British auteur Andrea Arnold follows up her last feature, the poignant, non-verbal slice-of-farmyard-life that is the documentary Cow, with a new member of her cinematic menagerie: drama Bird, an uplifting competitor for Cannes’ Palme d’Or.
With mostly human characters and actual dialogue, in some ways this is taxonomically more like her gritty-as-asphalt, early social-realist work, especially Fish Tank and Oscar-winning short Wasp, which, like Bird, were shot in the southerly county of Kent, U.K., where Arnold grew up. But then suddenly, out of the milieu’s marshy semi-urban landscape of empty beer cans, cigarette butts, domestic abuse and despair, the film takes magical-realist flight and transforms into something unlike anything Arnold’s done before. Thanks to the director’s magisterial knack with actors (especially non-professionals such as terrific adolescent discovery Nykiya Adams, who, as the protagonist, is in nearly every frame of the film), the result is quite entrancing.

“Dickinson” showrunner Alena Smith detailed the challenges of making the Apple TV+ period drama show starring Hailee Steinfeld as its queer female lead, playing poet Emily Dickinson. Apple kept her in the dark about the show’s success, Smith said, which made creating the show significantly more difficult.
The first season of the series arrived on the streamer in 2019, the second one on Jan. 8, 2021. Season 3 concluded the arc Smith envisioned for the project and came out Nov. 5, 2021.
Describing what drove streaming services to make creative projects, Smith explained to Harper’s Magazine that streamers were looking to grow their subscriber numbers by taking big creative swings that pulled in new audiences.
“It’s like a whole world of intellectuals and artists got a multibillion-dollar grant from the tech world,” Smith said. “But we mistook that, and were frankly actively gaslit into thinking that that was because they cared about art.

How does a girl perceive her mother? Lucy is facing that reality in the new film “Janet Planet.” Set in the early ‘90s, this coming-of-age film highlights how complicated the relationship can be. The A24 film hails from Annie Baker, who previously wrote an episode of the Prime Video series “I Love Dick.”
The Playlist’s Gregory Ellwood noted the connection between Baker’s direction and Maria von Hausswolf’s cinematography, calling it “exquisite.” “Whether it’s a close-up of a dangling earring or Janet getting swept up in line dancing, the perspective is always intentional,” he wrote after its 2023 Telluride premiere.

Kathryn Hahn has a type. Since starring in Joey Soloway’s “Afternoon Delight” in 2013, the actor has spent a decade delivering nuanced portrayals of messy, horny, hilarious women who bluster their way through middle age. It is a miracle of modern television that Hahn’s hyper-specific specialty has supported three separate series: “I Love Dick,” also helmed by Soloway; “Mrs. Fletcher”; and now, “Tiny Beautiful Things.”
Created by Liz Tigelaar of “Little Fires Everywhere,” the Hulu half-hour casts Hahn as a fictional version of Cheryl Strayed, the memoirist and advice columnist who rose to fame by blending both forms into one. The show is adapted from the 2012 book of the same name, a collection of essays Strayed first published under the moniker Dear Sugar. Strayed met her readers’ deeply personal disclosures with some of her own, sharing her experience with addiction, grief and abuse in long missives more meandering and literary than straightforward tips.

Indisputably the best female-centric werewolf movie shot in Canada since Ginger Snaps (2000) — admittedly not the most competitive of fields — sensual queer horror story My Animal marks an impressive, confident feature debut for several key talents. First and foremost, debutante director Jacqueline Castel, already an experienced short film and music video helmer who has collaborated with David Lynch and John Carpenter, imbues this first-feature script by Jae Matthews with a woozy, dreamy, retro sensibility. (Matthews is also half of the electronic band Boy Harsher along with Augustus Muller, who contribute a very John Carpenter-esque soundtrack of sustained drones and bass-heavy humming.)
Altogether, the team creates a richly hued setting for the young but in some ways more seasoned leads. Bobbi Salvor Menuez (I Love Dick) stars as a lovelorn teen-wolf living in the sticks who looks at Amandla Stenberg’s (Bodies Bodies Bodies) figure skater with the kind of longing you...

In 2022, slasher movies reigned supreme. From the nostalgia-ripping "Scream" sequel to Ti West's bloody "X" trilogy, fans of the genre were treated to a bit of everything. This is especially true with the slasher-comedy "Bodies Bodies Bodies," which saw a new, unlikely horror star emerge. Amandla Stenberg, previously known for their work in YA novel adaptations, has solidified themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the genre. They may have their own "Star Wars" show in the works, but Stenberg is not leaving horror fans behind any time soon, either.

