Leanne Morgan’s current tour is called Just Getting Started, and the 58-year-old comedian is living up to that with a comedy series and two more specials at Netflix. The streamer has given a 16-episode order to an untitled multi-cam sitcom, headlined by Morgan in her TV acting debut and executive produced by top comedy showrunner Chuck Lorre. Additionally, Netflix has picked up two more stand-up specials from Morgan following the success of her first one, the 2023 Leanne Morgan: I’m Every Woman.
Co-created by Morgan, Lorre and Susan McMartin, the Untitled Leanne Morgan Project will follow Leanne whose life is upended when her husband of 33 years leaves her for another woman. Starting over when you’re a grandmother and in menopause isn’t exactly what she had in mind, but with the help of her family, she will navigate this new chapter with grace, dignity and jello salad.

Anne Hathaway has been acting professionally since she was a teenager. And yet, she’s pretty sure she’s only scratched the surface of what she can and wants to do in her career.
In her new film “She Came to Me,” written and directed by Rebecca Miller and in theaters now, Hathaway stars as a therapist-turned-wife to Peter Dinklage’s character, an opera composer. But, by the end of the film, Patricia (Hathaway) is a therapist-turned-nun, who answered what she felt was her higher calling.
Tack that onto the other roles she’s played — a princess (later a queen) in “The Princess Diaries,” Catwoman in “The Dark Knight Rises,” an astronaut in “Interstellar,” to name a few — Hathaway has gotten a lot of variety on screen. So,...

Tony Bennett is a music legend the world will never forget. Sadly, he died in July 2023 due to Alzheimer’s disease — and he had a history of cocaine and cannabis use that he opened up about years prior to his death. Here’s what Tony Bennett said about stopping his drug use before he had to step into a rehabilitation center.
Tony Bennett explained how he stopped his drug use without rehab
The legendary Tony Bennett was no stranger to drug use. And through the years, he opened up about his addiction to cocaine. When he and his family moved to Hollywood in the 1970s, his drug abuse went from zero to 60.
“On top of everything else, the ’70s drug scene was getting out of control,” he wrote in his 1998 memoir, The Good Life, according to Today. “At every big party I’d go to, people were high on something.

There will always been a place in the world for older-skewing movies as pleasant as “Queen Bees,” a lightweight but likable comedy set primarily in a retirement community where close friendships are forged — sometimes reluctantly, sometimes immediately — and autumnal romance can blossom. For years, their natural habitat has been bargain-matinee multiplex screenings, where over-50 ticketbuyers might attend solo, in groups or accompanied by children and/or grandchildren. More recently, viewing options have expanded to include the modern miracle of VOD. But any way you look at it, director Michael Lembeck’s indie offering is bound to please nearly anyone in its target demographic who isn’t easily offended by unmistakable indications that, as the old saying goes, although there’s snow on the roof, fire can still burn in the hearth.

“Saturday Night Live” officially has the most wins in Emmy history for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics. At Sunday’s 2018 Creative Arts, the 43-year series just won its third Emmy in the category, for the song “Come Back Barack” written by Eli Brueggemann, Chris Redd, Will Stephen and Kenan Thompson. (Watch our fun interview with Thompson.) By claiming gold, “Come Back Barack” essentially stopped Benj Pasek and Justin Paul from earning an Egot this time around.
“Come Back Barack” from “Saturday Night Live” was predicted to win this category by most Gold Derby users, having 1/5 odds. The song is an ode to old R&B groups of the ‘80s and ‘90s, with Redd, Thompson and Chance the Rapper wistfully pleading for Barack Obama to return to the White House and replace the current administration. Bruegemann and Stephen had five previous Emmy nominations each. This was Redd’s first Emmy nomination,...

