The contender to watch this week: “Uncropped”
A perfect companion piece to “The Freaks Came Out to Write,” Tricia Romano‘s new book about the history of The Village Voice, “Uncropped” profiles one of the iconoclastic newspaper’s signature photographers. James Hamilton captured the streets of New York, musicians like Patti Smith and the Beastie Boys, wartime conflicts in China and the Philippines, and production stills for the likes of Francis Ford Coppola and Wes Anderson. His juicy career is detailed in this unconventional documentary directed by D.W. Young (“The Booksellers”), who stages a handful of intimate conversations between Hamilton and his collaborators, including Anderson and Sonic Youth frontman Thurston Moore. Following a limited theatrical release in April, “Uncropped” is available on VOD.

With the tsunami of action blockbusters flooding the multiplex, you might think that the movie studios have forgotten that Spring (despite some near ninety-degree days) is the season for romance. So, where are the love stories? Actually, this new one is only streaming, though it’s certainly worthy of a theatrical run, After all, it stars an Oscar-winning actress and its director has made two films that “took home the gold”. Plus it’s based on a popular novel, though in many ways it’s a modern media gloss on a fairy tale. Mind you, the “princess” is unlike any we’ve met as this is more of a May/December pairing (minus the tons of angst of that flick from last year). Like that classic Nat King Cole tune, each of these unlikely lovers is smitten with The Idea Of You.
We first meet one of the “yous” in the film’s opening scene.

2023 was a tumultuous year for the film industry, with lengthy writers and actors strikes bringing Hollywood productions to a grinding halt and forcing fall festivals to proceed without their typical red carpet star power. But amid all the chaos, it slowly emerged as one of the best years for cinema in recent memory. Just take a look at the 50 best movies of 2023, as determined by IndieWire’s annual critics survey.
158 critics voted in our end-of-year poll, and the resulting top 50 films of the year are the closest you’ll find to a truly global critical consensus about the year’s best films.
The concept of Barbenheimer — that “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” would release on the same day, July 21 — grew in the minds of cinephiles in the months leading up to both films actually unspooling on screens. How extraordinary is it that these films actually lived up to the hype? They are...

Captain Kerry Titheradge has given Stew Barbie Pascual some praise that she’s definitely not getting on Below Deck from Fraser Olender.
This week, Below Deck viewers watched as drunk charter guest Eileen fell getting out of the hot tub.
Barbie ran to help her and then escorted the guest safely down to her cabin.
It wasn’t an easy task — considering Eileen’s condition — but Barbie did it, and with humor to keep Eileen calm.
As Monsters and Critics previously reported, Below Deck fans have sounded off on Eileen and Tina over their behavior, and Barbie got props for not drop-kicking Eileen down the stairs.
Now, Captain Kerry has added to that by speaking out and crediting Barbie for her behavior.

Ottessa Moshfegh may have been channeling Hitchcock for her screenplay for William Oldroyd’s “Eileen,” but star Marin Ireland turned to a much different filmmaker for creative inspiration on the 1960s-set noir. The film was co-written by Luke Goebel.

The release of "Drive-Away Dolls" has been marked by most of the trades as the first solo directorial feature of Ethan Coen, following his brother Joel's 2021 outing with "The Tragedy of Macbeth." And sure, it's a catchy headline to acknowledge that one-half of one of cinema's greatest directorial partnerships is stepping out on his own, but that doesn't tell the full story. For one thing, Ethan Coen already made his solo directorial debut with the documentary "Jerry Lee Lewis: Trouble in Mind." More importantly, "Drive-Away Dolls" may have Coen listed as the solo director, but if you ask him, this was yet another co-directed project, but this time with his wife and longtime Coen Bros. editor, Tricia Cooke.
Cooke first worked with the Coens as an editor on "Miller's Crossing" fresh out of film school, seeking out the job not because they were the esteemed directors of "Blood Simple" and Raising Arizona" fame,...

Anne Hathaway is a splendid actress with an Oscar to her credit, yet people find reasons to hate her. Recently, an old video of her went viral on social media, which sparked a debate among the netizens on whether she is rude. Anne has been called rude and fake before, and one of the most infamous occasions was her Oscar acceptance speech. She received a lot of flak for that.
She became popular after appearing in films like The Princess Diaries franchise, Devil Wears Prada, and more. She got the Academy Award in Supporting Role for her role in Les Miserables. According to reports, filmmakers avoided doing movies with her because of her reputation with the public. This year, Sundance saw big deals go down for “A Real Pain”, “It’s What’s Inside”, “Presence” (Neon), and “My Old Ass” as well as smaller acquisitions for “Kneecap” (Sony Pictures Classics), “Ghostlight” (IFC Films), and “Ibelin”(Netflix).
It’s not the same bull market as the old days, but we’ll take it. And while streamers made their presence felt with the two largest acquisitions to date, it’s clear that for most of these films theatrical will be part of their lifecycles. But is that a smart move?
Based on last year’s results, the answer is: Could be. Domestic box office from all Sundance 2023 films was the best for any year since Covid. At around $100 million, it quadrupled the take from 2022 Festival titles (around $25 million). All told, about two thirds of the 2023 films have some sort of domestic distribution, including streaming outlets. Of these, about a dozen films have yet to open.

