The 34-year-old British actor Nicholas Hoult kicked off production last week on Warner Bros. Discovery’s next big bet: “Superman” with director James Gunn and actors David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan. The star of “About a Boy,” “Mad Max: Fury Road,” and Hulu series “The Great” recently went on Michael Rosenbaum’s “Inside of You” podcast and talked a bit about preparing for the role of the evil mastermind Lex Luthor.
First, he complimented his new boss Gunn for making the audition process fun. He said he enjoyed the “Guardians of the Galaxy” auteur’s method of “try[ing] things in the moment, just shouting out from the monitors, ‘Say this line. Do this! Do that!’”
Then he added that even though Luthor is better known for his brains rather than his brawn, Hoult has been hitting the weights. “There’s that bit in ‘All-Star Superman’ [the Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely...

Less than a month before opiate crisis miniseries Dopesick is scheduled to launch on Hulu, writer and Empire co-creator Danny Strong has been sued over commissions by his former management group.
Represented by Hollywood heavyweight lawyer Patricia L. Glaser, The Gotham Group is seeking a court declaration that their almost 20-year oral agreement with Strong is “enforceable.” They want to continue to receive their 10% commissions on projects that occurred when the two parties were working together.
CAA-represented Strong cut ties with Gotham Group on September 13.
“Not long after the termination, it became apparent to Gotham Group that Danny was only terminating them with the hope of avoiding paying Gotham Group commissions associated with his shiny new deal extension,” said the filing submitted to Los Angeles Superior Court late last week. “This suspicion was confirmed when Danny’s entertainment lawyer, on behalf of Danny, stated that Gotham Group was no longer...

It’s summer, everyone! And with its relatively sparse list of new releases for July 2021, Hulu seems to be subtlety imploring its subscribers to go outside.
Don’t get us wrong: Hulu’s library offerings get a big upgrade this month. July 1 sees the arrival of great films like Galaxy Quest, Fargo, and Caddyshack. Bill and Ted Face the Music premieres on July 2 and its followed by Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar on July 9. Not bad stuff! It’s just that, outside of the library titles, there isn’t much to go off of.
Hulu’s only major original release this month is the FX on Hulu production American Horror Stories on July 15. As its name implies, the show is a spinoff of American Horror Story and will feature self-contained horror episodes rather than a season-long arc. If you’ll allow this geriatric millennial to deploy one truly ancient meme: “Yo dawg,...

Even though it’s moving at a slower pace than many would like, the vaccine rollout is starting to gain some traction and in turn, moviegoers are going to start setting foot in theaters — safely of course. That said, the specialty box office space might be hearing some more coin drop into its piggy bank in the forthcoming months. It’s been quite a journey, but we’ll get there slowly yet surely.

Opening the Berlinale Film Festival about a year ago when the world was in a much different state, Philippe Falardeau’s My Salinger Year follows Margaret Qualley and Sigourney Weaver in the literary world of New York City in the 1990s working for the literary agency that oversees J.D. Salinger’s works. Picked up by IFC Films for a U.S. release, it’ll now arrive this March and the new trailer and poster have arrived.
Leonardo Goi said in our Berlinale review, “Based on Joanna Rakoff’s 2014 acclaimed memoir and adapted for the screen by Falardeau himself, Salinger tips its hat to a pantheon of New York-based portraits of young women struggling to find their bearings in the Big City. Netflix has released a new thrilling trailer for director Gareth Evans‘ new film Apostle and it as you’ll see it ramps up the horrific intensity! The trailer comes along with crazy new footage mixed in with the reviews that critics have been giving it. I’m always up for a bone-chilling horror thriller, and this one looks like it’s going to deliver!
Evans is the same director who brought us The Raid films. Apostle is definitely going to give us something very different and very crazy. The movie stars Dan Stevens and it’s been described as “a harrowing occult fable where the only thing more horrifying than madness is the sinister reality behind it.” Here’s the synopsis for the movie:
London, 1905. Prodigal son Thomas Richardson (Dan Stevens) has returned home, only to learn that his sister is being held for ransom by a religious cult. Determined...

