Organizers of the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, the world’s oldest and most important animation festival, revealed Thursday that all the big U.S. studio animation players will be in attendance this year to preview some of their most exciting upcoming titles.
Annecy has long been a launch point for global and indie animation, but over the past several years, it has become an increasingly important platform for big studios as well. This year, that trend continues and, indeed, ramps up.
Illumination will continue a popular tradition by hosting a special screening of “Despicable Me 4” in Annecy. The three previous “Despicable” films and the “Minions: The Rise of Gru” spinoff all screened at Annecy, several of them making their world premieres there.
Disney will host sneak peeks of its 2024 animated feature releases: Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” and Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Moana 2.” Paramount Pictures and Hasbro...

In 2022, teenagers flocked to cinemas dressed in suits and tuxedos, there to see and celebrate the Illumination film Minions: The Rise of Gru. It was part of a trend, apparently developed organically, called #GentleMinions, of young fans celebrating (some, perhaps ironically) the film franchise with which they grew up.
Universal, which distributed the film, was, suffice it to say, thrilled, and the film ultimately delivered more than $939 million at the box office.
This year, Illumination has another film in the franchise hitting theaters, Despicable Me 4, and the studio is once again betting on a dose of social media virality to kick-start its campaign, turning to an athlete known as “The Joker.”
On Saturday, Nikola Jokić, the star NBA center for the Denver Nuggets, arrived for the team’s playoff game against the Los Angeles Lakers dressed suspiciously like Gru, the franchise’s protagonist. It quickly went viral, with memes and jokes all over TikTok,...

CinemaCon attendees got an extended clip from Illumination’s Despicable Me 4 at Universal’s presentation Wednesday in Las Vegas.
In it, Gru (Steve Carell) teams with the villainess Poppy (Joey King) to steal a honey badger from a castle/private school. Two Minions and Gru’s baby son Junior are in tow. Calamity ensues as the honey badger awakes and creates havoc, with Gru getting hit in the butt with a tranquilizer shot.
Illumination Boss Chris Meledandri introduced the clip today at the Caesars Colosseum, thanking exhibitors for the sleeper success of his animation studio’s Migration ($293 million in box office).
“In case of any doubt, our commitment to produce original animation film remains steadfast,” said Meledandri.

A busy holdover weekend for wide studio releases was led by the trio of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Kung Fu Panda 4 and Dune: Part Two. And, in a soaring performance, Hayao Miyazaki’s Oscar winner The Boy and the Heron swooped into China helping the market set a new Qingming holiday record.
Meanwhile, Best Picture Oscar winner Oppenheimer, boosted by its release in Japan, has now become Christopher Nolan’s biggest movie ever at the international box office.
Before we dig into all of that, there was also fresh blood in some overseas areas with Disney/20th Century Studios’ The First Omen debuting to $9.1M from 43 markets (about 76% of the offshore landscape and notably not including France and Germany which go next weekend). This is about as expected. The global bow is $17.5M.
Latin America leans in on horror and the prequel performed best in Mexico where it opened No.

When it comes to children’s toys, one of the most popular brands is Lego. For decades, the Lego brand has given children worldwide tools to mix and match and create their own worlds and stories with their various sets. In recent years, they have partnered with multiple large licenses such as Star Wars and Marvel.
Now, in a surprise announcement Lego has revealed their latest brand partnership, that being with Universal’s animation studio Illumination. The partnership between the two companies will begin with two sets based on the upcoming Despicable Me 4 film.
The two sets are Despicable Me and Minions, which features a large Gru and four Minions, and Gru’s Family Mansion, which is a more traditional set with Gru’s house and other members of his family. Admittedly, the Gru figure looks rather nightmare-inducing.

Warner Bros/Legendary Entertainment’s Dune: Part Two held strongly in its sophomore session at the international box office, adding $81M to handily cross the $200M overseas milestone, and reaching $367.5M globally.
We’ll dig further into Dune 2’s second frame below, including its China start. In the meantime, let’s look at what’s new this weekend.
Universal/DreamWorks Animation’s Kung Fu Panda 4 came out kicking as it begins a staggered overseas rollout. The fourquel opened to $22.2M in 41 markets which rep just 23% of the international landscape, and put the global debut at $80.5M. Spain was the only major in this first suite as the Jack Black-starrer will continue adding markets in the coming weeks to align with holiday play; it goes to China on March 22.
The offshore start, excluding previews, is bigger than Kung Fu Panda 2 and 3 in like-for-like markets at today’s rates.

