Welcome to the latest instalment of a brand-new feature here on Nerdly, where one of our comic gurus, Ian Wells, delves into comics history and dissects Comics Interview, the long-running journal of interviews and criticism from David Anthony Kraft (Dak).
Respect For Dak
In this issue Dak kicks things off talking about how much writing he is still doing in other forms. Borrowing a page from his book I want to take a more extended look at his comics career as I don’t feel I done it justice in the first issue. I mean no disrespect but I feel ‘journeyman writer’ is best to describe his career. It is an impressive catalogue of work, where he can play claim to having worked on legendary characters such as; Kamandi, Tarzan, Captain America and She Hulk. In 1984 he finished a long stint on Worlds Finest, so you can add Batman and...

Before the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the main cast of one film seldom appeared in another’s story, unless the characters were in some sort of a spin-off situation. So when fans and audiences become privy to all the potential crossovers that they could have seen over the years, it is quite a frustrating situation, given that these stories were not over-saturated with easter eggs and corporate product placement.

After the incessant success of the two movies thus far, Knives Out 3, rumored to be titled Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, has given fans another promising update earlier today. The Hollywood Reporter states that none other than Josh Brolin is set to play a role in the third iteration of the series.
Daniel Craig in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery | Netflix
Marvel’s very own Thanos, Brolin also played cable in Deadpool 2 and is amongst a range of MCU stars who have been in some way associated with the series. While the franchise is an original creation by Rian Johnson, the 50-year-old director seemingly has a soft spot for Marvel stars.
Including Brolin, a total of 7 stars who have appeared in some way in the MCU have now featured in the Knives Out series.

There is a current ongoing lawsuit against CBS and the television show Seal Team. The lawsuit is a discrimination lawsuit alleging that the network and show are practicing discriminatory hiring practices in the writers’ room. However, the twist here is that it is a man claiming he is discriminated against because he is a “white, heterosexual male.”
Here is what you need to know about the recent lawsuit and the defense CBS is taking in the case.
Writer Sues CBS & Seal Team TV Show For Discrimination
A longtime script coordinator has sued CBS and the television series Seal Team for discrimination in its hiring practices. The man claims that he has worked for years to earn a staff writer position on the show but was passed over solely because he is a “white, heterosexual male.”

Mike Colter starred in Marvel Television's Luke Cage from 2015 to 2018 and, like the rest of those heroes, his time as the character reached an abrupt end amid a wave of cancellations. That was Netflix's way of responding to the launch of Disney+, but after a couple of years of waiting, Marvel Studios is free to do what it likes with Power Man and company.
The Defenders TV shows are supposedly considered "canon" to the wider MCU and, with Charlie Cox and Jon Bernthal reprising their roles as Daredevil and The Punisher in 2025's Born Again, could Colter eventually join them as Power Man?
The actor was always something of a divisive choice, and replacing the 47-year-old with a younger lead more in line with the comic book version of the character perhaps makes the most sense. For what it's worth, Colter remains open to playing Cage again, even...

Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny are teaming up in the streaming wars. Disney recently announced a partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery in a new streaming bundle that adds Disney+ and Hulu to the Max streaming service. This has also led to counter bundles from competitors Netflix, Comcast, and Apple. The lines are being drawn in this next phase of streaming.
However, one group is very unhappy with the recent announcement. The Parents Television and Media Council (PTC) has expressed its disdain for Disney associating itself with Max, a service that features multiple films and shows aimed at older audiences, such as Game of Thrones, with its violence and nudity.
In their eyes, they see this deal, and I am not exaggerating, as if Disney was adding pornography to the platform. While Hulu having movies like Poor Things (which is very graphic in terms of its sexual depictions on screen) was apparently okay,...

Madame Web always had a steep hill to climb after becoming meme-fodder immediately after the release of its first (and only) trailer, but right from the opening scene with Cassie's mother in the Amazon researching spiders just before she died, it was clear that Sony Pictures' latest Ssu movie was... probably not going to be a big hit.
To be fair, Madame Web did end up surpassing (just about) the $100 million mark worldwide, but with a reported budget of around $80 - $100 million, and an abysmal 11% on Rotten Tomatoes, we can't imagine seeing much more from Miss Web and her teenage Spider-Women pals anytime soon.
Some felt the movie wasn't quite as bad as it was made out to be, while others were of the opinion that it crossed into so bad it's good territory.
We didn't review Madame Web here on Cbm when it was released in theaters, but if you're interested,...

