Ava DuVernay and Warner Bros. Television are parting ways.
Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the prolific multihyphenate has opted to end her overall deal with the studio following the conclusion of her five-year deal. The rich pact, which DuVernay signed in late 2018, officially ends May 31. Insiders say DuVernay is expected to focus more on her current film slate. It’s unclear if the writer-director-producer behind Caste and helmer of A Wrinkle in Time will set up shop with a TV deal elsewhere.
Sources say Warners and DuVernay’s decision to let the deal expire was a mutual one and was made months ago — before studios suspended overall deals with writers amid the ongoing labor strife between the Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, which represents the studios and streamers.

The filmmaker, whose other films include "I Will Follow" (2010), "Middle of Nowhere" (2012), and the Espn "Nine for IX" documentary "Venus Vs.," is currently at work developing Natalie Baszile's novel "Queen Sugar" into a scripted original series for Own, the Oprah Winfrey Network. (She also directed the pilot for the CBS drama "For Justice," starring Phylicia Rashad and set inside the FBI's Civil Rights Division.) Like other indie auteurs, including Steven Soderbergh ("The Knick") and Jill Soloway ("Transparent"), DuVernay has seized the...

Last week, news broke that the courtship that Marvel had been engaging in with filmmaker Ava DuVernay had resulted in her turning down a chance to direct one of their upcoming superhero movies, namely Black Panther. For some, it was a bummer of an announcement, as she was clearly the first choice, but for many, it was almost a positive development, showing how DuVernay is committed to developing her own material in a way that suits her and not rushing off to take a paycheck. Would her potentially compromised take on Black Panther have still been pretty good? Almost assuredly, but whatever she’s planning on her own for next time out likely will turn out better. One needs only to look at her most recent work to see that she’s got a distinct identity as a filmmaker and probably wouldn’t mesh well with Marvel. Both Middle of Nowhere...
