Speaking of thrillers that play at the edge of horror– Hunting Daze stands out as a peculiar, yet captivating piece. Directed by the Canadian filmmaker Annick Blanc, who also co-produced and wrote the screenplay, this film is a testament to the blurry lines between genres, offering an experience that is as haunting as it is elusive.
At the heart of Hunting Daze is Nina (Nahéma Ricci), a young and spirited stripper who finds herself marooned in a northern Quebec forest town. Luckily, she’s able to convince a group of five men on a bachelor party/hunting trip to put her up for a few days while she waits for a bus back to the city. Within this exclusively male domain- filled with dumb jokes, silly games, lots of partying, and wolf pack philosophy- Nina discovers a surprising sense of acceptance. However, the arrival of a mysterious stranger threatens to upend the group dynamic,...

During the 2022 SXSW Film Festival, co-writers/co-directors Joseph and Vanessa Winter celebrated the world premiere of their low-budget, high-ambition throwback horror movie, Deadstream, as part of the fest’s Midnighters slate. Centered around a disgraced streamer (played by Joseph Winter) who sets out to win back his fans by livestreaming from a haunted house, the online personality gets more than he bargained for after he accidentally angers an evil spirit who is hellbent on making sure he pays for his misdeeds before the sun comes up.
While in Austin, Daily Dead had the opportunity to speak with the married creatives, who discussed the inspirations behind their approach to Deadstream, the challenges they faced in making sure the film felt like an authentic streaming experience, the film’s unique locale which became like another character in the project, and the duo also gush (and rightfully so) over the brilliant special effects...

A forest ranger plunges deep into the jungle on a routine observation mission and finds herself face to face with a pair of unkempt survivalists teetering on what seems to be the edge of paranoid madness in South African director Jaco Bouwer's Gaia, one of the most compelling films in SXSW 2021's Midnighters lineup. Blending ancient paganistic mythologies with modern technophobia and eco-horror, Gaia extends a long tradition of the so-called primitive as sage genre narrative while incorporating old ideas in new ways to create something familiar and fresh. Gabi and her supervisor, Winston (Anthony Oseyemi) abandon their normal river route when a camera drone mysteriously goes down in the forest. Bull-headed Gabi insists they go after the wreckage against Winston's...

Saban Films has acquired North American rights to John Berardo’s Initiation. The horror crime thriller was previously selected for a world premiere in the Midnighters section at SXSW under its original title Dembanger. Xyz Films is on international rights and is introducing the pic during the Cannes virtual market.
Inspired by Berardo’s short film about the perils of posting on social media, Initiation is scripted by the director alongside fellow USC Sca and UCLA Tft alumni Brian Frager and Lindsay Lavanchy.
Described as a slasher pic about a cruel social media game that spins out of control, Initiation sees Whiton University unravel on the night a star-athlete is murdered in the wake of a buried assault allegation, kicking off a spree of social media-linked slayings.