Is Jessica Jones about to make her MCU return? While nothing is confirmed, a new Instagram post from Krysten Ritter has left fans convinced we'll see her reprise the role sooner rather than later.
As you can see below, Ritter is rocking some very cool purple hair. In the comics, when Jessica first became a superhero - then known as Jewel - she did so in spandex and with, you guessed it, pink/purple hair.
While the character later grew that out after becoming a P.I., some artists have portrayed her as still having those purple locks. Like Daredevil's expanded power set and colourful costumes, though, this would be a great way to softly reboot the character for Earth-616 after the grounded and gritty Jessica Jones.
Last April, Ritter responded positively when asked if she was open to returning as Jessica. "I have no idea; I hope so!

By all measures, Ziffren Brittenham senior partner Clifford Gilbert-Lurie has had a storied run as an entertainment attorney. Over the course of his four-decade-plus career, he has made big deals for a long list of loyal clients that have generated pages upon pages of headlines in the show business trades. For those professional accomplishments, along with his philanthropic efforts, he’s being honored with Variety’s Power of Law Award at a breakfast April 18 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills.

Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio have been locked in to reprise the roles of hero Matt Murdock / Daredevil and villain Wilson Fisk / Kingpin, characters they originally played on the Marvel-inspired Netflix series Daredevil, on the Disney+ series Daredevil: Born Again ever since Marvel and Disney+ started pushing the show forward. When their supporting cast was being assembled at the end of 2022, it was announced that Sandrine Holt (American Gigolo) had signed on to appear on the show as a love interest to the Fisk – with the word being that she was taking over the role of his wife Vanessa Marianna Fisk, who had previously been played by Ayelet Zurer on the Netflix show. Apparently there had been scheduling issues with Zurer, who said she was “sad to not take part” in the new series… which, at the time, wasn’t meant to line up with the Netflix show perfectly. The most unexpected movie news of the day hit the internet today: Drew Goddard is attached to co-write and direct a fifth "The Matrix" film for Warner Bros. Discovery. It's unexpected largely because Lana Wachowski -- one of the key creative voices of this franchise, a director of the original trilogy, and the solo director of 2021's "The Matrix Resurrections" -- is stepping into an executive producer role this time around, since Goddard reportedly came to the studio with an idea for a new entry in this franchise that excited the folks in charge. On the surface, he may seem like a somewhat odd choice to usher "The Matrix" into the future, but several projects in Goddard's filmography lead us to believe he could be a great choice to take the reins.
His feature directorial debut, 2012's "The Cabin in the Woods," seems like it's going to be one thing...

Attention: The Following Report Is A Rumor. Please Take The Following Story With A Grain Of Salt.
The return of Charlie Cox as Daredevil has been met with much positivity from fans. The Marvel Netflix shows were fairly popular with five standalone shows with a crossover series The Defenders. Initially not fitting into Marvel’s plans the shows are now being integrated into MCU canon.
Following Cox’s return, there has been much speculation as to who may be next in returning to the world of Marvel. One of the most vocal of those is actor Finn Jones who portrayed Danny Rand, aka Iron Fist. He felt that he wasn’t able to give the character justice and wished for the chance to do so.

It is indisputable that the Netflix series Iron Fist, starring Finn Jones on Netflix, struggled to garner favorable reviews. Scott Buck’s series has a 20% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, with a 71% favorability rating, it somehow garnered slightly higher respect from the review aggregator’s audience.
Its cancellation in 2018 was a further letdown. Since then, fans of the character have expressed a keen interest in seeing Jones reprise his role as Danny Rand, aka Iron Fist, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Despite years after the show and its lackluster reception, there is a growing call for Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige to give Jones “another chance” to play the iconic martial arts hero on the big screen.