A recent study on the Hollywood industry proved that the percentage of women representation in the top box office earners has been decreasing. The study claimed that female roles have decreased considerably in 2023 when compared to 2022 and it is quite a notable figure. Although there have been no major reasons stated, the industry will surely work on the deficit of female representation.
Along with the deficit of female representation in the industry, Hollywood has also suffered a major blow in its box office collection over the years. 2022 saw a total of over $10 billion in overall revenue but 2023 could only collect a bit over $8 billion, with their difference being almost $2 billion. Now it is a major blunder as it potentially points towards a lack of content from Hollywood.

Steve Carell has been a part of many iconic comedy films. However, his voice acting in the globally renowned Despicable Me franchise added new plaudits to the acclaimed star’s career. The franchise features Carell as the voice of Felonious Gru, a supervillain who undergoes reformation after adopting three orphan girls.

It’s a fairly big month on Prime Video in March, at least compared to the other streaming service offerings! There are are two major films arriving on Amazon’s streamer. The first is a remake of the Patrick Swayze action classic Road House. Stepping into the late Swayze’s shoes? A crazy-jacked Jake Gyllenhaal, who really seemed to want to go the extra mile for this project.
The other big film coming to Prime Video is Ricky Stanicky, and the plot sounds really fun! It follows three friends who have always blamed their mistakes on an imaginary guy called Ricky Stanicky. When they have to finally introduce people to Stanicky, they decide to hire a washed-up actor (John Cena) to impersonate him. Hilarity ensues, maybe? But if neither of those make your watchlist, there’s also the return of the animated hit series Invincible.

The new DC cinematic universe is entering a fresh new stage, and the latest news shows it's not afraid to do stuff that's a little weird or out of left field. According to a report by The InSneider, DC Studios is developing an untitled animated feature based on the comic series "Jurassic League," which was released in 2022 as a limited six-issue run. The movie will be about "a prehistoric version of Earth that see heroes and villains as dinosaurs." James Gunn, co-ceo of DC Studios and director of "The Suicide Squad," is set to produce, with Brian Lynch writing the script.
If Brian Lynch sounds like a familiar name, you might recognize it from the credits for "Puss in Boots," the "Secret Life of Pets" movies, and both "Minions" and "Minions: The Rise of Gru." All signs seem to confirm that this new dinosaur superhero film will be for children first and foremost,...

During its first quarter earnings call earlier this month, Disney announced that the next animated film it will bring to theaters on Thanksgiving will be the sequel to its 2016 hit “Moana,” signaling a renewed push on sequels after years of original animated titles.
But “Moana 2” was originally announced in 2020, under short-lived CEO Bob Chapek, as a streaming series exclusive to Disney+. This change underscores a shifting strategy by Disney and other studios to move films previously planned for streaming to the big screen — in part to calm jittery investors nervous about the thin pipeline of tentpole movies after the Hollywood strikes.
The “Moana 2” re-direct follows Paramount’s “Mean Girls” and “Smile,” and Warner Bros./New Line’s “Evil Dead Rise,” all theatrical releases that were originally intended to be streaming-only.

Updated: Paramount’s Bob Marley: One Love brought folks together around the world in its opening frame, singing up a sweet estimated $80M global bow. After coming on strong in early overseas play this week, and as audiences turned a deaf ear to critics, the international box office portion of that is $29M, landing well ahead of expectations.
The Reinaldo Marcus Green-directed biopic is out in 47 overseas markets and on a like-for-like basis including previews is 14% above Elvis and 12% above Rocketman for the same grouping, making it the second biggest music biopic opening behind only Bohemian Rhapsody.
Starring Kingsley Ben-Adir, currently attending the BAFTA Film Awards here in London, Bob Marley: One Love opened at No. 1 in 13 markets and set new opening-day records for a music biopic in the UK and France among others.
In Jamaica, it now holds the record for the biggest film opening of all time.

Will Ferrell and Steve Carell make unlikely, AI-assisted cameos in the Jon Hamm-narrated Super Bowl Lviii trailer for Despicable Me 4.
Universal Pictures released the trailer Sunday, and it is set to run on CBS prior to Reba McEntire performing the National Anthem for the NFL’s big game taking place in Las Vegas. Filmmaker Chris Renaud’s animated movie hits theaters July 3, and focuses on the problems that ensue after Gru (Carell) and his family welcome Gru Jr. to their brood.

