Kicking off this news round-up is a small but notable update that Quentin Tarantino plans to launch production on his final feature The Movie Critic this fall in Los Angeles, according to Production Weekly. With Brad Pitt currently the only confirmed cast member, it’ll follow a movie critic in 1977 wherein Tararantino will reimagine the production of a number of films.
Lynne Ramsay has been developing a handful of projects following 2017’s You Were Never Really Here, and we now finally have an update on which one is likely to shoot first. As reported by Variety out of Reykjavik’s Stockfish Film & Industry Festival, Ramsay confirmed she’s prepping to shoot the Jennifer Lawrence-led Die, My Love, based on Ariana Harwicz’s novel “about a woman living in isolation in rural France who loses her mind amid marriage and motherhood.”

Lynne Ramsay’s next film, Die, My Love, is said to be a Sylvia Plath-style tale of grief that will go before cameras later this year.
Lynne Ramsay’s career as a director spans a quarter of a century, yet she only has four films to her name. Still, when those four films are Ratcatcher, Morvern Callar, We Need to Talk About Kevin and 2017’s You Were Never Really Here, you have the kind of filmography that would make many a filmmaker envious.
Despite not being especially prolific, Ramsay is said to have several projects bubbling away at the minute. We’ve heard in the past that she’s planning to work with Joaquin Phoenix again (following their memorable collaboration in You Were Never Really Here) in Polaris, although its been a couple of years this that story first appeared. Then there’s Stone Mattress, a project featuring Julianne Moore,...

The Cinema for Gaza auction has added a Joker poster signed by Joaquin Phoenix and a Crown script signed by Emma Corrin, as it passes more than $200,000 in donations.
The campaign was launched last week by UK film professionals Hanna Flint, Julia Jackman, Leila Latif, Sophie Monks Kaufman and Helen Simmons, and has immediately taken off with works from the likes of Jonathan Glazer, Spike Lee and Tessa Thompson. The organizers had no backing or budget and largely organized efforts over a WhatsApp group chat launched over dinner in February.
The auction’s final lots now feature a Joker poster signed by Phoenix, a You Were Never Really Here poster signed by Phoenix and Lynne Ramsay, a Crown script signed by Emma Corrin, who played Princess Diana, a custom Cinema for Gaza painting by American History X director Tony Kaye and a chat with writer-comedian Julio Torres and custom tattoo design.

The second act of the 2024 remake of Road House climaxes with a nasty knockdown fight between UFC fighter turned bouncer Dalton (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Knox (UFC fighter turned actor Conor McGregor). Squishy sounds of smacked meat mix with a thumping rock song, like a second rhythm track every time the two ruffians punch each other. Early in the fight, the camera switches to first-person view as Knox batters his opponent before swinging around as Dalton takes his turn. It’s all bathed in yellow light, with the sickly glow cut only by neon beer signs hanging on the walls.
In short, the Road House remake is trash.
But it is wonderful trash, full of cheeseball crowd-pleasing, gnarly action, and some genuine humor. Road House had me cheering and pumping my fist in the air. Well, it would have, had I been watching it in a movie theater full of fans...

Anyone looking to debate the limits of progress should cast an eye on 1980s Ireland. As a generation born in revolution and civil war moved from farms to towns, a middle class emerged. Some people had televisions; if they were good, some of their kids had Levi’s jeans. As certain things loosened, the Catholic church’s grip on most aspects of Irish life seemed to only grow tighter. Between 1922 and 1996, and aided by a callow state, the church was responsible for imprisoning tens of thousands of women (mostly young single mothers who couldn’t afford the child) into what was essentially indentured servitude. In these “laundries,” women worked seven days a week and weren’t allowed to leave. Their babies were taken from them and sold for adoption, or worse. Around 1,600 women died. The number of babies is estimated to be in the thousands.

Yann Mounir Demange quite literally blasted onto the scene back in 2014 with his feature debut about a stranded British soldier (Jack O’Connell) with nowhere to hide, but to move forward in a hostile Belfast circa 1971 (hence the provenance of the film’s title ’71). Born in Paris to a French mother and an Algerian father, the filmmaker would establish himself in the British film scene before Hollywood came knocking and yet we feel that it’s with his short, Dammi where we find the filmmaker at his most personal. Launched at 2023 Locarno Film Festival (with a trip to TIFF shortly after), this professional palette cleanser (before he sets off to make Blade) brings him back to his roots, and this is mostly due to a creative partnership formed with Rosa Attab (producer on Lynne Ramsay’s You Were Never Really Here).…...

