Found footage horror films have masterfully burrowed their way into the heart of the horror genre, compelling us to peek between our fingers at the screen as they blur the line between fiction and unnerving reality, whispering, “Could this actually happen?” With their handheld chaos and too-close-for-comfort storytelling, these cinematic gems have redefined what it means to be truly scared, proving that sometimes, the most terrifying monsters are those that feel like they could be lurking just outside our windows. If you’re ready to unearth some tapes, we’ve dug up 10 found footage horror movies that master the art of realism, each so convincingly crafted you might just find yourself double-checking those locks tonight.
From ghastly ghouls to paranormal activities, these films utilize hand-held chaos to bring their terrifying tales to life. But what sets them apart? Their unnerving knack for making the absurd feel utterly believable. Forget high-budget...

Last December, when former “Silicon Valley” star T.J. Miller was accused of sexual assault by an anonymous woman and transphobic behavior by a film critic in the space of just two days, the actor and comedian was swiftly snipped from two big projects. First, Miller’s Comedy Central series “The Gorburger Show” was cancelled, then the mucus medication Mucinex dropped the comedian as its animated spokesperson. (He had previously left “Silicon Valley” in its fourth season, and the actor made it clear that he didn’t have any interest in returning to the HBO comedy; the newest season of the show has already nodded at killing his character off-screen.)
But one huge project didn’t abandon Miller: Steven Spielberg’s splashy new blockbuster, “Ready Player One,” which cast Miller as a bad guy in June of 2016, just one month before production was slated to begin on a production that Spielberg...

Lynn Shelton, who has found acclaim with Humpday and Your Sister’s Sister, returned to Toronto International Film Festival last fall with her drama Outside In. Starring Edie Falco and Jay Duplass as a teacher and former student, respectively, it follows the latter as he gets released from prison after two decades and they reconnect in unexpected ways. Now, ahead of a SXSW premiere and a release soon after, The Orchard has released the first trailer and poster.
We said in our review, “Although the narrative is being driven by the personal connections Chris builds following his prison stint, Shelton fails to break from convention, especially when it comes to the romance between Duplass and Falco’s characters, which has the kind of back and forth romantic yearning fit for a soap opera. It helps that they both have tremendous chemistry together; if that wasn’t the case, the relationship...

The transformation of Jay Duplass from indie filmmaker to serious actor has been fascinating to witness, the writer/director has blossomed from a breakout role in “Transparent” to his latest dramatic turn in “Outside In,” which has Duplass holding his own opposite the inimitable Edie Falco. Duplass co-wrote the script with director Lynn Shelton, whose singular films range from oddball comedies to brooding dramas. If its first trailer is any indication, “Outside In” is a rare blend of both styles, bouncing gingerly between dark comedy and humanist tragedy.
Duplass plays an ex-con named Chris, recently out of prison for an unknown crime. While he was away, he developed a correspondence with his former teacher, Carol (Falco). Upon his release, the two cautiously begin their real-life friendship, but it’s clear one or both of them harbors deeper feelings. Carol is stuck in a loveless marriage, but remains because of her...
