Welcome to the dystopian future, where car oil costs more than life, you need an authorised card to get clean water, and cars are run on human blood.
In the first episode of Syfy's new series from writer James Roland and directed by David Straiton, welcome to the Blood Drive in a flurry of blood, guts, sex and violence.
Arthur was just a normal cop until he came across a gang of misfits, law breakers, and freaks, feeding people into their car engines, and readying for a large across America race. After being found by the ringmaster's henchman, Arthur ends up in the deadly race, partnered with Grace d'Argento. With bombs in their necks so they can't run away, or abandon their partner, Arthur is forced to fight for his life as Grace drives them through the maniacal race that is know as the Blood Drive.
When I first saw the first episode trailered on Syfy, I knew I just had to give this series a shot. I wasn't expecting much, in all honesty. Most of Syfy's stuff isn't that great, and it's hard to think this came from the same television broadcasting company that created Five- Headed Shark Attack. I was expecting a four, maybe five star episode that didn't do much for the series.
However, my low expectations definitely let me in for a wild ride.
This pilot episode was absolutely amazing. There was nothing about it I didn't like. The characters are all strong, and well developed, and with a strong female lead, I fell in love very quickly. It's a wonderful change to see the female in a male and female lead pairing be the stronger one for a while. All the characters are very well developed, as I've already said, but they all feel real. Watching this show, feels like all the characters have their own lives, and you're watching this as if the road race is happening in your world; it feels like you could go outside and see them race by. The soundtrack in this is absolutely stunning, and the choice to use Marilyn Manson's mOBSCENE was a brilliant one – it definitely dragged me in as someone who grow up listening to his music; it fit the whole scene really well. The soundtrack throughout the whole first episode – throughout the whole first season – does absolute wonders for the show. The acting, as well, was something I found really well done, and I fell in love with so many of the characters so quickly. Colin Cunningham, who plays Julian Slink, does an absolutely spectacular job, and if he doesn't win an award for his work as Julian, I will honestly be shocked. He helps run the show, both the Blood Drive and the show itself, and it definitely would not be the same without Julian; Julian wouldn't be the same if he wasn't played by Cunningham, at all.
All in all, this series is off to an absolutely spectacular start, and I am so incredibly excited to see more of it and see where Roland takes this, and I can't wait to see what a hopeful second season has in store for us all.
