There may be no other working American actor as underrated as Sasha Lane in her generation. The 29-year-old Houston, TX native has been acting in movies and TV shows for nearly a decade now, and in that time, she's had relatively few starring roles. But her eye for projects has been consistently refined, and even her smaller performances have left an indelible mark on anyone who's been following her filmography.
It all began with the premiere of Lane's screen acting debut, "American Honey," in the main competition of the 2016 Cannes Film Festival, where she managed to steal the spotlight even next to such towering, acclaimed performances as Isabelle Huppert in "Elle," Kim Min-hee in "The Handmaiden," Sônia Braga in "Aquarius," Sandra Hüller in "Toni Erdmann," Kristen Stewart in "Personal Shopper," and Ruth Negga in "Loving." Since then, Lane has accrued just under 20 acting credits, with nearly all of those being in deeply interesting projects,...

The passage of time is somehow both fluid and jagged in Clint Bentley’s soulful film of the Denis Johnson novella, Train Dreams. It flows or ambles or bumps along, passing over moments of joy, shock, discovery, lonesomeness or devastating sadness, but just as often over seemingly mundane experiences that only later reveal their significance when we look back. The cumulative weight of all those moments that make up an ordinary life is the subject of this elegiac macro-miniaturist portrait of an itinerant worker in the early 1900s Pacific Northwest, played by Joel Edgerton in what might be the best work of his career.
Novelistic yet never page-bound, the story is shaped by superb acting and finely etched characters that seem to have been lifted from a long-ago time, with faces right out of a Walker Evans catalogue; by gifted cinematographer Adolpho Veloso’s painterly eye for compositions and calm,...

A black and cursed cloud, a vector of misfortune, follows Idaho day laborer Robert Grainier in director Clint Bentley’s elegantly crafted and ruminating Denis Johnson adaptation, “Train Dreams.” Beginning with a Pov shot of a cut tree dropping dead to the ground, the camera fixed to where the fir was felled, this 20th-century portrait of the Pacific Northwest weaves much pain and suffering in the life of Grainier, played with a hardened soul by a bearded Joel Edgerton.
Robert goes from day laborer to Spokane railroad logger, perennially tested by a nature that seems to have more control over human destiny than people themselves do. Cynthia Erivo made Oscar history on Thursday morning with her Best Actress bid for Wicked. She is now only the second Black female performer to receive multiple bids in this category, after Viola Davis.
Erivo plays Elphaba Thropp, the Wicked Witch of the West, in director Jon M. Chu‘s big-budget adaptation of the beloved Broadway stage musical. Wicked actually marks her second Best Actress mention after Harriet (2019), for which she also earned a Best Song bid for “Stand Up” (cowritten with Joshuah Brian Campbell). Wicked received 10 Oscar nominations this year, including for Erivo’s supporting co-star Ariana Grande.
Davis was the first to accomplish such a feat, thanks to her double Best Actress Oscar bids for The Help (2011) and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (2020). While she lost both of those contests, she did win the Best Supporting Actress prize for Fences (2016); she also had a prior bid in that...

In Marc Forster's 2001 drama "Monster's Ball," Halle Berry plays Leticia Musgrove, a woman at the end of her rope. Her husband has been convicted of murder and is executed by the state of Georgia early in the film. Leticia is trying to put her life back together when her son Tyrell (Coronji Calhoun) is hit by a car and dies. Leticia can only find comfort in the arms of a gruff prison warden named Hank (Billy Bob Thornton), whose own son (Heath Ledger) recently died by suicide. What Leticia doesn't know, however, is that Hank oversaw her husband's execution. It's all very complicated, but handled tactfully and with the utmost sensitivity. "Monster's Ball" is a pretty great film.
Berry won the Oscar for Best Actress for playing Leticia at the 2002 Academy Awards ceremony, beating out Judi Dench, Nicole Kidman, Sissy Spacek, and Renée Zellweger. Her victory was well-deserved.

