Warner Bros. Discovery (Wbd) has revealed a first-look deal with industry veteran Jack Nguyen, with a Korean remake of the 2015 comedy-drama “The Intern” set as the inaugural project. The agreement, made through Nguyen’s Joat Films, focuses on Asia-centric film projects, particularly local-language remakes of Wbd’s English-language titles.

Nguyen will collaborate with local partners across the Asia-Pacific region, including Korea and India. Kurt Rieder, senior VP, head of theatrical distribution, Apac, Wbd, highlighted the strong appetite for Hollywood story remakes in the region.

A former 30-year Warner Bros. executive, Nguyen previously supervised local language activities in Asia and Latin America. His career includes overseeing productions such as “Letters from Iwo Jima,” the “Rurouni Kenshin” franchise and “The Age of Shadows.”

Nguyen said: “It should come as no surprise that I have a great deal of respect and loyalty to Warner Bros. after spending the majority of my career there.

“A Place Called Silence,” a remake of a crime thriller that debuted at the Busan film festival in 2022, kicked off its commercial career in mainland China with a $50 million theatrical debut.

The new film is directed by the same filmmaker, Sam Quah, but with a different cast from his 2022 effort. It debuted on screens back in 2013 in Malayalam, kickstarting an entire movie franchise. “Drishyam,” a hit Indian thriller in which an ordinary man confounds the police in order to protect his family, is to be re-made in English. Production is by India’s Panorama Studios with U.S. companies Gulfstream Pictures and Joat Films.

The film was first made in 2013 in the Malayalam language, before being remade in Hindi with Ajay Devgn and Tabu in the lead roles in 2015. It earned itself a Hindi sequel “Drishyam 2,” in 2022, that grossed some $43 million worldwide.

Panorama, which produced the Hindi version for Viacom18 Motion Pictures, has acquired the international remake rights to “Drishyam 1 & 2” from the original producers, Aashirvad Cinemas, and is settling up multiple international versions. A Korean remake with Anthology Studios was announced in May last year, while Panorama says that a development deal for a Spanish language retread is also close to being finalized.

For actress Shriya Saran, the filming of her latest show, ‘Showtime’ became a bittersweet journey due to her personal challenges. She revealed that during the shoot of the series her daughter Radha’s hand got burned.

Talking about the shooting, Shriya, who is known for her work in ‘Drishyam’ said: “So, also while we were shooting this show, it was a very tough time for me personally because my daughter had burned her hand, and I was like a reckless case. But somehow acting and coming back to a set kind of calmed me down because otherwise I was emotionally very, very stressed.”

“And the show is also very interesting. It has a lot going on. There’s a lot of undercurrents going on. Like every scene has a backstory,” she added.

The ‘annaprashan’ is an important milestone in the Bengali Hindu culture, which is also called the ‘mukhebhat’ or ‘mamabhat’, where the child’s maternal uncle or maternal grandfather feeds them rice. The child is dressed in ethnic attire for the ceremony.

“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” reaped six Visual Effects Society Awards nominations on January 16. No surprise that this blockbuster is the frontrunner for Best Visual Effects at the Oscars. Among its Ves bids is one for visual effects in a photoreal feature, which is the society’s equivalent of Best Picture.

Also in competition for this top Ves award are two of its likeliest rivals for that Oscar: “The Creator” (7 nominations total) and “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” (3 nominations total). Also in the running in the top Ves race are “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” (2 nominations total) and “Oppenheimer” (3 nominations total).

Nominees in 25 categories (including TV and commercials which are not included in this report) were selected by Visual Effects Society members at 39 in-person and virtual nomination events conducted worldwide over a 36-hour continuous process.

The nominations protocol included a review of each awards submission including “Befores and Afters” by a minimum of three different judging panels. Participating Ves members on the panels represented 25 countries.