Exclusive: Amazon MGM’s Head of Specialty Theatrical Distribution, Mark Boxer, was among the notables cuts yesterday at the streaming theatrical studio.
Among some of Boxer’s highlights at Amazon, he oversaw the specialty theatrical releases of such Oscar nominated titles as Being the Ricardos, Poland’s 2018 International film entry Cold War, and 2x Oscar winner Sound of Metal.
With Amazon’s acquisition of MGM, Boxer was a key suit in getting Ben Affleck’s Air into theaters. He was also recently involved in the successful release strategies for awards season titles Saltburn, The Boys in the Boat and American Fiction.
During the pandemic, Boxer also handled the theatrical distribution of such big Prime Video acquisition titles, Coming 2 America, Cinderella, Hotel Transylvania 4, and The Tomorrow War to those cinemas and drive-ins that were lucky to be open.

What is Joaquin Phoenix so unhappy about? And so twitchy? We’ve all seen someone triumph at the Oscars and use their acceptance speech to push a social cause. But I’ve never seen a speech quite like the one Phoenix gave in 2020 when he took the best actor award for “Joker.” The film had gotten mixed reviews from critics (what were they so unhappy about?), so the win carried an element of vindication. Yet Phoenix treated the moment like a plea of desperation combined with a dirge.
Stroking his face and beard with a slightly manic pensive concern, he said, “I’ve been thinking a lot about some of the distressing issues that we are facing collectively.” Then, in a free-form ramble about the various modes of injustice, and how they’re really all the same, he observed that “many of us, what we’re guilty of is an egocentric worldview,...

You’ll recall in 2013, one of the most anticipated movies of what would have been the next year suddenly fell apart, much to the chagrin of cinephiles everywhere. The movie was the Western “Jane Got A Gun” that was supposed to be directed by the great Lynne Ramsay, and it was supposed to star Natalie Portman, Michael Fassbender, Joel Edgerton, and Jude Law.

Slade’s previous work has received critical acclaim, with his first feature “Hard Candy” winning the jury and audience first prize at the 2005 Sitges Film Festival of Horror, before being acquired by Lionsgate out of Sundance. He also shown a flare for studio-driven and franchise films, such as Summit’s “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” and “30 Days of Night” for Sony. There are a few actors in Hollywood who have developed a reputation for totally committing to their roles. Joaquin Phoenix is one such star, a dedicated actor who has been a working performer since he was a child. Known for his occasionally eccentric behavior both on and off-set, Phoenix has portrayed real-life historical figures such as Johnny Cash, along with mythical villains such as the Joker.
Phoenix’s newest role is bound to be one of his most buzzworthy. As Napoleon Bonaparte in an upcoming historical drama, Phoenix is already making headlines for his work. Notably, rumors recently started swirling that Phoenix slapped his co-star on the film, albeit for a rather unexpected reason.

Just recently, we shared the news that Lynne Ramsay, who hasn’t released feature film since 2017’s “You Were Never Really Here,” has wrapped up production on a new film, “Polaris,” with star Joaquin Phoenix. That’s enough to get excited, as we rarely get new Ramsay films. However, the filmmaker is also teasing more projects coming down the pipeline, including another star-studded affair as Jennifer Lawrence is teaming up with the filmmaker for the upcoming film, “Die, My Love.” And though, the subject matter and title of the film would lead you to believe it’s a drama, the filmmaker thinks it’s actually a hilarious comedy.

Lynne Ramsay hasn’t made a feature film since 2017’s “You Were Never Really Here,” but the “We Need to Talk About Kevin” director is hard at work on a wide range of films. She’s currently in post-production on “Polaris,” a mysterious original film that reunites her with Phoenix (who stars alongside Rooney Mara). While appearing at the Sarajevo Film Festival over the weekend, Ramsay offered some hints about future projects she hopes to direct (via Variety).
After “Polaris” — which may hit theaters under the title “Dark Slides” — Ramsay said she is developing an adaptation of Ariana Harwicz’s novel “Die, My Love” as a starring vehicle for Jennifer Lawrence. The novel tells the story of a woman who deals with extreme mental health problems after giving birth in a secluded French village.
“It’s quite simple,” Ramsay said of the project. “It’s not set in the Arctic.

