In a cinematic first, both Queen Elizabeth II from “The Crown” and the real Queen Elizabeth feature in “Paddington in Peru.”
Olivia Colman’s all-singing, guitar-wielding and “The Sound of Music”-inspired nun — who runs a “home for retired bears” — is one of the noisier (and wildly entertaining) new additions to the franchise. But the late monarch’s appearance is a little more subtle — a brief glimpse of a photo showing her having afternoon tea with Paddington taken from a short video that was made as part of her 2022 Platinum Jubilee celebrations. Blink-and-you-miss-it maybe, but it’ll likely stir up a few emotions.
For many, Her Majesty pulling a marmalade sandwich out of her handbag in the Jubilee sketch was their last image of the Queen. When she passed away just a few months later, among the flowers and cards left across the U.K. in tribute were hundreds of...

“All art is propaganda, but not all propaganda is art.” The saying from 1984 and Animal Farm author George Orwell features in The Story of British Propaganda Film, a new book in the British Film Institute (BFI)’s British Screen Stories series at Bloomsbury Publishing written by Scott Anthony, the deputy head of research at the U.K. Science Museum Group, which consists of five British museums.
An archival project based on the BFI National Archive, the book shows how central propaganda is to the development of British film and how it has filtered people’s understanding of modern British history. While the term “propaganda film” was traditionally associated with war-time narratives, Anthony emphasized that it didn’t end after World War I and II.
Instead, it became “a tool for packaging our cultural heritage, promoting tourism and transforming British culture,” a synopsis highlights. His argument: propaganda does not always have to be insincere or untrue.

Justin Timberlake’s Apology to Janet Jackson (Photo Credit – Instagram)
In 2018, Justin Timberlake set the internet on fire with an Ig apology to Janet Jackson and Britney Spears, inspired by the New York Times documentary Framing Britney Spears. This docu-series spotlighted the singer’s treatment of these pop icons—especially during the 2004 Super Bowl halftime show.
Remember when he pulled away part of Jackson’s costume, exposing her breast for millions to see? The backlash fell squarely on her while Timberlake’s career soared. Fast forward, and the singer finally acknowledged his mistakes, expressing, “I’m deeply sorry for the times my actions contributed to the problem.”
The apology came after Framing Britney Spears hit streaming platforms like a freight train, re-examining the media circus surrounding Spears during her rise and subsequent fall. Remember how Timberlake made headlines with his music video that implied Spears had cheated? Yeah, that didn’t age well.

Why The Big Bang Theory’s Elevator Stayed Broken for 12 Seasons (Photo Credit – Amazon Prime Video)
If you ever tuned into The Big Bang Theory, you knew about the infamous broken elevator in Leonard, Sheldon, and Penny’s apartment building. This quirky gag became a cornerstone of the show, with fans cheering when the doors finally opened in the series finale. But this seemingly simple joke was anything but trivial. It was a clever storytelling device, shaping character dynamics and plot development throughout twelve seasons.
From the get-go, the broken elevator defined vital character traits in quick and digestible ways for audiences. Leonard’s frequent treks up the stairs highlighted his struggles, revealing his asthma and lack of athleticism. This struggle transformed him into the quintessential nerd—a perfect foil for Penny, who initially only dated jocks. Their contrasting backgrounds emphasized the uphill battle Leonard faced in winning her affection.

Premiering in 2022, this show hauled in a monstrous $1 billion budget—yes, that’s a billion with a “B.” To put it in perspective, each episode alone cost a mind-bending $58 million. Let’s repeat it: each episode. So, while big-budget films might feel fancy, The Rings of Power threw around cash like confetti.
Forget the old days when TV had to sit quietly in the shadow of blockbuster films. TV shows today have become cash-hungry behemoths thanks to streaming, and The Rings of Power is the poster child. Jared Harris is going full circle and returning to the Royal Shakespeare Company for the first time in 34 years to play Claudius, the treacherous uncle in Hamlet. It is a play much-loved by his father Richard Harris, who played Dumbledore in the Harry Potter movies and Marcus Aurelius in Ridley Scott’s original 2000 Gladiator.
Harris said that when he and his brothers, thespian Jamie and director Damien, were kids, their stage-struck parents — dad Richard and mum Elizabeth Rees-Williams — would sit around the dinner table and discuss the productions they’d seen and “Dad would actually get up from the table and act them out for us boys.”
His father “adored” Hamlet and many of Shakespeare’s other plays. “I saw his version of [Laurence] Olivier’s death scene in Coriolanus quite a few times,” he chuckles from his hotel room in Iceland, where he’s shooting...

