Sam Mendes is undoubtedly one of the best filmmakers of our times. Among his many hit films are American Beauty (1999), which earned him the Academy Award and Golden Globe Award for Best Director, then Road to Perdition (2002), Jarhead (2005), Revolutionary Road (2008), the James Bond films Skyfall (2012) and Spectre (2015), and the critically acclaimed war film 1917 (2019). He also made Empire of Light in 2022 but has not been active since. Yet, earlier this year, it was reported that Mendes was working on an ambitious four-film project related to arguably the best band ever – The Beatles!

Young Woman and the Sea allowed Norwegian director Joachim Rønning to return to his roots in more ways than one.
As he was helming Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017) and Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (2019) for Disney, Rønning was in development on a biopic about Olympic swimmer Gertrude “Trudy” Ederle, who became the first woman to swim across the English Channel in 1926. What would normally seem like a big left turn for a filmmaker who’d been steeped in fantasy worlds was actually a return to the genre of historical drama that first launched his Hollywood career.
In 2013, Rønning and co-director Espen Sanderg’s Norwegian film, Kon-Tiki, received an Oscar nomination for best foreign language film at the 85th Academy Awards. The picture chronicled Thor Heyerdahl’s 1947 expedition from South America to the islands of Polynesia, as both Kon-Tiki and Young Woman and the Sea are...

Maleficent Box Office Revisit (Worldwide): Recollecting Angelina Jolie Led Fantasy Film’s Massive Success ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
Angelina Jolie is one of the biggest Hollywood stars, having done various movies over the years. Maleficent was a live-action movie directed by Robert Stromberg. It was based on Sleeping Beauty’s story but retold the story of the fairy tale’s antagonist. Angelina Jolie played the titular character, while Elle Fanning starred as Aurora.

At every step in Joachim Rønning’s gripping old-school adaptation of Glenn Stout’s non-fiction book, Young Woman and the Sea, Daisy Ridley’s based-on-real-life Gertrude “Trudy” Ederle faces a whole host of obstacles, only one greater and more significant than the treacherous 21-mile-long English Channel Ederle hoped to cross almost a century ago: the invisible patriarchal structure that surrounds Trudy, threatening to suffocate her aquatic dreams. When we first meet Trudy, she’s face-to-face with the crashing waves of the English Channel, her body covered in heat-preserving grease, her eyes lingering on the far horizon. Moments later, Rønning deftly hits the rewind button, taking us back to Trudy’s preteen days. The second daughter of...

Gertrude Ederle loved the water. “To me, the sea is like a person — like a child I’ve known a long time,” she once said. “ I never feel alone when I’m out there.”
That comfort combined with a dogged sense of determination led the young German American swimmer (played here by Daisy Ridley) to defy odds and sexist naysayers. In 1926, Ederle swam the English Channel in 14 hours and 31 minutes, beating the previous world record, which was held by a man. Her accomplishment helped change perceptions about women in competitive sports. When Ederle returned to New York, the city feted her with a parade on a scale never seen before (or since). They cheered her homecoming and dubbed her the Queen of the Waves.
Like all trailblazers, Ederle’s story began with obstacles and hostility, many of which director Joachim Rønning accords appropriate levels of respect in Young Woman and the Sea.

May comes to a close with a quieter weekend full of odds and ends and nothing particularly wide in terms of studio releases. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
After a fairly disappointing Memorial Day weekend, the month ends with a number of moderately wide releases. Since most of these new films are smaller, few theater counts have been reported, making it tougher to determine how some of them might perform, though it’s likely that only one will be getting a wide enough release to potentially break into the Top 5. Otherwise, we’re looking at a repeat of the Top 4 with the slightest chance that “The Garfield Movie” might pass “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” with few of the new releases targeting family audiences.
The one movie that has the best chance at cracking the Top 5 would probably be Crunchyroll’s latest Anime feature “Haikyu!! The Dumpster Battle,...

Elle Fanning is best known for portraying Sleeping Beauty in the 2014 film Maleficent and its 2019 sequel Maleficent: Mistress of Evil. So, I am unsurprised that she chose to channel her iconic character, Aurora, on the red carpet at the 2024 Met Gala.
On Monday, May 6, Elle Fanning was among the many celebrities who attended the event, which raises funds for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and celebrates the Costume Institute’s annual exhibits.

The dress code for the night was “The Garden of Time,” inspired by the art museum’s new exhibition “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.” And I think the 26-year-old American actress captured the theme flawlessly, exuding romance and fantasy with her attire.

Looks like 2024 is the year of the “Bullet Train” actor Brad Pitt. The odds have been in his favor as he kept gaining victory upon victory over his ex-wife Angelina Jolie.
After the former couple tied the knot in 2014 and split two years later, their divorce procedure was nothing to write home about as it was such a bitter experience for both of them.
When they finally finalized their divorce in 2019, the battle for who takes full custody of their children began.
In May 2021, The “World War Z” actor won 50-50 joint legal and physical custody of his children which he shares with the “Maleficent” actress. The children have been living with Jolie in her $25 million Los Angeles mansion.
Recently, a source told “InTouch Weekly” that Shiloh, who will soon turn 18 in May, wants to relocate to her dad’s $8 million mansion in Los Feliz, California.