Receiving a lifetime achievement award this week at the Sarajevo Film Festival, Scottish director Lynne Ramsay teased a slew of projects currently in the pipeline, heralding her much-anticipated return to the director’s chair since wowing Cannes in 2017 with the Joaquin Phoenix-starring thriller “You Were Never Really Here.”
Among them are a second collaboration with Phoenix, who earned best actor honors on the Croisette for that performance, as well as “Stone Mattress,” a revenge thriller set aboard a luxury Arctic cruise that stars Julianne Moore and Sandra Oh. There’s also “Die, My Love,” starring Jennifer Lawrence, which is based on the novel by Argentinian writer Ariana Harwicz about a woman living in isolation in rural France who loses her mind amid marriage and motherhood.
Then there’s the long-gestating “Moby Dick” film adaptation that the director has said would transport Herman Melville’s nautical epic into outer space.

On the website for Mubi, the international cinema platform describes itself in several ways: “A streaming service? A curator? A publisher? A distributor? A cinema lover? Yes.”
Yet in a recent online conversation hosted by Sundance Collab, the Sundance Institute’s educational service, Mubi Chief Content Officer Jason Ropell added another facet to Mubi’s motives: Netflix alternative.
Ropell, the former head of Amazon Studio’s film division, said in a revealing conversation with Sundance programmer John Nein that, while Mubi takes SVOD rights for both films it buys and produces in-house, it takes a more expansive approach to other revenue streams, from theatrical to PVOD.
“In contrast, Netflix will create or buy a film and it will only be on Netflix,” Ropell said. “It’s the exclusive access to the platform that’s their value proposition. Our job is to support films through every facet of the distribution chain.

When the Sarajevo Film Festival returned to full strength last year after successive, slimmed-down pandemic editions, a robust turn-out was to be expected. For nearly three decades, the audience-facing event has been the cultural lifeblood of the lively, cosmopolitan city it calls home.
The 2022 edition broke attendance records set in 2019, and just days after its online ticketing system launched this month, the fest appears on pace to surpass that mark again. It is a testament to the enduring love affair between a city and a festival that was founded in impossible circumstances in 1995, at the tail end of a brutal, four-year siege — proof that even in times of war and scarcity, cinema could endure.
The festival returns Aug. 11 – 18, with organizers insisting the event’s 29th edition will stay true to its roots. “We wanted to keep the festival focused on its main goals: presenting the best of cinema today to...

Acclaimed Scottish director Lynne Ramsay will receive the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo award, the lifetime achievement honor of the Sarajevo Film Festival. Ramsay will be presented with the award at this year’s Bosnian festival on Aug. 16 at a gala event followed by the screening of her 2017 feature You Were Never Really Here. The psychological crime drama premiered in Cannes, where it won best screenplay honors for Ramsay and the best actor prize for star Joaquin Phoenix.
Ramsay has been a feature on the international art house scene since 1996, when her student short, Smalls and Death, won the Prix de Jury in Cannes. She repeated the feat in 1998 with Gasman and also brought her 1998 debut Ratcatcher to the French festival, premiering in Un Certain Regard, where it won a special mention from the jury. The drama, a coming-of-age story set in 1970s Glasgow, also won Ramsay a BAFTA for most promising newcomer.

Having directed only four films over the last quarter-century, we’re not holding our breath when we may see the next feature from Scottish director Lynne Ramsay. However, with a handful of projects in development, we’ve been curious which one she’ll focus her attention on in the coming years. Courtesy of a masterclass at Doha Film Institute’s Qumra 2023, she’s now provided some updates on a quarter of projects in the hopper.
As reported by Screen Daily, Ramsay says first up she hopes to shoot Stone Mattress––an adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s 2011 short story for The New Yorker that will star Julianne Moore and Sandra Oh––starting this year. Backed by Amazon and adapted by Ramsay with Tom Townend, the thriller is set on an Arctic cruise ship. “It’s such a challenge, that film because it’s a boat in the Arctic – it [needs] all the elements aligning,...

