Method Man’s star power was evident from the moment listeners heard him on Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), especially the album’s lone solo single, which carried his name. During our recent Zoom call, he tells me in his gravelly baritone that he’s still likely to listen to that project before the rest of his catalog. But it was only the beginning of a legendary career that continues well into his fifties. Albums like 1994’s Tical and 1999’s Blackout (with close friend Redman), as well as New York rap...

When discussing the story of “The Listeners,” both the novel by Jordan Tannahill and now the BBC Studios series from Janicza Bravo, the emphasis must be placed on the emotional rather than the literal. Yes, the premise centers on a woman who begins hearing a humming sound that nobody else can, but it’s also about the way isolation can create the conditions for otherwise ordinary people to become vulnerable to finding answers in dark places. Some completely fall down a rabbit hole of conspiracies, leaving those who loved them wondering what even happened to the person they thought they knew. For all the ways we believe ourselves to be fully rational and incapable of falling prey to this, “The Listeners” calls this into question in unsettling fashion.
These thorny yet critical ideas are expressed through the sharp eye of Bravo who, just as she did in the underrated “Lemon” and the brilliant “Zola,...

On December 15, the first season of Such Brave Girls will arrive. The sitcom follows a dysfunctional family – and we mean dysfunctional! – that includes real-life sisters Kat Sadler and Lizzie Davidson. British comedian Sadler has previously written for The News Quiz, Hypothetical, and Mel Giedroyc: Unforgivable, but this is her first big TV project. “Everything we joke about in the show is from a place of lived experience,” she told Funny Women. “I wish I could say this is a heart-warming show about overcoming trauma, but that would be a lie. It’s about three toxic, damaged egomaniacs manipulating the world and each other for their own personal gain, vengeance and glory…just like in Little Women.” Sounds good!

If you’re a fan of Mel Gibson’s classic action flicks, be sure to stream them before they leave Max at the end of August.
All four “Lethal Weapon” movies and “Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome,” starring the late, great Tina Turner, will be leaving the streaming service. Luckily, you’ll have all month to watch them.
Watching the new “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” animated movie in theaters? Max has several films featuring the radical reptilians: the live-action “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze” (1991)
and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III” (1993), as well as the animated “Tmnt” (2007).
Kaiju fans will want to check out “Godzilla” (2014), “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” (2019), “King Kong” (1933) and “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island” (2012).
Finally, if horror is your thing, six “Hellraiser” films and “The Ring Two” make great summer scares.
Here’s everything leaving Max in August 2023

In a development that may not be all that surprising, Don Lemon doesn’t seem to have many fans over at Fox News.
On Monday morning’s installment of “Fox & Friends First,” cohost Carley Shimkus and guest Beverly Hallberg broke down the former “CNN This Morning” anchor’s first interview since his firing, slamming the journalist for positioning himself as what Hallberg deemed “the arbiter of the truth.”
“I think it’s pretty laughable to most people,” she said.
The “Fox & Friends First” discussion kicked off Monday with Shimkus introducing the fact that in his first interview since being fired from CNN in April, Lemon maintained that he has and will continue to always “tell the truth” and “abide by the promises of the Constitution.”

The MTV series Teen Wolf – which was loosely inspired by the 1985 comedy film Teen Wolf (watch our Awfully Good video on that movie Here) – wrapped up its six season run back in 2017, and back in January it got a feature film follow-up on the Paramount+ streaming service. (Read our review of Teen Wolf: The Movie at This Link.) Now Paramount+ is hoping that movie is going to rack up multiple Primetime Emmy Awards nominations.
Variety reports that the streaming service has submitted Teen Wolf: The Movie for Emmys consideration in the following categories: Outstanding Television Movie, Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie (Tyler Posey), Directing (Russell Mulcahy), Writing, Prosthetic Makeup and Original Music and Lyrics (“Lemon” by Tyler Posey).
Since Posey was also a producer on the film, Variety notes that these submissions give him three chances to earn an Emmy nod.

The wolf pack is hoping for Emmys love.
“Teen Wolf: The Movie,” Paramount+’s adaptation of the MTV supernatural-thriller series, has been submitted for the Primetime Emmy Awards for outstanding television movie, Variety has learned exclusively.
Moreover, the streamer also submitted the film in five other categories: lead actor in a limited or anthology series or movie (Tyler Posey), directing (Russell Mulcahy), writing, prosthetic makeup and original music and lyrics (“Lemon” by Tyler Posey). This provides Posey, who plays the True Alpha werewolf Scott and produces the film, three chances for recognition.