Eileen Movie Review Rating:
Star Cast: Thomasin McKenzie, Shea Whigham, Marin Ireland, Owen Teague, Anne Hathaway
Director: William Oldroyd
Review of Eileen Is Out! (Picture Credit: Youtube)
What’s Good: Thomasin McKenzie’s portrayal of Eileen is refreshing, devoid of traditional expectations, while Anne Hathaway captivates with her artificial yet electric depiction of Rebecca. Marin Ireland’s exceptional performance adds authentic trauma, and the film’s cold, desolate portrayal of women resonates.
What’s Bad: The narrative loses its initial psychological complexity, devolving into a thinly developed crime plot. The film needs to work on the balance between psychosexual strangeness and a more conventional storyline, leaving the audience uncertain about its direction.
Loo Break: “‘Eileen” offers a brief pause around the 45-minute mark when Eileen enters Rebecca’s office. Feel free to take a break but return promptly for the unfolding narrative.
Watch or Not?: “Eileen” is a film...

David Ayer has been making action movies for more than 20 years. "Training Day" might still be his most famous credit as a writer, but he also has writing credits on "The Fast and The Furious," "U-571," and "S.W.A.T." and he later wrote and directed films like "End of Watch," "Fury," "Sabotage," and "Suicide Squad" (the latter of which was infamously recut by Warner Bros. before its release). With all of that experience, one might assume he'd be the one imparting advice or doling out nuggets of mastery on the set of his latest action film, "The Beekeeper." But as I learned in a recent interview with the director, Ayer is smart enough to know when to listen -- especially when working with a genre superstar like Jason Statham.
"He schooled me," Ayer told me about his collaboration with Statham on their new movie. "I mean, let's be real: He's an action icon,...

Neon released a cryptic new teaser for an unnamed horror film that had the internet playing guessing games early on Friday. While the studio has yet to confirm what movie it’s for, this teaser, which played out a 9-1-1 call against a Polaroid, is likely for the Nicolas Cage thriller Longlegs. Indeed, the teaser ends with a shot of suspiciously long legs, so…
The film is directed by Oz Perkins, son of Psycho star Anthony Perkins, who previously directed the well-received chillers The Blackout’s Daughter, I Am The Pretty Thing That Lives in the House, and Greta and Hansel. The movie stars genre fave Maika Monroe as a young FBI agent on the trail of a serial killer with ties to the occult. Welcome to the Scene to Seen Podcast. I am Valerie Complex Associate editor and film writer at Deadline.
I have a disclaimer. I talk to actress Thomasin Mackenzie, director William Oldroyd, script writers Ottessa Moshfeg and Luke Goebel, about the Neon film Eileen, but this episode is going to be split into two.
First half is a separate interview with Thomasin Mackenzie and the second half is a full interview with Moshfegh, Goebel and Oldroyd. Think of this as the Eileen hour! Hope you can cut me some slack because they couldn’t record together!
Eileen is adapted from the novel of the same name written by Ottessa Moshfeg. Alongside Mackenzie, the film stars Ann Hathaway, Shea Wigham, Marin Ireland, and Siobhan Fallon Hogan.

As we wrap up our year-end coverage, IndieWire looks back at the people, projects, and ideas that defined 2023 — and what’s coming next.
If the antihero was the poster child for peak TV, then the downright off-putting and repulsive heroes of the story were ambassadors for film in 2023. Expulsion, waste, and self-destruction — bodily and psychic — were on the minds and in the guts of many of this year’s most divisive and in some cases beloved movies.
We’ve all seen the social media tagline that such and such “changed my DNA.” In a moment in which postures of self-deprecation and flagrant wallowing in our own soupy misery define internet expression, it’s only natural that the movies would respond — and the quote-unquote repulsiveness of such characters is borne out of a desire to transform, and maybe become, in the words of Radiohead, something happier, better.

In the halcyon days of 2017, Anne Hathaway was attached to Sony’s Barbie movie. You’ll be surprised to hear it never came out.
Greta Gerwig’s Barbie might be one of the few bright spots on Warner Bros. accounts sheet this year, but once upon a time it was Sony that was eyeing up a stay at the dream house, with Anne Hathaway set to star.
In a recent interview with the Happy Sad Confused podcast, though, the Eileen actor seems pretty at piece with her lapsed shot at plastic stardom – and had some very nice things to say about Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, too.