We are officially in a bold, new future, folks. No, I'm not talking about how it feels like we're just one misguided billionaire's whims away from actually entering the grid and ending up in some dystopian era where we're literally living through the plot of "Tron" and its follow-up, "Tron: Legacy." I'm referring to the fact that legacy sequels to legacy sequels are now in vogue and here to stay for good. But you can't argue with what the people want and what they want is as simple as it gets: more Daft Punk.
After years and years of viewers demanding a third movie in the "Tron" franchise, Disney is making that wish into a reality. Jared Leto took to Instagram on Thursday to unveil a first look at Tron: Ares, the latest installment in the Tron franchise now shooting in Vancouver.
Tron: Ares stars Leto as Ares, a computer program sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission to introduce artificial intelligence beings to humans.

Production on Tron: Ares, which is directed by Maleficent: Mistress of Evil‘s Joachim Rønning, was delayed by last year’s SAG/AFTRA strike and started in January 2024.

While the Tron film centered on a video game designer (Jeff Bridges) entering his own creation, and the follow-up focused on his son (Garrett Hedlund) following in his footsteps,...

Angelina Jolie was perfectly cast as the deliciously evil Maleficent for Disney’s live action movie back in 2014, which put the focus entirely on the iconic Disney villain and managed to find a way to make her a sympathetic character. The film was a massive box office hit in 2014, making nearly $800 million worldwide and spawning a sequel just a handful of years later.
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil continued the story of Jolie’s Maleficent in 2019, though that film ended its worldwide box office run with just under $500 million. The sequel’s production budget was nearly $200 million, so Disney no doubt expected the film to make more in theaters. Nevertheless, it looks like we’re still getting a Maleficent 3 at some point soon.
A new profile that The Wall Street Journal wrote up on Angelina Jolie this week confirms that Jolie is currently attached to star in a third movie in the Maleficent franchise.

Angelina Jolie has confirmed she has signed up for 'Maleficent 3'. The 48-year-old actress revealed a third film in the franchise - a follow up to the 2014 original and its 2019 sequel 'Maleficent: Mistress of Evil' - is in the works. In a profile with the WSJ. magazine, Angelina confirmed she is to star in the third movie in the Disney series, but didn't offer any other details about the project. It's not known whether Elle Fanning, who plays Briar Rose in the movie series, and Sam Riley, who portrays Diaval, will return for a third chapter. Lesley Manville, Imelda Staunton, and Juno Temple also appeared in the first two films. What's more, Jolie hinted she might quit acting for good, and insisted she wouldn't choose the same career if she had her time again. She told the publication: "I wouldn’t be an actress today. "When I was starting out,...

Angelina Jolie has shared that she probably wouldn’t be an actress if she was just starting in the entertainment industry in this day and age.
In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, published online Tuesday, the Maleficent star said she may have considered acting on the stage but not Hollywood.
“I wouldn’t be an actress today,” Jolie explained. “When I was starting out, it wasn’t as much of an expectation to be as public, to share so much.”
Though she doesn’t read anything about herself in the press, the actress knows she’s “just been around so long, and there’s been everything said.”
Jolie grew up around Hollywood since both her parents, Jon Voight and Marcheline Bertrand, were actors. Having appeared in projects from a young age, as well as modeling and studying Method acting, Jolie admitted that she “was never very impressed with it [Hollywood],” adding,...

Angelina Jolie told the Wall Street Journal Magazine that she probably would not become an actor if she was just starting out in the industry in 2023. She’d consider acting on the stage, perhaps, but certainly not a life and career in Hollywood.
“I wouldn’t be an actress today,” the Oscar-winner said. “When I was starting out, it wasn’t as much of an expectation to be as public, to share so much.”
Being under intense public scrutiny for well over two decades has seemingly taken its toll on Jolie, who found herself even more of a tabloid target after she divorced Brad Pitt seven years ago. The stress got so bad that she noticed in 2018, during the filming of her Disney sequel “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil,” that her voice had changed registers from when she first played the fairy tale villain.

Angelina Jolie has started choosing the roles she takes in movies based on the commitment she needs to make to a feature. The actress recently told Vogue in a new cover story that she began accepting less roles “seven years ago, only taking jobs that didn’t require long shoots.”
The reason, she explained, was that she needed to work on herself — especially amid her contentious divorce from Brad Pitt. “We had a lot of healing to do,” she said, inexplicably speaking in the plural. “We’re still finding our footing.