Today is a great day for Tom Hardy fans, as one of the Warrior and Venom star’s highest rated (yet most disappointing when it comes to box office) crime dramas lands on Prime Video. Released in December last year, The Bikeriders finds Hardy starring alongside Austin Butler and Jodie Comer in this tale of a Midwestern motorcycle club who finds themselves evolving from a welcoming place for outsiders to something far more sinister.
Written and directed by Jeff Nichols, who is known for crafting powerful dramas such as Take Shelter, Mud, Midnight Special, and Loving, The Bikeriders stars a stellar ensemble cast that includes Jodie Comer (28 Years Later), Austin Butler, Tom Hardy (Mad Max: Fury Road), Michael Shannon (The Shape of Water), Mike Faist (West Side Story), Boyd Holbrook (Logan), and Norman Reedus (The Walking Dead). The Bikeriders is available to stream on Prime Video from December 10, and it’s well worth a ride.

Jeff Nichols revved back into filmmaking with the star-studded motorcycle-centric drama “The Bikeriders.”
The critically acclaimed 1960s-set film stars Austin Butler as Benny, a rising leader in biker gang the Vandals who works alongside his mentor Johnny (Tom Hardy). Yet when Benny begins courting Kathy (Jodie Comer), his allegiance to the Vandals wavers. Kathy recounts the Vandals’ evolution over the course of a decade, beginning as a local club of outsiders and later turning into a dangerous crime-driven national effort. Michael Shannon, Boyd Holbrook, and Norman Reedus also star.
The core trio that star in Nichols‘ “The Bikeriders” bring to life the photography in Danny Lyon’s iconic book. Nichols‘ original screenplay is now available to view online, as exclusive to IndieWire.

Jeff Nichols is working on a Cormac McCarthy adaptation or two – but then has a new original film he’s also lining up.
When you have two wholly original films on your resume like Mud and Take Shelter, it’s a wonder that you’d ever consider adapting the work of others, yet that’s what Jeff Nichols has been doing for the last few years.
It’s understandable of course: Nichols has been inspired by some incredible works, having produced 2016’s Loving along with The Bikeriders earlier this year. Both films were adaptations of a sort, with the former being based on Nancy Buirski’s 2011 documentary and the latter adapting Danny Lyon’s book of photographs.
Nichols has had other projects on the go in the last few years that have also been adaptation, even if they haven’t come to fruition. There was a fresh take on Alien Nation...

Jeff Nichols has big plans for his future, as he has announced that in addition to his planned Cormac McCarthy adaptations, he will be penning his first original feature since 2016’s Midnight Special.
Jeff Nichols got his start as one of the most distinct auteurs to emerge in the mid-2000s, writing and directing Shotgun Stories, Take Shelter, Mud, and the aforementioned Midnight Special. His two most recent features, Loving and this year’s The Bikeriders, both had their roots in true stories, with the latter being adapted from a photo book. On the mixture of projects, Nichols told Deadline, “I’ve been making period pieces and films inspired by other people’s work and this next film for better or worse is going to be cut from Jeff Nichols cloth.”
In addition to these, Jeff Nichols will also go back to adapting, as he will take on Cormac McCarthy’s two Passenger books,...

It’s a measure of how long Jeff Nichols has been thinking about making a movie about the 1960s heyday of Midwest motorcycle gangs that at one point his close friend and frequent star Michael Shannon said to him, “Stop talking about this movie. You’re never gonna make it.”
Shannon was wrong: Almost 20 years after he became intrigued by a book about one such gang, Nichols finally made “The Bikeriders” with Austin Butler, Tom Hardy and Jodie Comer. It was made in the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic and premiered to rave reviews at the 2023 Telluride Film Festival.
But what should have been the triumphant culmination of his two-decade quest was bittersweet at best. In the wake of the writers and actors strikes, 20th Century Studios pulled the film off its release schedule and eventually sold it to Focus Features, which finally released it to modest box-office returns in...

As much as the Oscars are one of the major accolades for the talents in the entertainment industry, they are also an incredibly rare feat for many. This is because, while the Academy has acknowledged some of the most iconic stars, it has also left behind many others, despite their deserving to win – something like what happened between Emma Stone and Amy Adams.