This article contains major spoilers for "Eileen."
A lot of people know what they want when they buy a ticket to see a movie, or buy it on physical media, or click on a title in the streaming service of their choice. If it looks like a romantic comedy, they expect a romantic comedy, and they're likely to be disappointed if they get something else instead. This is where the concept of genre comes from, the desire to categorize films based on tangible qualities, so the audiences in the mood for certain storytelling or artistic styles can find what they're looking for. It's comforting to have at least some idea of what you're going to get, even if you don't know how exactly you are going to get it.
But then there are films like William Oldroyd's "Eileen."
"Eileen" has elements of crime movies and thrillers and prison dramas and coming of age stories,...

Emily Blunt has hailed 'The Devil Wears Prada' as the movie that "changed my life".The 40-year-old actress played the role of Emily Charlton in the 2006 movie and is amazed at how popular it continues to be with audiences. In conversation with co-star Anne Hathaway for Variety's 'Actors on Actors' series, Emily said: "We just had a joy bomb of a time on that movie. I don't know if any of us knew it was going to become what it did. It's quoted to me every week. It will be the movie that changed my life."The 'Jungle Cruise' star also recalled how cruelly she treated Anne's character Andrea 'Andy' Sachs in the picture set in the world of fashion.Emily said: "I would laugh all the time because I was so horrible to you most of the time in this movie. And it was your little face – this beautiful,...

The line-up for the new series of Variety’s Actors On Actors has been revealed, with high profile movie performers interviewing each other.
Variety’s Actors On Actors is one of the most delightful series you can watch as a film fan. The central conceit is that two actors sit down for a natter about their work, often going off on tangents, acting as a unique insight into the industry.
Generally, the pairings are quite surprising, with the actors concerned often never having worked together or, in some cases, seeming quite random, but each one is fascinating and, usually, an absolute hoot. You can see Kate Winslet shooting the breeze with Gary Oldman, for example, or Beanie Feldstein with Florence Pugh.
This year’s “Actors on Actors” lineup includes:
Margot Robbie (“Barbie”) & Cillian Murphy (“Oppenheimer”)
Robert Downey Jr. (“Oppenheimer”) & Mark Ruffalo (“Poor Things”)
Emily Blunt (“Oppenheimer”) & Anne Hathaway (“Eileen...

This post contains spoilers for "Eileen."
William Oldroyd's "Eileen," a quiet drama between two women (Thomasin McKenzie and Anne Hathaway) working at a Massachusetts prison in the 1960s, is one of the best movies of 2023. I was enjoying the film for its first two acts when I saw it back in January at this year's Sundance Film Festival (final warning: Turn back now if you haven't seen it yet!), but I still remember the burst of electricity that coursed through my body when a major moment happens near the end that totally alters the DNA of the film and takes it in a wildly unexpected direction.
Anne Hathaway remembers that moment, too. Not just the crowd's reaction to it at the Sundance premiere, which took her by surprise at how intense it was, but performing the specific take on set that was used in the final cut. "You do...

Parasitic obsession poisons the roots of William Oldroyd’s perverse noir romance “Eileen.” The film is adapted by screenwriter Ottessa Moshfegh and her partner Luke Goebel from her own mean and pungent novella about a repressed 24-year-old prison secretary who, in 1964 Massachusetts, falls under the spell of a beautiful, blond-headed Harvard-grad psychologist named, of all things, Rebecca. Is that on-the-nose-Hitchcockian enough for you?
Eileen is played by Thomasin McKenzie, while Rebecca is played by Anne Hathaway, who slurps martinis and says things like “I shouldn’t smoke, but I do.” She drifts into Eileen’s world like a vapor, and then, just as quickly, is gone. But not without bringing chaos crashing down onto Eileen’s life amid a depraved dance of muted desire.
Hathaway, who is now nominated for a Film Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Performer, certainly evokes Katharine Hepburn (and maybe even Cate Blanchett’s...

This past weekend was a bit erratic with a few movies doing surprisingly better than others, but this weekend, there’s really only one new wide release, as much of December’s big holiday releases don’t hit until next week. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
The one wide release is Gkids’ release of Hayao Miyazaki‘s latest animated feature, “The Boy and the Heron,” which has been playing in select cities but will get a nationwide release into roughly 1,800 theaters in both subtitled and dubbed versions, the latter often being the chosen format for parents with young kids. Miyazaki always gets amazing Western voice casts, this one including Robert Pattinson, Christian Bale, Mark Hamill, Willem Dafoe and many more.
Although Miyazaki’s “Ponyo,” distributed by Disney, is still seen as his biggest box office success in North America with just $15 million, his movies always do...