Keira Knightley is a spy now.
The actress will lead Netflix’s “Black Doves,” created by Joe Barton, opposite Ben Whishaw. It marks the actress’ first live-action TV role since she first rose to fame in “Bend It Like Beckham” and “Pirates of the Caribbean” as a teenager. Whishaw was last seen on TV screens on the BBC/AMC 2022 hit “This Is Going to Hurt.”
“‘Black Doves’ is a very exciting spy thriller set at Christmas in London,” Knightley said at a Netflix event earlier this year. The first season will contain six episodes, and Netflix has already renewed it for a second season (so: It sure feels like a cliffhanger is coming).

Obviously, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are no strangers to controversy.
In fact, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been dealing with one mini-scandal after another for the past few years.
The setbacks started with the mixed reaction to Harry’s memoir, which was published back in January 2023.
Since then, the couple has endured an endless barrage of negative press, culminating in minor — albeit embarrassing — career difficulties such as the cancelation of Meghan’s Spotify podcast after just one season.
And bad press has led to more bad press, as the couple’s rivals in both the royal family and the British tabloid media have delighted in kicking Harry and Meghan while they’re down.
That’s how we ended up here, reliving how the press loves to obsess over the Sussexes’ Halloween festivities — and how the family’s celebration might have ruffle feathers in Buckingham Palace.

Deadpool & Wolverine Concept Art Reveals Another Scrapped Logan Variant With Ties To Captain America
The Art of Deadpool and Wolverine book is now available, and Marvel Studios concept artist Andy Park has shared his scrapped design for yet another Logan variant that didn't make the final cut of the movie.
The Merc With a Mouth encounters several alternate reality version of Wolverine in one of the film's most memorable sequences, including Age of Apocalypse Wolvie, Patch, the Cavillrine (Man of Steel star Henry Cavill), and others. Now, Park has revealed that a take on the mutant hero from Uncanny X-Men #268 was also considered.
There's a good chance long-time X-Men fans will recognize this design, as the issue is significant for featuring a flashback to Logan's first ever meeting with Captain America.
"The Art of Deadpool and Wolverine is officially out," Park captioned his post. "More Wolverine variant concept designs I did for the film. This one was from one of my favorite Uncanny X-Men...

Sony Pictures Television has expanded its UK television production by acquiring a majority stake in the new Belfast-based company Hot Sauce. Hot Sauce was founded by acclaimed writers Declan Lawn and Adam Patterson, known for their work on BBC shows like “The Salisbury Poisonings” and the police drama “Blue Lights.”
The deal gives Sony Pictures Television control over Hot Sauce and allows the company to join Sony’s other UK production studios. Financial terms of the acquisition were not released. Matthew Justice, head of UK and European television for Sony Pictures, said the deal strengthens the company’s position in British drama.
Lawn and Patterson started Hot Sauce as a creative partnership after working together at BBC. Their drama “Blue Lights” was a big success, receiving a renewal for two seasons before the second one even aired. Sony Pictures Television (Spt) is getting into business with the creators of BBC hits The Salisbury Poisonings and Blue Lights.
Spt has forayed once again into the UK drama market by giving majority backing to Belfast-based Hot Sauce, the new label run by Declan Lawn and Adam Patterson. Hot Sauce joins the likes of Left Bank and Bad Wolf in the Spt stable. The percentage stake in the fledgling outfit and deal terms are undisclosed.
Lawn and Patterson met whilst working on the BBC’s Panorama and went on to co-write hit drama The Salisbury Poisonings about the unbelievable events that took place in 2018 surrounding the novichok nerve agent and Russian spies. That catapulted them to factual drama royalty and they have since made Netflix movie Rogue Agent starring James Norton and BBC Northern Ireland police drama Blue Lights, which was recently handed a rare double recommission to take it...