So, we’re quite curious to learn what is going on with the various films Ramsay has been developing over the last couple of years, and thankfully she is giving us some fresh updates on where everything stands.

She has been attached to several new projects since You Were Never Really Here was released and we’ve got a massive update thanks to the Screen Daily folks covering Doha Film Institute’s Qumra Event. The first film out of the gate for Lynne Ramsay will be the adaptation of a short story from Atwood’s 2014 collection of the same name which is “about a woman (Julianne Moore) who goes on a cruise in a frozen region and encounters a man who raped her 50 years ago. “It’s such a challenge, that film because it’s a boat in the Arctic – it [needs] all the elements aligning.”…...

UK director Lynne Ramsay has given updates on a raft of projects she has on the boil, including her fresh collaboration with Joaquin Phoenix, on the fringes of the Doha Film Institute’s Qumra talent incubator this weekend.
She revealed that her adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s short story Stone Mattress remains in development, with Julianne Moore and Sandra Oh still attached.
Deadline exclusively revealed the Amazon-backed project last May during the Cannes Film Festival and there were reports it would start shooting in September 2022.
The tale revolves around a woman in her sixties who plots a revenge killing against the backdrop of a luxury Arctic cruise when she meets a man from a traumatic incident in her past.
“It’s hard to put together because it’s set in the Arctic and I’ve made it quite a high-end ship. It’s complex.”

Today Disney+ has released a new trailer for the upcoming docu-special "Bono & The Edge: A Sort of Homecoming, with Dave Letterman." Not only are we getting a chance to watch U2's Bono and The Edge head back to Dublin, but they're also taking the talk show host with them for his first-ever visit to Ireland. The band members have been friends with Letterman for 25 years, but they've never been off U.S. soil together.
The whole thing is set to coincide with the release of U2's new album "Songs of Surrender," which is "a collection of 40 seminal U2 songs from across the band's catalog, re-recorded and reimagined." The use of "reimagined" is interesting here because, in the trailer, Letterman mentions the changing of lyrics to some of the songs as things have changed in their lives. He introduces the band members to a crowd at a concert, which...

The 2023 Grammy Awards are especially competitive in top categories this year. Record of the Year and Song of the Year seem especially tough to call, with Adele‘s “Easy on Me” and Harry Styles‘ “As It was” jockeying for top position in our current Gold Derby odds. Most prognosticators will choose one over the other in both categories — but is that the smart choice? How often do these categories see a split between two artists? And how often do they match up?
See Will the Grammys do something ‘Unholy’ for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance?
Since 2000, 12 artists have swept the two General Field categories: “Smooth” by Santana (2000), “Beautiful Day” by U2 (2001), “Don’t Know Why” by Norah Jones in 2003, “Not Ready to Make Nice” by The Chicks (2007), “Rehab” by Amy Winehouse (2008), “Need You Now” by Lady A (2011), “Rolling in the Deep” by Adele (2012), “Stay With My” by Sam Smith (2015), “Hello...

Beyonce keeps making history at the Grammys, but when it comes to the top four general field categories, she keeps not winning. Out of 28 career victories to date, only one has been in the general field: Song of the Year for “Single Ladies” in 2010. This year she became the most nominated artist of all time (tied at 88 with her husband Jay-Z), and in the process she became the all-time most nominated artist for Record of the Year. Will she win that coveted prize for the first time this year?

In the early days of filming “All the Beauty and the Bloodshed,” nonfiction filmmaker Laura Poitras didn’t have a clear grasp on what the shape of her latest documentary would be, but she was clear what her portrait of famed artist and activist Nan Goldin wouldn’t be.
“We weren’t gonna make a biography,” Poitras told IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast. “One thing I try to do as a filmmaker is to not hear the story that people repeat about their life over and over. We all do that. We all tell a story and we go into a kind of a mode of repeating, but how could it feel in the present in a really meaningful way.”