You know what would be music to “Saturday Night Live’s” ears? If it wins Best Music and Lyrics for “Come Back, Barack” at the Emmys, which would give the show a record three wins in the category.
“SNL” is tied at two with “The Carol Burnett Show” and “The Simpsons.” “The Carol Burnett Show” won for “Cinderella Gets It On” in 1976 and “Hi-Hat” in 1978; the latter was a tie with “See You Tomorrow in Class” from “The Sentry Collection Presents Ben Vereen: His Roots.” “The Simpsons” grabbed back-to-back trophies in 1997 and ’98 for “We Put the Spring in Springfield” and “You’re Checkin’ In (A Musical Tribute to the Betty Ford Center),” respectively. “SNL” has Justin Timberlake to thank for its two wins; the first was for “Dick in a Box” in 2007 and the second came in 2011 for the singer’s monologue.

This year’s Emmy race in the music categories takes on greater interest because a win in the song category could instantly give songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul an Egot, having already won Oscar, Tony and Grammy awards.
Pasek and Paul — whose “La La Land,” “Greatest Showman” and “Dear Evan Hansen” songs have catapulted them into the front ranks of American songwriters in the past two years — are nominated for their new song, “In the Market for a Miracle,” written for Fox’s “A Christmas Story Live,” an adaptation of their 2012 stage musical.

At the age of 96, Carl Reiner remains impressively engaged with life.
He tweets daily to his 237K Twitter followers, often in criticism of President Trump. A tweet he posted on Friday garnered 12,000 likes: “I ask: Is there anything more upsetting than having our blow-hard, self serving President meet with foreign leaders and, suppossedly [sic], on our behalf, make deals that make him and his billionaire friends richer?”
And he keeps on top of the news, like the recent controversy over late night TV host Samantha Bee, who earned widespread censure after she called Ivanka Trump the “c” word.
“I know Samantha Bee, and I know she’s not a racist or anything,” Reiner tells Deadline. “She’s a very good soul, and she made a mistake and she apologized profusely, and it’s a little different than what Roseanne did. It’s quite a bit different because Samantha Bee’s heart is in the right place.

For the third week in a row, Disney and Pixar’s Coco held onto the top spot at the box office. Earning an estimated $18.3 million, the animated hit finished with almost twice the box office of second-place finisher Justice League, which itself brought in $9.6 million. In just three weeks, Coco has earned $135.5 million domestically. However, it’s run at the top likely comes to an end this week when Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens.
Diminishing box office continues as third-place finisher Wonder, brought in $8.5 million ($4 million less than last week). In only its second week of release, the James Franco-directed indie hit The Disaster Artist made its way into the Top Ten with $6.4 million, which was good enough to best Thor: Ragnarok’s $6.3 million and claim sole possession of fourth place. Though, the God of Thunder probably isn’t too sad as his film has already made $301.2 million during its six-week run.

James Franco's modest project The Disaster Artist took in a respectable $6.4 million as it went into wide release over the weekend, but it couldn't catch up to Coco, which finished at the top for the third weekend in a row. It also finished behind Justice League and Wonder, another small-budget hit.

Grosses this weekend were seasonably typical, which means as lousy as most early December weekends. With “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” looming large, most companies are avoiding new wide releases. That makes a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Like “Moana” last year, a Disney animated title leads the pack for a third straight week: Pixar’s “Coco” continues to be a strong performer, well-positioned to play well through the lucrative holidays ahead. “Coco” should easily continue in two-thirds or more of its dates, even though it started lower than last year’s “Moana.”
Unlike last year, no new wide release boosted results, which will come in just under the same weekend in 2016 at around $80 million total. Last year saw “Office Christmas Party” open to $17 million. This year, the sole film to risk opening wide was the senior citizen comedy “Just Getting Started” (Broad Green). It managed a poor $3.2 million, good enough only for...

Disney and Pixar's Coco topped the weekend box office for the third week in a row. In fact, the only shake-up in the weekend top five compared to the last two weeks is to see A24's The Disaster Artist landing in fourth position as it expanded into 840 theaters this weekend following its strong limited bow last week. As for the weekend's only new wide release, Broad Green's release of Just Getting Started struggled to finish over $3 million, barely eking into the top ten. With an estimated $18.6 million, Disney and Pixar's Coco topped the weekend box office as its domestic gross climbs to $135.5 million domestically. While the film's opening weekend was closer to that of 2000's Tangled, it has since started playing closer to Disney's Moana, which also topped the weekend box office for three straight weeks last year following its Thanksgiving debut prior to ceding the #1 spot to Rogue One.