Is The Crown Season 5 Hinting at Future Royal Scandals? Let’s Break It Down!(Photo Credit – YouTube)
Buckle up, folks! The drama train’s already chugging full steam ahead for Season 5 of The Crown, dropping on November 9. The chatter’s hotter than a cup of English tea, with columnists firing off their spicy hot takes, politicians making headlines, and even award-winning actors throwing shade. The real kicker? Everyone’s asking if The Crown has taken its royal dramatization a tad too far!
Since its royal debut in November 2016, The Crown has spun a fictional web around Queen Elizabeth II’s reign—officially wrapped up on September 8, 2022. It’s not the first pop-culture offering to dip its toes in royal waters. Remember A Royal Night Out, where Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret had a cheeky incognito adventure on V-e Day? Or The Queen, which tackled the whirlwind aftermath of Princess Diana’s tragic passing?...

Is the Netflix Oscar drought finally about to end?
The streamer has long been chasing the elusive Academy Award for best picture. After a series of near misses, 2024 might just be the year the streaming giant claims the coveted prize — thanks to Jacques Audiard’s critically lauded crime musical “Emilia Pérez.”
The Spanish-language drama premiered to fanfare at Cannes and has a star-studded cast, including Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez, Karla Sofía Gascón and Adriana Paz. The bold narrative, riveting performances and groundbreaking representation garnered critical acclaim, leading to a shared best actress prize for the four stars. Some pundits believe “Emilia” has the goods to go the way of Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite,” which in 2020 became the first non-English-language film to win best picture. “Emilia” is also France’s submission for international feature, which further positions it as a viable Oscar darling.

Cindy Holland is stepping down as Global CEO of Elisabeth Murdoch and Jane Featherstone‘s Sister after 15 months. She is moving to a new role as a senior advisor to Skydance and its CEO David Ellison as he is plotting the future of Paramount upon completion of the pending $8B merger.
Holland, the former Netflix TV chief, is expected to provide streaming expertise and insights to Ellison who has underscored his commitment to that part of Paramount’s business.
Holland’s departure comes as Sister’s board has decided to close the independent entertainment group’s Los Angeles film and television office at the end of 2024. A new survey from Casino.org shows that NFL fans are none too excited about the NFL’s latest gambit to rule their TV screens.
Netflix wants to make your yuletide a little merrier this year, and it likely spent much more than the traditionally accepted $50 limit to do it. The world’s largest streaming service agreed to a deal with the NFL in May to stream two live games this Christmas. Fans on social media have always had mixed feelings (at best) about streaming-exclusive NFL matchups, but a new survey from Casino.org shows that NFL audiences are particularly leery of the scheme to offer Netflix-exclusive games on Christmas.
Key Details: Fifty-nine percent of respondents said they didn’t like the idea of NFL games on Netflix. More than 75% of participants said they wouldn’t buy a Netflix subscription to watch the games. CBS is the most preferred alternative to Netflix for the games,...

We have some very good (and very early) news regarding one of Netflix‘s most beloved shows.
Ahead of the December 19 premiere of Virgin River Season 6, the show has already been renewed for a seventh season.
News of the renewal comes courtesy of Deadline, who notes that the series is now poised to become the longest-running current show, as well as the longest-running English-language drama in Netflix history.
(Netflix/Virgin River)
Both Grace and Frankie and Orange is the New Black ran for seven seasons, but the former was a comedy, and the latter was submitted as such for award consideration in its first two seasons.
With this renewal, Virgin River will outlast Netflix stalwarts such as The Crown and House of Cards.
The list of the streamer’s longest-running shows is made up mostly of 30-minute comedies like The Ranch, BoJack Horseman, and Fuller House, making Virgin River a major outlier.

It was almost midnight on Emmy Awards Sunday. The crowd at the Netflix after-party in Hollywood was thinning fast. Those who were left on that September evening were called to action by the DJ with a “last dance” alert — a Netflix tradition that brought all of the streamers’ remaining staffers to the dance floor for a few final tunes.
As Salt-n-Pepa urged them to “push it,” Bela Bajaria, 53, cut quite a figure, moving around the space in a brightly colored flowing skirt and an off-the-shoulder sheer black blouse.
Bajaria, the chief content officer for the streaming platform that has set the standard for what TV has become in the 21st century, danced in a group that included Netflix programming executives Peter Friedlander and Jinny Howe and communications chief Emily Feingold. Most top executives steer clear of the dance floor at company parties, but Bajaria was the picture of happiness as she danced with easy fluidity.