Jennifer Lawrence has joined the cast of ‘You Were Never Really Here’ filmmaker Lynne Ramsay’s ‘Die, My Love.’
The adaptation is based on Ariana Harwicz’s novel of the same name. Based in the French countryside. The story follows a woman who is battling her demons: embracing exclusion yet wanting to belong, craving freedom whilst feeling trapped, and yearning for family life but wanting to burn the entire house down.
Given surprising leeway by her family for her increasingly erratic behaviour, she nevertheless feels ever more stifled and repressed.
Also in news – Lupita Nyong’o cast in ‘A Quiet Place’ Spinoff ‘Day One’

The New York Times just published a Jennifer Lawrence profile anchored in the actress’ stated desire to no longer play in a studio-sized, franchise-shaped mold, which is of course what actors say when promoting smaller, more independent fare. (The fare in this case being Causeway—a work we found underwhelming as dramatic material but a reminder of how gifted she actually is.) Though in the put-up-or-shut-up divide this is a pretty good case of putting up: there’s quick notice she and Lynne Ramsay are planning to collaborate on an adaptation of Ariana Harwicz’s Die, My Love.
If there’s temptation to note Ramsay’s hardly moved the needle since You Were Never Really Here, regularly attaching herself to projects that never materialize—the last few years alone have brought word of a Margaret Atwood adaptation, a Stephen King adaptation, and a Rooney Mara / Joaquin Phoenix project—a star...

When Ireland were just 14 runs away from securing their Super 12 spot and brushing aside the West Indies, the DJ at the Bellerive Oval was playing U2’s blockbuster song ‘Beautiful Day’ in the backdrop of their highly vocal supporters cheering loudly for Andrew Balbirnie & Co to wrap the match quickly.
Ireland would eventually hunt down 147 with 15 balls remaining, with Lorcan Tucker finishing off the chase in style, skipping down the pitch and converting a half-volley from left-arm fast bowler Obed McCoy into a loft over cover for four to give his side the ticket to Super 12.
What really stood out from Ireland’s drubbing of the West Indies, who were a pale shadow of their two-time championship winning self, was the manner in which the nine-wicket win was executed. On the pitch not offering much pace, Ireland executed their plans of getting West Indies batters caught at longer boundaries and...

We Need to Talk About Jennifer: Lawrence Returning to Indie Roots with Possible Lynne Ramsay Project
Currently in London to promote Lila Neugebauer’s Causeway at the London BFI, Jennifer Lawrence let slip that she has been developing a new project with one of our faves in Lynne Ramsay – a filmmaker she admits to being “obsessed with” as per Screen Daily’s reporting. With her production company Excellent Cadaver, Lawrence could pretty much back an auteur project with meat on the bone. Currently Lynne Ramsay has Stone Mattress on the stove and possibly Polaris next with Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara. Could this future project with Lawrence be the epic environmental horror that was alluding to back when she was doing the press rounds for You Were Never Really Here?…...

Newton series The Big Cigar has rounded out its cast, with Jaime Ray Newman (Dopesick), Noah Emmerich (Dark Winds), John Doman (City on a Hill), Chris Brochu (Zero Contact) and newcomer Brenton Allen coming aboard in recurring roles. André Holland leads the cast, with Alessandro Nivola, Tiffany Boone, Pj Byrne, Marc Menchaca, Jordane Christie, Moses Ingram, Olli Haaskivi and Glynn Turman also set to star, as previously announced.
The six-episode limited series, based on the eponymous Playboy magazine article by Argo‘s Joshuah Bearman, tells the extraordinary, hilarious, almost-too-good-to-be-true story of how Black Panther leader Newton (Holland) relied on his best friend, Bert Schneider (Nivola) — the Hollywood producer behind Easy Rider — to elude a nationwide manhunt and escape to Cuba while being pursued into exile by the FBI.
Newman will play Roz Torrance, with Emmerich as Schneider’s brother Stanley, and Doman as his father Abe.

In the five years since the Joaquin Phoenix-led You Were Never Really Here, Lynne Ramsay has circled a number of projects but now, at long last, seems to have settled on one that’s moving forward.
The Scottish director will direct Stone Mattress, an adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s 2011 short story for The New Yorker, that will star Julianne Moore and Sandra Oh. Backed by Amazon and adapted by Ramsay with Tom Townend, the thriller is set on an Arctic cruise ship and production is already set to begin this September in Greenland and Iceland. Check out the synopsis below via Deadline.