Evans is the director of The Raid films, and he’s brought us a very different kind of film with Apostle. This movie tells a disturbing story that is filled with the kind of stuff that nightmares are made of! This is my kind movie! It looks like it’s going to be an insane ride!
Determined to get her back at any cost,...

The director of The Raid films, Gareth Evans has a new film starring Dan Stevens coming to Netflix called Apostle and it sounds like it’s going to be quite an insane movie. The movie has been described as “a harrowing occult fable where the only thing more horrifying than madness is the sinister reality behind it.”
Now today, we have our first footage from the film in a very brief teaser that was shared by Evans. It may only feature a few snippets of footage but that footage is pretty unsettling.
The director also announced that we’ll be getting a full trailer for the film to enjoy on September 17th. Just in case you need a reminder of what this movie is about, here’s the synopsis:

Netflix has been releasing a bunch of original romantic comedies, including Set It Up and To All the Boys I've Loved Before. The latest project to join its lineup is Sierra Burgess Is a Loser. Sure, we all know Shannon Purser, the actress behind the titular character who also happens to be Stranger Things's beloved Barb. Love or hate the movie, Purser's Sierra is undoubtedly anchored by her co-lead in the film. And nope, we're not talking about dreamy Noah Centineo's Jamey. We mean Veronica, the outspoken cheerleader who befriends Sierra. In exchange for tutoring lessons, Veronica pretends to date Jamey for Sierra, who's really the one texting and calling him.
Veronica is played by Kristine Froseth, a 22-year-old Norwegian actress who's new to both the small and big screens. At age 16, Froseth went to a modeling casting call at a mall in Norway. After appearing in European fashion magazines,...

Exclusive: Actor-writer Eric Bogosian is finalizing a deal to join Adam Sandler in the Safdie brothers’ Good Time follow-up Uncut Gems for A24. The Law & Order alum will have a key role opposite Sandler, I understand.
Pic’s script comes from the Safdies — Josh and Ben — and Ronald Bronstein. Producers are Scott Rudin and Eli Bush through Scott Rudin Produtions and Elara Pictures’ Sebastian Bear-McClard and Oscar Boyson. Rudin and Bush team frequently with A24 — most recently on Lady Bird — and the Safdies recently worked with the distributor on Robert Pattinson-starrer Good Time. Martin Scorsese & Emma Tillinger Koskoff are executive producers.
I gather the movie will be set in the diamond district of New York and Sandler will play a jewelry store owner and dealer to the rich and famous whose life becomes complicated when some of his merchandise is stolen.

Hulu has rounded out the cast for its drama pilot Less Than Zero, an adaptation based on Bret Easton Ellis’ novel, from Ellis, Greenleaf creator Craig Wright and Fox 21 Television Studios. Joining lead Austin Abrams are Lily Donoghue (The Goldbergs), Cooper Koch (Fracture), Keenan Jolliff (Rebel in the Rye), Ronen Rubinstein (Dead of Summer) and James Bloor (Dunkirk).
Adapted by Wright and directed by Brett Morgan, Less Than Zero follows Clay (Abrams), a college freshman returning home for Christmas to spend time with his ex-girlfriend and his friend who struggles with addiction. Less Than Zero presents a look at the culture of wealthy, decadent youth in Los Angeles.
Donoghue will play Blair, Clay’s sexy, smart former girlfriend who hopes to rekindle their relationship. Koch is Julian, Clay’s childhood best friend who has forgone college to live as a free spirit — but that freedom is coming at a hard price.

The 2017 Sundance Film Festival provided one of the strongest markets on record. The box-office results, however, tell another story. While big buy “The Big Sick” was a big hit, second only to “Lady Bird” in the specialty marketplace, many smaller Sundance films remained just that: small, often earning less than their acquisition costs.
For some movies, small is a victory. Kogonada’s “Columbus,” which screened in the 2017 Next section, received the Sundance Institute’s Creative Distribution Fellowship grant to fund its inaugural self-distribution partnership. “Columbus” grossed more than $1 million — more than Fox Searchlight’s “Patti Cake$” ($9.5 million buy, less than $1 million domestic), and more than one might expect for a meditative romance set among the architecture of Columbus, Ind.
Three Sundance 2107 films — “Get Out” (Universal), “The Big Sick” (Amazon/Lionsgate) and “Wind River” (Weinstein) grossed over $250 million combined in domestic theaters. However, only “The Big Sick” came to Sundance without a distributor.