As they are preparing for a wedding, Virgin River fans will also get a honeymoon. Ahead of the December 19 release of Season 6, which culminates with the long-awaited Jack & Mel nuptials, Netflix has renewed the popular romantic drama for a seventh season. Studiocanal’s Scandi powerhouse Sam Productions, co-founded by star writers Adam Price, Søren Sveistrup and producer Meta Louise Føldager Sørensen, is gearing up for an expansive slate of event series most-likely to shake the Kingdom of Denmark and take global viewers by storm.

Is “Shōgun” about to pull a “Succession” at the 2025 Golden Globes?
Currently at Gold Derby, the FX historical epic leads three top categories in our Golden Globe predictions: Best Drama Series, Best Drama Actor for Hiroyuki Sanada, and Best Drama Actress for Anna Sawai. If it also manages to pull off a fourth victory in a supporting race, it would match “Succession’s” total of four from last year.
For its final season, HBO’s family drama won the series prize at the Golden Globes and it also took home trophies for lead actors Kieran Culkin and Sarah Snook, plus supporting player Matthew Macfadyen.
If “Shōgun” rides off with only the three top categories for series, lead actor, and lead actress, it would still be in good company indeed, as only a handful of dramas have done so. Besides “Succession” in 2023, “The Crown” most recently accomplished this feat in 2020. Before that,...

Korean dramas and Spanish telenovelas are driving huge demand in the U.S. as foreign language content becomes more popular overall.
The days of American audiences having interest solely in English-language television shows are long gone. That’s according to new data from Parrot Analytics, which has been tracking the increase in popularity for non-English content in recent years. Streamers are helping to lead the charge, and the rise of streaming has helped Korean and Spanish-language content become the two “most significant” foreign languages in the TV ecosystem of the United States.
Key Details: Demand for foreign language shows jumped to 17% of total TV demand in the third quarter of 2024. The drama genre is responsible for nearly 65% of demand for Korean TV shows domestically. Spanish soap operas are also driving outsized demand, particularly among women.

“Ena – Queen Victoria Eugenia,” the screening highlight in Mipcom’s Spain Country of Honor celebrations, begins with a bang.
Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg, Queen Victoria youngest granddaughter, marries Spain’s Alfonso Xiii at Madrid’s San Jerónimo Royal Monastery on May 31, 1906. Splendid first scenes see the couple after the wedding in their carriage, Ena smiling as crowds cry her name as the royal carriage sweeps past.
But her happiness lasted less than two miles, the distance between Los Jerónimos to Madrid’s old part Calle Mayor where an anarchist throws a bomb. The opening scenes end with Ena and Alfonso slumped unconscious in their carriage.
Created by ‘The Department of Time’s’ Javier Olivares and directed by Anaïs Pareto and Estel Díaz, “Ena” is produced by Spanish public broadcaster Rtve, and Spain’s biggest royal drama to date.
What it isn’t, however, is a “The Crown” or “Maxima” knock-off.

Even though Deadpool and Wolverine is now available on Digital platforms and arrives on DVD and Blu-ray tomorrow, Marvel Studios brought the movie back to 1,500 theaters over the weekend, a move which paid off by nabbing the mega-popular superhero team-up the No. 12 spot on list of the highest-grossing films of all time at the domestic box office.
Marvel's first ever R-rated film took in an additional $636.3 million, taking it just past Barbie's $636.238 million. Greta Gerwig’s smash-hit comedy remains queen of the global box office, however, with $1.445 billion.
On the list of highest-grossing Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, Deadpool and Wolverine comes in at 7, having recently overtaken Iron Man 3's ($1.215 billion) worldwide haul.
Marvel Studios hasn't officially announced a follow-up, but there are rumors that a direct sequel is in the early planning stages. Even if it doesn't come to pass, Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman will almost certainly return for Avengers: Secret Wars.