Last Year’s Winner: Uzo Aduba, “Mrs. America”
Still Eligible: No.
Hot Streak: The same actor hasn’t repeated in this category since Regina King took home back-to-back trophies for “American Crime” in 2015 and 2016 — which is the only time anyone has garnered consecutive wins in a category not exactly conducive to repetition — but nominees from streaming series have won the last three years running.
Fun Fact: As is the case surprisingly often with the Emmys, the actor with the most nominations in category history is not among the most awarded winners. Kathy Bates has seven nominations here
Notable Ineligible Series: “American Crime Story: Impeachment” (the season did not air in time to be eligible); “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” (submitted as a Drama Series)
At the bottom of this page are IndieWire Deputy TV Editor Ben Travers’ predictions for Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series, Anthology Series, or TV Movie.

“Good Trouble” star Sherry Cola is joining the cast of Adele Lim’s upcoming R-rated comedy about a group of four friends traveling through Asia in search of one of their birth mothers. Cola will appear opposite Ashley Park (“Emily in Paris”) as one of the film’s leads.
The movie, which is being produced by Lionsgate and Point Grey Pictures, marks Lim’s directorial debut. The screenplay was written by Cherry Chevapravatdumrong (“Family Guy”) and Teresa Hsiao (“Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens”). The three will produce alongside Point Grey’s Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, James Weaver and Josh Fagen. Meredith Wieck and Chisom Ude will oversee the project for Lionsgate.
As the women at the center of the film travel through the region, their experience becomes one of bonding, friendship, belonging and no-holds-barred wild debauchery that reveals the universal truth of what it means to know and love who you are.

Exclusive: Roberta Colindrez will star opposite Gael Garcia Bernal in his Amazon movie about “The Liberace of Lucha Libre”, Cassandro.
Colindrez will play best friends with Bernal’s Saúl Armendáriz as she finds community in the Lucha Libre world training young fighters. The pic, produced by Ted Hope and Todd Black, is shooting in Mexico City.
Cassandro, directed by 2x Emmy nominated filmmaker Roger Ross Williams, tells the true story of Armendáriz, a gay amateur wrestler from El Paso who rises to international stardom after he creates the “exotico” character Cassandro, the “Liberace of Lucha Libre,” and in the process upends not just the macho wrestling world but also his own life. Armendáriz at the age of 15 quit school and began training for Lucha Libre, beginning his professional wrestling career in 1988 under the mask as Mister Romano. Ultimately he would abandon the character and take on the exotico character of Baby Sharon.

Launching April 9 with two back-to-back episodes, “Doing the Most With Phoebe Robinson” is the multi-hyphenate’s take on a talk show — but instead of sitting down on plush couches for a few minutes of banter about her guest’s latest project, they’re taking their discussion out into the world, sometimes over a friendly archery competition, sometimes in a recording booth, sometimes while wine tasting and, in the premiere episode, on horseback.
“The biggest inspiration for this show is honestly, I’m such a workaholic and so many people I know are [as well]. I spent so much time building my career and focusing, writing books or doing stand-up or podcasting or acting. And...

The play – not quite a one-woman show, but very nearly – features Schreck as she recounts her teenage, tuition-paying fascination with Constitutional debate competitions. A Pulitzer Prize finalist, Constitution uses both comedy and intense personal reflection to chart the impact the founding document has had on four generations of women in Schreck’s family.

Exclusive: Syfy’s Tzgz weekly late-night animation block has given a straight-to-series order to The Summoner, from Stoopid Buddy Stoodios and writer, actor and New Yorker cartoonist Charlie Hankin.
Greenlit for 10 three-minute episodes to premiere next year, The Summoner is a 2D-animated series based on the short film from Hankin about Rory and his challenging roommate. (You can watch it below the story.) Rory, in his 20s and living on his own for the first time, has found himself in a small two-bedroom with the Summoner, a magical alien with the power to summon any object to his present location. This sounds potentially useful, but it isn’t—the Summoner has a tenuous grasp of English and only summons the most useless shit.
“The Summoner is a perfect example of how we’re experimenting with content for Tzgz by continuing to add smart stories from unique voices, but also playing...

Jason Bateman won Best Drama Directing for “Ozark” last year, but was not even on that ballot for its third season this year. Bateman instead appeared on the Best Drama Directing ballot for the pilot of “The Outsider,” the new drama that brought in big ratings for HBO, but came up short for Emmy nominations. He gave up an easy nomination by not continuing to submit in the race for “Ozark,” a curious slight against a show that is perceived to be his baby, given his additional roles as its lead actor and executive producer. But by stepping aside, Bateman has shifted the focus to the others Netflix submitted in his place for “Ozark” in the Best Drama Directing race.