Back then, while Stone truly deserved to win as she was nominated for Best Actress, so did Adams, who was so critically disrespected that she wasn’t even allowed a nomination in the category. To say the least, that particular snub stung so badly that it haunts the director, Denis Villeneuve, even now.

‘General Hospital’ (Gh) spoilers reveal that Laura Wright is celebrating 19 years of playing Carly Spencer. On November 4, 2005, Laura Wright landed what is arguably the role of her career.
‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: Carly Has Come A Long Way
Carly is a formidable character whose tenure in Port Charles hasn’t been easy. Sarah Joy Brown played Carly as a troublemaker, man-eater, and one-woman wrecking ball.
When Tamara Braun took over the role, she wisely added layers of complexity and nuance to Carly, making her a more vulnerable character. The audience started to defend and be fiercely loyal to Carly.
Jennifer Bransford briefly played Carly. She was a talented actress, but she wasn’t right for the part. The audience didn’t respond favorably to her portrayal of the character.
When Wright came onto the canvas, she knew she had big shoes to fill. Wright made Carly her own, and her performance...

Linden Ashby’s character is obsessed with Sharon on The Young and the Restless. However, offscreen, the actor only has eyes for his wife and co-star Susan Walters. After nearly 39 years of marriage, he’s still as deeply in love with his wife as the day they met.
Couple’s Loving Start
While their soap characters have bad luck in the romance department, the couple’s real-life love story is the opposite. Ashby and Walters met on the set of the soap opera Loving in October 1985, and it was love at first sight. Six months after they began dating, they were married.
Three decades later, the couple is still going strong.
In a recent interview with Woman’s World, Ashby opened up about his marriage to Walters.
“There’s a funny point in your life, if you’re lucky, where you really can’t imagine life without the other person,” the actor explained.

U.S. director Jeff Nichols has been named as the 2024 patron of the Marrakech International Film Festival’s Atlas Workshops, as the talent and project incubator also unveils the projects selected for this year’s edition.
Launched in 2018, the initiative has supported a raft of emerging and more established filmmakers and their projects, hailing from Morocco, the Arab world, and Africa.
Nichols – whose filmography includes 2011 Cannes Critics’ Week winner Take Shelter, Cannes Palme d’Or contenders Mud (2012) and Loving (2016) as well as more recent credit The Bikeriders – is the second announced patron.
The role was created last year, with Martin Scorsese due to kick off the inaugural patronship, but he was forced to cancel his Marrakech trip for personal reasons at the eleventh hour.
Nichols will take part in a number of sessions with selected projects in development and post-production. This year’s cohort of filmmakers will be known as the Class of Jeff Nichols.

‘The Bikeriders’ officially pushed as an adapted screenplay at Oscars … but not at the Writers Guild

We already had “The Bikeriders” in our Oscars predictions center as an adapted screenplay, but now Focus has confirmed to Variety that that’s where it will compete for Oscars. But it won’t be considered an adapted script everywhere. At the Writers Guild Awards, the film will still be slotted as an original piece of writing.
“The Bikeriders” was inspired by the photobook of the same name by Danny Lyon, and tells the story of the Vandals Motorcycle Club, a fictional version of the Outlaws Motorcycle Club. It stars Austin Butler as a member of the motorcycle gang, with Tom Hardy as its leader. It actually premiered at the Telluride Film Festival back in 2023, but wasn’t released by Focus Features until June 2024 due to the 2023 labor strike by the SAG-AFTRA industry union of performers and artists.

“The Bikeriders” is taking a trip from original to adapted screenplay Oscar consideration.
Focus Features’ drama, directed and written by Jeff Nichols, will compete for the Academy Award in the best adapted screenplay category, Variety has learned exclusively.
The movie stars Austin Butler, Jodie Comer and Tom Hardy. It premiered at the 2023 Telluride Film Festival, garnering rave reviews despite the ongoing Writers Guild and Screen Actors Guild strikes. Initially scheduled for release by 20th Century Studios on December 1, 2023, the film’s launch was delayed. Focus Features later acquired the project and released it in June. Before this acquisition, Variety exclusively confirmed that although the film draws inspiration from Danny Lyon’s iconic photobook, it was initially positioned as an original screenplay. However, those plans have shifted.