Deadpool and Wolverine is now available on Digital platforms and is set to hit DVD and Blu-ray on October 22, but Marvel Studios wants to make sure that everyone knows the movie is still playing in theaters with a new Halloween-themed teaser.
The promo highlights some of the R-rated threequel's "scariest" moments, with Logan (Hugh Jackman) losing it at Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) in the car, Wolverine's exhumed adamantium skeleton, Headpool (who is technically a zombie), and Cassandra Nova (Emma Corrin) doing that creepy fingers-through-the-head thing to Agent Paradox (Matthew Macfadyen).
Shawn Levy's superhero team-up is now the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time, and is actually still breaking records. After debuting on Digital on October 1, Deadpool and Wolverine became the best-selling R-rated movie of all time in its first week of availability (domestically).
The movie also passed Avengers' $622 million domestic haul to become the fifth-biggest comic book film ever in the U.

Engagement is up on Netflix year-over-year, and that could be a factor in keeping the streamer’s prices stable.
Netflix once again captured the attention of the media on Thursday. It wasn’t the premiere of a new series or an acquisition of new sports rights that prompted Hollywood news outlets to fire up their typewriters, it was another earnings report that showed Netflix had once again put the competition to shame. Netflix added another 5 million customers in the third quarter of 2024, and while many analysts expected the announcement of a price increase to accompany the report, no such news was handed down. One reason for this lack of action may be the consistently increasing levels of engagement on Netflix, which may be driven by the streamer’s efforts to crack down on password-sharing.

“I couldn’t possibly comment,” laughs Dame Pippa Harris when Deadline asks the British producer if she recognizes any colleagues among the hideous and hilarious characters in her latest series, The Franchise. Armando Iannucci’s HBO satire, going behind the scenes of a stodgy superhero franchise known as Tecto, has something for everyone who feels even slightly disenfranchised working inside the film and TV content machine.
There’s Richard E Grant’s Peter, an anti-woke thesp who is equal parts pompous and tempestuous as he embodies Tecto’s nemesis. Or what about Eric? Daniel Brühl’s deep-thinking director, who says things like, “The day hath come when the suits flutter down from the trees,” when executives visit set. Talking of whom, Pat Shannon (Darren Goldstein) is a sharply observed monster of a studio boss, who has no shame in intimidating toiling underlings at the alter of a washroom urinal.

The deal is similar to other team-ups between linear TV distributors and on-demand streaming services.
Dish Network has made a move that could prove highly attractive to prospective new subscribers. The company could sure use some; at last count it had around 6.1 million satellite customers, lagging far behind other pay-tv distributors like Comcast and Charter. The satellite giant will give new subscribers two years of free access to Netflix at no charge.
Key Details: New Dish subscribers get a free subscription to Netflix’s ad-free, Standard plan. Existing Netflix customers who sign up for Dish are also eligible for the deal. The agreement resembles partnerships made by Charter Communications with various streamers.

International broadcasters are maxing out on Máxima. The Dutch royal drama series continues its global rollout, with sales outfit Beta Film closing deals in 50 territories, including with Australia’s public broadcaster Sbs.
The drama, which premiered at TV festival Canneseries earlier this year, is a Dutch-style The Crown, a dramatization of real-life events surrounding the Dutch royal family. Adapted from Marcia Luyten’s 2022 novel Máxima Zorreguieta: Motherland, the series revolves around the romance between the Argentinean Máxima Zorreguieta and Willem-Alexander, the future King of the Netherlands. Zorreguieta, of course, will go on to marry Willem-Alexander to become Queen Máxima.
Beta has sold the first, 6-episode season of Máxima across Scandinavia, with deals with Denmark’s TV2, TV4 in Sweden, Finland’s MTV, to the Yes network for Israel, and did a multi-territory deal with the Fox Network for the central European region.

“Monster” Season 3 has added Laurie Metcalf, Tom Hollander, and Olivia Williams to its cast, Variety has learned exclusively.
The trio join previously announced cast member Charlie Hunnam, who will star as Ed Gein in the next season of the Netflix anthology series. According to sources, Metcalf will play Gein’s mother, Augusta, while Hollander will play Alfred Hitchcock and Williams will play Alma Reville, Hitchcock’s wife.
Given that Gein served as one of the inspirations for Norman Bates and Hitchcock’s film “Psycho,” it would appear Season 3 of the hit Netflix anthology will delve into how Gein’s crimes influenced the film and the novel upon which the film was based.
Gein became infamous in the 1950s when authorities discovered that he not only had killed multiple people, but had dug up graves from a cemetery near his home and fashioned all manner of household items and clothing from human remains.