Being the PR man was about the only job Jimmy Page didn’t have in Led Zeppelin. He and the band agreed to let the music more or less speak for itself, especially when the media said the group was all hype and no substance. Once Page gave up his hidden job in Led Zeppelin, it provided more time for his guitar playing to improve, which in turn led to more stellar songs and media praise.

We’re fast approaching the end of the Emmy eligibility window, which means there are few new shows of note and many ongoing series angling for our attention as they make their final turns and head down the homestretch.
Sunday marks the penultimate episode of HBO’s “Succession,” and while it’s hard to believe the two-time Emmy winner for Best Drama Series could manage to top itself after already delivering Logan’s (Brian Cox) death, Roman’s (Kieran Culkin) dramatic mountaintop confrontation, Tom (Matthew Macfadyen) and Shiv’s (Sarah Snook) balcony blowout and the Great Wasabi and Lemon Lacroix Incident of 2023, “Church and State” (airing at 9/8c on HBO and HBO Max) just might do it.

“Barry” returns for its fourth and final season. After the shocking Season 3 finale which saw Barry (Billy Hader) getting arrested and Cousineau (Henry Winkler) being hailed as a hero, there will be plenty of consequences for both. The dark comedy premieres on April 16 with two episodes.

On the drama side, the limited series “Love and Death” premieres on April 27. With its list of new releases for April 2023, HBO Max is premiering the final episodes of two major shows.
First up is the continuation of Titans season 4 on April 13. Returning after a four month hiatus, these next six episodes will be the last go around for HBO Max’s gritty live-action DC series. Arriving three days later on HBO proper is the fourth and final season of Barry. Bill Hader and the rest of the Barry team wrote themselves into a fascinating corner with the conclusion of season 3. And judging by the first teasers for season 4, this final batch of episodes will indeed catch up with our favorite actor/hitman in prison.
Other TV shows of note this month include the Pete Davidson-starring animated series Fired on Mars on April 20 (light ’em up) the the Elizabeth Olsen-starring true crime story Love & Death on April 27.

In the final season of HBO Max’s “Barry,” premiering on April 16, Barry’s arrest for the murder of Cousineau’s girlfriend leads to a shocking conclusion. Barry (Bill Hader), a hitman who stumbles into acting, explores the dark, often comedic underbelly of both LA gangsters and Hollywood. Henry Winkler stars as Cousineau, Barry’s acting teacher and the man forced to confront the reality of his former student.
Watch the “Barry” season 4 trailer:
Another crime story will come to HBO Max in April, although this one is based on a true story. “Love & Death” revolves around the murder of Betty Gore (played by Lily Rabe) in a small Texas town in 1980. Her husband Alan (Jesse Plemons) has an affair with Candy (Elizabeth Olsen), who attends their church. Suddenly, the thrills turn deadly. Candy picks up an ax, whacks her rival over 40 times, and then claims self-defense. The new...

There’s nothing quite like when HBO is airing one of its trademark watercooler-worthy dramas weekly. Thankfully, we’ll get to it experience exactly that and more on HBO Max in March 2023.
The big ticket item on HBO Max this March is undoubtedly Succession Season 4 on March 26. Part prestige drama and part screwball comedy, Succession is about as fun a watch as they come. Season 4 of the series about egregious wealth will find the Roy siblings reeling after trying and failing to take down their father, Logan (Brian Cox).
HBO Max’s other major TV option this month is another weekly release from HBO. Matthew Rhys returns as the titular lawyer in Perry Mason Season 2 on March 6. Season 1 of this period piece reboot flexed the classic TV character’s detective skills. From the look of the trailer, it seems as though this is the year Perry makes his name in the court room.

There’s a scene in Bullet Train that perfectly illustrates what a misfire this supposed action comedy is. A bunch of rival assassins with overlapping and clashing objectives are all on the same overnight high-speed train from Tokyo to Kyoto. Two of them — Brad Pitt’s “Ladybug” and Brian Tyree Henry’s “Lemon” — find themselves in a face-to-face encounter in the quiet car. Naturally, the confrontation turns violent. In a movie that actual took action comedy seriously, this might have been hilarious: How do you beat someone up, maybe even kill them, without making any noise? But here, after the barest nod to the need for silence, rowdy fisticuffs commence, and the only concession to comedy — allegedly — is Pitt snapping at the civilian who shushes them to “eat a bag of dicks”… and then apologizing, because, you see, he’s on a journey to be a better person.

