavy pushback on casting a black woman in that role.”
Kate Mara, who is white, wound up playing the invisibility-powered Sue Storm — and she was explained to be the adopted daughter of Reg E. Cathey’s surgeon Franklin Storm.

On the usual Memorial Day holiday, the summer box office is just reaching high gear. This weekend was supposed to launch “F9” into the stratosphere — until the pandemic forced Universal to push back the latest “Fast & Furious” franchise title to April 2, 2021.
As May comes to a close, “Scoob!” is continuing its premium VOD success for Warner Bros. This weekend’s newbie was Paramount’s once-planned April release “The Lovebirds,” starring Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani, which showed up at Netflix, while several other originals launched with varying reactions.

As Hollywood adjusts to the coronavirus pandemic, a number of film distributors have chosen to scrap their theatrical release plans and launch certain titles on streaming services instead. That raised the question of whether those movies, such as “Trolls World Tour” or “Capone” or “The King of Staten Island,” would be eligible for Academy Awards. They now will be — at least, for this year. Variety chief film critics Owen Gleiberman and Peter Debruge discuss whether relaxing the rules is a good thing.
Owen Gleiberman: Well, Peter, the Oscars have now embraced streaming. Sort of. The question is: For how long? At the end of April, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences approved a temporary hold on the requirement that a movie needs to have a seven-day theatrical run at a commercial theater in Los Angeles County to become an Oscar contender. As movie theaters remain closed, studios have begun releasing certain titles on streaming platforms. Last month, Trolls World Tour went straight to VOD and broke records on its way to becoming the biggest digital debut ever. According to the latest reports, the Universal/DreamWorks Animation production is close to earning $100 million just off of Pvod.
It’s been such a success, in fact, that Universal announced shortly after that they would explore straight-to-streaming options in the future for certain titles and skip the theatrical run all together. Of course, this didn’t sit well with theater owners as major chains, including AMC and Regal, announced that they would ban all Universal releases from their cinemas in the future.

Chicago – “Capone” is the new Video-on-Demand release featuring Tom Hardy as the title character, and besides the obvious Chicago connection to the infamous gangster there are a number of supporting players in the film that are familiar – like Matt Dillon and Kyle MacLachlan – and new to the scene, like Tilda Del Toro.
“Capone” is a biopic that chronicles the final days of the notorious gangster. The 47-year old Al Capone, after 10 years in prison, remains under federal watch, as they think he may be faking his insanity. Forced to sell many of his belongings to pay his debts, Capone begins to have hallucinations, loses control of his motor functions, starts suffering from dementia and comes to be haunted by his violent past.

Josh Trank’s independently made “Capone” starring Tom Hardy has grossed over $2.5 million in rentals from various home viewing platforms after 10 days in VOD release. Distributor Vertical Entertainment, a major player in the straight-to-home release world, released these numbers along with the declaration that this is a record for the company.
Vertical has been a leader in handling films that were once known as a busted theatrical — familiar stars in films that were intended for theatrical release, but didn’t find a buyer. Instead, they find limited theaters and day-and-date home availability.
Hardy created elevated interest in “Capone.” Unlike luminaries such as Bruce Willis and Nicolas Cage, who can elevate a low-budget title action/genre into viewer appeal, Hardy remains a major star. And with the absence of most theaters, its appearance as a home exclusive, the release didn’t bear the feel of a discarded title.
Its performance has been quite good.