Angelina Jolie told Vogue magazine that she started doing less film work “seven years ago, only taking jobs that didn’t require long shoots.” Why? “We had a lot of healing to do. We’re still finding our footing,” she said. The Oscar winner did not go into specifics, but the timeline of Jolie’s film hiatus coincides with the end of her marriage to Brad Pitt. She filed for divorce seven years ago in September 2016 after an alleged physical altercation with Pitt took place on a plane.
Jolie said that she feels a “bit down these days,” before revealing: “I don’t feel like I’ve been myself for a decade, in a way. Which I don’t want to get into.”
After leading Disney’s successful tentpole “Maleficent” in 2014 and directing and co-starring opposite Pitt in the 2015 flop “By the Sea,” Jolie’s film output took a significant pause.

The cable network’s annual 31 Nights of Halloween lineup features 18 showings of Hocus Pocus, the beloved 1993 film starring Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy — and while that may seem like a lot, keep in mind that Freeform aired the Walt Disney flick a whopping 30 (!) times in 2019. Let's pour one out for all the Daft Punk enthusiasts among us. Ever since the WGA and SAG-AFTRA guilds were forced to join the picket lines as a result of the AMPTP's refusal to meet the demands of both the writers and actors, filming on both movies and television has largely ground to a halt all across the industry. /Film has been keeping a running tally of the various productions that have been affected by the strikes that none of these hardworking artists ever wanted to resort to in the first place. Now, another major film has had to delay its first day of shooting indefinitely, until both guilds finally reach a fair and equitable deal with the producers and studios.

Tuesday would have been the first day of production on the sci-fi sequel “Tron: Ares,” but the film, like so much else in Hollywood, is now on hold indefinitely, said director Joachim Rønning lamented the “extremely frustrating” situation” on Tuesday.
“Today was supposed to be our first day of principal photography on Tron: Ares. Instead, we are shut down with over a hundred and fifty people laid off. It’s indefinite, which makes it exponentially harder for everyone,” Rønning wrote on Instagram.
He continued, “The AMPTP, SAG-AFTRA and WGA need to speed up the negotiating process and not leave the table until it’s done. This is Hollywood. We close deals for breakfast. Why do we suddenly have all the time in the world when every day is so precious? These tactics are extremely frustrating. It’s time for diplomacy so we can get back to work – under conditions that are fair to everybody.

Tron: Ares director Joachim Rønning took to Instagram to give an update on the long-awaited sequel and express his frustration with the SAG-AFTRA strike, which has delayed the start of the Disney film.

The film is hoping to profit off being the only PG offering in the marketplace; however, the big question is whether “Barbie” will rob it of its family business.

Greta Gerwig’s Barbie will finish Sunday with well more than $700 million in worldwide ticket sales at the box office after serving up the biggest week in history for a Warner Bros. movie with $578.5 million. The pic is now assured of joining the billion-dollar club globally, as well as becoming the top-grossing movie ever for a solo female director, not adjusted for inflation.
To boot, Barbie and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer fueled the fifth-biggest week of all time at the domestic box office, with revenue for all films clocking in at an estimated $500 million, or thereabouts. Comscore won’t have a final figure until later on Friday.
“Like a perfect game in bowling or a no-hitter in baseball, a $500 million domestic week at the box office is an elusive commodity happening only four times prior in box office history and only once outside of mid- to late-December. And it has...

The Oscars for design — Costume Design, Production Design, and Makeup and Hairstyling — are often awarded together to reward movies that have excelled in their costume creations, set building, and distinct makeup work. “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” won all three while “Black Panther” won both Costume Design and Production Design. Those two are fantasy films, which is a leading genre in the design categories. But period pictures, historical epics, sci-fi flicks, and even distinct contemporary films have also done well in these races.
With that in mind, here’s a breakdown of the eight films we expect to be the strongest contenders across the three categories.
“Barbie”
Let’s get the obvious one out of the way. The trailers have flaunted pretty pastels and plastics in both the sets and the costumes and the full film does not disappoint. The legendary Jacqueline Durran is in...

Evan Peters, who starred as Quicksilver in Fox’s “X-Men” prequel series and earned acclaim playing Jeffrey Dahmer in Ryan Murphy’s blockbuster “Monster” Netflix miniseries, has joined the cast of Disney’s long-gestating “Tron: Ares,” an individual with knowledge told TheWrap on Wednesday.
Peters will star alongside Jared Leto in the sci-fi threequel helmed by Joachim Rønning, which will hopefully begin shooting in August in Vancouver. Emma Ludbrook, Jeffrey Springer and Leto are producing. Russell Allen is executive producing.
The Walt Disney Company has been trying to make a follow-up to “Tron: Legacy” for over a decade. The first “Tron,” which earned two Academy Award nominations — but none for its then-groundbreaking special effects — earned just $50 million worldwide on a $17 million budget. That was seen as a disappointment in 1982 but built enough of a cult audience for Disney to roll the dice in 2010 with the $170 million budgeted “Tron: Legacy.”
That film,...