Summer is about to finally, blessedly be in full swing. And to honor the occasion, Hulu is showing up big with its list of new releases for June 2022.
Hulu is bringing two major TV titles to its stream this month. The first is The Orville: New Horizons on June 2. Seth MacFarlane’s sci-fi/comedy started as a simple Star Trek parody on Fox before blossoming into its own entirely sincere space adventuring beast. Now “New Horizons” promises to be a fresh start for the series on Hulu. Next up is Only Murders in the Building season 2 on June 28. Season 1 of this Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez-starring series was a big hit. Let’s see if our favorite podcasters can pull it off once again.

Editors note: Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series debuts and celebrates the scripts of films that will be factors in this year’s movie awards race.
Since the birth of cinema, movies have adapted plays and books for source material. In recent years, comic books, video games and even podcasts have inspired feature films. Zola may be the first ever film adapted from a Twitter thread.
A’Ziah King told the story in an infamous 2015 Twitter thread under her name @_zolamoon. She began, “Y’all wanna hear a story about why me and this b**** here fell out????? It’s kind of long but full of suspense.”
Janicza Bravo’s film adaptation recounts the story of how Stefani (Riley Keough) invited Zola (Taylour Paige) — both Detroit waitresses — to Florida for a dancing gig. Stefani’s pimp, X (Colman Domingo), actually tried to set the girls up for sex work. Drugs, violence...

Local Natives have released a new cover EP after making a guest appearance on Apple TV Plus’ “The Shrink Next Door.”
The LA-based indie rock band appeared on the show, which stars Paul Rudd as Isaac “Ike” Herschkopf, a psychiatrist with a sinister past. The series is inspired by real-life events.
In the episode, Will Ferrell’s Marty meets Hannah (Christina Vidal Mitchell) at a local frame store and is smitten. He invites her as his date to the “Pen Gala.” But Hannah is quick to notice Ike’s not the character he seems and is taking advantage of Marty. It’s during the gala Local Natives make their mark.
The band appears as themselves, performing covers of soft-rock songs by Roxy Music, Gerry Rafferty, Michael McDonald, and 10cc.
“Music From The Pen Gala 1983” was recorded for the eight-part series and released after the episode aired.

Hollywood may not have always known what to do with Janicza Bravo, but she certainly knew what to do with it. The visionary filmmaker behind “Zola,” one of the year’s most inventive and incisive films, Bravo has said her films don’t typically fit the mold of what the industry expects from Black women.
Her first film, “Lemon,” was about an insufferable white guy. And while no one is better equipped to skewer insufferable white guys than a brilliant Black woman, that’s a fact most risk-averse executives are not usually smart enough to understand. Luckily for Bravo, and everyone else, A24 and Christine Vachon got it.
Bursting onto the summer film slate after a long theatrical hiatus, “Zola” offered a triumphant welcome home for cinephiles. After months of watching movies at home, “Zola” was a rousing assault on all those dormant senses. Bursting with vivid color shot by rising star Ari Wegner,...

There’s no date set for when “Canada’s Drag Race” Season 2 will premiere, but last month fans got more news about the judges’ panel shakeup that’s been in flux since March. Two judges are out and three new ones have been named.
Season 1 saw “RuPaul’s Drag Race” Season 11 runner-up Brooke Lynn Hytes, actor Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman and model Stacey McKenzie judging the 12 competing queens. In March, Jeffrey announced he wouldn’t be returning to the show, and in late June Stacey followed his lead. That left Brooke Lynn as the sole returning judge from Season 1.
The three new judges joining Brooke Lynn are actress Amanda Brugel, fashion stylist Brad Goreski and broadcaster Traci Melchor. Brooke Lynn, known as Brock Edward Hayhoe when not in drag, is a gay man, as is Brad. Both Amanda and Traci are straight women. The 50-50 split between gay men and straight women leaves zero...

Exclusive: A busy week for Judy Greer. Earlier we reported that she was starring in the indie film LA Bound, and today we hear she will play Mrs. G. in the Nicholas Ma directed feature Mabel.
Joy Goodwin and Ma wrote the script for Mabel which centers around Callie, whose only friends are the plants and trees that surround her home. When her dad’s job moves the family to a sterile subdivision, she is utterly isolated—except for her best friend, a potted plant named Mabel. To Callie, Mabel is a peer, a fellow being, maybe overlooked or unseen, but still very much alive.
Helen Estabrook, Luca Borghesde and Ben Howe are producing.
Greer is repped by Artists First, CAA and Felker Toczek.