The runaway success of Suits on Netflix in 2023 gave the show the biggest year ever in the short history of streaming viewing measurement. It also headlined a banner year for library series (aka shows that ended their run years ago) across a number of platforms: The top 10 overall titles in Nielsen’s year-end rankings are all acquired shows, the first time that’s happened in the four years streaming rankings have been publicly available.
Viewers spent a lot more time on streaming platforms last year than the year before — streaming use rose by 21 percent, according to Nielsen — and licensed shows are responsible for a lot of that increased time. The top 10 original streaming series last year combined drove 133.6 billion minutes of viewing, accounting for about two-thirds of 2022’s top 10 original shows (198.3 billion minutes). Gru, and the popular yellow minions, are back in Despicable Me 4, and here’s the trailer for the film.
The Minions might just be the most iconic animated creations of recent years. Since the release of Despicable Me in 2010, the excitable, anarchic creatures have embedded themselves in popular culture. So far, there have been three films in the main series, and two phenomenally successful solo outings – 2015’s Minions and 2022’s Minions: The Rise Of Gru. The former is in the top ten highest grossing animated films of all time.
That brings us to the fourth installment of the Despicable Me franchise, that’s arriving this summer. The synopsis reads as follows:
Following the 2022 summer blockbuster phenomenon of Illumination’s Minions: The Rise of Gru, which earned almost $1B worldwide, the biggest global animated franchise in history now begins a new chapter as Gru (Steve Carrell) and Lucy (Kristen Wiig) and their girls —Margo,...

It's been 14 years since Illumination entered the movie scene with "Despicable Me," and in that time, the film series has become the highest-grossing animated franchise ever. It has done so on the back of catchy tunes, memorable characters, a fun story of a villain accidentally (and reluctantly) finding redemption, and also the cultural phenomenon that is the Minions.
After the second movie in the franchise, we've also seen a new spin-off movie in between each new "Despicable Me" film that's centered on the Minions and their adventures before they met their best friend and overlord Gru. Now, after a seven-year absence, Gru is finally back -- and this time, he encounters an even greater challenge than when he tried to steal the moon. Now, he's a father.
That's right, following the monumental success of "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," Illumination is taking the "Shrek" route with Gru and the Minions by giving Gru a family.

In a report analyzing TV viewership in the U.S. throughout 2023, Nielsen found that “Suits” beat a record previously held by “The Office” for number of minutes watched in a single year.
The legal drama racked up 57.7 billion total minutes watched in 2023, putting it just ahead of the 57.1 billion minutes of viewership accumulated by “The Office” in 2020. When comparing total time watched, though, projects with more episodes and/or longer episodes stand at an obvious advantage. The entirety of “Suits” runs for about 83 hours, which would mean it had an easier time reaching that 57 billion-minute mark than “The Office” did with about 73 hours of content.
Still, both the old record and the new one speak to Netflix’s ubiquity in the streaming landscape. “The Office” aired its final episode on NBC in 2013 but continued to reach a huge audience until it was removed from Netflix at the start of 2021 and...

$940 million. That’s how much money the last Despicable Me film, Minions: The Rise of Gru, made at the worldwide box office. People love this series, so it’s no wonder that Universal and Illumination have made sure not to let their cash cow lay dormant for too long. Spanning two franchises, the characters are back for Despicable Me 4, which has just gotten a new trailer.
In it, Steve Carell’s Gru is now a family man and the former super-villain is now an agent in the Anti-Villain League while raising his growing brood (with some help from his Minions). The trailer is about what you’d expect from the series, with perhaps the most cliche needle drop of all time, Guns n’ Roses’ “Sweet Child of Mine”, used in the intro. Once again, Carell is joined by Kristen Wiig, who voices Gru’s wife, Lucy, and this time,...

Super Mario Bros emerged as one of the highest-earning movies of 2023 so far, creating several other box office records. The animated movie is based on the iconic Nintendo Mario video game. It had actors like Chris Pratt, Jack Black, Anya Taylor-Joy, and others in the voice cast, and they all did a splendid job, especially Jack has been receiving a lot of praise for his voice acting and his song ‘Peaches.’
Jack reportedly wrote the lyrics of the song himself. The song is about his love for Princess Peach, and the versatile actor sang it himself. In a recent interview, Black shared his thoughts on the sequel of the video game-inspired film. The film is directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic and was made on an estimated budget of $100 million.