“Just Getting Started” is described on IMDb as “a two-hander action comedy” in the vein of “Midnight Run.” But anyone can see within five minutes that this mild and dawdling picture from writer-director Ron Shelton is the sort of trifle meant for a retirement-age audience who just want to spend a pleasant and uneventful hour-and-a-half with a few name actors of a certain age. There’s very little comedy here and even less action. This is the first Shelton feature since the ill-fated “Hollywood Homicide” in 2003, and he stays close to what made his name with his most notable movie,...

A film that is not screened in advance for the press is not likely to be an undiscovered masterpiece. But it is not necessarily going to be as bad as such neglect suggests. Just Getting Started, the first feature written and directed by Ron Shelton in more than a decade, is sneaking into theaters without much attention. Shelton, the filmmaker behind such hits as Bull Durham, White Men Can’t Jump and Tin Cup, hasn’t matched those movies with his new comedy, but given his track record and the cast he’s assembled, headed by Oscar winners Morgan Freeman and Tommy Lee Jones,...

Welcome to this week’s “Preview Reel” column, where we look at the week’s upcoming wide-release movies. Coco dominated the Thanksgiving holiday and then again last weekend. There are no signs that it will slow down as there is only one major release scheduled for this week, the Morgan Freeman-led comedy Just Getting Started. Disney has been enjoying a good last couple of months as they released Thor: Ragnarok, Coco, and has Star Wars: The Last Jedi coming out next week. Until then, let’s see if Just Getting Started is worth your time.
Just Getting Started
What we are excited about: The cast is about the only thing we’re excited about with this movie. Morgan Freeman, Tommy Lee Jones, and Rene Russo together in a comedy sounds promising. Add in the director of Tin Cup (1996) and Bull Durham (1988), Ron Shelton, and you should at least get a solidly entertaining movie.

Morgan Freeman and Tommy Lee Jones team up for the first time ever in Just Getting Started, directed by Ron Shelton (Bull Durham, White Men Can't Jump). Freeman plays a former mob lawyer who entered the witness protection program after he testified against his former employers, while Jones portrays a former FBI agent. They've both retired to a quiet retirement community, but their strong competitive juices are on full display in our highly-amusing exclusive clip. The two gentlemen...

Disney and Pixar's Coco led the post-Thanksgiving frame in what was a repeat of last weekend's top five thanks in large part to no new wide releases this weekend. That doesn't mean there isn't anything to discuss as A24 enjoyed a great weekend with Lady Bird continuing its strong play and the studio's much-talked about feature The Disaster Artist finished just outside the top ten in its limited bow from just 19 locations. Additionally, Fox Searchlight's The Shape of Water was the weekend's per theater champ after opening in just two locations. At the top, Coco added an estimated $26.1 million this weekend bringing the film's cume to $108.7 million after 12 days in release. The result is no surprise and the 48.6% second weekend drop is smaller than both of the comps we've been using throughout its release as Moana dropped 50% in its sophomore frame and Tangled dropped 56%. Both films finished their domestic runs over $200 million,...

5th Update Sunday Am: Disney/Pixar’s Coco easily takes No. 1 with $26.1M per Disney which is $2.1M lighter than what Moana did in the post Thanksgiving period a year ago. The princess halo always give any Disney property an extra bump and that’s one of the reasons why Coco is pacing 9% behind the Pacific Princess with $108.7M. Coco will easily own next weekend as the major studios continue to take a break from any wide entries. The ratcheted-down Broad Green is the only distributor braving it this coming Friday with the Tommy Lee Jones-Morgan Freeman-Rene Russo action comedy Just Getting Started. Specialty distributors in the wake of Golden Globe and SAG Award nominations will continue to expand wide. As we mentioned yesterday, there’s more moolah this year in the post Thanksgiving sleepy frame with ComScore reporting $105M, a 9.4% spike over the same weekend a year ago.