FX has tapped “Zola” director and co-writer Janicza Bravo to direct the pilot of “Kindred,” starring Mallori Johnson in the lead role.
Based on the novel by Octavia E. Butler, “Kindred” follows Dana (Johnson), a young Black woman and aspiring writer who has moved to Los Angeles in pursuit of an independent future. She soon finds herself being pulled back and forth in time to an 1800s plantation to which her family is intimately linked. As an interracial romance weaves through her past and present, Dana struggles to confront the secrets she never knew ran through her blood.
Production is scheduled for September, with writer Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, Courtney Lee-Mitchell, Darren Aronofsky, Ari Handel, Joe Weisberg, Joel Fields, Ernestine Walker, Merrilee Heifetz and Bravo executive producing.
“I first read ‘Kindred’ 20 years ago,” Bravo said. “I was in college. I hadn’t ever seen myself in a world like that. And certainly not at its center.

There are a lot ways to describe “Zola,” the scandalously intoxicating mad-dog erotic-underworld drama with a title that doesn’t tell you much about it. It’s a true story so extravagant it feels like it must have been made up. It’s a mini volcano of sex and violence and danger and deception. It’s a close-to-the-bone portrait of women who work in the sex industry. It’s a youthquake as real as “American Honey.” It’s a piece of pure filmmaking bravura.
The movie first played at Sundance in 2020, and the reason it’s just coming out now is that it’s one of the rare independent films that was treated by its distributor — in this case, A24 — as a made-for-the-big-screen jewel, like “No Time to Die” or “West Side Story,” whose release would have to wait until we could start to see the post-pandemic theatrical landscape. “Zola...

We could label Janicza Bravo‘s sophomore feature as a road-trip misadventure and about getting a raw deal in a set number of twitter character space, but deep down its about the deconstruction of the incidental, shaping the narrative and about negotiating the terms in real time. Three years after premiering Lemon at the Sundance Film Festival, Bravo returns with Zola – A24’s first superhero film where a stripper outplays, outthinks, and outwits the overlords and the powers that be. I had the chance to sit down with the filmmaker and discuss how she worked at adapting the material, the creative use of narration, the use of sound, and creating a character who is we could relate as a power broker in her own right.…...

No sophomore slump for writer/director Janicza Bravo, who follows up her offbeat debut feature, “Lemon,” with a sensational cinematic rendering of A’Ziah “Zola” King’s now-iconic late 2015 Twitter thread detailing a wacky tale about how two Detroit exotic dancers make an impromptu “hoeism” trip to Florida that goes horribly awry. “It’s kind of long but full of suspense,” Zola cautioned her audience. And so began an odyssey, replete with segues into prostitution, murder, and attempted suicide, which quickly went viral, en route to becoming tragicomic fodder well-suited for a filmmaker who describes her lens as “a little bit unusual.”
Critical reaction to the curio that was “Lemon,” which world premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, was a mixed bag. Christine D’Souza Gelb, the veteran independent film financing and sales executive, has launched a new production and management venture with Killer Films executive David Hinojosa and Kevin Rowe as founding partners.
Named 2Am, the venue brings together a trio of considerable indie film players and boasts backing from one of the space’s most premium brands: A24.
The Oscar-winning studio behind titles like “Moonlight” and “Room,” as well as the TV hit “Euphoria,” has invested in the full-service company at an undisclosed share. 2Am will operate independently, insiders said, with no exclusive first look deal with the distributor.
Gelb left Endeavor Content last summer, where she had risen to partner and served as a fixture in brokering some of the most exciting films of the past decade and a half — including titles like Lulu Wang’s “The Farewell,” Ari Aster’s “Midsommar,” Kenneth Lonergan’s Oscar winner “Manchester by the Sea,...

Showtime’s upcoming anthology “The First Lady” has recast the role of Nancy Howe, with Judy Greer replacing Pamela Adlon, who had to leave the production due to a scheduling conflict.
Howe was the trusted confidante and social secretary of former first lady Betty Ford (who will be played Michelle Pfeiffer). Per Showtime, “The two were inseparable through thick and thin, from facing Betty’s struggle with breast cancer to turning dusty White House traditions upside down.”
Greer will appear on four episodes of “The First Lady,” which is described as “a revelatory reframing of American leadership, told through the lens of the women at the heart of the White House. In the East Wing of the White House, many of history’s most impactful and world-changing decisions have been hidden from view, made by America’s charismatic, complex and dynamic First Ladies. This series will peel back the curtain...