Biopics are a dime a dozen these days, with everyone even remotely famous throughout history getting their life immortalized onscreen. Rebel in the Rye is slightly different than your run-of-the-mill historical biopic, because it deals with a very reclusive and mysterious subject: author J.D. Salinger.
Nicholas Hoult dons some brown contacts and shows off his seemingly endless versatility as Jerry Salinger, a bold and ambitious young man whose life is forever changed by his time as a soldier and his brush with fame. Chances are you had to read Catcher in the Rye as part of your high school English curriculum, so you’ll be familiar with Salinger’s most famous work and only novel. However, there’s much more to the author’s story, and it’s beautifully brought to life by Kevin Spacey,...

Fresh off the New York Film Festival, Sean Baker’s acclaimed “The Florida Project” (A24) sprinted ahead of the over-crowded fall specialty pack, as some 35 titles launched in limited runs this weekend. Backed by some of the best reviews of the year, the Cannes pickup marks Baker’s breakout following succès d’estime “Tangerine.”
“Victoria & Abdul” (Focus) is setting the early pace for this awards season’s contenders, with Judi Dench showing yet again her strength as a draw.
Most other openings appealed to niche audiences, with several documentaries competing to get review attention that might position them for later awards consideration. While another Nyff title, Agnes Varda and J.R.’s “Faces, Places” (Cohen), nabbed the best reviews, none did more than modest business.

Got Your 6 has announced six new projects have received its 6 Certified designation, a program that recognizes film, television, theatrical, or digital content that accurately portrays veterans as leaders and civic assets.
The projects range from CBS’s new show “Seal Team,” the Tina Fey-produced “Great News” on NBC, and the biographical film “Rebel in the Rye” about WWII veteran J.D. Salinger.
The national veteran empowerment organization Got Your 6 launched the 6 Certified initiative in early 2015 as part of its mission to change the veteran “broken/hero” stereotype held by 80 percent of U.S. civilians. The program challenges entertainment industry executives and content creators to craft more thoughtful narratives around veterans and military families.

Amazon Studios, which is releasing about a film a month, led the fall season specialized release barrage with Mike White college comedy “Brad’s Status,” starring Ben Stiller. Annapurna’s second release scored $25,000 per theater in two cities for a credible start.
“Brad’s Status” was one of four Toronto International Film Festival 2017 titles released while the festival is wrapping up (compared to only one last year). The others include Darren Aronofsky’s “mother!” (Paramount), which flopped in wide release with $7.5 million and a rare F Cinemascore (they poll mass-audience theaters and the scores don’t reflect all reactions). Frederick Wiseman’s library documentary “Ex Libris” (Zipporah) got a decent result in its exclusive New York run, and Angelina Jolie’s “First They Killed My Father” debuted on Netflix along with a smattering of theatrical dates (grosses hidden per usual).

The world’s obsession with J.D. Salinger has always been there. Perhaps the fact that so little of his work was ever published is a part of it. Perhaps it’s the fact that the press and readers graced him with such high praise early on in his career (possibly prematurely). Perhaps it’s the enigmatic label that he put upon himself.
Rebel In The Rye touches on many of these issues but in a rather soft-handed, unoffensive way. Most importantly, it shows J.D. Salinger at his worst – an ego-centric and tenacious singular voice. His dedication to his voice is only matched by his determination to let it be heard. Even after his death in January 2010, we still can’t stop talking about the infamous man and what made him tick.

The directors and producers who have attributed their film’s failure in the box office to the review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes now have one fewer excuse: A recent study has revealed that there is neither a positive nor a negative correlation between Rotten Tomatoes scores and box office revenues throughout 2017.
The study, conducted by the director of the Data & Analytics Project at USC’s Entertainment Technology Center Yves Bergquist, analyzed the scores and box office returns of all 150 films released in 2017 that have earned more than $1 million so far, excluding “It.”
The study, published on Medium this past Sunday, also suggests that film critics went easier on blockbuster films in 2017 than in previous years. According to data collected, films that grossed over $300 million worldwide had a Rotten Tomatoes median score of 77.5, whereas over the previous three years, the median score was about 72.