It may not have been something onlookers (myself included) expected when glancing over the release calendar for 2023, but "Five Nights at Freddy's" is now one of the biggest movies of the year. Yes, it's only been in theaters for one weekend, but what the movie managed to do on that weekend is nothing shy of remarkable. The reason for the unexpectedly huge box office returns? Generation Z.
Released by Universal Pictures and produced by the horror masters at Blumhouse, "Freddy's" opened to $80 million domestically to go along with $52 million internationally. That $132 million total shattered even the most optimistic projections put forth by industry experts pre-release. It's now the biggest opening ever for Halloween weekend; by far the biggest opening weekend for a horror movie in 2023; tied with Marvel's "Black Widow" for the biggest ever day-and-date release ever; and the third-biggest opening weekend ever for a horror movie behind only "It" and "It Chapter Two.

NBCUniversal’s flagship streamer Peacock reached 28 million subscribers after adding 4 million during the latest quarter, and did so on a narrowed loss of $565 million.
The studio’s streaming service lost $614 million in the year-ago period. The entertainment conglomerate earlier pointed to “peak losses” at around $3 billion for Peacock this year, which on Thursday were reduced to a $2.8 billion loss outlook.
The latest Peacock earnings report, published as part of Q3 results from NBCU parent company Comcast, also showed streamer revenues coming in at $840 million, up 64 percent from a year-earlier.
Comcast Corp. president Mike Cavanagh on a morning analyst call said the media giant was sticking to its plans for Peacock to anchor its transition to the streaming space from legacy linear TV networks. “We continue to be pleased with our progress in the few short years since we’ve pivoted our streaming strategy as a result of the ownership changes at Hulu,...

The NBCUniversal parent reported revenue of $30.1 billion in the period ending September 30, up 1% from the same quarter of 2022. Earnings per share reached $1.08 on an adjusted basis, up from 96 cents a year ago.
Peacock, the flagship streaming service at NBCU, picked up 4 million paid subscribers during the quarter, reaching 28 million. Its revenue shot up 64% year-over-year to reach $830 million, as losses narrowed.
The streaming service posted an adjusted EBITDA8 loss of $565 million, an improvement over the $614 million in the prior-year period.
NBCU, like its media peers, is under pressure to deliver profits in streaming. At 28 million subscribers, Peacock trails rivals like Max and Disney+ but it shifted strategy after launching in 2020. Initially placing emphasis on its free, ad-supported tier and metrics like monthly active users, Peacock turned its focus to driving paid subscriptions.
Domestic advertising revenue dropped 8% to $1.9 billion.

Peacock lost $565 million from June to September — a financial improvement over prior quarters — while adding 4 million subscribers. The NBCUniversal streaming service ended September 2023 with 28 million subs.
The vast majority of Peacock users subscribe to its cheaper, ad-supported tier ($5.99 per month vs. $11.99 ad-free). Like so many major streamers did throughout 2023, Peacock raised rates in July. Peacock posted $830 million in revenue in the third quarter.
Previously, Peacock lost $651 million from April to June and $704 million from January to March. Parent company Comcast expects it will post $2.8 billion in streaming losses this year; some rough math means Peacock will likely lose about $880 million in the fourth quarter, when pricey sports rights and other content costs are realized.
Comcast bested the quarter’s top- and bottom-line expectations. Wall Street forecast Comcast’s Q3 earnings at 95 cents per share on $29.71 billion in revenue, according to a consensus compiled on Yahoo Finance. Comcast posted adjusted earnings...

While it doesn’t get too much attention today, John Lennon‘s “Instant Karma!” has some of the most interesting lyrics of the “Imagine” singer‘s career. John explained his feelings about karma as a concept. He also related “Instant Karma!” to a rough patch in his marriage to Yoko Ono. “Instant Karma!” became a big hit in the United States and the United Kingdom, and it appeared on an album with a bizarre name.
John Lennon’s ‘Instant Karma!’ was taking a ‘cosmic’ concept and bringing it down to earth
The book All We Are Saying: The Last Major Interview with John Lennon and Yoko Ono features an interview from 1980. In it, John discussed his feelings on a certain metaphysical concept. “It’s like what they say about karma,” he said. “If you don’t get it right in this lifetime, you have to come back and go through it again.

During its CinemaCon presentation this past spring, Paramount Pictures made animation the center of its showcase, showing off a slate of seven franchise films over the next two years that kicks off today with “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem.”
Leading this colorful charge is Ramsey Naito, a veteran animation exec with past stints at Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network and Blue Sky and who, under Paramount CEO Brian Robbins, was appointed to be the president of both Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Animation.
“Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” sees Paramount join in what has become a very competitive market for theatrical animation. Disney and Pixar, once the undisputed box office kings, have hit a rough skid in the past couple of years while Universal and Sony have yielded hits like DreamWorks’ “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish,” Illumination’s “Minions: The Rise of Gru” and “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” and Sony Animation’s “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