Want to watch a big movie, opening this weekend? Go see “Titanic,” the 20th anniversary of the biggest hit in the past 35 years, in a special-event rerelease in 87 AMC Theaters. Beyond that, you’re out of luck. The weekend also sees multi-hundred theater expansions of two initially strong specialized titles: Greta Gerwig’s New York Film Critics winner “Lady Bird” (A24) and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” (Fox Searchlight). We’ll also see domination by holdovers like “Coco” (Disney), “Justice League” (Warner Bros.), and the surging “Wonder” (Lionsgate).

“Coco” (Disney/Pixar) outgrossed by a wide margin the second weekend of DC’s “Justice League” over the five-day Thanksgiving weekend. Their robust numbers were buttressed by strong holds for several other films, led by the second weekend of “Wonder” (Lionsgate) along with other holdovers that showed surprising signs of renewed life.
The holiday weekend was about three per cent ahead of a year ago, a welcome increase looking forward to the lucrative Christmas period. That’s positive, though it marks a minimally acceptable performance given two films at the top with a combined budget of a half-billion dollars.
Pixar’s “Coco” fell short of other recent animated Thanksgiving holiday releases (including “Moana” last year and “Frozen” in 2013), but its $71-million five-day total combined with an A+ Cinemascore (only the fifth this year, and third since January) suggests a shot at a total gross of $275 million or higher with strong play through Christmas.

Okay. We’re hooked. Morgan Freeman. Tommy Lee Jones. Rene Russo. Oh, yes…there’s Ron Shelton, too. Though we haven’t seen much from director Shelton for a while, he is back, and his new action comedy already has a lot going for it. It’s scheduled to open on December 8th. Morgan Freeman and Tommy Lee Jones star, with a cast including Glenne Headly, Rene Russo, Joe Pantoliano, Elizabeth Ashley, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Graham Beckel, and Mel Raido. Hammond brothers let go of approximately 20% of workforce.
Broad Green co-founders Gabriel and Daniel Hammond have closed their production department and laid off 15 of the 75-strong staff following a string of under-performing films.
Gabriel and Daniel Hammond, who serve as CEO and chief creative officer respectively, plan to reconfigure Broad Green’s operations and find a new way to source films.
The acquisitions team is expected to be on the ground in Toronto and other festivals, and the company has scheduled a November 22 release for Morgan Freeman and Tommy Lee Jones caper film Villa Capri.

Broad Green: How Wall Street Wealth, A-List Talent, and Brash Decisions Made an Indie Player Implode
It takes guts to join the indie distribution fray, especially when the market is challenged by big buyers like Netflix and Amazon Studios (which, along with Annapurna, is optimistically taking over its own theatrical distribution) and television is chasing down the hottest indie talent. Even one-time high-flyer The Weinstein Co., which once knew better than anyone how to play the indie game, is evolving to survive during these changing times.
When Wall Street billionaires Gabriel Hammond, 38, and his brother, Daniel, 34, launched independent producer-distributor Broad Green Pictures three summers ago, Hollywood was skeptical. It was a strange time to reinvent a dying economic model.
Now, after trying to use arcane algorithms to determine what movies to make, Gabriel has decided to pull the plug on production. The breaking point was the July 14 release of John Leonetti’s “Wish Upon,” which grossed $13.2 million on a $12 million budget. (Theaters return about half of the take to the distributor,...

After making a brief impression in Terrence Malick’s Song to Song and following a part in this summer’s The Big Sick, Holly Hunter will take the lead in Strange Weather. The drama, which premiered at Toronto International Film Festival last fall, is directed by Katherine Dieckmann (who helmed the underrated Diggers) and follows a woman who searches for resolution after the death of her son.
Ahead of a late July release, the first trailer has now landed, which previews what looks to be a strong central performance from Hunter. While we missed it at Tiff last year, reactions seemed to be mostly strong, so we’re looking forward to checking it out. Also starring Carrie Coon, Kim Coates, and Glenne Headly, see the trailer below.
Academy Award winner Holly Hunter gets behind the wheel in this engrossing story of a woman’s quest for rectitude in the wake of harrowing loss.

It was baffling when distributor Broad Green Pictures pulled Lucy Walker’s “Untitled Buena Vista Social Club Documentary” from the Sundance Film Festival on January 20, the same day as its intended premiere, with a press release that said the “post production process has taken longer than expected.”