With the Venice Film Festival now complete and the deals at Toronto just getting started, this weekend was a slow one for the indie box office. The lone standout this weekend was IFC’s J.D. Salinger biopic “Rebel in the Rye,” which made $44,280 from four screens for a PSA of $11,070. Written and directed by Danny Strong, the film stars Nicholas Hoult as J.D. Salinger, as he navigates his relationship with socialite Oona O’Neill (Zoey Deutch) while writing his most famous work, “Catcher In The Rye.” Sarah Paulson and Kevin Spacey also star. The film received a 33 percent rating on Rotten.

With a monster, $117 million opening weekend Warner Bros. and New Line's It has delivered a record-breaking opening, breathing a little life back into the slumping domestic box office. The film has claimed the largest September opening, largest fall opening, the largest opening for an R-rated horror film, not to mention the largest opening weekend for a horror film of any MPAA rating, and tops Open Road's new release Home Again in second place by nearly $110 million. Overall, the film accounted for more than 75% of the combined gross for the weekend's top twelve, and we've only just begun. With an estimated $117 million, WB and New Line's It, an adaptation of the acclaimed Stephen King novel, claimed the weekend's #1 spot with ease, besting Open Road's new release of Home Again in second place by nearly $110 million, the fifth largest gap between first and second place all-time. The Sundance premiere of “Rebel in the Rye” was disappointing to its director and co-writer Danny Strong, but, he told TheWrap’s Sharon Waxman, “it also was incredibly helpful.” “It made me see what I needed to do to the film,” Strong said in a one-on-one with Waxman at the Toronto International Film Festival (Tiff). “Rebel in the Rye” takes viewers on a journey into the life and mind of the legendary and secretive author J.D. Salinger and tells the story of the birth of “The Catcher in the Rye.” As the author who captivated a generation, Salinger soared to the heights.

Movies about writers so rarely work that it's a wonder anyone still tries to make them. Rebel in the Rye tries very hard to get inside the head of J.D. Salinger as he struggles to write The Catcher in the Rye. Solid idea; spineless execution. Danny Strong, in his feature directing debut, knows how to put a movie together. But his script is basically an overload of cliches that Salinger's writing avoided like Kryptonite. Strong, whose TV writing is exemplary (Recount, Game Change), is doing a by-the-numbers biopic drawn from...

Set amidst the colorful backdrop of mid-20th century New York City, Rebel in the Rye follows a young Salinger (Nicholas Hoult) as he struggles to find his voice, pursues a love affair with famed socialite Oona O’Neill (Zoey Deutch), and fights on the frontlines of World War II. Alongside the strange case of the great-painter biopic that isn’t visually arresting is the problem of the great-writer film that traffics in clichés. The latter is the regrettable category for “Rebel in the Rye,” screenwriter-director Danny Strong’s dutiful rundown of the rise of J. D. Salinger from precocious wiseass to storied chronicler of the odd and disaffected — before those qualities in the author, made famous with his anti-hero Holden Caulfield, spelled his retreat from the world. Taking the cinematic shovel and microscope to the mysteries of creation has already felled countless movies about authors; Strong has company. But it.

Perhaps no author fascinates the world like J.D. Salinger does. Whether it’s if there will ever be a movie version of The Catcher in the Rye or actual details of the man’s life, he captivates. A recent documentary called Salinger shed some light on him, but now a biopic is hitting theaters in Rebel in the Rye. It comes out this week and will probably struggle to stand out in the crowd. It had a fairly muted debut back in January at the Sundance Film Festival and it stands to reason that it’ll be pretty much the same thing here in general release. It’s a shame too, as Salinger deserves more. The film is a biopic about the aforementioned J.D. Salinger (Nicholas Hoult), a young man and aspiring writer who would go on to write one of the all time great novels in The Catcher in the Rye.