A recent social media post by Iron Fist star Finn Jones fueled speculation the actor could be returning as the Marvel character.
Jones first played martial arts master Danny Rand in Netflix's Iron Fist, which ran for two seasons from 2017 to 2018. He also starred in the crossover series The Defenders and made a cameo appearance in Season 2 of Luke Cage.
Iron Fist received poor reviews upon release, and even Jones admitted it "didn't live up to expectations." However, with the Defenders Saga now officially under the Disney+ umbrella, rumors are rife that the Netflix Marvel stars could make a return in the MCU.

On the heels of What If…? season one’s warm reception, Marvel Studios head of streaming Brad Winderbaum knew that now was the time to pursue his longtime dream of reviving the beloved Fox Kids show X-Men: The Animated Series. The series aired from 1992 to 1997, and Winderbaum, as executive producer, is on the verge of releasing X-Men ’97, which picks up right where the original series left off as the classic X-Men characters are forced to find a way forward without the leadership of Professor Charles Xavier.
Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige required only two conditions before giving his blessing on the latest Disney+ animated series.
“Following the success of What If…?, when we were able to make more animated shows, [X-Men ’97] was my first idea out of the box. And Kevin [Feige] was like, ‘Alright, if we can get the [original] cast and we can get the song, let’s do it.

While it may still be in the late development stages at the moment, fans can not help but get excited for the return of Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock in the upcoming MCU series Daredevil: Born Again.

Actor Charlie Cox is popularly known for portraying Matt Murdock a.k.a., Daredevil in the series Daredevil for Netflix. Inspired by 1970s movies, the series was intended to be darker than other Marvel projects, intentionally avoiding any MCU crossovers. It was the first Marvel Netflix series and was followed by Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist, which eventually led to the mini-series The Defenders.
Upon its release, the series received positive comments from the critics as well as the audience, with Charlie Cox’s character becoming one of the fan favorite MCU characters. In 2022, after Disney regained the license for the Marvel series, Daredevil Netflix was canceled to make way for a Disney+ show. Cox will reprise his role for Daredevil: Born Again scheduled for a 2025 release, but recent reports suggest that he could appear in Spider-Man 4 in a significant role.

Dakota Johnson’s Madame Web sustained a lot of negative reviews and underwhelming ratings which a lot of people think the blame would immediately fall on the director. Still, many fans believe it was not Sj Clarkson’s fault that the material was not up to par or did not entirely capture the story of Cassandra Webb.

The recently released Madame Web has failed epically, both among general audiences and critics, and surprisingly enough, fans weren’t shocked by the film’s failure. The members of the audience who loved Jessica Jones during its successful run in the past might also remember the character of The Purple Man, a.k.a Kilgrave, played expertly by actor David Tennant. Marvel has officially confirmed the inclusion of the Netflix Marvel series in the Sacred Timeline of the franchise. Until now, the series Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, and Iron Fist were developed separately from the MCU canon and had only passing references to the movies. But with the shows being placed in the official timeline order on Disney Plus, they have been officially confirmed to be part of the MCU canon.
However, the fact that the Netflix Marvel shows were separate from the films had given the studio the freedom to allow some actors to crossover from the show to the films. But, with the shows being canonized, the portrayal of certain characters may be confusing. One of the biggest examples of this flaw is the casting of Mahershala Ali, who portrayed Cottonmouth in Luke Cage and will be seen as Blade in the MCU.

Dakota Johnson is a fascinatingly eccentric celebrity (and I very much mean that as a compliment), so it should come as no surprise that she's also been the most entertaining part of the marketing for "Madame Web." To some extent, the latest entry in Sony's Spider-Man Universe -- a movie that /Film's Witney Seibold describes in his review as a "clunky, earnest, and weirdly charming" oddity -- seems almost tailor-made for her. The "Fifty Shades of Grey" actor has a peculiar appeal as a public figure, from her handling of "lime-gate" to the wry, understated shade she threw at the meme birthed by the "Madame Web" trailer line, "He was in the Amazon with my mom when she was researching spiders right before she died." The line itself isn't even in the film, which only makes both the meme and Johnson's reaction to it all the more curiously amusing.

Madame Web filmmaker Sj Clarkson is both persistent and prolific. The British director has helmed at least 109 episodes of television from 2001 until now. She cut her teeth to the tune of 37 episodes on a British medical soap known as Doctors, but that experience eventually paved the way for the likes of Dexter, Orange Is the New Black and Succession. (Her first episode of Dexter ended with John Lithgow’s iconic line of, “Hello, Dexter Morgan.”)
In recent years, Clarkson’s efforts to mount projects on a massive scale have tested her patience, as her Naomi Watts-led Game of Thrones prequel pilot, Bloodmoon, didn’t go, nor did her version of Star Trek 4 in 2018. Nevertheless, Clarkson’s feature directorial debut, Madame Web, is now arriving in theaters on Feb. 14, and she never imagined that her first film would take place in a universe that’s related to Spider-Man.

Cassandra Webb (Dakota Johnson) in Columbia Pictures’ ‘Madame Web’
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is in a weird place right now. Since the end of Phase 3 and “The Infinity Saga,” the movies seem to be just throwing stuff against a wall to see what sticks. Unfortunately, Madame Web doesn’t quite stick.
Madame Web is about a New York City paramedic named Cassandra Webb (Dakota Johnson) who, after a near-death experience, discovers that she has clairvoyant powers. Meanwhile, a dark figure named Ezekiel Sims (Tahar Rahim), who also has clairvoyancy (as well as other spider-like powers), has dreams of three young women named Julia (Sydney Sweeney), Mattie (Celeste O’Connor), and Anya (Isabela Merced) who will develop similar powers to his and eventually kill him. Cassandra’s abilities allow her to detect Ezekiel’s plan and she vows to stop him. But to save their future, she must confront her own past.

You know a superhero movie is in trouble when even the “first reactions” from fan sites are scathing.

2024 is going to be light on superhero movies (relatively speaking) but comic book cinema will be present on the big screen on Valentine's Day. Sony's latest "Spider-Man" spin-off movie "Madame Web" is hitting theaters, introducing several brand new spider-heroes into the ever-growing Marvel multiverse.
Following in the footsteps of movies like "Venom" and "Morbius," as well as this year's "Kraven the Hunter," Sony is once again making the most of the Marvel Comics characters it has the rights to in the larger "Spider-Man" franchise. Specifically, it sees Dakota Johnson bring Cassandra Web, aka Madame Webb, to life alongside an impressive supporting cast.
But is this a one-and-done? Or is the studio setting up more for the future? We're going to discuss the movie's post-credits scene situation in spoiler-free fashion. Seriously, we're not going to spoil anything. We're just here to arm you with information so you can be ready on opening weekend.

While only one film, “Deadpool 3,” is set for release in 2024, widely regarded as the “MCU Savior,” questions linger as to whether this reflects a genuine commitment to quality or if other projects are simply facing delays due to extensive rewrites, reshoots, and challenges arising from the SAG-AFTRA strike. Among the projects anticipated for 2024 is “X-Men ’97,” an animated series serving as a revival of the beloved ‘X-Men: The Animated Series,’ promising a direct continuation of its nostalgic predecessor.
Furthermore, the recent debut of “Echo” seemingly solidified Netflix’s “The Defenders Saga” as part of the official MCU canon, positioning it on the established MCU timeline.

Despite having obvious problems with the quality of the projects, and the fact that Bob Iger came out with a statement a few months ago about how they should focus on “quality over quantity,” Marvel Studios and the MCU are going full steam ahead developing numerous projects to be released in the next few years.
Yes, only one movie will be released in 2024 and it’s Deadpool 3′ which is widely known as “MCU Savior” but it’s still questionable whether that is truly due to the studio focusing on quality or whether the other projects simply aren’t ready due to various rewrites, extensive reshoots and other problems caused by SAG-AFTRA strike. One project that we can also expect to be released relatively soon in 2024 is ‘X-Men ’97,’ an animated show and a revival of the old ‘X-Men: The Animated Series.’ The show is supposed to be a direct continuation...
